This song is the first track and the title track on the 1971 Jethro Tull album titled 'Aqualung'.
Lyrics:
Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent
Snot running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes
Hey, Aqualung
Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run
Hey, Aqualung
Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck
Whoa, Aqualung
Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely
Taking time the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog and warms his feet
Feeling alone, the army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung my friend, don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see, it's only me
Do you still remember
December's foggy freeze?
When the ice that
Clings on to your beard was
Screaming agony (Hey!)
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
With deep-sea-diver sounds
And the flowers bloom like
Madness in the spring
Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely
Taking time the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog and warms his feet
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Feeling alone, the army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung my friend, don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see, it's only me
Me-me-me-me-me
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Whoa, Aqualung
Aqualung, the album” to many, is Tull’s masterpiece. The title track and “Locomotive Breath,” with their catchy riffs, would be joined by “My God,” “Cross-Eyed Mary,” and “Hymn 43” as classic rock staples. There’s no arguing with its commercial success, having sold more than seven million copies and continuing to outsell anything in the back catalog.

68 years old and still listening to music of the greats in 2024
Seventy here.👍
Me too... In 1971 when this album first came out I was camping out on my sister's couch. She heard the line "Sitting on a park bench eyeing little girls with bad intent..." and just went ballistic on me. Then she smelled pot smoke on me and redoubled her efforts to demean me for being a disgusting hippie and all that stupidity. So when she took a breath, I screamed right back at her saying something like _"You're on my case about me choosing of my own free will to smoke pot, yet you involuntarily shove Darvon down your 10 year old daughter's throat because she's hyperactive? She's just a kid and you're a hypocrite!"_ Shut her up just like that... But I had enough or her right wing nonsense and found somewhere else to camp out.
For the next two weeks my cousin and I drove up in front of her house and blasted that song as loud as his cheepo car stereo could get, just to rub it in. :)
It is kind of sad how we have allowed the FOOS take control; ?
Masterpieces are timeless
They sure are timeless even a young 26 years old like me love those classics
Jethro Tull was one my dad's favorite bands. When I was a kid, he would CRANK their songs to 11. It was the most passionate I ever saw him be. May he rest knowing that he bore a son who loves these guys.
I love your comment! I've loved this band since I was 12 in 1970 when my older sister bought Aqualung. Lifelong superfan ever since and still listen to Tull on a daily basis on UA-cam, walking or whenever. Aqualung & Thick as🚫a Brick might still be my favorite albums, but so many it's hard to say..Your dad had great taste in music! Nice way to honor him by listening to his favorite band.😌
I was a high school football manager. I was 12 in 1972. In the locker room we had a single 8 track player with colored lights that blinked on and off. This album was on the machine every day all the time. I fell in love with this band and followed them throughout the ages. Im glad you have this memory of your dad, memories can special like that.
That's precious man
My Dad is still alive, but I have the same memories. Bless your old man.
I saw them in concert in 1973 when I was 20. One of the best concerts ever. Here I am in my 70s and this album sounds as good as ever.
Ian Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Robert Plant, Greg Lake, Keith Emerson, Jimmy Page... an incredible generation of musicians. I love them.
Faltou Hendrix
Syd Barret is better than Roger Waters
ritchie blackmore
And Fish from Marillion!
Legacy for the humanity
Thank you Mr. Anderson for your kindness towards less fortunate folks like myself. I've been homeless and I'm a recovering alcoholic. I am Aqualung. God bless Ian Anderson.
Love Jethro Tull’s music ever, hope you’re better now👋🌺🥰hello from İstanbul,Turkey

