As someone whos been making art for 10+ years I've slowly been losing my passion for it in the last few years due to feeling discouraged and feeling like what I make isn't good enough or skilled enough for how long i've been doing it. Watching dish grow so much and seeing her learn and have fun with her art honestly brings back my passion for it and makes me want to go draw right now. it's so encouraging.
mate, i dont know where you are on drawing skills, but, if you draw for a long time, just go a long time on the same piece , you'll see the difference, cause the time one ONE piece make all the diff, i draw all day quick sketches and allmost all of them look cranky for me , but, with my trained eye now, i know that's they all can go perfect if i just put the effort to transform my quick sketch idea into a 10h drawing that look like a master piece , ;)
@@eliotguillot8315 been drawing poses for a year now but I still can't draw any from imagination my memory seems to be unable to save new information and use jt
Hyperfixation really does improve art! I’ve been drawing Genshin art since I started playing nearly 2 years ago, and nothing has made me want to improve my art as much as that fandom. There’s so many talented artists there that I look up to and push me to keep trying.
dude same!! always seeing amazing fanart made me want to improve WAY more :D also the fact that the outfits are so complex made me improve in my own oc art by making myself learn character design
Amazing quote from SamDoesArt: "You need to learn the rules, before you break them." Honestly art is one of the most difficult things to learn, because it is different for everyone, but you're doing AMAZING so far!!!!!!
I like his "don't run from responsibilities" whenever he talks about drawing difficult parts. Actually, this is exactly what drives me to draw hands on my characters instead of hiding them. I just tell myself "don't run from responsibilities" and I force myself to draw them even if it's painful.
Honestly, that advice is so real. I got so much better at drawing humans because I wanted to draw my favourite 2013 Minecraft UA-camrs as their borderlands personas. Fanart is the best fuel for art because it just feels so good.
as person who drew for more than 10 years i can agreed: go wild, go as you can and as you like. There's always be the "right way" but that way can be something you don't enjoy or just feel like it's not it. So trying different stuff, learning from others, trying to seek and pick stuff which fit to you and the way you want to draw and imagine stuff. Also obsession with something is true. I change fandoms after few years in between i obsessed with my own project and it always keeps me motivated and interested. Sometimes i return to something i enjoyed and felt like after years i can do something which i couldn't years ago and THAT spark interest. so, din your spark, follow it but don't afraid to picl another if you need
As an old, *_old_* commercial artist, let me say that anyone who draws (for example) movie posters, uses not only photo reference, but *_projects_* same on the illo board for his/her painting. Even better, if they work digitally, they do exactly what you did: They trace, then render, the actors' image to create the final piece. This is not only faster but also more accurate, when capturing a likeness is vital.
I think you finally understood the difference between drawing and painting. The blocking in the shapes and building is painting, you dont have to worry because it will come together in the end. The planning and line work is drawing, they are 2 different skills but most people lump them together without knowing it. I went through that process myself with oil painting. Once you get it, then you REALLY get it.
my decision to stop worrying about whether my art "counted as art" just because it was majorly fanart was a HUGE blessing to me art-wise. I had a pretty awful dry period when it came to art for a few months because of some rough things I was going through in life, and I just recently started getting into Sonic. Let me tell you - nothing has been more fulfilling and healing than letting that hyperfixation sweep me off of my feet and back into art. My art has been improving dramatically lately after plateauing for so long and I have genuine inspiration and motivation to do it. It's so encouraging that you're having a similar experience letting your interests influence and spur you on in art, and those pieces are just amazing!!
