Thank you very much. : )
Yep.
Dave Simpson no need for a thanks:) you really are
Some xenomorph jimi hendrix : am I a joke to you?
We're a curious bunch. Particularly us Strat lovers. 'We' discovered way back that if you wedge a matchstick or whatever in between the 3 way switch then it would sound awesome. So Fender duly obliged and made the 5 way as standard. But people are now often wanting 3 ways for that "true vintage" experience. Nitro wore away and gave us the once "ugh I'm not playing THAT battered heap o' junk" recoils of disgust. So Fender duly obliged by offering the hard wearing Poly finishes that is hard as nails and lasts forever. But, oh no, some of us don't want that. No, we want to go back to Nitro so it wears away easily. Or if we're 'forced' to have Poly then do our best to "bash it up" as Mr Simpson is so eloquently demonstrating here. Or we simply shell out many thousands of pounds or dollars or whatever currency you slave away to earn and let a Custom Shop Master Builder make us a wrecked one at more money than if we order the exact same guitar with the exact same pick ups, fretboard, hardware etc... and end up getting a brand spanking new one. Yes. A brand new pristine one. For less money than a battered up "old" one!
Yep. We're a curious bunch.
That we are. Theres nothing more odd than human beings. : )
sorry ding dong poly finish came on scene due to cost and finish time......had nothing to do with what people wanted.... lacquer takes tons of time comparitely also EPA filtering air and other issues brought about poly...came from industry outside of guitar world.. fender was looking for cheap fast finish and other cost and time saving measures
@@thedavesimpson there’s nothing more odd than a musician.
I have to admit, as much as i love a new guitar, i pamper it too much. When i play on a relic, tho, i feel like i can 'have my way with it more', thrash it about, drag it downstairs and sling it in the backseat without thinking about treating it tenderly: it becomes a tool to be used to play with and experiment with. Crazy? Yeah. But a relic(ed) guitar just feels more like a comfy pair of jeans, and I just want to play the strings off it.
You really summed it up
That intro man 😮 Absolutely love it!! Very pink floyd-ish. Great playing as always my friend!
Even the bum note
Nice “Maggot Brain”-style intro. It was so nice, I forgot all about relic guitars.
Thank you very much. : )
I love relic jobs and I love guitars naturally getting beat to shit. I dig both.
I love love LOVE the part about not putting seeds of doubt in someone's mind once they've reliced their guitar.
It really is actually not on. That.
Nice one man :)
It's now crying out for a nice set of aged pickup covers and knobs! (Or you could try soaking them in tea ... )
steveteb oddly enough, some of the new plastics resist that. I had a set of covers and knobs I soaked in coffee grounds with a bit of water for like three weeks and the knobs came out a really good cream color, but the covers were still stark white🤦♂️
@@zerohourdrift I work with leather and just for shits and giggles I tried tan leather dye (water based too) on my strat, works a treat! Apply leave for a minute then wipe. If you want it darker reapply and wipe again. Keep doing it till you get the colour you want. Works on scratch plates too to make it look dirty and worn. Use with 0000 steel wool for best wear results.
Coffee+curry powder. Works every time. Go heavy on the curry lol
Dude… this was insanely helpful, it’s giving me the confidence to try this on my G&L Legacy. Thanks sooo much!!
we need more people like you. your perspective is fair and proper which we dont see much anymore
Would never relic one of my top end guitars but have recently aged a cheaper Tele style guitar. Loved the style and playability but it was all wrong in the attempted factory antique finish. 1200 grit sandpaper and a joiners pencil had the gloss down to a Matt Finnish where it counted and the lead added the discolouration to the neck, fingerboard and wear points on the body. Tip is to use a sharp blade to scrape the lead and create a dust coating over the area to be worked. This gives a nice even coat and prevents the pencil lines. Strangely a very satisfying process for me but appreciate it’s not for everyone.. 👍🇦🇺🐨
I have two guitars, a shiny new looking Poly finish American Special Tele and a closet classic semi-relic’d MIJ Strat. For some reason, I play the Strat more and have a more organic and soulful approach musically. Being inspired visually is one thing, but the feel of a “used” guitar, vintage or relic’d, is special to me. We obviously can’t all afford vintage Strats.
Thank you Dave, your magical and technical talents makes me happy and answer my questions!
You are a Master!
Thank you very much. : )
Right on, Dave... freedom of artistic expression! You bought it, you paid her Majesty's tax, you own it, you do it! Looks and sounds fabulous- the Harley Benton, if not mistaken.
This video came at the perfect time! I just got a Harley Benton strat for the express purpose of trying to relic it. I'm glad to see that it can be done, and on pretty much the same model, to boot. I'm really looking forward to the video on the fretboard wear.