My dad was born in 1954, he don't know english so well, but he say me that when hear these music dreamin' and feel free. He passed away in 2015 and missed me so much.
So sorry about your Dad. Lost mine too.
@@jjj55561 I still dream of mine after almost 40 years gone. saw these guys 7 or 8 times 1970-80.
I'm 67 years old now. This brings back so many awesome memories from my childhood. I bought the album "Stand Up" when it first came out in July '69. I was mesmerized. A week later I went to the store and purchased "This Was". I was 12 years old. Tull was my favorite band. "Benefit", "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" were all incredible albums. In April 1972, my best friend and I rode our bikes to the Forum in Inglewood, CA to buy tickets for the "Thick as a Brick" concert. On 23 June, 1972, we again rode our bikes to The Forum to watch the concert. It was the greatest day of my life to that point. It was the concert of a lifetime. Great music, unbelievable musicianship...even a lot of humor! Ian Anderson is a genius. And I felt like the luckiest guy in the world!
Echo from Texas brother
My Mom was a big Tull fan when she was pregnant with me. Ian is my middle name after Mr. Anderson. I'm very honored & proud. Aqualung is one of my top ten all time favorite albums. They are so unique & talented. Each & every member. Phenomenal rock band. Right up there with Rush, Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Doors, & Pink Floyd.
Of course there up there with those bands if anything they may even stand alone. There awsome!
Rush don't count. too lame
Ian is the classist musician, I ever met. In Tucson 1978 we sat and talked. shared a joint. As he was leaving to start the concert, he turned and gave me one of his joints. I should have saved it retrospectively.
He gave you that joint to smoke. It's what he wanted. 😉
One of the best guitar solos ever recorded in my opinion.
After many years listening to it I came to the same conclusion. It is a perfect solo. Each and every note has purpose, weight and drives the passion in the delivery. The phrasing, the tone, the use and control of feedback, the dynamics and climax. It is a story unto itself. A masterpiece. It needs to be played loud on a top end stereo system or with high end headphones for the full effect.
Hands down. Give the Lynyrd Skynyrd tune Am I Losin' a listen if you are unfamiliar with it. The solo is similar in being melodic rather than show-offy or incendiary like so many other solos.
Jimmy Page had just walked into the control room at the beginning of the solo and was watching. Barre initially wanted to quit the take and go talk to him, but he pushed through instead. Seems to have worked out well.
In the top five with free ride
Yes it is one of the best guitar solo I ever heard in my life , is perfect and have an outstanding sentimentalism, Jethro Tull without Martin Barre never will be Jethro Tull , today is Ian Anderson band not JT ,
The greatest classic rock song ever written about a homeless man ever written besides ive been homeless off and on now for about ten years now so i can really relate to this song believe me i know the good lord and classic rock music i'm listening to this great classic rock song of all time high on weed and meth I really appreciate good classic rock music right? but now i want to quit meth please pray for me i'm going to need it God Bless anyone who reads this!👍 🎸🤳🙏 Amen 🙏 and Amen 🙏

Saw them in the 80's, Krest of a Knave tour, this was amazing live.
My dad passed away this past October and Jethro Tull was one of he's favorite bands.
As a teenager he would play this song for me and to this day I'm still a fan of it. RIP dad, miss you 💙
At least your Dad was cool, mine liked the Carpenters when he was young😭
I might be meeting up with your Dad soon, I'm 82 years young and have just been diagnosed with lung cancer, I've loved JT since forever. Love and respect from Perth Australia. 😎👋🎶🎵🎶🎵🦘

One of the most underrated bands of all-time. They get relegated to second-tier by too many people. Tull was top-tier all the way.
Underrated? Not in my lifetime and I'm 68 🇨🇦
@@davidyoung2606 it's underrated. If you ask anyone about 70's prog, they mention Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Camel... but a only a few remember Jethro Tull
Pues yo sí que recuerdo a Tull, de aquella década de los 70 ,y acabo de cumplir 68 añitos. Y aún continuo oyendo su música 🎶
@davidyoung2606 Agree!!! They were never underrated, absolutely HUGE band of the late 1960's/mostly 70's!!! You just had to be there. I'm 66, soon to be 67 and Jethro Tull was massively popular when I was in high school and college!
Never underrated in Canada... we played Jethro Tull constantly at parties for 20 years
My high school rock band learned Aqualung back in 1972, my sophomore year. Took us all day one Saturday. But when we thought we had it, we were really proud of such an achievement.
I just wish we had videos.
Anderson is one of the greatest composers of all time and will eventually be ranked as such.

Socrates complained about the indifference of youth in his time...no different than the complaints of youth in the 60s...or today. The rich and powerful hoard; the masses put their heads down and live life, unwilling to look ahead to prepare for the future. It's human nature.
Marvellous, and disturbingly necessary clip. This song being used in this way, to denounce injustice and poverty is a gift. Congratulations to Sam Chegini and Ian Anderson for it.
I agree with you. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I always thought this song, with its empathy and social justice theme, was an outlier on the album and for Jethro Tull in general. Not that I think Ian is a hard-hearted person or anything, but most of the Tull songs tend to be about thinking for yourself, seizing the day, and so forth... more of a libertarian theme. I always figured he included this one on the album just to butter up his woman, who had a hand in writing it.

