Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

It's February 2025. It's a great song. Brings tears and memories of the past. ❤
people make mistakes, music can heal it
RIP Keith Emerson (November 2, 1944 - March 11, 2016), aged 71
And
RIP Greg Lake (November 10, 1947 - December 7, 2016), aged 69
You both will be remembered as legends.
And now Carl Palmer is the only one standing😭
Í saw him in 1883 with Asia, and in 2020 what a great drummer.
Not in the rock hall of fame 😮, what a crazy thing
@@mikemissry8025 not them, not Jethro Tull
I guess you have to include some blues and soul to be considered.
Palmer is next.
Sitting on my porch steps. The sun is going down soon. Living right by the woods hearing the birds chirp. Listening to this song adds to the already awesome ambience. Much love from upstate NY!
Yes ' may as well move in with Mother Nature.
A true moment of your divinity claimed in real time and thank you for sharing it with us. God bless you

@@RichardCobey nice brother. I was up in Pulaski, NY at the Salmon Run.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer are part of the Acoustic Alchemy.
... and Why is Acoustic particularly Important ... 🎉
Takes me back to when I was 15 years old living a carefree life now I'm 66 years old and it still gives me the feelings I had when I was a teenager. Beautiful music from three of the most talented artists of the progg' rock era. God bless keith and Greg🙏🙏

Well said my friend. The expression may be overused, but this song is truly timeless.

Music can take you away from negative feelings. Greg Lake was unbelievable in concert. Now that he is gone, I have to look back & feel lucky to have seen him perform. Music can soothe the soul and can give reasons to carry on
You my friend were meant to be here!❤
It wasn‘t your time to go. We cannot decide when it is over.
A song that is truly timeless...
Back in Prehistoric times (before the internet), I was driving back to school in the winter. I had smoked a joint and soon found myself heading into a snowstorm. This song came on the radio; the entire experience was surreal.
Since then, this song has forever reminded me of winter and falling snow.
True skilled and talented band.
@rocketrudolf3854 So true. Greg Lake had so much success as a singer, songwriter and guitarist with King Crimson, ELP and solo. Was so shocked when Greg and Keith passed away in the same year.
@bluemoon-20. Just a wonderful description of that era.☄️💥🌙
@claudettenicholson5183 Thanks. I know that era gets a lot of criticism for some of its music and fashion (polyester suits anyone?), but I truly believe the decade of the 1970s, especially the early part, produced the greatest, most inspired music in rock history. From the Beginning is a perfect example.
@bluemoon_20. Amen🍄
I liked it when I was a teenager 50 years ago, I still like it in 2024...
One of the most beautiful songs ever, words, music and feeling.
Лучшая композиция группы.
I think such an appropriate piece it will be at my passing it’s brilliant!
Well said!!!
I agree 🎵🎵🎶👍
Many songs hold meaning but wow to think that anyone that young could have that kind of insight is amazing. And oh yes, most beautiful song.
I'm 64 now I was a teen when it came out. Still has that wonderful effect on me. I feel blessed my youth had music like this as a soundtrack.
Same here. Our generation had such great music , ELP. ELO. Robin trower, Elton John , Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The doors, Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens , Jim Croce Kansas , Peter Frampton, Steve Miller, Thin Lizzy, Rush, Mamas & the papas, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones it just goes on and on. No other generation in our lifetime will be able to experience that many master artists in a 60 year span.
We were definitely a blessed generation with the plethora of incredible music and artists. What a great soundtrack of life.
Oh man, absolutely! I’m 68!
Me too.I miss you Honey.
All of them.
I can't " deprogram " myself from the 70s and 80s Music. Masterpieces like this have no expiry date. 👍👍👍👍
So True
I feel so blessed to have grown up with the best music! 70's music brings back ao many memories of youth and a different time and place!

So privileged to have seen them in concert for their Brain Salad Surgery tour. At 71, their music still amazes me.
Yes indeed privileged. Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside.✌️😊💕

Ohh logan! That’s funny!
This wasn't recorded using a mini moog. It was a full sized moog which was gigantic.
Thank you for the detail.
I get emotional when I listen to this song.
All of their hits are awesome and sexy to me.
Never tire of listening to this song….gives me a warm vibe inside. RIP Greg Lake and Keith Emerson. “They” just don’t make music like this anymore. So glad I grew up in that era…
Like the great classical composers, this song will still sound fresh hundreds of years in the future.
Warms the soul and induces time travel back to 72 in my friends basement. Tears remembering so many friends who have passed.
Same here kdarby.. I have so many friends that have passed… It always brings tears 😭 to my eyes… Ty for sharing..

BEAUTIFUL SONG, and I am AMAZED that the producer, RICHCRAFT sampled this for an R 'N B song for AMERIE....("Got To Be There").
BRILLIANT!! 💛💛💛💛💛
Emerson Lake Palmer probably one of the most underrated bands of the 1970s. Not even in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. But yet listen to this music and hear for yourselves. Musicians extraordinaire!! They take you places...❤
Can't believe they're not in RRHOF !
and yet some much lesser groups were commondered into it.😠
It’s a disgrace 😢
Better out of that pathetic thing... groups Asia Free Boston Grand Funk Railroad Iron Maiden Hawkwind Jethro Tull King Crimson Pixies Rainbow Slade Montrose Supertramp Ten Years After Thin Lizzy Tool Toto UFO Uriah Heep, also not in?! Wtf!!