Yeah I kind of have that right now. i so desperatly want to make somethin goriginal but then I will start and immediately give up. So now I am going to draw fanart and hope it helps :)
I got obsessed with OMORI during summer on May 2021 and that got me back to drawing after stopping completely the year prior... then my sister got a drawing tablet for me and all I did was draw OMORI. I don't draw OMORI all the time anymore but I've improved a lot since then so I can say that yes, having an obsession with something can indeed help you improve your art LOL
those paintings are so good omg!! I loooove seeing your immediate improvement the second you cracked the code for yourself! I had a similar thing where I would always get hung up on lineart for YEARS until one day I was just like "heck this" and simply went from sketch > colours (instead of sketch > lines > colours) and it improved both my art, and my SPEED tenfold. So seeing you be able to crack that code fairly early on in your journey is such a blessing. I'm so stoked and excited to see how your art develops in the coming months, and years!! You go this, Dish!
yeah hyperfixations really do let your art improve so fast,, i was heavily hyperfixated on jojo from 2020-2021, and the difference in my art over the months was insane. im so glad you found a way you like to work!!!! im also someone who enjoys just. painting stuff and refining it so that was cool to see!!! ur art is looking so good
Honestly such a good exercise! I'm now inspired to the same to brush up on my body anatomy, Maybe I should let myself fall back into my Pirates of the Caribbean obsession. Thank you for deciding to post your art journey again, it's so fun to see how much you have improved in such a short time
honestly as someone else learning art from scratch as well, i also realised that i struggle with a fear of failure which creates a big barrier of entry. this one video taught me so much about the importance of mindset and finding the right technique! super proud of ur progress and thank u so much for sharing this with us! you've inspired me so so much already and i can't wait to see ur further progress :D
dish discovering the beauty of digital painting is so relatable. sketching is of course foundational, but being able too see the larger formations from just putting colors/shapes on the canvas is a better visual than trying to figure out the shape through sketching it. edit: i like to call this process carving. since you put down a shape n slowly erase away to get the proper shape. so far am loving this series!
I feel like the main takeaway from this is truly your line about removing barriers of entry. I've been dabbling in drawing since I was a pre-teen, and never managed to stick with it long enough to see real progress because I was obsessed with every line being right where it should be. I wanted my sketches to look clean from the very start, and if it didn't work out (which, as you can imagine, happened often) I would get super discouraged and stop drawing for days, weeks, even months. I tried the swatch method, I tried doing larger lines, everything I could to make my brain accept this process of sketching THEN refining, but it didn't work. Since last year, though, I started dabbling in vroid, and boy has it been an absolute blast. Since the main frame of the character is already there, I can focus on finding those clean lines bit by bit, breaking down the work in tiny little digestible pieces. Since I've been doing it way more frequently than when I used to simply draw, my drawing motions have become surer and my technique has improved, which has shot my confidence level high enough that I can now accept imperfect lines because I KNOW I can make them better later on. It seems like such an obvious thing, but it truly took me these many years to get it seared into my brain. I AM capable of drawing better. I AM capable of making better art. And most importantly, I feel like I'm now able to dabble into 2D again without crumbling under my insecurities. So thank you for showing us your process and thank you for being vulnerable with us dish. I can't wait to see the shapes you art journey will take, and know I'll be along for the ride while shaping my own ! :)
I never realized how much hyperfixations helped me with my art, and seeing others channel that energy into progress is simply beautiful to see. Love your videos! Hope you have a great time drawing
I saw this on twitter and was so stunned and curious about your amazing progress at the same time, thank you so much for sharing this, super inspiring!
ive been obsessively doodling the same cast of about ten characters for several months now and i can absolutely confirm it improves your art. lyra has never looked better the baggy clothes have even forcibly taught me how to do wrinkly fabric. nelwrens stupid bandages and self-destructive behaviour has made me completely remaster how i draw blood. i studied tooth anatomy to draw claw snarling like the feral little goblin she is. life is great when youre hyperfixating on your ocs
Hyberhyperfixations improving art quickly is one of the most truest things. I have always been drawing since I was a little girl. But the moment when my art suddenly started to improve quickly was when I was 12 and watched this anime called "Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan" Omg, there hasn't been a sketchbook I've owned past that day that didn't have Nura fanart inside. I even filled sketchbooks and files on my computer with drawings from that series. I also made like 10 ocs too. One of my best drawings that I felt the most proud of was Nura fanart. I'm still obsessed, but the fire has flickered down a little bit. It has been like over a decade since the manga ended... But then recently I heard news that there's gonna be 4 new chapters released in April this year. And so, after a whole day spent fangirl screaming, I've been back at it again, drawing an obsessive amount of Nura stuff...
