There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

Dont forget the briefly-lived X-Files spinoff called The Lone Gunmen, where the pilot episode had the titular characters stopping a commercial airplane from flying into the Twin Towers. This came out IN 2001.

It doesn't surprise me that the 1994 edition of that card game would have a card alluding to an attack on the World Trade Center, considering the 1993 attack on the buildings by terrorists that we all collectively forgot about 8 years later.

You guys are amateurs - “…culminates in a 2007 film starring Jim Carrey titled 23…”.
First of all it’s actually titled - the number 23. It’s an okay Hollywood movie, a superficial treat with no real substance.
Secondly it all actually culminates in a super awesome German movie, titled 23 - Nichts ist so wie es scheint ("23 - Nothing is what it seems"), which is actually titled as just 23 for the English/international distribution. The icing on the cake is - Robert Wilson has a cameo in the movie starring as himself. The movie is full of 23’s, has Illuminatus book trilogy as a part of the main plot device AND is based on true events set in the mid to late 80’s and is also a detective/thriller story. It is sort of like a fractal of the books, the plot, the real events of the past, the real people of then present. It also has a kickass soundtrack. I highly recommend watching it.
But seriously you are all doing a great job with the podcast. I discovered lots of new interesting info. Thanks for this 🤙

Anything anyone ever created to make things better wound up being used later on by someone else to make everything worse.

I can almost sympathize with conspiracy theorists now. There must be some comfort in finding order or meaning where none actually exists.

That quote about the Egyptian god Kek and its relation to Pepe is wildly off the mark. Typical post-hoc bs. The modern "kek" is a corruption of the Korean chat term for laughter "ㅋㅋㅋ" (kekeke). Before that "lulz" was the thing to use and that's a corruption of "lol" in a similar pattern. imo it's really useful to have at least a fleeting interest in etymology when looking at conspiracy analysis, because it's scary how often people forget the simple fact that other languages exist. If you see two similar words look up their origins first because they aren't necessarily related.
As for Pepe, I think the alt-right got to hijack that because it was a relatively long lived meme that was only moderately popular at the time. Distinctive enough to become a brand but niche enough that if you start spamming to force a new association you won't be drowned out. It's all very opportunistic. I don't deny that you can draw a line from discordian tactics to the alt-right's "meme magic", but this deep intentional symbolism is a couple steps too far for me.

"kek" specifically was the Orcish translation of "lol" in World of Warcraft, didn't know about the Korean connection

@@patriciapandacoon7162 That was probably an intentional shout out to the Korean player base by Blizzard, since Starcraft is hugely popular in South Korea.

You seem a bit apologist over their good intentions, but I feel like a lot of these movements (the Situationalists most of all) were doomed to fail. In terms of advantages of progressive movements, the truth being on our side is a big one… it should have been obvious that a model of misinformation was always going to be a more useful tool to the side that seeks to obfuscate the facts.
It’s not just making a fine gun and leaving it on the table, it’s doing it when your foe is a much much better marksman than you. This is one of those “we’re compromising our integrity for a greater cause” where that going wrong should have been very obvious, in my mind.
For me it came up in academia, but I’m personally a big proponent of the suggestion you made about journalism, that because everyone has a bias and we all know that, it’s better to be open about yours rather than feign impartiality… all writing seems to influence the audience, not stating your intentions doesn’t remove them, it just makes your manipulations more insidious.