Thank you very much for watching and good luck with your relic. : )
i came for a relic, but got a beautiful ambient dream moment
I was going to message you on facebook about this 😂 now I'll watch the video
A bit of steve rothery in the intro. I like it how you get vintage bluesy tones with a hint of 80's in there. You Sir are a player.
Thank you very much. : )
Was it just me or did anyone else forget that they clicked to learn how to relic a poly finish? Haha
Beautiful playing as always Dave. Keep up the fantastic work ❤
My Great Grandpa used to have a bunch of Gibsons, Fenders, etc. Acoustics, Electrics, Banjos. He would route sections out of them and install gemstones that he thought looked good. My Dad would get pissed and ask him why he's ruining his guitars. Great Grandpa said "It's mine. If I want to take it outside and drag it around the driveway, I'll do that." I never got to meet him, but that story carried over to me through my Dad and I use that example as my baseline for how I modify and interact with all of my possessions. Screw anyone who has a problem with it. Buy your own and keep it locked up without any dings on it.
The old photos of him with all of his guitars makes me drool. I only ended up with an original 1960 DuoSonic which I'll never complain about. Some guy came by after he died and scammed my Great Grandma out of his guitars. She had no idea they were worth significantly more than she sold them for, even with his 'modifications.' They got some even older civil war muskets off of her too.
is there a way to tell the "Can relic Poly" and "Don't waste Time Type Poly" ??
Thickness or luck of the draw
Any guitar made after 2003.
I've got a factory relic in a Vintage VS6 (SG) reissue. Not a bad job, not too over the top on the body. The tuners are rusty looking and pick up covers are slightly pitted. But by god it's the best guitar I've ever played. Such a nice neck. And the pick ups sound awesome too.
Came here to figure out how to mess up my brand new Mexican Strat but ended up getting so much more. The first 15min of this video was absolutely beautiful brotha thanks for that addition!
Earlier I used to "dislike" the electric guitars with relicing... recently I find myself wanting to own one. Interesting how things change.
Absolutely loved your disclaimer to all the relic haters out there. Honestly couldn't agree more!
Hi Dave, you did a great job with this guitar. *There are some great tips in your video*. To relic or not to relic - it's up to the individual. Personally, I feel most people take off too much paint from arm wear against the body - which makes the relic job look fake. Sometimes "less is more". Peace everyone 🙏
your videos are double value one we get to hear you play then we get to talk about cool stuff dude I talk about you all the time over here in America you're one of my favorite UA-camrs...
Well said, and yes, online courtesy is important. It’s a reflection of civility.
I love your playing, this makes me feel as good as listening to the division bell!
Whoooo calm down there son! That intro has such an amazing tone! Of course, great playing too but the tone! Wow, just wow!
Thank you very much. : )
I don't like relicing, but I watch these for a learning experience. It's starting to change my opinion on the whole subject.
i believe its each to their own,,,,,,,however why not just play the guitar and let it gracefully age through your playing,,,,,,,, as long as everyones happy it doesnt really matter, god bless guitars man :)
@@feiz01 because guitars finished with poly urethene will NOT relic naturally. Nitro wore down naturally, but you can play a poly finished guitar for 80 years and it could still look fresh
Great Intro Dave! It's your guitar and you can do whatever you like to it,congrates on 46k,Cheers.
Thank you very much. : )
The Mexican roa d worn guitars look more authentic than custom shop to me
Crikey Dave that intro! I came to hear about relicing a dodgy old tele that I picked up. I haven’t got to that part yet and just totally inspired by your playing (again). Top job
Can you be more clear, should anti relicer's watch or not I dont think you were clear enough 😅
Excellent playing, LOVE the effects. At one point I thought of Porcupine Tree, and that's a compliment. Nice work, man.
Damn it Dave , everytime i watch and listen to you play I'm just totally blown away , love it
Thank you very much. : )
Holy lord, that intro music is siiiiiiick!!!! 😭 I would buy an album of that right now!
Dave, lovely playing at the start, you are truly gifted. I'll comment later on the relicing, no problem with it, done it a few times.
Thank you very much. : )
In some parallel universe where Dave never picked up a guitar he’s watching this video yelling at the guy ruining perfectly good guitar’s
That would mean that youtube would be watchable through that portal that connects our worlds lol. Mind blowing.
I have a modern player strat with a poly finish in silverburst that I just used to smash about and then when it had a fair few chips in it I sanded it down like never before so now you can see the black fading through to the silver and then the wood, it's not amazing and I can see why some people don't bother trying to relic poly guitars, but I love it to pieces. Cheers for this dave been looking for a guide that doesn't disregard poly guitars for a while now xo
Thank you very much. : )
Epic performance! I saw little ballerina dancers holding torches at night on the summer solstice. That doesn’t just happen
in all truth your my favourite guitarist you make your guitars sing in the right places fantastic you have a rare skill
Thank you very much. : )
Thanks soo much dave, I’ve been waiting for a good video on this topic for ages!
