The Motion Picture was my first piece of Star Trek. The white-sleeved longer cut (with the unfinished VFX) at the ripe age of 4 years old. And I was in love. As much as Kirk loved The Enterprise, I loved The Enterprise. TMP inspired one of my earliest nightmares in the form of drifting towards the V'ger cloud. The first six movies, and the original series, are my favorite of all Star Trek. TNG and Deep Space Nine are neck and neck for second place depending on my mood and what episode we're talking about, but, those six movies, with Star Trek 3 being my personal favorite out of the lot... I don't think Star Trek will ever be that good again. You can't replace having 10-20 year actors playing characters, with that veteran, seasoned, level of experience. Shatner was so comfortable with himself as Kirk in the movies, and everyone else plays their roles so effortlessly. Like a second skin. It's funny, because that was one of the biggest reasons I was not a fan of the JJ films at all. I just couldn't buy any, even Karl Urban as much as I love him, as those characters. The OG crew are so cemented into those characters, and indeed they made them what they are, that I can't ever accept a substitute. When Bill Shatner goes, it will be like a father died, for me. His Kirk helped raise me, and teach me, as a child. On the topic of Kirk's pushing for the warp engines to be engaged so soon, the interesting thing about TMP as a whole is that it's about healing. Kirk's, never-say-die attitude is one of his traits. He'll be the first man to step into a dangerus situation and face it head on. In TMP that ambitious and brave attitude has mutated into this desperation to prove that he can still be in command. He's basically having a mid-life crisis at the start. And yet, his usual Kirkness shines through when he realizes that Decker had protected the ship and crew where he had endangered it, and he repeatedly accepts Decker's hip checking throughout the story, until by the end he has refound his balance. (Also, having his friends at his side once again to council him like angels on the shoulders.) On the topic of aesthetics, I love the movie era so much. Not just the Big E, but all the space stations, the interiors, the props. The Klingon ships. Even the radical stuff like Excelsior and Grissom still fits beautifully into the visual lexicon of this era from 2270 to 2295. It's a world ripe to explore. I'm also a sucker for that era of film making and what future history looked like. Blade Runner, Alien, Terminator. All of these films speak with similar voices to the TOS Trek movies. I wish that the Trek movie era had gotten the Alien Isolation treatment. By that I mean, a modern developed PC game that focused on authentically recreating those sets, environments, props, and telling a story in that era of Star Trek. With gameplay mechanics inspired by something like KOTOR or Mass Effect, with a focus on adventure, character, etc. I think that would be amazing. Likely, it will never happen. It has seemed since the 90s that particular era of Trek has been forgotten.

I had the pleasure of reading Our Kind of People after checking it out from my local library and it is truly a fascinating book. I did not grow up upper class, but I grew up middle class. My life began in a three-story house in the suburbs of Atlanta, raised by my wonderful mother who is a disabled veteran and her adoptive parents were longtime prominent educators. Grandma and Granddad attended HBCUs, obtained masters degrees, and were members of Delta Sigma Theta and Omega Psi Phi respectively. Mom was always raised in the suburbs and so was I. Grandma wanted Mom to be a debutante, but she immediately refused. Granddad didn't have a vacation home, but he did have a timeshare. Grandma traveled frequently to the Caribbean and Europe.

He killed him self (committed suicide) in both series. He’s a good actor but it would be better if he takes roles where he is not killing himself. 😢😢😢😢😢😢 The writers of the Acolyte could have written in the storyline that he fought Mae and then died like Master Indara. I didn’t give it much of a chance, I’ll be honest. I wondered if this was going to be “The Wonder Years” or the “Racism Years”. I was one minute in and racism was mentioned, so I shut it off. Racism is a heavy topic and I didn’t want to do heavy. Maybe especially because I’m white and this was going to be a show about how whites treated blacks like dirt in 60s Alabama, which is true. But it’s not something I want to watch for fun. Cosby Show, Family Matter’s, Fresh Prince, all shows from my childhood that I loved. They had deep moments and touched on Racism here and there and it was profound when they did. But mostly they were fun. This show might have been as well, I don’t know, because it lost me in the first minute (I should have watched more really). I think Cheadle made a strategic error here. Obviously you can’t have a show set in 1960s Alabama and not bring up racism. But maybe establish the fun part first and make us feel connected to the family before delving into the racial elements. Anyway, just my thoughts.

Not, being part of the elite, we still knew of them as a child, Jack & Jill, Boule , brown paper bag etc. I find most of their stories fascinating and inspiring, we black folks aren’t a monolith. Well, I'll tell you, I remember The Fall Guy back in the 1980s, and I remember when I first heard about this movie I thought, that's weird, that was the name of a cool show starring Lee Majors back in the 80s, this doesn't look anything like it. It came across as a chick-flick/romantic comedy that I'd NEVER waste my money on. Lee Majors was cool. Ryan Goslin is a beta-male chick-flick actor. Hell, Grace Randolph was swooning over him, so I had ZERO INTEREST in it. Is it fair? Maybe not, but life isn't fair. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
