There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

I will forever love, appreciate, and relate to Roberts repeat line for expressing his existential crisis about doing podcasting for the rest of his life "BTB will go on untill the heat death of the universe" From someone whos spent his adult life stuck in factories i want you to know, YOU ARE NOT ALONE ROBERT! I also use sarcasm to express my dread about wasting my life at a less than fulfilling job 😅 LONG LIVE CAPITALISM
learned about this guy recently and wondered if he'd get a BtB episode
excellent timing
at least in the US, close to no one talks about Alfredo Stroessner
Great episode. Would love an episode on Pinochet.
Fun fact about Jose Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia’s face: that’s not actually “his” face. Apparently he did not have any paintings, portraits, sculptures, or any artistic representations of his face made when he was alive, so after he died they used his sister (the closest living relative he had still alive) as a model to capture his likeness.
Engagement!
my favorite episode of 2023
20:33 the bones are the money, and so are the worms
Holy shit this guys just Tayyip erdogan
No sé si consideraría a stroessner un alemán, su madre era una mestiza paraguaya; por sus venas corría sangre alemana, española y guaraní.
El hecho de que si es aleman o no.
Es aleman. Nacido donde haya nacido. Mixto o no. Es aleman.
Kundt wasn't actually nobility; he was just a military officer (to be fair, high ranking German officers during that period were frequently nobility - but he wasn't). He doesn't have a "von" in his name. Heinrich Himmler and Hermann Göring were also officers despite not being nobility either.
Also, while your pronunciation is def funny, "Kundt" isn't actually pronounced that way - the U should be pronounced similar to "put" (as in "put that over there").
And that's it for the "actually hour" for today.
I appreciate your explanation and the knowledge I've gained from it. But unfortunately, there is no force on earth powerful enough to get me to change how I pronounce General Kundt's name. The joke is too good. Still. Thank you.
I guess Heinrich Himmler was granted a command at the end of the war, but I feel like calling him an officer is misleading.