Omggg can i just say thats literally also why i didnt get into anime at first cos i knew id be obsessed like there was too many things alr on my list + school. Now im finally a weeb as a working gal
Hi miss dish!! I wanted to give you tips that always help me to keep me drawing. I've been drawing for more than 12+ years, prwctically since I was a kid, and one of the phrases I've learnt is "variety is the spice of life" and it totally applies to drawing. My tip is to enter pinterest quite often. It may not sound like a huge thing, but it really helps to keep you stay artsy, discovering new concepts and different drawing syles and technics makes you want to draw every single one of them! It helps me a lot since I'm veey experimental and I can never stick to one thing. Also, another tip for maybe new things like creating characters or try different painting/drawing technics you havent tried before: be always experimental and try risks, even tho your scared to failure, its something i sadly learnt too late since I started drawing. So excited for you getting into drawing again! ❤ ALSO THOSE KYLOS THOOO OMG😭👌
obsession with kpop during uni days helped me get back to drawing ... the concept photos of this one kpop group were so pretty and creative and colorful that inspired me to do fanart of, and since then even tho my obsession with the group faded the drawing inspo still remained :3
You know what? I'm going to try this with my writing. If it paid off so well for you, Dish, I'm confident the same would happen with me. Wish me luck! (Also congrats to you on your drawings they look amazing 💖)
As someone that’s had a lot of all-encompassing hyperfixations but no way to really expel my brain matter anywhere, this really inspires me to maybe start my own art journey. I’ve always thought i just wasn’t meant for being an artist but seeing your organic journey has really started to change my mind. you’ve come so far, maybe i could too.
Idk why I feel like crying, I'm so proud of you! I'm also on my art journey, but haven't been able to crack my brain lol, the struggle is real. (your last work is actually the style that I would love to master, I love how the colours look)
This is so true! Obsession over jojo and genshin motivated me to draw and is tbh the only reason i've gotten decent at art. It is such a motivator to keep drawing things you love and look over that improvement. ALSO OMG THE LAST DRAWING LOOKS SO STUNNING GREAT JOB!!!
The hyperfixation thing is so true, I’m sure many can relate but I’ve had this one OC I made in my freshmen year of high school, and I’m now a senior in college and I still draw him almost everyday, and I love to look at my years of art and my improvement and evolution through my drawings of him
I'm actually sooo happy with how you were able to crack the unspoken code of hyperfixation to your art subject AHAHAHAHA. I think every artist actually goes towards this type of learning method, me included. I started drawing by being so hyper fixated with Pokemon and drawn them a lot as a kid. As I grew up, learning different techniques, and trying out different mediums is nice, but to have something in art to be fixated on is like training your brain to dissect the subject and relying on your muscle memory and creativity to place that fixation on the canvas (layer on digital haha). Currently, being super into anime, genshin and environmental art it really expanded how I create my illustrations as well. Keep on drawing the things you love Dish! Always rooting for you and other fellow artists out there!
Miss dish! If you want to get into the habit of being consistent. You could try having a traditional sketchbook! It doesn’t always have to be drawings! With a sketchbook you can also put in things you find inspiring or things you find interesting! It’s a great way to have materials in your hands and play around with them. It also works as a type of discipline whereas creating something and not erasing over and over until you get it perfect. Also as someone who has been in and out of creating things and trying new mediums, I suggest you try out as many mediums as you can! It will certainly help your creative process. I also recommend getting and finding art books! They contain a lot of useful tips and they contain the structures and process of some of the art. OH I also forgot to mention that many lovely people here on UA-cam have something called a “sketchbook tour” they are very helpful and it helps you get an insight on how other people fill their books! Thats all for now, I hope this is of some use to you.
