Glad to find your video. I’m doing the same thing with a cheap Guitarfetish Tele body. I even chambered it. I am now in the middle of the second color because I’m going to do a color over burst relic. Thanks for sharing.
For future reference, if you use a plastic scraper you wont carve up the body so much when removing the paint. Also doing a very light dusting coat for your very first color coat will also help the paint stick better. Looking good!
Good move to put the pick guard back on. I've seen someone do the relic without the pick guard and then once the pick guard was put back on it looked crap.
Cool video. I actually built this kit. I was pretty happy. I cut the headstock myself. Kept the kit bog standard so far. Painted it in powder blue nitro and that turned out ok also. I’m pretty sure it came with P90s or something like that. It sounds and plays great.
This is awesome. And the production quality and commentary are all top notch. Tempted to try this at some point. Am I crazy or did the actual paint job not take too long? I feel like I’d seen videos before where people took weeks to cure the finish etc but I don’t know why that’s necessary. This look awesome.
You relic a guitar by playing the shit out of it! You wear it in as you pay your dues man! My 25 year old strat shows its age but all the wear was my forearm and fingers!🎸
I have a 2004 50th anniversary Strat and I've played the $hit out of it. It's had one refret and a few dings, but it has not worn like a vintage guitar. I was anti-relic until I played a Mexican Road Worn Tele and feel in love. Try one and you may find the reason so many players are see the benefits of a relic'ed guitar.
Nice vid! In total how many days did it take you refin from the wood itself to the fully refinished product? Also after 1 year now, how did the paint hold up?
Ha ha click bait it’s shows green and it is not green 😮 lol Just kidding Jackson you did a great job spraying it outside, so luckily no flies landed on it. T cut is awesome ehh, use it on anything that stuff. Also that wadding works too I can’t remember what it’s called, oh yeh, brasso!! Proper English stuffs. Anyhow love from a Brit Toronto. BTW.. So sad about Mike ehh, he was an inspiration for sure 😢
I see that you didn't clear coat. Is it not necersary? Im planning to do exactly this to my strat but I can't find anyone who talks about whether or not to clear coat at the end. Im thinking that an aged 'relic' would of worn through most of the factory clear coat anyway. Might help to make the paint fade better. Cheers
Lol dude.. you would have saved a whole lot of time had you used a putty knife or something to remove the paint. That had to have been tedious! Turned out great though
The reason for using nitrocellulose is that it is supposed to be more porous to "let the wood breathe". Then you put a waxy polish on there? Seems counterintuitive, but perhaps it doesn't matter in the long run.
FYI every nitro guitar gets waxed in fact he skipped the clear coat and did more of French polish technique remember it composite body glued together with God only knows what
I hate this process. I have a 1997 American Standard Strat Deluxe, bought new. Gigged for almost 26 years with it and it looks mint. Because I care about it.
Absolutely wear a respirator when using a heat gun and these highly toxic finishes. There are zero health and safety standards in China & Indonesia, and you could be breathing anything. Having been doing this for a while; If it's already finished, just lightly sand and refinish over the top with nitrocellulose.(Nitro can be applied over polyurethane, but not vice versa.)Fender actually did just this on custom orders, frequently using burst bases as they required better quality wood.On many real relics, you can see the original finish color . If you want to start from scratch, just buy a unfinished body ,- they are inexpensive.Use all nitro products following manufacturers guidelines. Always,- ALWAYS, - protect your breathing.Sanding, spraying , - all of it.Spray in the right temps outside, or in open spaces like porches or garages. All of these products are terrible for your lungs. The nitro naturally relics and ages, and lends itself to all kinds of techniques.I particularly like freezing/heating, to cause finish cracking.( This doesn't work on poly). Successful relicing is all about building up repeated stages,- add, take away, add, take, etc. - slowly incorporating, blending the damage. If you find yourself rushing, - stop and check your head. The result will be only as good as the patience and effort put in.
Heat gun is pure danger. Chemical stipper is USELESS. Use a ultra sharp knife that has a thick, blade. Set the knife on the surface & pull it toward yourself. The paint comes off easy, dry & leaves no scratches, no burns. Sand the body now to make it perfect and proceed.
I’ve used heat guns on several fenders to strip thick poly. The trick is to slowly heat up a big area while keeping the heat gun in motion. Doing this is very straightforward. Just take your time and make sure you do it outside and I’d still use a mask when you do.
Bloody great job. The relicing looks really good 🔥
No better feeling than just getting stuck in and then reaping the rewards. It's look fab, well done!
Thanks man! First time I’ve had a big guitar project for a long time and boy it feels good
Looks so good man!!

