The 385 series Ford big block is one of the very best ever built. I wanted a 429 so bad, and finally got one into my 55 Ford pickup. What a jewel of an engine it was.
Preach it! By far one of the best built engines created by Ford. Put a 6R80 behind it and send it down the highway with ease😀
You sir are right on the money. The 429/460 most certainly deserves to front a 6R80. I have a friend with both engines and your kit looks bullet proof. Guess who I am going to tell.
Thanks
I want to put this in my crown vic or my 08 Expedition
This is absolutely brilliant. If these are still around in 20 years when I retire, I'll be getting one and upgrading my old '68 t-bird. For now, the old school c6 is fine but once it's play time, turning her into a boss 429 w/ this kit will totally transform her into a absolute beast on call, and a cruiser at 75mph just dubbing along sipping fuel at the same time. All while running so much cooler with a locking converter too boot. This kit is absolutely beautiful. Most people have no idea what an upgrade this is to any old school engine. A tire roasting beast with that granny first! Then a fuel sipper with double over and a locking converter. My god, ford big block with a 6R80 would be far beyond having your cake and eating it too. It would be like having your cake and pie and eating them too. Simply amazing.
Great job! It fits like a glove🏆
That is the nicest adapter I've ever seen. Good Job
This is a thing of beauty!!!!
This is a really slick adapter plate/setup. Very nicely done!
Thank you! We appreciate it :)
Nicely done! I can see this in a street/strip Fox Mustang. Lots of gear ratios and decent torque capacity: the best of both worlds.
Absolutely!!!
Very cool setup. Great video too!!
Thank you!
I have a 79 ford bronco with a 351m good running motor that I drive on highway regularly excited to see this
The 351m-400 has a shallower crankshaft protrusion at back of the engine. This kit might not fit without a deeper torque converter spacer. Give them a call and verify that it will work.
Mark,
We do make a kit for that engine which will allow you to bolt up a 6R80.

I've been bouncing around the idea of doing a 460 swap in my 09 one day. You have no idea how long I've been looking for this.
That's great you found us! 429/460's make a lot juice when you build up just a little bit.
I am just starting a project of a 99 F150. Everyone is doing LS or Coyote swaps. My old school natures kicked in and brought me to the 460. Glad I found this too
@@jdruin1 We are too =)
Thank you...this would be perfect for my 429 school bus
I have been looking at different transmissions I can mate to the 460. I was pretty set on trying to get a GM turbo 400. But that's a lot of $ to be able to get one that can handle the torque I'm putting down. I'm super happy this video was recommended to me. 6r80s are supposedly quite stout stock and cheap. Then I can keep everything Ford. I believe that within the next couple of weeks you will have another sale here.
That's fantastic! We also sell the shift controllers for the 6R80 as well. We'd love to help you with this when you're ready!
This is just what I was looking for. I have been wanting to put a 460 in my 06 Crown Vic but want legs as well. Thought about a Gear Vendors under/overdrive unit on the end of a C6, this would make things much easier
We would fully agree. The Gear Vendor is a good option but we feel in the long run this is a much better option. Especially knowing that a 10R80 will be an option eventually. A 460 mated to a 6 or 10 speed will mean power and better MPG!
U
That is the solid answer to all these older motorhome resto's with 460's, that will provide better hi-way travel speeds.....
omg yes. With double od basically and don't forget the granny low for making taking off SUPER nicer in something that heavy, then the locking converter too of course. What the old C6 never had. MASSIVE upgrade to anything but a motorhome especially.
That's awesome!!
Can't wait for the zf6 version!
We have a plate where we could make that a reality for you. Give us a call and we'll get you hooked up.
Speed Gems hell yeah, music to my ears let me rat hole some more cash and y'all will be my first call for sure!
This is awesome! As a owner of a 93 f250, with the 460, i have been wanting to find a way to mate a better trans to it. I will be contacting you guy's for sure. Cant wait till you guys do one for the 10r80. I want a 10 speed for my 460.
Thanks! We are waiting for the stand alone controller for the 10R80 to be released to offer it on our site, hopefully it'll be released soon! :)
Very nice! Fit and finish is beautiful. I have a couple of questions, what transmission controls would be used, I would be thinking about one in an MAF/SEFI swapped 460 in a 1986 F350. The other question, have you tried the late PMGR starter for fit? It is fairly compact with the solenoid on the top and I think hugs the block closer than the Powermaster. The truck frame comes very close to the starter and actually has a slight rolled up area by the starter to clear the old moveable pole piece starter. Driveshaft to transmission, mine is a two piece and the front is essentially fixed in position, the rear section has a slip section just behind the center universal. What would be needed at the transmission end?
You EFI swapped a bullnose? Sweet.
sweet looking good
Awesome kit I'm just waiting on the kit for the sbf...Lol
Cool adapter setup
Thank you! Check out some builders on youtube that use our kits if you really want to be impressed with their ingenuity.
