great tutorial remember this video was made without a cost to you free of charge. Remember with weapons there is the freestyle form and self defence forms. They both compliment each other. freestyle moves are designed to confuse the enemy change direction so you can apply it to self defence not to traps weapons or strike but to confuse your opponent. so they cannot read the attack. Also they are beautiful techniques of body and motion making it an art form.
Omg too cool, I never see too many cool sais tricks on you tube, and I'm a huge weapons fan so I learn a lot of things from UA-cam. I would really love some more videos posted of some inventive unique tricks to do with the sais!!!! They're one of my favorite weapons! :) thanks for the video
Hey Sam :) I'll be making some more tutorials for the Sai this Winter while traveling in Asia :) be on the look out and remember to Subscribe. Thanks!!
As a beginner, I have absolutely no idea how to mimic that unless I see it in slow motion. The video is good for impressing people but not teaching. :/
Thank you for your feedback. The intention of this video was with more intermediate Sai practitioners in mind. I would recommend for beginners to view traditional forms, drills, and katas to learn the foundation prior to tricks and flair. I will have slow motion reviews in the future as I am aware of the benefits the learner will attain by seeing this display.
That’s the thing….. He mentioned the aluminum “competition sai” (Complete trash!) But I’m not convinced that he’s using a full weight set. You…like I most likely have solid steel, If that’s the case than what he’s displaying CAN be done with what you have…. But it’s not gonna be nailed in a single night….more like weeks…… “Build up those hand muscles ! 😂” I’m willing to bet he has pot-metal with a thin chrome plate….not particularly “light weight” But still a good bit more light weight than solid steel or iron. I’m betting by now you have reverse spun your sai 100 times…. Look at the point that causes friction on your finger, if it’s not a different color than the rest of the sai you are dealing with something more heavy than what ol dude is demonstrating with in the video. If you see a copper or dark hue where your finger creates friction then you have what this did has…. Which comparatively speaking is lighter… “Just don’t drop them on on a very hard surface…..else the Tusme “prong” break smooth off” “I hope this hasn’t happened to you yet.”
lel thanks for the good question. I actually have a background in both. I wouldn't have been able to develop the dexterity and handling skills without first examining and learning the foundational methods that go along with this implement. Which is why I usually recommend the same knowledge to anyone else who has a curiosity for Sai and Nunchaku. Preserving the history is important. But luckily for me UA-cam has quite an assortment of other Sai videos that explain these very concepts from actual combat implications, kata, and drills Which then allows me to cover a more progressive and flashier side to using Sai. It's good for parties too ;)
@@GabrielFord I call bullshit on the following comment. "I wouldn't have been able to develop the dexterity and handling skills without first examining and learning the foundational methods that go along with this implement" Dont try to turn this into some east asia mystical secret. Most likely a drummer could pick up your "tricks" I can spin a full wine bottle three full rotations on the palm of my hand. Why? Because I figured out the balance point and practiced. This is beyond silly.
Hello! Thank you for the comment. That’s a good question. Yes! You most certainly can perform this trick with shorter Sai. There might be some adjustments to your grip to compensate for some of the weight difference but achievable none the less.
Started using these a few weeks ago using your video as a basis. I dunno why people can't see how you do it I can plainly see it and have done everything successfully because of it. Maybe not as fast and with as much dexterity but I'm guessing that will come with more practice
Thank you for the comment and feedback. When I make tutorials I remain aware that there are various learning styles and not everyone will benefit to how my videos are presented. So for future tutorials I will be sure to clarify and visually assist these particular barriers.
Thanks a lot for sharing this. it was very well explained and easy to follow the logic and the movement of the sai. I'm preparing a demonstration for my next grading, and this video was invaluable. thank you again :-) If there are any other tips, (or better yet, kata) that you can share, i will be your first viewer on those vids.
Tim Burns I enjoy using aluminum octagon Sai from Century martial arts supply. Although they are very lite they are also practical in the progression that I am not actually using them as potential weapons and rather object manipulation.
Hello, thank you for your question. This particular pair is available on Century Martial Arts Supply. centurymartialarts.com/collections/sai-canes-tonfa/products/round-sai
I'm trying to buy sais but I don't know how long to get them. I measured my forearm and it's about 11.5 inches and I know the Tip of the sai should be a little bit longer then my forearm for defense but I don't know how long to get the sais. help please?
Hello! I honestly prefer longer length Sai which are typically 19'' in length. It's more than enough length to cover your forearm and will also help with many of the tricks you can learn for freestyle. The added length will make them more balanced.
A few tips when doing this spin: Push with your four fingers and immediately open your hand face up. Try to keep your fingers pointed down and at an angle while your palm is as flat as can be. Hope this helps :)
***** Point the sai up a little when you are spinning and when the spin gets around halfway and hits your knuckle, then kind of move your knuckle under and point the sai up a little bit . It helped me a lot.
Your grip in most positions is wrong, this way you will loose or injure your fingers during sparing/combat. It also generates a lot less engery and force during strikes. Flashy but ineffective!
Jacques du Plessis thank you for the insightful correction. But do keep in mind that this ‘trick’ is by no means meant for any traditional application, sparring, or foundational forms, or strikes. I’ll be sure to post a disclaimer at the beginning of my next series of Sai tricks in the future for educational and development purposes. Wishing you well in all your endeavors.
Gabriel. I have just started to practise the sai here in Bali where some of the guys train in Pencak Silat are using the sai as well. They call it trisula here. I am trying to learn your tricks but I need like super slow motion hehe!
Tbh that flashy move you think isnt effective could be an eye candy that distracts you so your not looking at the other one. Remember these are usually dual wielded
Nice "trick" - the problem I see with doing it this way is that when the pointed end (kisaki) comes back to your arm, it lands on the bicep and flesh, which would easily puncture your arm if done with real force or especially with a longer sai - I'm referring to :32 to :53. Generally, returning the sai to the arm that way the kisaki should land just below the arm. But this trick definitely look cool.
@@dtester It IS a big deal. They are NOT blunt - they have a point, although most are not sharpened. We practice contact drills often with sai (vs. tonfa and bo), and although not very sharp, due to their weight and the force that is used, they easily do puncture the skin when a MISTAKE is made. Even with a non-sharpened kisaki! And we all make mistakes!
@@senseiruss I'd expect something as pokey as a screw driver (at most) but if it's actually close to sharp than I think that would not be very traditional. So to that I would say, don't "trick" with a "dangerous" Sai :) ...I do agree you do have to be careful and I do agree you can hurt yourself accidentally trying to do tricks like the video....I just don't think you would puncture your bicep with a Sai of normal bluntness doing his trick. +Nick Anna Took me a long time but I can do it fluently now. My fingers are sometimes slow though and get caught. I do a wave like motion to get my knuckle under.
@@nickanna8857 Major respect to MA and practitioners but sometimes I feel they lose perspective about weapons that people never will probably use to a real fight. I would be honestly shocked if this guys gets into Sai versus Katana fight in his lifetime.

does it help without the wrap?

Having the wraps taken off helps for finger rolls with the handle and limits overall friction.
Since im planning on getting myself a pair..will it be safe if i practice those at a park?