ooooh the pink turned out great! also i love the video editing - very therapeutic.
Thanks! Appreciate that
Coming from someone who has had the unfortunate experience of driving across Nebraska, your shirt is hilarious.
Good work! I’ve been wanting to do something like this myself, but a bit intimidated. Thanks for showing me that this is very doable!
If I can do it, anyone can!

Very cool!
Planning to do this to a Squier this summer-perfect timing.
It’s so much fun! Great way to spend the weekend

Thanks man! Very kind of you. The actual spraying didn’t take longer than an afternoon
12:22 Bro? 🤨
Lmao but great video, huge help starting my first partcaster thank u
I really like the purple bench!
Filling the grain would have been a good idea, then using heat and cold to give it a more authentic checking would have helped loads too.
But he didnt do a clear coat right? Only then you get the checking?

Doesn’t work like that bud. New poly paint doesn’t come off.

Think it turned out great. Shell Pink and Mint Green is tough to beat.
Cheers mate! It’s a great combo
Nice vid! In total how many days did it take you refin from the wood itself to the fully refinished product? Also after 1 year now, how did the paint hold up?
Probably 2-3 days of work. The finish still looks great and glossy
Maybe try a paint scraper next time 🧐😂 otherwise it looks great!
I know man! Funnily enough I bought one yesterday… just about 2 weeks too late
very nice mate !!!
Thanks dude!
From your experience, do you think you could have stained and varnished that body rather than painted it ?
Does Harley Benton not offer this model in shell pink?
Yep
I like relic shell pink good job 👍
I think it turned out great!
When I looked at you, I imagined Pink & a manbun. I was half right
Ha ha click bait it’s shows green and it is not green 😮 lol

A bit late here. Yes clear coat. Check out brad angrove's channel about going guitar finishes with spray cans.
Nice video!
Cheers mate!
Nice Video, doesnt Harley benton do a plain wood body to finish yourself, so you can save the hassle of removing paint
Yep and that would be a great option! I wanted to show it could be done with any old guitar though
@@JacksonBrooksby good idea , I have an old squier around maybe I´ll do the same thing :)
Great job ! You do know they also sell unfinished kits of finished guitars they sell lol could have saved you some time :)
That's true!
This is the way.
This is the way
Um, no, it really isn't...
@@mattrogers1946😂
pretty decent job
Cheers! I’ll take that
Please, save some bucks and leave the spatula in store.
Man, don't quite your day job. For real though!
Lol dude.. you would have saved a whole lot of time had you used a putty knife or something to remove the paint. That had to have been tedious! Turned out great though
Hahah I know I didn’t have the best tools 😂 thanks man!
You are fricken happy with that outcome??????????????? Unbelievable!!!! another Wow!

So you clicked on a video purely to diss on it? Jeez, get a life….
Maybe it's me, I don't get the relicing of new guitars. Just play the dang thing and the relicing will come later.
Not if the guitar is finished in Poly. Only older nitro finished guitars get that cool worn look.

Loved the red guitar! For pink? Some chick will really love it I guess, but only because she didn't see it red. Wow!
It's a colour mate, same as all the others.
Clicked off after watching you remove the paint with a screwdriver. Should be a tutorial for what not to do...🙄
A screwdriver? Bye.
Gibson Murphy lab uses car keys…..

Pulling a knife towards yourself huh

Or just buy DIY kit from HB and go from there