So a custom drive shaft is on order? Beautiful work by the way.
Have you guys ever made an adapter for small block Fords to hook up to the Ecoboost Bell housing 6R/10R transmissions? I know you guys made one for the modular transmissions but IMO that adapter is way too thick and the Ecoboost Bell housing is closest to the older SBF/BBF starter locations. If you don't have one made for the Ecoboost 6R/10R, when will you begin producing them?
Very nice, Very impressed
Thank you! :)
Love it!! (course I love anything 460, lol!!)
Nice design. If i wasn't set on swapping mine to a standard. I.would be very interested.
Would you guys be able to make the 460 work with the modular ZF6 transmission? I seen in an earlier comment on this video saying you may be able to make that work. If so I would be very interested.
I'd love to drop that 460 with that 6R80 trans in a late 1970's Ford F-150 and / or a mid-late 1970's Ford LTD Country Squire. I may get some flack for saying this but I would also install Holley's Sniper EFI on it as well. For the Country Squire, I'd pair that with a 3.25 posi and for the truck I'd go with 3.73 gearing.
Sounds like this would rip pretty hard! We're here with an adapter when you're ready.
Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 is much better than Holley Sniper.
You can tell just by looking at it that it’s well engineered. How much does the torque converter adapter weigh?
About 2 pounds.
@Speed Gems im looking to put a 10 speed in my f350, 460 efi...what kit or suggestion do you have? This will be for towing.
Thanks
Will thus work with the 6R140 from a 6.7l power stroke ? Is there a stand alone wiring harness for the 6R140 ?
Custom driveline wud b needed too huh.. like 3" shorter then stock?
NEATO. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.
Hey Elvis!! Cheers from the only Waunakee in the world!! :)
I have this transmission in my truck from the factory and it is a pain to check/add fluid due to the dipstick design requiring you to crawl under the vehicle which is fine if you have access to a lift but not so much on your back when using a jack and jackstands, was wondering if you or someone else has a kit to make it possible to access it from under the hood just like they used to do back in the good old days. I think B&M has something like that but adding fluid is a slow process from what I remember reading about it.
@ Running on Empty - Nothing here...check with Bowler Performance Transmission.
The ecoboost starter is in the same general location as the SBF and 460 blocks.
Thats awesome...
Thank You !
You're welcome?
and here i am thinking about putting a 302 in my truck when i find this and a 460, now to find out if i can put a np205 behind a 6r80 trans
Sounds good how about price wise
I have a built 1971 460 to a 514 do you make a adapter plater to bolt up a 13 speed rig transmission to it? I know it sounds crazy. Or do you know who makes one.
@ John House - Application dependent, but yes should be considered with a project like this.
Where are yall at now with the small block adaptor? I wouldnt mind putting one of them transmission behind my 300 after i have hot rodded it
@Chapa's Chop Shop - It is complete and in production!...Please see the link below - for information and purchasing:

Thank you for choosing Speed Gems Transmission Adapters!
I have a 1971 F250 Im swapping a 557 into. Will this work with that combo? If not im going to a c6 that can handle 1200
I had to read the comments to figure out why I would want this transmission. Making it so people with a 460/4wd can swap out their c-6 would be a good idea. Does this transmission need any special electronics? my 1992 truck would be great with more gears.
It does need a stand-alone controller. We offer a package deal with one as an option. The video is a bit older and could use some more information, but mainly it is just an installation instruction.
@Curious Floyd - We have not tackled this one yet...Appx. 6-8 mos. out on R&D Projects at this time. Please keep checking-in.
Thanks for choosing Speed Gems Transmission Adapters!

Now all we need is SOMEONE to market a controller for the 10R80!!! But the 6R80 will do for now.
I would contact Halltech they seem to be on top of these newer controllers.
I need one for a Small block!
We are currently in the design phase for that. Look on our website around the end of September 2020 if all goes to plan.
Any chance this would work for a 351C block or are the top two bellhousing holes an issue?
@ Bryan Condrey - If using a SBF block/pattern, use Speed Gems Kit #FO2701 in the link below:

Thank you for choosing Speed Gems Transmission Adapters!
I so wanna use this in my 78 4wd, just need an adapter to use the transfer case out of it
Give us a call and see if we can help!
Did you guys get it figured out? I have same thing 78 4wd 460
I have 79 4wd and want to use the transfer it came with as well
Would this also bolt up to a NP205 transfer case or would we have to use the newer transfer case. Or is 4wheel drive out of the question due to one being 100% mechanical and the other being 100% electronic?
The controller for the 6R80 does not support the 4x4 transmissions from what we have known. It might be possible to make this work with a mechanical transfer case.
Would you say this would be a good fit for my 429 in my 78 bronco? Now it has the C6 connected to it now mated up to a Np205 mechanical transfer case?
