Thanks for the link to the music, I really liked her voice so I went and checked out both versions of the song that I was unawares. BYW, “The Octagon” (1980) brought me here. When I realized the “enforcers” sword removal and reversal with Sai was bullshit with three cuts in the shot in a split second I came here to check to see if his group was even correct, because I know the guys a martial artist/actor, but... you know. Yours is the second video I seen, I hated the first one UA-cam showed me, “martial “pride” or some shit... yeah... the guy has so much “pride” he’s sniffing in his video like I sick dog! HA!!!
the first grip is very good. the other two you should almost never use. If you are having trouble maintaining saber grip change into a hammer grip and those are the only two grips you should be using 99% of the time. if you use the other grips if an opponent has a sharp weapon you not only might cut. but you are turning your best advantage which is protection of the prongs to a disadvantage. as far as tricks I can understand why someone would at certain times wish to put sai in an icepeak grip but I'm having hard time understanding why would I ever wanted to position sai with prongs directed at myself. only reason would be to hit with the pommel but even if sai isn't sharp in a way a dagger is it still has a point at the end even if the point isn't sharp it still is pointy. and doing this puts you in danger of the point being pushed into you. also you would be much quicker if you simply hit with the point or the rest of the central prong rather then spin the sai and then deliver a hit with the pommel. If you were to hit with a pommel you would hit it the way you would hit with a hammer. or you would turn it but when the point is not pointed right at your chest but rather is on your outside where if pushed the point will not hit you. the best time to do it is if you are in relatively close range and you just trapped the opponent's weapon and turned it downward and then hit with the pommel. that is only if you have just one sai. if you would have two you wouldn't be putting your opponent's edged weapon or a stick or whatever they had downward although if you do its not the end of the world, but you be better of twisting the sai as it is pointing upwards so you can fully trap the opponent's weapon and hold it long enough for you to use the second sai.
@@frontenac5083 no but the fact that you don't put your hand inside the prong is pretty obvious considering that in many cases you would be facing a sword. also I don't know that much about using kama either (I just watched one dvd) but some of videos on youtube show you things with it like putting it behind your back and feeding it to the other hand or turning your back toward the opponent and than turning to hit hit him. this looks flashy in competition with kama but it would get you killed in real fight because you are giving opponent your back and you don't have to be rocket scientist to figure it out.
Not and expert but feels like all the grips you shown (except for the 1st one) doesn't fit the purpose of the sai which is to disarm or deflect. The prongs are meant to catch and trap the weapon in between but having your fingers wrap around those prongs, exposes you fingers to the strikes. I think the most practical grip is to just hold it by the handle like gripping a sword or a stick.
Very good video, I hae been doing this for 50 years and it is good for people like you to keep the knowledge going
Well done my friend!

Just got a pair can’t wait to use them again. Thanks 🙏🏽 for this video.

Do you have any formal training in traditional Okinawan kobudo?
Obviously not!
You know the third grip is the iconic Raphael grip because Raphael grips the sai the exact same way as the third grip

You obviously don't know sai.
