- Emerson, Lake & Palmer ‘Lucky Man’
Celebrating ELPs 50th anniversary and the re-press of their super deluxe, career spanning CD/LP/book box set ‘Fanfare (1970-1997)’: elp.lnk.to/StoreID
New, beautifully animated lyric video of this seminal ELP track, released as a single in December 1970. The song is taken from the group's globally successful, self-titled debut album which reached No.4 in the UK and No.18 in the US in 1970.
Written by Greg Lake when he was 12 years old and recorded by the trio using improvised arrangements, ‘Lucky Man’ contains one of rock music's earliest instances of a Moog synthesizer solo.
Lyrics:
He had white horses
And ladies by the score
All dressed in satin
And waiting by the door
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
White lace and feathers
They made up his bed
A gold covered mattress
On which he was laid
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
He went to fight wars
For his country and his king
Of his honor and his glory
The people would sing
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died
Ooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooh, what a lucky man he was

I"m 66 years old now and remember when this song came out when I was early teenager...I loved it. Many of my friends back then didn't understand the lyric's then, but I felt them! Seen these guys in concert in Atlanta in the 70's, they were fantastic! Thank God I was born when music was talent, not computer generated crap! Rock on
Oh yes !!!!!
Absolutely...
I'm just another old man from a different time as well, just wondering where our world went.
I'm 65this time around and agree completely with what you say. There was a lot of talented musicians back in the late 60s to mid 70s. They all had to work their butts off to get the breaks they so well deserved. Real music played with real instruments
I'm 65 now, from the same era, and I agree with you.
👍👍👍
Greg Lake wrote this when he was 12 years old. Just think about that! What awesome talent.
Seems like the lyrics are a little sophisticated for a 12 year old to grasp and write....but then again.....amazing.
After putting down his Playboy magazine
Wow!
yes its blowing my mind
Crazy in an impressive way!
RIP Keith Emerson (November 2, 1944 - March 11, 2016), aged 71
And
RIP Greg Lake (November 10, 1947 - December 7, 2016), aged 69
You both will be remembered as legends.
Much too young, the both of them 😔
Scary to think my dad was born in 1946 and my mother in 1948---we're losing that generation by the week, it seems
I was born in the best music time ever , yeah I’m a Vintage Lady now and I still love my music from the 50’s , 60’s and 70’s ❣️

Keith Emerson didn’t really play music ...
He conjured sounds from somewhere in the deep universe and made them pass through their keyboards. God bless his soul.
Hi I recommend an indie song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
cool analogy
Vou emoldurar suas maravilhosas palavras !!!! Abraços do Brasil
Didn't Keith take those sounds and make them pass through his guitar?
Sorry I always associate this tune with Lake. He did write it.
The final keyboard solo gives me chills. RIP Keith, you are an eternal genius.
I don't know if they cooked it up or not but Greg Lake tells an INCREDIBLE story on how they put the Moog solo on the back end of that song. The story of Lucky Man is so outrageous that it has to be true.
Greg tells the story at the 13:00 minute mark.

IT'S A SYNTH KEYBOARD.
It's possible but I think it's a theremin.
Man what memories does this classic song bring to me, 1970..standing on my apt balcony as the sun rises in Houston..I remember thinking what was I going to do with my young 18 year old self..I had no idea at the time..just living, working and having a ball..then doing it all over again..boy, what i wouldn't give to just to go back for a day..to hug my loved ones and friends no longer here, and to say I love you one more time ..just one more time..😔🙏🕊️❤️🙏
Lost my virginity to this song. Best time of my life
Well said and how true.
Me too. One of my favorites.
60's and 70s great years
right there with you emilyh.8704 - Upstate New York - life is too short and it's so hard to alert the kids as to just how fast it goes...
That stereo sound going from left to right and back again is the magic that cannot be found in today's music
Really? You actually listen to today's "music"...? You need help, my friend.
Listen to Blow by Blow Jeff Beck , you ll love it , I ruined my hearing on a Walkman with that Cassette 😅
YES !
@@MrDanboyd3I had that L.P. in high school and I loved the song "Constipated Duck."😊
It can, in other prog rock bands like Tool. But there will never be another band like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer!
The legacy of ELP will never die
indeed: totally inmortal
oh oh oh what a lucky man he was
The drumming in this song is THE BEST!
I love the contrast between the pre-war, and wartime Lucky Man sections of the song. Pre-war, we have mostly light and gracious acoustic guitars. Wartime, enter the cold, low oscillating drone of the Moog synthesizer, whose electronic howls eventually take over the song. We go from the warm and gentle salad days of Edwardian England to the inhuman industrial reality of Flanders Fields. Brilliant song.
This song is a masterpiece.
This one of the Anthems that taught me the price of war. Still as timely now with my grandkids as it was for me in the Vietnam era.
STRAIGHT UP ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN /PLAYED
Headphones a must, when music was actually music. Thank you.
Even better on vinyl on a quality deck etc. Then good speakers will do the job.