But I'm looking to change out the C6 and also the 429 for a newer fuel injection 460 ,like a 90-91?
How’s the manual adapter coming?! I would love to put an mt-82 manual on my 460, I understand the flywheel difficulties w the clutch tho.. good luck!
We haven't made a formal announcement, but we do have it made already for any testers willing to go through with it. If you have an interest give us a call and we can let fill you in with the details! 763-767-4480
How heavy is that torque converter spacer, it looked to have some serious weight to it?
2lbs of aluminum
How much HP can the kit handle?
sweetness
Would this work on A86F250 4 by 4
Hi mate, now you’ve got me thinking, I’ve gone through several C6’s behind the 429 in a ‘71 LTD 2 door plus the 4:11’s get pretty tiring on the highway. I know nothing about late model gearboxes and am wondering how the C6 compares strength wise and also I’m currently using a 3000 rpm stall converter so what do I do there?
If your transmissions are burning through quicker than getting you from 0-60, go to a trusted transmission rebuilder and ask for their opinion on what transmission to use. Their recommendation could be you using the C6 still but with different internals. Especially if you got a big block engine, even unmodified, it can output a decent amount of HP/Torque.
@@speedgems3978 thanks mate, they’re not so much burning through as blowing up, the guy I use is good but it’s the fifty plus year old parts that are letting the team down so I either spend up big on aftermarket internals or go for a later trans that has the benefit of an overdrive. I’ve just moved from the city to the bush so I may even change to a six speed manual. Thanks for your suggestions.
I Wonder How much Torque a 2014 Mustang GT 6R80 can Take without going 4R200..?
It's going behind a 460/520 on pump gas with around 700hp. Street Strip Build.. 373 geared Ford Torino. Really wanting this Conversion 😍
Hey THANKS Alot
@ Brenda Yater - That's what we're here for! :)
www.transmissionadapters.com
love it a lot.
What all do you need to get the trans to work right I want to put this in my 94 f150 with a 460
If you go with the 6R80, you will need a stand alone controller which we can provide from our partners at US Shift. Give us a call for any more questions!
Buying this
Does the 6r80 come in 4x4 and what would you need computer wise to run some
Of these transmissions ?
There are some 6R80s that come from the F150 for example that have a transfer case, we recommend reaching out to Advance Adapters for any 4x4 or transfer case application. As far as the stand alone controller, we partner with US Shift for the stand alone controller, customers often tell us its a plug and play situation along with the initial set up. Give us a call and we can help you figure out what transmission to get specifically, (763) 767-4480
I've got a 75 Lincoln with 460, is there some difference with the older 460 blocks? Will this adapter fit my 1975 460?
From what we have known there is not any difference during their entire production run that ended around 1997ish
Tailshaft lengths.. your Lincoln would prob be a long tail
Any reason that this wouldn’t work with a 10r80? Pretty much the same case no?
Where can I get a kit, for my 71' Galaxy
I want the cart/ trolley for an engine run stand.
We actually make these in house as we need them. We would be willing to make one for you but it wouldn't be cheap to get it to you. They are super handy for doing our development.
I need this for my 59 Edsel.
Come and visit our site if you haven't already to see the kit or call us and we can help you out with your application!
I’m planning on installing a 6r80 on to my sbf 393 stroker, but I’m confused on witch transmission would work better for my application the one from a 5.0 f150 or the one from a 5.0 mustang gt? Or are can I use either or?
This kit will not work with your SBF 393. We are currently working on this kit and it is nearly ready. However, either 6R80 can be used as long as it was from the 5.0 or 5.4 V8. Also, these kits will work with the Ford Modular V8 transmissions as well like the 4.6 5.4 and the 6.8 V10.
@@speedgems3978 yes I’m am keeping up with you guys new SBF kit. It looks great, so as long it’s a 6R80 from a V8? Im just wondering which one can handle the most HP the one from the F150 or the one from the Mustang or can the both handle it the same?
@@ozielmadrigal9374 Well they are basically the same transmission but it comes down to gearing. From everything we have seen these transmissions from factory are capable of handling 1000hp. Obviously, if it use then who knows because you wouldn't know the maintenance history from past owners.
@@speedgems3978 thank you for the info, God Bless🙏🏽
@@ozielmadrigal9374 Not a problem.
Will this work on a 351/400m since it's the same block as a 429, 460?
It's not the same block, but they do use the same bell housing! So I would guess, YES!
Yeah, they are selling them as 351M/400/429/460 kits on their site, right in the title.
Definitely interested in what you guys come up with for manuals, a used TR6060 would be a lot cheaper than a new T56 Magnum
We can make that combination work currently. Please feel free to give us a call.
Is there a compatible manual transmission that could be mounted on a 460 BBF?