Thank you. : )
Dave you're the man!
I´m not into relicking myself although I like the finger wear on my Tele fretboard but each to their own. The pattern on the back of yours reminds me of a Tudor sailing ship, cool!
Same really, I like it the natural way where the finish gets worn down or dinged naturally.
I know it’s an old video but I have pristine and relic guitars. I love relic or even my old ones with normal dings as you aren’t as precious with them. You just pick them up and don’t care 🙂 each has its place.
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing your personal technique, very generous. This is helping me a ton with my current project. Cheers from LA :)
Well said on the relicing. The anti-relic mob need to get outside a bit more!
Music intro is so great
Brilliant intro, Dave. Your fingers are touched by the guitar gods.
Thank you very much. : )
Hell yeah awesome job
YES!! Waiting for more relic vids for so long!! THANKS DAVE!
Thank you. : )
Did anyone do it? And how did it turn out?
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it: wood, grain filler/sanding sealer, paint (colour), poly clear coat.
Why would they clear coat the wood before they paint it? Sanding sealer would make sense to get an even paint finish.
Hi Dave, great vid, am about to relic a Sunburst P Bass copy in poly👍👍👍
Newly subscribed to your channel, great videos, funny and informative... Oh and you're guitar playing is incredible, from the heart.. Keep it up dude!!! ✌️
I love relic'ed guitars and always wanted my Tokai Goldstar sunburst relic'ed. So today I've used my 1994 Korean Squier strat as a test. JESUS CHRIST!!!!!! The layers upon layers of shit on this thing, it's a great guitar and it's obviously laminate body with a thick layer of what looks like resin over it then layers of paint.
I've got it looking pretty cool now but damn was it hard work.
So guys, is it resin on top of the wood?
You can't see the wood through it so is it clear coat??
Tried to repaint my OG Yammy Pacifica a few decades black, found the same thing. Heavy, almost plastic layer of paint, about 1/16” or more thick. Almost like an epoxy paint was used. No stripper would even dent it, and I tried them all. Ultimately resorted to rough-sanding and priming prior to spraying.
@@JS-rp7qb mate, I had to chip at this resin shit with a chisel to slowly get it off.
I've noticed on my 2003 squire Strat Affinity Series sunburst made in China it has some plectrum wear
Ian Paice: "I bought it, I can bloody well boot it", if I recall correctly.
Thank you. : )
love you dave
best guitar freak on youtube!!! like you
Jo is gonna go mental when she comes in and sees what you've done to your new guitar! And her clean sheets!!
That intro was insane !!!!
Wait until you get to my age Dave and you won't want your guitars to look as battered and crusty as I do now ! :-). Fabulous playing on the intro - I would not give a fig what a guitar looked like if I could make it sing like that.
John North nah beat guitars are always better than new ones. It shows their character and honesty worn in guitars feel better to play as well
Thank you very much. : )
Nice mate! Gonna try this
Dave Dave Dave. From one Dave to another, your minor rant about anti relic-ers and the philosophy around opinion. Fucking love you for this man. I don’t like people buying custom shop and sticking them in hermetically sealed anti uv cabinets - but each to their own.
Thank you. : )
Dude is so right about people getting so triggered by relic guitars. Thanks for saying that man…I’m not even like a relic fanatic but I’m an artist and it blows ny mind to see how afraid of anything new these guitar
Players are.
great playing man, nice song
Thank you very much. :)
21:46 A centimeter thick? Do you mean millimeter ;) ?
I hope so lol. Otherwise the wood would be incredibly thin. Like 1cm.
I thought he meant inch.
I did mean millimetre yeps. :)
Disclaimer was very well-said! Some people like peas, some like carrots. Different preferences don't make any person better than another, and a person who needs to validate what they like by criticizing others' preferences is not cool.
Great job on this HB relic!!! I think it looks waaay better now than when you first got it, but that's just my opinion :)
Thank you very much. : )
another stunning intro and on the HB ...just great
Thank you very much. : )
Watching your intro's " For free " just has to come crashing down sooner or later. But, until that happens. It's fantastic Dave...
Thank you very much. : )
Amazing technique and definitely looks much better than trying to go down to the wood! I think poly relicing can look pretty decent as long as it's fairly light. I wouldn't try going for an SRV relic with poly since the wood would just look too clean. But something like John's fiesta red strat would be definitely doable.
I wonder if you could mimic checking by using a razorblade and actually drawing out the cracks yourself on the guitar like how gibson does it. Add some brown shoepolish and that might be a really decent poly relic job.
That guitar looks and sounds fantastic. Sweet playing too!
Thank you very much. : )
Thanks Dave. Loads of memorable chsracter :) UK swag next level.
