Wow, we have some seriously passionate Walther fans.
Firstly, I definitely should have done more research on the toolset prior to release. That is on me.
However, for a "Gun specific" multitool only 2 of the 7 implements have anything to do with guns. The rest are generic in nature. Even if I give a pass to the quality on those items (which isn't great). The other implements are just thrown into it.
Where is the carbon scraper? Sight adjustment tool? And I'm sure there are many other gun specific tools that would have been better than a spare blade or the file that doesn't have any texture.
    Flame on!
    Cheers,
    Dominic

Walthers is primarily a maker of PISTOLS, so there's no sight adjustment tool or carbon scraper needed, in contrast to prior Leatherma, SOG and Gerber tools that are focused on the M16/M4 platform. As for the craptastic file, your criticism of that is dead on.

Or grabbing a spring leg to put it a post...this tool is designed well for gun maintenance. A small 2mm hex bit would be useful to add for some grips and a small punch to push pins through instead of a serradded edge would make it ideal.

By walther for walther pistols. I would have put a dedicated slide release key on there because walthers require a key to unlock the slide to take it off. My buddy had one that he got on the private sell market and it didnt have a key so i had to rig up one out of other things to turn the pivot in the frame to let the slide come off. I believe Ruger uses the same thing or type but their own key has to be used. I know the LC series does anyway.

I looked at the GMT 150 because I'm writing a book on MTs and other pocket tools, even telephoned with the responsible product manager (here in Germany). The file may not be the greatest, but particularly that "weird thing" you didn't understand is very helpful to push an pull springs in weapons. So, as a lot of others correctly stated before, it's a specialized tool. On the one hand it is just that. On the other hand, as you stated yourself, it has got a very interesting form factor for the pliers. As I have commented several times, in comparison to small pliers from Knipex (and also some other companies) EVERY MT pliers fail to help to cope with medium jobs. Even a LM Surge pliers will fail to move a nut of 1/2 or 3/4", or get a grip on something of 20mm or more in width/thickness - which is no problem for a Cobra 150. But a small pair could complement those nicely. The Nextool Sailor and also the SOG power pint are pretty OK in that regard, but on very heavy, clumsy frames. So if you want a size between a real pair of pliers and the Victorinox pliers on SAKs, this fits perfectly... plus all the specific stuff.

Dominic this has been mentioned by others but this is a Gun Maintenance Tool. Typically these have a few general tools, some ok others there to fill a slot with a few firearm specific tools especially those pertaining to the brand. Get the point you’re making however I doubt if Walther is trying to get into the full blown multi tool market. Full description below:
The Gun Maintenance Tool 150 is a featherweight champion when it comes to gun maintenance. It includes eleven practical tools that together weigh only 66 g for quick help on the shooting range or in the field. Tools: pliers, plain blade, serrated blade, screwdriver, diameter gauge, file (fine and coarse), ruler, cable cutter and spring hook, plus a bottle opener for when youve finished your work. The GMT 150 can be carried almost invisibly on your belt in its nylon pouch.

For a gun specific tool, it needs a small punch (1/16"), a medium punch (1/8"), a flat head, a Phillips head, a 1/4" drive, a micro "pry bar" made of something softer than steel (e.g. polymer, brass, etc.), and parallel pliers. If you are specific to a model (AR, shotgun, etc.), then you may want to add a front sight tool, choke wrench, or something along those lines. It doesn't need a knife blade at all. (How many people are there who carries guns and don't also have a pocketknife already on them?)

I don't EDC a firearm, so some of this stuff I don't care about. I'm not even that keen on a blade at all given that I'd still carry a knife. As a guitar tech and work on bikes there are many times very small hex drivers are needed and as many different metric and standard sizes from .050 " to 5mm and also string spacing and nut sizing from 42mm to 45 and other sizes from 2 1/4 to 54 mm. i actually would appreciate the guages and rulers. Kind of a pain to constantly have to have at hand or reach for calipers in either fractional or decimal inches or mm. If the scale could double as a depth guage that would be even better. Have seen some bike specufic MT and one for casual guitar players but nothing as extensive as this one for pistol owners.
This video points out a major for me problem with MT tools and reviews. The real quality in hardness and longevity of the incuded files whether diamond or otherwise never seems to be really tested ditto for some of the other tools. The scissor quality's are tested well and sometimes the knife blades and steels but rarely tbe main tool the pliers/ cutters. Where is the Rockwell hardness tests and such , german knife makers use to include the RH mark ON THE BLADE. The " it wont even file my nails" test I find totaly inadequate and is the sort of test that reminds me of US car reviewers basing a major time of their review to how many cup holders and interior gadgets the car " has" .
I seriously doubt if any of the MT have a great file as even Victorianox only incuded a nail file as they knew that a real file that thin at RH 62 would just snap with the slightest consumer style mis use. So how about at least a diamond dust file review of how it cuts/ lasts in knife steel. Presumably that would be the primary use in EDC and outdoor use, but I see nothing about this. As guitar fret filer in an ever increasing use of hard SS fret use amoung even Chinese makers this is a critical tool.

That toy is adorable. The fastener diameter gauge is hilarious. I don't even want a free one. Tiny tools are bad enough without being nearly useless.

Would be cool if they emptied one side and put in a driver with interchangeable bits. Then the other side could have a blade, scissors and potentially an awl. I think weight would take a minor hit by that’s fine.

Right. Gun owners doing maintenance on their guns never open boxes, and their tools never leave the vicinity of their weapons to do normal things MTs do. Never!

That tool is a very nice size.....a lot of potential. Can't wait to see you disassemble it...and put in better implements...Keep blade...ditch everything else. Be interersting to see if Leatherman or Victorinox tools will fit. Better saw, file....91 mm Victorinox scissors,....maybe the awl from Farmer Alox that goes on the side of frame...a bit driver with a double sided bit...straight and phillips.....
A tool this size / weight could be ideal...

Well, I (was) going to be (helpful) and point out that the tool configuration signifies that this is more of an armorer's or CCW EDC tool, but this has been clearly communicated over the vast (and often unnecessarily rude) comments section. What I (will) say is mistake or not, thanks for posting this. I was unaware of this tool and will be adding one to my bag. Leopold also makes a tool (similar) to this which I own and is great to have. It doesn't have pliers so the Walther is actually a step up! Cheers!

Back in the day I bought a leather man blast to have a lighter weight tool in my pocket for the summer for the days I wear shorts but was out doors. So I have it still but broke the flat head screw driver off. And I also now have a skelatool as well. So I’m curious to see what you make of it in the future. Also I’m really considering a Power painte as another option for summer because I do wear short a lot for half the year and my surge and super tool 300 are to heavy unless you use a belt. Lol

I have not seen a multitool that is worth carrying. The closest I've seen is the ones made with tool change out as a feature, but those usually cost enough for me to find better ways to spend that money, with Knipex being one of those things I feel is a better use of my money.

With a better set of tools the Walther would be a famtastic lightweight option for summer carry. If I am not carrying a Wave, Free Series, or Surge a modified SOG Powerpint is the small tool of choice. I find it to ne the smallest tool that "works".

  • @snosov

With current toolset it's kind of useless for non-gun person. I feel like the only possible way is to though away all implements and try to squeeze bit exchanger to one handle and scissors + leatherman combo bottle/can opener and wire stripper + #11 blade exchanger all together to second handle.
