After many years listening to it I came to the same conclusion. It is a perfect solo. Each and every note has purpose, weight and drives the passion in the delivery. The phrasing, the tone, the use and control of feedback, the dynamics and climax. It is a story unto itself. A masterpiece. It needs to be played loud on a top end stereo system or with high end headphones for the full effect.

@@davidyoung2606 it's underrated. If you ask anyone about 70's prog, they mention Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Camel... but a only a few remember Jethro Tull
@davidyoung2606 Agree!!! They were never underrated, absolutely HUGE band of the late 1960's/mostly 70's!!! You just had to be there. I'm 66, soon to be 67 and Jethro Tull was massively popular when I was in high school and college!
Saw Tull in concert on the Jersey shore one summer. With my first wife. Who knew that life would be blown away and I would spend time broke, alone and on the road! Seeing the world with a new set of eyes. Years have gone by. I am sitting on a country hill, housed, well fed, loved and protected. Proud to say I have spent my life helping others as an EMT, firefighter, public investigator. I have seen the world thru Aqualung’s eyes.
I'm 67 years old now. This brings back so many awesome memories from my childhood. I bought the album "Stand Up" when it first came out in July '69. I was mesmerized. A week later I went to the store and purchased "This Was". I was 12 years old. Tull was my favorite band. "Benefit", "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" were all incredible albums. In April 1972, my best friend and I rode our bikes to the Forum in Inglewood, CA to buy tickets for the "Thick as a Brick" concert. On 23 June, 1972, we again rode our bikes to The Forum to watch the concert. It was the greatest day of my life to that point. It was the concert of a lifetime. Great music, unbelievable musicianship...even a lot of humor! Ian Anderson is a genius. And I felt like the luckiest guy in the world!
Echo from CO...went to concerts late 60s at Anaheim Convention Center; Doors, Jefferson Airplane, then Starship, many more...I was 12, too...hard to believe, but seemed very normal at the time...music was and still is a huge part of my life!! Awesome times!!!
Saw Jethro Tull in Germany '80, '81 can't recall... it is one of those things, those experiences, experiences of many, that give you a look around the edges of life, changes you in ways you know not, and feels like yesterday and a dozen lifetimes ago... the true wonder is that such artists exist and that they all share a glimpse of what we hope, but cannot see... it is us that must change the visions we see today to what we wish we were seeing... strength in one, strength in tens of millions of ones.
I saw them in Munich in the spring of '81 (the 'A' tour). Back then there was festival seating, so if you got there early you were in the front (which I was). Great experience.
My high school rock band learned Aqualung back in 1972, my sophomore year. Took us all day one Saturday. But when we thought we had it, we were really proud of such an achievement. I just wish we had videos. Anderson is one of the greatest composers of all time and will eventually be ranked as such.

