When you start out, you'll hate your voice. After mixing and mastering my own music for years, I now don't hear my voice any more. What I mean is that it sounds just as detached as hearing someone else's voice. Only when you reach this stage can you objectively judge your skill and style.
Thanks for this. I bought my music equipment about two years ago and tried to record myself and I lost faith in myself because of how I sounded. Not knowing that the average the artist has an audio engineer that equalises their voice and adds reverb to it and so many other things. I am now going back to the basics FL studio and learning first the techniques on how to record your voice and then how to mix and master it. I know I can sing and I know I have potential I’m just glad it’s not only me who has felt like their voice sounds disgusting recorded lmao. Gives me hope

I've recorded So Many Verses in My Life but never tried approaching from a producer and audio engineer standpoint and I swear I've given Up so Many times trying to Learn. This was helpful

I used to be a promoter for an artist. One day we thought it wud be funny to do a song about Atlanta Bread Company lol and my vocals was horrible. It took me 6 years to get confidents to record. This is really so good! As a voice teacher myself, I’m always making my students speak through their lyrics - getting that emotional connection with the text (and subtext) is absolutely critical! We sing to communicate first and foremost, right??? 💖🎶💖

I must say that this vid hit me with your best shot as far as being a vocalist and going through all you mention. The mind set is paramount. I did and still do perform looking for perfection as you stated although not quite like I used to as I am older now and have the attitude, "I sing for myself and hope you like it". Self confidence is the key and it can be hard to gain. A guitar player friend once told me, "Sing like you are telling a story".
Thank you Graham for sharing. It reinforces what I learned through the years of singing and eliminating fear of it.

Every vocal is a guitar solo. Every guitar solo is a vocal, and both are phrasing. I am working on finding the honesty in the phrasing, which takes...not thinking about it. You have to find yourself in the words, and alter the words to find yourself. You have to mean what you are saying, and if you can't change the words, then you have to find what they mean to you. If you don't mean it, it won't come out right. This is a great video - very inspiring and instructive.

That story about piano recitals hit home. Exactly the same experience. And I also have such a weird disconnect with recording, as soon as headphones are on I’m boring although I’m just fine singing in someone’s living room. I’ll definitely take this advice

Oh thanks for this, will definitely give it a try. No wonder why I sound better in Karaoke living room when just singing comfortably & having fun than in recording booth. There’s so much intimidation going on once I face a pop filter, distance to mic, thinking all about precision, and how to behave properly because I’m in my sacred studio setup. This was my first introduction to Chris Liepe. I was digging a trench for a long brick walkway in the dead of winter. It was fucking freezing and hard work but I was so enthralled by the audio. Blew my mind. I listened to his videos on loop for a month while moving several tons of material, soaking up all the knowledge I could and clarifying and confirming what I learned intuitively through the years.
I'm indebted to this guy. He helped me build a metaphorical foundation while I was literally digging and laying a walkway fountain one brick at a time.

Oh boy, did I ever need to watch this video! This is fantastic advice! I live my life - both musically and just in general - in a perfectionism loop. I really struggle with it, and I've allowed it to take hold so much that it's killed my creativity and workflow. I always talk a big game and have great plans - I just never get anything done because my efforts never seem good enough. I am a singer (as well as a songwriter/pianist) myself, and I've always commented that one of the things I really like about other vocalists that I consider "cream of the crop" is that it feels like they sing "to" you and not "at" you. I know enough about the concept of conversational singing to recognize when I hear and admire it in other singers, and I know it's a really great trait to have, but I've never quite absorbed that bit of advice myself or even really ever heard it explained in a video. I bookmarked this one to come back to again and again, as I think it's something that may really help me moving forward. Thank you, Graham, and thank you, Chris, for putting together such a great video!

I agree with a lot you said… I think a lot of times we forget that we can actually do anything if it’s done with enough confidence… if you make a “mistake” with enough confidence it could actually be better than the thing you initially planned to do

I'm not a vocalist but I really enjoyed this video. Some eye opening angles and approaches for learning guitar as well. Great vid.
Excellent tips. I will try that conversational approach next time in the booth. For me personally I have found the best continuity in a vocal performance is to sing the song all the way through while feeling emotionally charged to do so and ignoring any mistakes along the way. Sometimes I will do multiple takes and sometimes I only do one.

WOW! This is very powerful information! I like to sing to myself, sort of like a way to get rid of pent-up energy, but I don’t record myself (it’s more of a secret hobby). I tried the technique of just reading the words, as if I’m having a conversation with someone; I did the song “I Dreamed a Dream” (Les Miserables, Fantine). I think I felt more of Fantine’s emotional stress doing this exercise, than I have actually singing this song. This has really helped me, a lot, Thank You.
I even tried making 16 takes just to achieve perfection and it was disappointing, I learned something from this video, thank you so much for the advise.. :)
Chris is an absolute legend
Exactly what I use to face a lot before while my vocal recording sessions. It is your feelings that makes you think you sound better while casual rehearsals but sound not up to the mark while actual recording. I think yes, we need stop thinking about theories, expectations, nervousness etc. Just like we forget while bathroom-singing & need to be casual & emotionally connected while recording, that's the most important aspect. Because a little technically imperfect track with full of emotions will always sound better than a technically perfect emotionless track.
Moreover we don't have to worry these days about vocal takes because of these DAW softwares, we can always have another take of a section if it is required, something which was not common on old days. Singers had to sang in a single take.
Thanks, I was sucking the life out of a song I've been recording for months now. Finally got to the last part of laying down takes which is lead and background vocals. Started using Melodyne for Studio One and seeing how imperfect my vocals are and I kind of got in a rut trying to record the perfect vocal take. Needed to hear this.
How much do you pay for melodyne? I have antares auto tune and pay 22.99 a month don’t know which one is better. I use FL studio

Nobody has taught me the concepts that Chris just went over. The conversational approach, the way to stay away from the perfect take.
For the past two years I have been trying to figure out singing and playing, recording and production.
This information has huge impact potential on my music and performance future. I'm taking this approach on my next cover song and already started practicing while I'm driving around doing my job.
I will be checking out the course for sure, and thanks for the genuine help.
How are things going my man? We are a year later and I feel I am in the same situation right now as you were a year ago
@@robinroziers5189 well, it takes time for things to sink in for me.
Just a month ago I started vocal pitch training with an application on my phone and that helped me a lot.
Chris helped me learn to lift my soft pallet and how to breath. Then how to warm up.
The trick for me has been learning how to sit my voice in the mix and match the pitch that I hear with what is coming out of my mouth.
I have made progress but it is slow. Ear traing to recognize intervals and pitch is what has helped.me the most recently.
By the way I bought Cris's discover your voice course. I still use it and it is well worth the money.
I started setting up a busking rig and taking it out in low population public venues to get over the nerves of performing in front of people.
I'm looking for open mic nights in my area and building my song collection so that I'm ready at all times to bust out a performance.
Soon I'll start making videos on my UA-cam channel about it.

I have a question regarding vocals; I really like the sound of my voice when I record and film myself with my phone, or when friends film me when I perform live. However, recording in a studio environnement with a condenser has been a real challenge, and I can't finish my EP because of that. Do RAW vocals just sound bad? The tone that I hear in my recording is so far from my actual tone. Any tips? A good headphone mix?