I had the greatest Dad a kid could ask for. ELP were one of his favorite groups and I can't count the hours I spent nestled next to him on the couch listening to this amazing music. He's in his 80s now and still spends hours listening to his old favorites. He'll forever be my hero. Much love, Dad, from "Squeet" ...
Yer a good kid
Carl Palmer's best drumming. Very classy and creative.
My Dad recently passed and I miss him much now that he's gone. He was a 'lucky man' and I watched this video and song in memory of him. RIP❤ Larry Dec 15, 2021.
So sorry for your loss ❤️
not that "lucky"....he's dead
@@chrisleehey8079 what’s wrong with you?
I'm so sorry 😔💔🙏🕊

There will never be another band like ELP, over the top, willing to try anything, and unbelievable music. I miss seeing them live

They don't make music like this anymore. Great song.
Agree 4561z my number n hav a grandson hendrix ha peace if anyone remembers it i need counsiling it might rain tomorow
Yes they do
We listened in a black light poster room ,these guys rocked.
I have a vintage 1978 pioneer receiver this sounds as good as I've ever heard it. Classic rock requires class machines.
74 and still loving this group and this number♥️
A man who had pretty much everything he wanted, but in the end, no amount of happiness or wealth can save you from the scorn of war.
They didn't have TV then. Had to do something for fun. Had to work a little harder to get famous then.
"Hi I'm Saul Goodman."
Except that if your Daddy had enough money you could find a doctor who would attest to bone spurs that would prevent you from taking part in no other activity on earth except being a member of the military. The Lucky Man depicted in the graphic story here could have bought his way out if he didn't care about country and king, honor and glory, as Corporal Bone Spurs and his grandfather didn't, if all he cared about was self-preservation and money. I can perfectly understand that: No commitment to anyone but themselves. Just admit to it and don't pretend that you care about anyone else in order to have people "sing" about you without ever taking any risk on their behalf.
The song is very moving to someone who lived through Vietnam, during which I remember it playing, Iraq, Afghanistan and all the wars fought by other nations since the 1960's. The video is perfect.
No.
My next birthday I will be 70, my god where did the music go?
Video killed the radio star. Looks and show were more important than the music.

So are we, each of us, a lucky man.
After my recent trials and tribulations, I now know what it is like to be blessed and to be a lucky man!

Loved this song since the first day I heard it in the early 1970’s. Has a big meaning to Me, for I have an Uncle who is Listed MIA killed in Combat April 6,1942 Bataan Philippines 🇵🇭

Mr. Orzolick.. I don't know why, but when I read your comment on how you took off as a teen, traveled all those miles, no money & STILL accomplished your goal, took me to another time and place. And that place felt so good. The world has changed so much that things that I too experienced in my youth, wouldn't be possible today. Sometimes I get a little sad thinking that today's kids have no idea the freedoms that we once had. I grinned from ear to ear reading your story because I just know what kind of kid you were and I can bet that you have many interesting stories you could tell! Haha! Peace & health be with you and your family. 🌾🍂🍁🎃🎼🎶🤘
I’m 79 and I still love this song,amazing sound
I came for the Moog. Keith Emerson’s first try of a strange new machine, played to an arrangement he heard for the first time after coming back from the pub, laid down in one take.
The Moog and Me By Dick Hyman the God father of the moog machine.
Saw ELP when I was in high school. Got home and my and my dad said " your concert made the news as the loudest concert ever played at the Duluth,MN auditorium!
That ending! 😢❤ forever in love with your voice, Lake.
u like a Happy ending?
When I was still a teenager and learning the guitar, I heard this song. I was totally fascinated and learned this piece and played it over and over again. Even today, the song still exerts a strange fascination. It was still real music! Many thanks for the great time with ELP!
72 here. Love this song. Now my Grandaughter sings it with me..
I moved to Texas when I was 14 years old and I heard this song on a classic rock radio station. I remembered the keyboard solo for the next 20 years of my life trying to find what it was, and today I did. But now that I'm 34, I can appreciate everything else about the song and the meaning of the song.

