    This is good work Bob. How much clearance do you have for unscrewing the oil filter? Looks tight. I have my kit on the way and do not like the fact that sew removes the oil cooler and installs a cheesy chunk of aluminum to adapt perpendicular angle to fit. I ordered the original kit and want to make it work

    • @BobWilson84

      I had plenty of room for the filter. If the engine was lower it would probably be questionable.

    I’m years late but I’m curious what you use the tractor for as you said in the video you were not using a mower deck and I note your fan or mount for it makes the 3-point impossible.
    I’d seriously consider this for my 420 but I would need a different radiator/fan solution as I couldn’t imagine not having a 3-point on these machines.
    I like the smoothness of the vanguard but darn I love the Onan sound enough that the sound alone may keep me using Onan engines.

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84  10 місяців тому

      It was built just to tow stuff around with the simple hit hitch, or blow snow. The guy who bought it mows with it and has a snow blower. The 3 pt attachments for these tractors are sorta too clumsy for my liking. What 3 point attachment do you use on the 420?

    • @kennethwestervelt2843
      @kennethwestervelt2843 10 місяців тому

      @@BobWilson84 my 420 is a restoration project but the 3-point lives on my 316 Onan for now. I have a 3-point receiver adapter that also holds 6 suitecase weights. It gets used to move trailers or with a modest hitch/plate setup as a tow tractor to more other machines. I’ve also got a 3-point yo sleeve hitch conversion and it covers my sleeve hitch plow, disc, harrow, etc. lastly I have a set of 3-point pallet forks as the rear 3-point can lift about 800 pounds making it quite handy.
      I have a mower deck for that 316 but I use the 3-point do much that I mow with an older 214 just to keep the 316 as a dedicated work mule.

  • @robj2704
    @robj2704 5 років тому

    Some charging systems are not strong enough to run anything but the electric pto (blades) and headlights without running the battery down after some time. If you ever go with a deck, you could experience this since you also have an electric cooling fan. If the fan is more than one speed, you could run it at a lower speed. And, LED bulbs on the headlights would draw much less current, as well. I suppose you could run it around for awhile with the PTO engaged to see if it's going to be an issue.
    Moving air around the transaxle from your cooling fan is a nice side benefit to have.
    You've done a nice job.

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84  5 років тому +1

      Hey Rob, great point about the amperage draw. Thankfully the alternator (stator) on the Briggs can put out around 20 amps continuous. I actually installed a deck and ran it for about 1 hour with no voltage drop on the battery so it seems like the fan + pto + headlight combo isn't too much. Thanks!

    Hi Bob, I love your 318. I've just upgraded mine to the same engine as yours. I'm having a bit of problems with throttle and choke cables, did you use the original ones or are they new, if so where did you get from? THX!

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84  5 років тому

      Hi Henry. I used generic cables. The throttle and choke can both be mounted in 2 orientations. If you study the linkage, make sure the high throttle position of the cable means you are pulling the gov. spring tighter. The choke is “on” when the lever is back towards the rear of the tractor. Hope that helps.

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84  5 років тому

      I don't know what Deere was thinking... It's a ugly design in my opinion. I guess with the new bushings and gasket maker it should last another 10-15 years. Ethanol in the new fuel probably makes things worse too. Thankfully there's a gas station with ethanol-free nearby. Have a good one - excellent username sir.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60 4 роки тому

      My guess is having the fuel lines coming out the bottom of the tank would interfere with a rear PTO shaft if you had one on the tractor. It would be risky trying to route both fuel lines away from the rear PTO shaft.

      If you're talking about the difference in height between the engine and transmission input shaft, that's normal. These driveshafts are designed to operate at a slight angle. The crankshaft end of the driveshaft on a stock Onan-powered 318 also sits up a little bit higher.

    • @cyberia55
      @cyberia55 4 роки тому +1

      MichaelTJD60 If you remove the driveshaft from the machine, the two ends (the yokes) should be aligned with each other, not rotated at different angles from one another. ua-cam.com/video/uRkYhI1afHk/v-deo.html

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84  4 роки тому

      Yep, Honda’s a better engine. It was also another $1000 to spend on a tractor that is worth $3,000 (or less) it comes down to dollars and cents. Is there something specific to the Briggs that makes it a lesser engine? The new owner of this tractor uses it for fun, and it would probably take 20 years to get to 1,000 hours. The likelihood of ever wearing out the Briggs is pretty slim. Please, let me know what to look for in the Vangards... in your experience what is the weak link? Overall build quality? A specific component?

    I'll first say that this is one of the best rebuilds I've seen. You have a major fault in your PTO set up, without a key for the out put shaft, it will slip and destroy your crank.

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84  5 років тому +3