You explained this in the best way possible! I’ve been having art block for while now, but recently I started reading mangas and Korean webtoons who’s art and stories are so good that they make me obsess and feel a feral NEED to draw the characters. Often drawing these characters spark some inspiration and I end up drawing my own characters from it. Obesessing over something really does work wonders. 😭👌🏽
This was both a joy to watch and a fantastic guide for getting over that initial “how do I even start” hurdle! Thank you so much ms dish! I hope you keep arting! Even if you may have accidentally reawakened MY kylo ren obsession…😂
Im so happy for you!! The Kylo Ren piece was really amazing!! This video just dawned on me even more how Hyperfixating on a fandom really improves your art.. FAST.. like there's this thing in my head that's like "I love this thing so much, I MUST draw it in this and that" and before I knew I'm drawing lots and lots of it, even created an original character for them to interact with the world and the characters that I really love, and before I knew it my art was improving rapidly and im getting to collaborate with my favorite artists in the same fandom that I never knew I would before.... And it all happened in less than a year
Thank you for tracing, that part of the video, especially what you were saying during the process, is my favorite. And daaaaaamn that last drawing is awesome! seeing your progress from the first pictures you were tracing to the last one is so substancial. Keep it up Dish, you actually inspired me to learn more. WITH TRACING and I don't care what people say.
I absolutely agree, drawing what you like the most is the best way to improve and I really love how your art style is kinda showing up already in the star wars portrait!!
this is actually true! a few months (years?) back, i had this HUGE obsession with jet from atla because i mainly had a crush on him, and i drew him almost EVERY DAY on my laptop until i kind of took a break from drawing. but i still do have an obsession with jet, but its just not that huge back in the day.
Can’t even begin to explain the joy it’s been seeing your journey. As artists, we are growing everyday and when I saw the last drawing in this video it made me so unbelievably happy! Your improvement rate is astronomical and I am so proud of you. Believe it or not I get so much drive and inspiration from your videos and it makes me realize again and again why I started drawing. I can’t wait to see where you will go even just a couple months from now, happy drawing guys!
THIS IS SO COOL! I’ve done a lot of digital painting myself and I just had deja vu watching you go through this process- learning to block things out with shapes of color first, keeping it messy and then refining later. Thanks so much for sharing your process!
Honestly, this means a lot just coming out of a spiral that came from me procrastinating on various items for various related reasons. This took me out of the dark and just. . . Woke me up. So thanks.
wow dish, i’m honestly amazed. i’m so proud of you, your progress is astonishing! the artwork you’re creating is really starting to form into your own and i’m loving that for you, i’m so happy you’re finding art enjoyable again, you’re a huge inspiration so thank you for sharing your art with us❤ and regarding art block- it can be a pain and if you come across it again, don’t worry it will pass! don’t stress yourself when it does! just take some time and naturally come back when you feel inspired to draw again, that’s the best way i’ve found to work around it, rather then pushing through it and burning out. anyway, once again i’m so proud and happy for you, keep up your amazing work i can’t wait to see more! ❤
Ive been an artist since I was an itty bitty 6th grader, thats about 9 years or so. And this obsession method, where you use your passion as a drive for art really works. It’s how most of my art i’ve made has gotten better/progressed; So I’m so glad you’re finding the fun in drawing some of your favorite media. 💙
I've always worried that getting hyperfixated on specific fandoms or themes while drawing was wasting time i could spend on other "more productive" practice, and I felt kinda bad every time I inevitably fell down the rabbit hole. This was super interesting to watch and see the side I didn't consider, how you can experiment with your art more freely and embrace that focus. Thank you for sharing your process and thoughts as you go, really love your style! 💛
I'm so glad I came across this video. I do the same thing where I fixate on a character or world and then am sad that I can't be a part of it ( I was actually going through that this weekend) Im getting into drawing and can certainly do with more practice. I was wondering if drawing scenes from what I'm fixating over would help or just make me look more obsessive. Thanks for this video. It was inspiring and encouraging