Those who pine for the "good old days" just aren't looking far enough back to see history rhymes. Socrates complained about the indifference of youth in his time...no different than the complaints of youth in the 60s...or today. The rich and powerful hoard; the masses put their heads down and live life, unwilling to look ahead to prepare for the future. It's human nature.
Ian is the classist musician, I ever met. In Tucson 1978 we sat and talked. shared a joint. As he was leaving to start the concert, he turned and gave me one of his joints. I should have saved it retrospectively.
The songs from the 70's were the absolute best ever. So glad to be in Europe during those times. So many concerts, so many friends, beer and girls. By the way Ian Anderson's wife wrote the lyrics to "Aqualung".
@@ThePlagueGameing Me too, 4 times over the years and wish I had gone to more of their concerts!! The GOAT in my opinion, which is saying a lot considering the competition from the bands in the greatest decades in the history of music, 1960's and ' 70's!! I know, the 80's and 90's were great too, but not like the previous two decades, which sadly will/can never be matched musically!!! Just glad I was born in the late 1950's so was there for it all!!!
I've admired this music since I ran away from high school when my theatre arts teacher and my piano teacher tried to keep me in high school. Now I understand. And have since been back to school THANKS to powerful MUSICIANS.
Martin Barre's masterpiece is only the greatest rock guitar solo in the history of rock and roll. And if you don't think so, it's because you didn't crank it up loud enough.
Marvellous, and disturbingly necessary clip. This song being used in this way, to denounce injustice and poverty is a gift. Congratulations to Sam Chegini and Ian Anderson for it.
I always thought this song, with its empathy and social justice theme, was an outlier on the album and for Jethro Tull in general. Not that I think Ian is a hard-hearted person or anything, but most of the Tull songs tend to be about thinking for yourself, seizing the day, and so forth... more of a libertarian theme. I always figured he included this one on the album just to butter up his woman, who had a hand in writing it.
Injustice and poverty comes from one party from it's slave power days to Jim crow to KKK to segregation to LBJ to this clown racist dimentia joe nice going democrats
This was my first Tull album and after a month knew all the words off by heart. Remember singing at a party with a guy the whole album, and we became best of friends for life. Thank you Ian and Co.
Yeah, It's dead. As Ian Gillan recently said in an interview, "today's music doesn't reach me." So sad. No future generation will ever experience something like this again......
I was just a rebel teenager in Mérida-Venezuela about 31 years ago, when I was captivated by one of the most powerful mixture of sounds that came to me through the radio. So I started recording the Jethro tull's songs using cassettes to repeat on and on the great sound experience. It was a very good time to remember.
Remember listening to this as a 13 year old, and my mom heard it and couldn’t believe I was listening to music from 20 years before. That was in the 90s.

I recently saw Ian Anderson being interviewed by Dan Rather (taped last year). He’s such an incredibly nice guy and is so grateful for everything he has.

@@MakerToolsthank you. I was watching this and saw a US Serviceman and odd imagery that had seemed to have little to do with early 18th century London society and commentary of mores and religious dogma. Not what I expected been relative in todays world. The video I held in my head for the last fifty years still manifest in my brain. Jethro Tull has always been my favorite and as difficult as this world has become I feel I will make it " With You There To Help Me Through".
Great record. "To Cry You A Song" & "Teacher" alone make this a must have for Tull fans and classic rock aficionados alike, not to mention the rest of the album. To me, Martin's riffs & chords in "To Cry You A Song" are just exactly perfect. 🎸

73 here and still listening to Jethro Tull ❤
you got me beat by 3 years. Saw him 3-4 times that I can remember as the snots ran down my nose 😤
70 and listening too.
75 here and still hanging with it. The golden age.
71 and counting!
68 y aquí aún, presente desde México😅
Drove around in a luxury car with premium stereo and cranked it to the heavens! I'm 70 now and would still do that with Tull
a bit ironic that you're blasting a song about the tribulations of the indigent in a luxury car.
Love it.
I am 65 , have been listening to your music since I was about 10. Jethro Tull is my favourite group. You are a genius. Greetings from Poland.❤
Ditto from south africa and the uk now
Polish guy here loves Tull..Nasdrowia
Nothing like a classic Jethro tull song
Im 68 and loved this band and songs still rocking in 2024 the best
saw them live in 73 in their prime good lord made me a fan for life ....keep rocking
One of the GREATEST songs ever made. A true masterpiece!
Aqualung reminds me of creepy Joe Biden. 🤢
Really? Not the other guy who has been found guilty of a sex crime?
@@jeffw2228 Always loved the song, but
you're right, creepy Joe for sure. Not to mention all the other stuff he's done like ruin the country! Ugh

this song never gets old. its burnout proof
Echo from Texas brother
1970 was the first time for Me ... Lots of partial memories ... no photos or canceled ticket stubs. :)-
I saw them in Munich in the spring of '81 (the 'A' tour).
Good time s
Along side folk... No doubt.
Die Musik hat mich unwahrscheinlich fasziniert.
Es berührte deine seele! Stimpt?! 😊
You're not alone. 😅
We are all one decision away from being Aqualung. A lot of 'social commentary' updated for a 50 year old song. It fits. Thanks Ian.
Or simply 1 paycheck away
I love is band, the my music predilect.
Uh sorry, I'm not a pedophile