Timeless. A Masterpiece. In a time were the great Rock bands ruled the world.
Saw Jethro Tull in Germany '80, '81 can't recall... it is one of those things, those experiences, experiences of many, that give you a look around the edges of life, changes you in ways you know not, and feels like yesterday and a dozen lifetimes ago... the true wonder is that such artists exist and that they all share a glimpse of what we hope, but cannot see... it is us that must change the visions we see today to what we wish we were seeing... strength in one, strength in tens of millions of ones.
1970 was the first time for Me ... Lots of partial memories ... no photos or canceled ticket stubs. :)-
I saw them in Munich in the spring of '81 (the 'A' tour). Back then there was festival seating, so if you got there early you were in the front (which I was). Great experience.

I was just a rebel teenager in Mérida-Venezuela about 31 years ago, when I was captivated by one of the most powerful mixture of sounds that came to me through the radio. So I started recording the Jethro tull's songs using cassettes to repeat on and on the great sound experience. It was a very good time to remember.
I recently saw Ian Anderson being interviewed by Dan Rather (taped last year). He’s such an incredibly nice guy and is so grateful for everything he has.

@@jasonjohnson5773 It was a statement on the state of social issues back then. People shrinking their worldview ("turned our gaze from the castles in the distance, eyes cast down on the paths of least resistance") , distorting facts ("slandering the sacred halls of truth"), hypocritical leaders, people and leaders driven by animosity, disdain for experience ("scoffing at the wise"), leaders acting out of anger or negativity ("ancient nobles showering their bitterness on youth"). You mean "weaned," but yes indeed, and cheers!
@@EducationMattersYes name checks out.
Led Zeppelin IV, The Yes Album/Fragile, Nursery Crime, Islands, Tarkus / Pictures at an Exhibition... and go.
@@EducationMattersYes Both spellings just may be correct in this case. Thank you. :)
@@tixximmi1 No, not in this case.
Thanks to Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson and his band...
Efa tamin'ny 1974 no haiko io groupe io, tsy dia fantatsika gasy, tena hafa kely ny style ary tena mahay daholo...
andramo henoina daholo ary ankafizo ny compositions na studio na live...
Fa henoy koa Genesis sy ELP (Emeyrson, Lake and Palmer) : to sell england by the pound ohatra, Trilogy...
Saw him in concert!
Jethro Tull is the quintessence of Rock! 🤘
Great guitar solo,
Incredible vocals,
Powerful Drums...
This is Jethro Tull, one of the best bands in the universe.
I heard the Zircons from Mars were pretty good....(you did say the universe , didn't you ?)
Lol
In other words a great fuckin song
Crazy that such an old song gers a music video now. Shows how much we developed in such a short time. This was basically a lifetime ago for many peolple but the creators are still kicking.
Viva.o.rock.sempre.e.eternamente..sempre.de.verdade........
Definitely one of my most influencing albums, a masterpiece.
Ian Anderson is one of the most creative musicians in Rock´s History. Awesome songwriter. He is the really The Scotland Pride. Than you so much for your visit to México!!!!!!. God bless you, Ian!!!!!!
My late brother Chris loved any music by Jethro Tull, and this was one of my brother's favorite songs by Jethro Tull.
This is the best interpretation of the meaning of this song.
The best road trip music
I've just cryied watching this videoclip for its beautiness and message that speak to us in a very same way that the lyrics did 50 years ago. Happy 50 years of Aqualung release, thank you Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evans, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker for such great songs from this album!
Cried? Are you Transgender?
@@timflaherty8389 Why , is your mother ?
You don’t get a round Mouth from eating square Meals. I’ll send you a Hanky.
@@timflaherty8389 I'm pretty sure crying isn't an ability unique to trans people, but if it is, then I'm glad to have this power
No offense to the late Glenn Cornick (R.I.P.), but it was Jeffrey Hammond(-Hammond) on bass on the Aqualung album.
Una emozione incredibile ascoltare Ian Anderson dal vivo A Bologna: Uno spettacolo incomparabile da artisti leggendari. Ancora oggi in auto sempre Jethro Tull.!!!! Grazie
Good straight-up rock'n'roll that evokes memories of the '70's ... good times.
When I saw this video, it was like hearing the song again for the first time in1971 when I was 17. Although I might have heard it performed live by Jethro Tull in 1973, I haven’t been so affected by the song ever since. The animators did an incredible job of recreating the despair and hopelessness on the faces of the refugees.
An epic masterpiece 50 years on. An immortal classic.
The greatest generation of music ever. Unmatched by any other. Great video
I have to say, My Name is Ian Mathews, my dad was in love with this band and he named me after the lead singer, I have a tattoo of Ian standing on one leg with the words aqualung above him. after a 29 years of listening to this band and listening to this song, they just now come out with an awesome trippy music video. I'm totally beside myself.
Thats dope Ian my dad just passed down all his old records this was one I got dope era in time for music
