Absolutely spot on!!! First person I’ve seen to actually explain mimicking in a positive light. Been doing it since grade school with singing, sound effects, etc and I’m in my 50’s now. Mimicry was the first thing I discovered on my own when I started my singing journey. It's true that I learned to understand my voice the fastest that way. What he doesn't really say is that by copying someone who is good at singing, it teaches you control of your voice and shows you new ways to move your voice and trains your ear to actually listen.
To me, the key to find your style is mimic...I tell this to all of my singing students...in combination with speech therapy knowledge....singing teachers are like good stylists...it is just style advice, what suits your voice best ( in aa healthy way) together with the student's interest...every singer and style is like learning a new language in placement, phrasing etc

As a natural born Beyhiver. I grew up mimicking Beyoncé’s runs and harmonies and belts. So much so I’ve gotten to the point where I feel like I have use my voice almost like an instrument like she does. I really want to build on that and go to vocal class

I said, 'I'd die!'. He said, 'Well, that's not going to happen today..so here's what you're going to do. Just follow me and mimic everything I do.' I did, trusted it, and skiied like never before. Something I'm reminding myself when continuing to explore sound moving through me...and out. Always exploring! Thank you -
I can vouch for this, mimicking vocals in singing/rapping styles from Americans was how I started as a British kid. However, it can give you a distorted mindset if you're not self-aware. It took me until my late 20's to realise that my vocal range is deeper than the standard range I use it in. Despite being able to falsetto Jackson 5's "Who's Lovin' You", I found out that I'm a Baritone and not a Tenor.
Def should be a video on clarity control. The things youre doing is mimicking but when people want to do it at home home theres a ton of issues that they can run into that is not present in this video
I had a vocal coach who told me to never mimic other singers. It was strictly taboo. There was something in me that thought this was wrong but hey, they were the teacher and I was paying them good money for their expertise lol
I learned so much from mimicking. I am lucky to have power and range, but control, riffs, runs and holding a note++ I learned from copying, and it's like a fun game. I feel validated, because I never heard anybody say this before, but of course we learn lots of techniques from this. And singing with someone who's as good or better makes me better in the moment, like pure magic. It's inspirational.
When I read "Celebrity Vocal Coach" I have to admit that my first reaction is "mmmhhhhmmm". But during the video that mindset is quickly changed to: "this is useful", "he acts very down to earth" to "clearly a good coach who can sing himself and intelligently pass on his knowledge". 👍

I can mimic a lot of these noises almost perfectly. My ear just sucks, I have that middle in-between he was talking about and always mimicked, but I'm one of the slowest to progress when it comes to singing, but im still trying and Im finally understand after 5 years lol. It always interested me why I could hit the mimics but never actually elongate or translate them to singing.
I have so much from this video than all my years in a choir. This explains so much about my journey thus far in music and I’m excited to start mimicking.

Wow, this video makes so much sense to me and makes me realize why singing came naturally to me since I was young. I practiced using different voices and later being taught to recite Arabic I'm sure helped a lot too. I found that I always made the biggest breakthroughs in singing better when I tried to mimic an artist like Michael Jackson, Billie Joe Armstrong, keshi or GIVEON down to the syllables and doing that made me have those tools naturally when I'm singing other songs. I always felt like I wanted vocal lessons but I didn't know what exactly to work on. I'd just search on UA-cam for exercises and stuff and hope that it would somehow make me better. This video was very validating for me and I think it makes me want to dedicate "mimicking" into my vocal practice, always seemed like a natural and fun thing to do anyway.
i am almost 40, and have been a mimic singer for my idols and i noticed i practice more on that and i did so as a hobby, it's true that it gives you a "perk" to be able to sing somewhat close to the original, but in doing so i forgot and lost practice on my own voice and in doing so lost the thrive to continue, so don't do what i did, keep practicing your own voice because it may seem like the perk let's in some sort of "cheat mode" but also effects the basics of singing, a great example of that is beatboxing when before one delves enough in the basics which is "boots n cats" without out-warding the sounds for it to sound like a drum kit, they go straight for the base throat or any advance technic for that matter, i can sing but not as good as i need to be by now, but i don't stress it because it still remains as a hobby of mine, but if you want to be serious keep practicing your own voice 1st but have no doubt in your abilities just like @studio has mentioned, your biggest limiter is you.

Thank you for this. I am a polyglot (someone that speaks multiple languages). The mockingbird is the ultimate copycat, and part of its latin name is poliglotis. I have been able to copy and mimic sounds, including the sounds of other singers. It always felt like i was not finding "my voice." Now, i can let go of decades of feeling less of a singer.

Yes jungkook from bts is amazing at mimicking everyone and everything literally like cartoons, sounds in the environment etc etc and he is an absolutely amazing singer!! Its helped him be able to sing in english and reproduce very spot on pronunciation . He even talks about the mimicking in various interviews and lives hes done. He has refined his listening skills in a very similar style to you💜💜💜💜

For my whole life up to this point I have always had the desire to learn to sing, I was very little when I would sing at the top of my lungs, my mom told me I was about 6 or 7 years old. I sang at my wedding in 1977. I took voice lessons for a little while from 2 different teachers. But, I got discouraged. I don’t think they were really good teachers. But, I am hoping one day, I will get to learn to sing 🎶 😮 this has been a very awesome video! I thank you. 😊

It helps to have the vocal range you have. I'm not a singer, but I do sing a few songs, and mimicking is all I can do. If you can imitate Elvis, try tightening it up, raise the pitch and put it in your nose. Now Sing Every Rose Has Its Thorn.
I always wondered how Chris Martin from Coldplay with his unique voice has managed to also develop so much control and modulate so well these days, including hitting high notes consistently concert after concert. Sounding just like he is in the studio these days. Could be thanks to this vocal coach!

I’m honestly glad I wasn’t the only one thinking it… like… that’s not a selling point. If anything it shows she really isn’t into being a serious vocalist because… it’s definitely not the teacher. I’ve been singing since childhood, but if I could do the work to learn from someone as great as him?! I’d be showing up doing the work as often as he deemed necessary and then some. Got the best resource but doesn’t care about the craft smh.
Hours and hours a day, for years on end, in my bedroom with my amp and mic singing Streisand, showtimes, Karen Carpenter, Carole King etc… Made me an incredible belter for a 30 year singing career. Here I am at 62 trying to find UA-cam videos to help me locate my head voice, which I’ve never had. I wish I had spent just a little time enamored with and imitating a soprano! 🤦🏻♀️

Made me an incredible belter for a 30 year singing career. Here I am at 62 trying to find UA-cam videos to help me locate my head voice, which I’ve never had. I wish I had spent just a little time enamored with and imitating a soprano! 🤦🏻♀️