I have a nitro Fender highway one telecaster. That's also a clear poly finish under the nitro laquer, it does age nicely but its shiney underneath. And this has been lots in the past, Then it was called fullerplast which is basically PU, so...
The Highway Ones relic naturally right?
That’s how the fenders were done back in the 60s, they had a poly undercoat.
@@Datttsnake Yes from my understanding they are not relict.
Your playing in the beginning of this video is stunning.
Awesome Video Dave! Thank You! Would it be possible to rub some wood stain onto the clear coat?
It is possible yep.
@@thedavesimpson alright thank you for your answer:)
Just smear the required parts with carrot juice and let Len have a go at it. Rabbit's teeth beat X-acto knife any day..😉😏
Hahahaha. :)
Why do people like to relic Fenders more than Gibsons? Do Fenders just look better relic'd than Gibsons?
Yeps.
very well said and 12,000,000,000,000etc etc% agree with your "disclaimer" and that applies to eeeevverryyything on the internet. people need to just shut up and live their own lives!
Yes everyone needs to shut up. Who values free speech anyway 🤔
Awesome playing in the intro, and great info on relicing. BTW the first time you came into shot with those goggles ...Dave, that's my YT moment of the year.....classic :)
Thank you very much. : )
I have a Yamaha Pacifica and I had it for 26 years now and it was my first electric guitar so it got abused. Like really abused, because I didn't care and I in general don't treat the things I work lightly. So it would be a great example for a guitar that could show some sort of "relic".
BUT: The only signs of wear are the ones nobody really likes.
- scratches
- dents
- lots of fret wear
- corrosion on all the metal parts like tuners and bridge
- corrosion built up on the magnet poles of the pickups
- all screws are corroded to black
- dents on the back of the neck
The only things that aged "nicely" are some discoloration of the neck from the thumb and a yellowing of the white pick guard (but also it's very slight).
SO:
What did I do wrong? How would you ever get the relic look just by natural wear? To me it seems impossible. You would have to play that guitar for 100.000 hours and have it refretted like 20 times and you would need to replace all the screws regularly and what not.
i love guitars that look like theyve had a life...even to getting pristine cheapies and making ratocasters from them...a guitar that plays and sounds great...but with a look that no one would pinch it at a gig...nice shiny riccy330...turn your back and it may be gone when you turn round...my two are rebuilt hodson surfcats.(both seafoam green with mint guards and 3 strat like pups when new)..one stripped...danish oil finished on bare wood...then thin black coat on top...gold hs filtertrons in it... ..it will age nicely...the other has black sides and back...buffed well to look worn..front mahogany stained ...hb p90s in it...both with black pickguards...they look OLD...22 cartrides as switch tips...black with filtertrons has 22 cartridge as trem arm tip too...absolutely nothing wrong with making your gear your own...i have my nice highend stuff...but my ratocasters sound better..play better...and they are unique
Beautiful work
Dave I am a huge fan my man. Anyhow. Might I make a friendly suggestion. I want to see you in a Brian Johnson hat (AC/DC). It would be a cool new image shift 4 you since you are becoming so popular so do you need to evolve your persona buddy. Your gonna be a star. Wait you already are.
I tired to get the poly finish off the paint came off too and it chipped any tips to get the paint back (sunburst) greetings from the touring bus
Nice to hear that. Looks like the sound from the space... Something in the save vibe of "23 Go In To End" of John.
Thank you very much. : )
great video thanks, ive got a vintage v6 laguna blue that im thinking about relicing!
Thank you very much. : )
Loved the Intro!
Now i got you!
You are guilty already of getting top notch musical sounds out of ... errrr ... everything !
New evidence: guilty of producing optical delights too!
I rest my case.
Great Intro! Your style of soloing reminds me strongly of Chris Oliva from Savatage. Very inspiring and captivating!
I've always thought of refinishing in nitro & let it relic naturally!
If you have 30 years to spare, go
for it.
@@gingataff if you know anything about nitro finishes or payed any attention to the video you'd know better!
How long does it take for nitro to wear off?
@@TheNastyPS depends on how much you play but wears pretty easily!
Frank Castle Unless you left the nitro guitar in the sun, or in the cold regularly, it could take 10 years before some minor scrapping.
43:44 Scuba Dave!😆
Great playing man! You and me are on the same Gilmourish/Bucketheadish page when it comes to playing. Great job. I’d happily pay for a full album made up of music like your intro.
What song was that and what album is it on?
I'm pretty sure his stuff is just him jamming
I tend not to relic new guitars,or used ones in nice condition. I always think i'll regret doing it. Used ones that already have some damage/wear..then i often will depending on its' condition.
I didn't like reliced guitars in the past but I learnt to love reliced guitars.
Good Man!!!!!
Ive been waiting so long! Im so excited.
Thank you. : )