Not easy to choose one out of his many splendid.
Magnificent...after 50 years...Still Magnificent ❤
Original supergroup, original prog rock. They don’t get the credit they deserve. Musicianship on a different level from the era. Love em and show them to someone .
My absolute favorite song
👍
ELP is real time machine. You hear and come back at 70'
About a year ago, I was listening to some random "70's Yacht Rock" playlist when this song stopped me dead in my tracks. Feelings of pure melancholy flooded the banks of my mind with childhood memories that I could somehow touch, feel and smell!! (That's when you know the song is a true musical masterpiece.) Before it even ended, I knew I was going to be replaying it at least 3 more times...in a row!! I quickly became obsessed with having to play it on a daily basis...morning, noon and night ... at work, at home and in the car....yet I still couldn't grow tired of it!!
One night after my 10 yr old fell asleep in my bed , I opted to leave him be and turn in early myself. Apparently, my brain embraced the opposing plan so I restlessly tossed and turned in frustration until the voice in my head whispered ,"From the Beginning" . 😂The whisper became louder and constant until I eventually caved and put the song on but accidentally hit the repeat option 🤦♀😄. By the time we woke the next morning, the first thing out of my son's mouth was, "MOM, I know you love this song but I think you're actually addicted to it!" All we could do was laugh. We later figured out that it played approximately 135 times for 9 hours straight! 🤣🤣👍✌
(P.S.- The next night, my son admitted to me that he actually didn't mind it playing while he slept and that because of the song , he had one cool dream after another the whole night❤)
Glad to have stumbled upon this gem once again. Its a great feeling to revisit the archived files of ones soul! This will ALWAYS remain in the top 4 of my "All-Time" favorite songs in life!! Thank you Kieth, Greg, and Carl for your contribution to the music world and the legacy you built!
You had a wonderfull experience.
Thank you for sharing. I was born the year this song came out and it still resonates within my soul decades later!!!
The music of your teen years is your anchor. You never give it up. It's when life was amazing.
I remember this beautiful harmony ❤when it was brand new! It still as magical now! ❤
I still remember the first time I saw ELP at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago I was so amazed at how Awesome they sounded live! It was one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever attended. RIP Greg, RIP Keith😢…

I saw them live in Harrisburg PA November 1971 3 months later I was in the US Navy starting a 20 year career. I'm 72 and have survived many things. They still stir my soul.

I’m sitting in my bathroom 🚽 smoking a joint thinking about my dad driving the car and I’m in the back of the car where the glass is laying on that shelf part where I lay my head on the speakers as he drinking Budweiser pull tab and this song is playing, then about a mile before we get home he tells me get up front before my mom sees me riding like that 😂

I get goosebumps every time I here their music, for well over 50 years now ! Saw them live in Montreal back in 1977, OMG, and then they put that live show on an album=BOOM! That was cool, and severely fuck'n cold! LOL.. I will miss these three phenom musicians and their extraordinary craftsmanship in music. THANK YOU!! God bless you too.
I sang along with this song back then, and now, at 66 I sing it in a band trying to do it justice

It’s all clear you were meant to here! Born the year this came out and still to this day, 2/1/2025, resonates within my soul! ❤
I can remember this at one of my first parties in college. It was so surreal. I was able to shut out all of the noise and just listen to this. So much good music back then, everywhere you turned. I miss it.

I’m mesmerized by this song by Emerson, Lake and Palmer From the Beginning. I’m trying to remember the mainstream hit they had that put them on the map in the first place but quite honestly this song has me spellbound ❤🙏⭐💎
His voice is so unique and unwavering ❤

I discovered this song in the late 1980s and have been listening to it ever since. An anecdotal story I’d like to share about this song. While sitting in a coffee shop in LA back in the early 1990s with my girlfriend, a busker playing an acoustic guitar was taking requests, and I asked him to play from the beginning. I was surprised that he knew the song and he obligingly played it well. My girlfriend at the time asked me who sings this song, and I introduced her to ELP.
Eliana, wherever you may be, I hope you're doing well. You are the one that got away.
I rember when that song came out, it's just as entertaining today as it was then, it is a timeless Jule 😎
I grew up on Emerson Lake and Palmer 63 now and I still love them . Mellow you calm you just carry your troubles away. Thanks Junior

I’m 29 and just discovering this. It just has that effect to put you in the best mood or either makes you nostalgic for anything that happened in your life, and ultimately either way makes you very emotional….
One of the greatest groups of our time
When us old farts say they don’t make music like they used to this is exhibit A ! So many great bands in that late 60s to mid 70s era would blow away the crap of today 😢
I've said the same thing and these morons respond with "music evolves" and they don't even know how stupid that sounds.
In full agreement!

There are so many heart warming comments here. Always remembered, the Great Greg Lake!
Total magic how this song being 67 brings me back to be 13 yrs old in Freeport, Long Island. So many unforgettable memories…❤ Classic!
A song of forgiveness and aceptance inner and outer, sitting alone on a pacific northwest coast sunset. "Whatever was done is done" like when the levee breaks "Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good". Because in the end the only forgiveness that matters is the forgiveness that you give and accept is to yourself.
First time I’ve heard this song and it touched my soul “from the beginning “❤🙏
Love ELP; all things ELP.
Love love this and them they were great back in the day. I still love to listen to their music! ❤❤❤
I hadn't heard this song in forever... Then I watched Escape From Danemoa. Thanks to Ben Stiller for reminding me of this incredible song.

Amazing Greg Lake, wrote this song, sang this song, played acoustic and electric lead and bass parts in this song. I saw ELP at Lyric Theater in Baltimore, Md; one of the best acoustical venues in America, they were awesome 👌
ELP was my first concert. I loved them, but I had no idea then how lucky I was 💕🩷 I certainly know now!

My very 1st concert was on February 7,1978 I saw ELP at Jadwin Gymnasium at Princeton University. I can see Emerson holding his keyboard and flames shooting out the end as he's playing! Brain Salad Surgery is my favorite and I think Tarkus would be my favorite song... If I had to choose one, that is ❤✌️