We currently do not have a kit for a manual transmission, we do have a kit to go to the Ford AOD automatic, but not to a manual unfortunately.

Translation of previous message, below:
'Hello friend, I do not speak English, only Spanish, but from a 390 engine from a 1972 f100 with a more modern automatic transmission, how does the transmission change?'
This is a badass kit. But does this work for a 90s 460 too? And does it rob power?
The 90’s 460 has the same block as carb’d 460’s down to ‘79
1979-1997 460's are the same block but just varied as far as application and EFI on the new engines. It may "rob" a slight bit of horse power but nothing that you would notice.
If I would have to venture a guess it would be less than 5hp. We have never had this engine on the dyno with and without our kit so It is hard to say exactly.
@@speedgems3978 thank you so much
@@meteor5452 thank you so much
how do i wire my on the ground start up
Is it strong enough to swap in a work truck? If Ford doesn't come out with the 6.8L Windsor next year I wanna swap a 460 and 6R80 in my F-150.
The 6R80 was the primary transmission put in F-150's from 2011+ These transmissions have shown to hold up to 1000hp. In our opinion it is one of the best transmissions currently available.
@@speedgems3978 I was actually talking about your adapter lol. But in other questions, is there anyway you folks can make an adapter for big block Fords to Allison 2000 with the round bellhousing? I'm not doubting you when you say the 6R80 is stout but I do plan to put my truck through some major abuse.
@@RBLUS_TY I think (destroked) offers that?
@@RBLUS_TY Nothing about the adapter would be hp rated. You'd blow a trans but the adapter parts don't take the load. They just act as connection device. So whatever you could build for hp, I don't see why it would stress and brake these parts.
Amigo hola no hablo idioma inglés solo español pero de un motor 390 de una f100 año 1972 con una caja automática más moderna como hace los cambios la transmisión
Where did you get those headers?
This would have been something the old owner would have sourced but I had to guess I would think Speedway.
What is the point of the torque converter adapter? Is it for using a non 6r80 torque converter?
Excellent question! It's to compensate the gap between the flexplate and the torque converter itself. Without it, the flexplate won't reach the torque converter and not move at all.
Would a transfer case that fits a c6 fit the 6r80?
If it is a divorced style transfer case I am sure you could make it work with some custom work. Also, you would need to consider the difference in sizes of the two transmissions.
@@speedgems3978 okay, thanks!
ford 460, should the flexplate weight be facing the 12 o'clock position ?
or be facing 180 degs the other way in the 6 o'clock position?
in relation to the hatchet weight in the front.
please help me, thanks
The flexplate being in 12 or 6 o'clock position shouldn't matter, as long as the welded side faces the engine and the nonwelded side faces the transmission. Call us for any more questions.
@@speedgems3978 I think you misunderstand the question.
in relation to the hatchet weight in the front of the motor, should the weight on the flexplate be 180 degrees from it or aligned with it. I have already destroyed one transmission by not having it correct.
@@EarthsMysterieswithKenKay Gotcha, was a little confused, thought the 460 was always internally balanced but that is not the case. You would need to have it diametrically opposite of the hatchet weight to then be "balanced", but please consult an engine builder to get a second opinion.
@@speedgems3978
yes, that makes sense to me.
I am waiting for my new transmission to be delivered in the next few days.
thank you for responding and thank you for your help.
@@speedgems3978 I couldn't find anyone that knew the correct answer. so I put it on as you suggested, and the engine is horribly out of balance. what should I do now?
should I take it all apart and then put it lined up with the hatchet weight?
Who makes a controller for the transmission?
We offer a package that includes a US Shift Stand-Alone transmission computer. Take a look at our package deals as you will save $125 dollars when bundling the kit together.
Will this mount to a 1997 truck 460 bolck?
yes
The 460 was the same from it's introduction until it went out of production in the late 90's.
Someone designed a piece of equipment that actually works on stuff should be illegal since you obviously put some thought into how to work on it. 😜🤣🤣
Nice adapter and machine work.
length of this vs the C6?
The 6R80 is roughly 30" long with the adapter plate. The C6 can be anywhere from 24-31" long depending on the application it came out of.

Does this kit work for 6r140 ? Thanks
Steve,
The 6R140 will not work as those were used on the Diesel engines and not the V8 gas as far as we can tell.
The 6R80 is a very robust transmission and holds a lot of power. Making it very suitable for most applications we have found. Feel free to give us a call.
Steve, the answer is yes. If you source a 6R140 from a gas, 6.2 Superduty, it'll have the same modular pattern as the 4R100 & 5R110.
@@AK_Ray why is the diesel different ? Thanks spooln272
@@MrBlackbutang because Ford likes to make things hard LOL, honestly I think it's because for 20 years the diesels were international built with an international bellhousing and when Ford came out with their 6.7 it was probably easier just to keep the same pattern. Just a hunch.