Back in the 70s I loved listening to ELP records on the headphones. Fantastic sound.
Walkman
better live though
I remember hearing this for the first time in 1970. A friend bought it over and we sat down to listen. He kept saying “can you hear the synthesiser?” and we couldn’t hear it until about 03:21 when everyone went “wow!”. NOW we can hear the synthesiser!!!
❤synthesizer music
ELP, Yes, and King Crimson are the holy trinity of prog rock. Greg Lake was in two of them. What a legend.
Greg Lake is Awesome! ❤
You know it! Was lucky to see Yes on their ‘78 Tormato tour on a center revolving stage, can still picture it. Saw ELP too, fantastically gifted musicians❤
instead of yes, should be uriah heep
RIP Keith and Greg! Rock on Carl!
So timeless. Unlike so many other rock songs, this one has a clear message that actually bites. Any vet would pick up on this regardless of the country. What a lucky soldier, airman, and or sailor he or she was. Enough said.
Yes, I believe it is satire...💘 Long live Greg and ELP in our hearts 💕
it may have been written as such, but there are some of who woudl consider him truly lucky, to have died in battle, in defense of his nation.@@windstrucklady1
I remember my dad mentioning something about this band when he was still alive. He introduced me to my taste in music. I listened to Jimi Hendrix play guitar on cassette in awe as I waited for my dad to get off work in his truck.
That's great lover it Suits You the Best
Good story.
yeah cool dads are
cool to have u as a daughter wat a lucky man he was
Plus the onward onward onward drums. Like a heartbeat
I also am 66 years of age and this song is one I will always love and what a Lucky man I am !

Great song, great band. Was fortunate to attend ELP concerts in 1973 and again the following year.Unforgettable live performances!
Greg lake had such a beautiful voice
It is Sunday morning and the oldies station plays Frank Sinatra for two hours. I heard Frank singing then I turned another station on and this song was playing,Greg Lakes voice was so much better I couldn't believe it.

I just love isolating this song. Just hearing the bass, just the frums and just the guitar and just the singing and then putting it al together brings new meaning to the word enlightining. What a fantastic song and one off one of the greatest prog albums of all time.
Played this on repeat many times over the years, something just wells up from deep inside and I tear up. I am.77 and feel so lucky to have had the music of my generation/era.

I bought this my first ELP in 1970. Three friends and I were chilling out listening to oh what a " Lucky Man " he was. Laying betwixt two speakers I found myself in the speakers. Next I am on stage playing the music I'm listening to! Now, how good can this get? Hallelujah. I have Now arrived at the portal of the " Doors of Perception ". Beautiful song. Their music will live forever.🌹❤️🙏🏻

Never paid much attention to the lyrics. But like the album. Now I think. HE WAS. Then his luck must have run out ? Sounds like the similarity of Simon and Garfunkel music. I like that music. But wonder why the songs were worded the way they are but I get it. Pretty cool in a weard way. 🙂
Saw these Guy's in like 1977. I was 17.. Still Enjoying there Music now..😎
It was played in our early 70 TopTenHitParade & this song was different, our ears weren't used to listen to synthesizers, yet
MOOG. Thumbs up if you know what I mean.
It's a disgrace that ELP isn't in the Rock and Roll HOF.
Absolutely!
RRHOF HATES PROG ROCK......
That's an understatement for sure. Doesn't make much sense does it. The last time I saw them was in 1977 at Seattle King Dome. RIP Kieth and Greg.
They don't belong there. They belong to something higher, a MUCH higher class!

Masterpiece ❤
Once Upton a time, there was music. And what lucky m'en WE were to have enjoyed it.
Hello, Moog synthesizer !!....R.I.P. Keith & Greg .....😥🎹🎸
I love this song from when I heard it first, maybe when I was 13 or 14. That is more than 40 years ago, was one of the first songs I taught myself to play on the guitar. Worked great when played at the fire in the warm summer nights. But only recently I heard the story of this song from Greg Lake. And only now I hear all these incredible drum fills of Carl Palmer, the most impressive drummer I know, just unbelievable. Also unbelievable that this moog sequence was laid down just by coincidence. I would have loved to have that for another 5 Minutes.
Thanks for the brilliant music
That synth at the end is everything ❤❤❤ Beautiful instrument
Hauntingly beautiful...........
Saw ELP in 1977....unreal

About the best visual illustration of this i can think of. Fits the subject material in a moving way, and even has an early 70s feel to it like the era the song came out.
All i can say is...wow!!!
