I love the old shows where we could analyze our world through a lens that does not diminish us as a people, but gives us insight into our faults. We gain nothing through self hate except the desire to spread hate. Star Trek was a perfect vehicle for this. It is not a reflection of us currently, but a view into what we can be. Thank you for your thoughts on this.

When I saw this episode in the early 1980s I thought it was a bit over the top, much like the episode "The Omega Glory" where they talk about a never-ending war between the Kohms and the Yangs where they had the U.S. Constitution and flag centuries or millennia before the United States was founded.

I'd agree that it now has something to say about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict 5:17 as both parties have been discovered to be related as Semitic peoples, and both are consumed with hatred, or at least their leaders and extremists who run things. I think Kirk's comment is relevant: "Our minds will not be twisted, not by Lokai, nor by you." As is Spock's: "To expect sense from two mentalities of such extreme viewpoints is not logical."
Perhaps there were extremists on both sides filled with hatred during the Civil Rights movement, but both political parties came together around 1964-5 to pass the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Even if today one side is so angry, fearful and racist that they want to end the teaching of Black History, and another side is angry about injustice by the police and the courts, that doesn't mean both sides today are filled with hatred and murder in their hearts as represented by the two parties in this episode.
Decades ago the Catholic-Protestant conflict in North Ireland was a problem with violence and hatred but seems to have been resolved.

Apparently, this incredibly subtle episode was back before Star Trek went woke.

In Doctor Who this kind of subject, the cost of war, has also been explored. Both in the 50th anniversary special and the follow up two parter. The 13th Doctor's speach at the climax of the second part is especially good. I wont go further in explaining, spoilers. 😊

It certainly doesn't look that way.

And I would say that our political and media classes seem to be the drivers of much of it. Thank you for checking out my video sir.

I recall a scene in one of the later Star Trek series in which a member of one of these races (I don't remember which) was standing on the bridge of a starship. We know that they had starship capacity, so hopefully they found a way to put aside their differences, at least on some of their colonies.

A bit difficult since there was only 2 left and they were obsessed with revenge and beamed down to the wrecked planet to continue the conflict to the very last man. We as an audience were left at the end of the episode with the assumption that the species was then destined to become extinct through mutual destruction. This is what happens when hard hearts and heads clash. Caught in the horns of each others hate, no escape and all those around and in between suffer in the fall out.