Prescient. Powerful. 50 years down the road and it feels like we’re losing ground. Ian warned us not to look away
we never understö0D Him ^ ^ ?
Those who pine for the "good old days" just aren't looking far enough back to see history rhymes.
Socrates complained about the indifference of youth in his time...no different than the complaints of youth in the 60s...or today. The rich and powerful hoard; the masses put their heads down and live life, unwilling to look ahead to prepare for the future. It's human nature.
Ian is the classist musician, I ever met. In Tucson 1978 we sat and talked. shared a joint. As he was leaving to start the concert, he turned and gave me one of his joints. I should have saved it retrospectively.
He gave you that joint to smoke. It's what he wanted. 😉
Things that never happened for 200 Alex
The songs from the 70's were the absolute best ever. So glad to be in Europe during those times. So many concerts, so many friends, beer and girls.
By the way Ian Anderson's wife wrote the lyrics to "Aqualung".
This song changed my life.

Not many remembered after 53 days, and not without good reason!
Jethro Tull is way up there with Rock n Roll's greatest.
Timeless. A Masterpiece. In a time were the great Rock bands ruled the world.
BEST BAND...EVER!!
Enään ei tule koskaan olemaan yhtä samanlaista, mahtavaa
70 and still loving it!. Fantastic players. Had the privilege of seeing them live 4 times. Off the plate!!
Classic! Fifty years have passed, even scary.
A somewhat under appreciated guitar solo….impeccable.
“And the flowers bloom like madness in the spring “
Martin Barre's masterpiece is only the greatest rock guitar solo in the history of rock and roll. And if you don't think so, it's because you didn't crank it up loud enough.
Always been one of my favorite solos
And the sick riff that goes with the song, one of the most iconic rock guitar riffs IMO
These musicians were way ahead of their time. Love them.
I think they were at the right time and place. Especially I got them for most of my life!
Me too
Marvellous, and disturbingly necessary clip. This song being used in this way, to denounce injustice and poverty is a gift. Congratulations to Sam Chegini and Ian Anderson for it.
I agree with you. 🤜🏻🤛🏻

The guitar solo and bass at that time is just perfect.
Jethro Tull ROCKS 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Not only a premier band of the 70s but an essential album. Pretty much every albumTull put out in the 70s was killer. Can't go wrong with 70s Tull.

The solo takes me to another place... damnnn
Ian Anderson is a genius. I simply love this band. I had to thank my mother for showing me these songs. Jethro has always been her favorite group. ❤🇧🇷
The personality he gave any flute he picked up still amazes me. Ian Anderson, the best in my generation. And probably in every persons life time.
Tull at his best, a timeless classic.
Remember listening to this as a 13 year old, and my mom heard it and couldn’t believe I was listening to music from 20 years before. That was in the 90s.
And sabbath purple yes elp...we were ahead of our time..we left glam behind.

I recently saw Ian Anderson being interviewed by Dan Rather (taped last year). He’s such an incredibly nice guy and is so grateful for everything he has.
Hello Kay, How are you doing?
I kinda wish I had a Dollar 💵 for every time I listened to this song in 1971 on my LP. It only took me 52 years to watch this exquisite video to go with it for my imagination and I still says that’s CROSS-EYED MARY at 5:05 sitting on the park bench whose ATTENTION is drawn by Aqualung
Yeah. It's her imo.
"Eyeing little girls with bad intent" means he saw Mary who had bad intent. Real subtle change of meaning.
I hated the visual. It was one of our favorites back then. The cartoons here had nothing to do with the song. I smell social programmers.
@@MakerToolsthank you.