as a graphic design student in her junior year, this video is making me feel SEEN hahhaha I was stuck in an art slump but ❤ thank you dish for the boost of encouragement 🥺
you're doing such a great job!! i have been following you since the start of your art journey and lemme say I am so freaking proud of you!! not only for the amazing art you have been putting out (that last drawing??? omg I'm obsessed) but also for not giving up and going through all the harsh fases. this art series have given me a lot of inspiration for keeping on drawing as well. thank you miss dish
this was the most helpful video i’ve ever seen. i’ve been trying to get myself to learn drawing portraits for my entire life and i’ve always started, gotten insecure, and then given up all before i ever even made a dent. but this video finally made it click in my brain that i just need to DO IT and i won’t fail as long as i keep trying my best. thank you so much for sharing your journey and for helping others get over the hurdle of simply starting ❤
bro this is so true, i found a really cool girl with this cool outfit from pinterest (it was a cover artwork from a comic book) and i just couldnt get it out of my head for days, like i had the urge to draw it, and so i did and i really really liked the outcome, it also helped me improve in female anatomy!!
Fixating on a specific piece of media is already more that enough motivation itself. I remember i took i really long break from art and only picked it back up when i played mystic messenger then continued for genshin lol. The urge to draw you favourite characters over and over, prettier than the last, is overwhelming. Now im currently in a danmei rot and........ let me tell you that i can only draw pretty boys now
dish you are an inspiration. I've loved drawing my whole life and always have considered myself an artist but the past year or so I felt extremely discouraged. I drew everyday, I used references, I looked up videos online, I did everything I was supposed to... but I felt like I had hit a wall. I had plenty of things I WANTED to draw, but it never looked right and never came out the way I wanted and I felt like I had stopped improving. so I stopped drawing and filled my time with other activities instead. but recently I've REALLY missed it! I love to draw! but I would look online, even to just my friends artwork! and my confidence fell again. I think I'm going to try to draw ONE thing today. it doesn't have to be good. heck I plan to trace (using a real persons photo so I can get real human ataomy practice not just cartoon XD)! but I want to start drawing again. I nearly cried at 5:35 - 6:21 and that's when I decided to type this comment EVEN THOUGH you will probably never see it XD cuz even though you may never know I exist you did change my life just a little and I'm grateful < 3
that final painting is so gorgeous!!! thank you for sharing your process with us :) it really hits different to watch you grow and learn in real time, as a fellow beginner I feel so inspired ❤
As someone who’s been on/off art for years and finally getting into a groove, watching this and seeing your progression and want to progress is so awesome to see ! Please keep going and making whatever you love 🙏🏾
I’m very glad you confidently disregarded what other have to say about tracing. It’s a great tool for practice and nobody should be ashamed of it. Not everyone is going to create some perfect sketch lines, and tracing is the essentially the dumbbell to train your hands and soon enough be able to create these things without tracing.
I'm glad you added that last bit about talent. I've seen and interacted with sooooo many people who express an interest in learning art who can't push through the initial phases of learning, dismissing their first, unrefined artworks as a lack of talent. Art has never required a degree of talent to be created. Yes, it might help speed up parts of the progress if you excel in certain aspects of it, but ultimately it will not be the main reason for any one person becoming a professional artist. Art is an endless journey of learning and self improvement. Being faster at picking up certain parts of it from being "talented" doesn't matter if the journey itself never ends. I really enjoyed watching this little snapshot of your art journey, and I'm looking forward to seeing more! 🙏
This video came onto my FYP after having a bit of a similar thing happening. I recently found my love for a long-dormant special interest. And I too, needed to get it out of my system and draw it. Silly thumbnail doodles in my sketchbook, writing the ideas down before I was capable of drawing them the way I wanted too. Attempted to draw his face on paper but really struggled, which is why I also proceeded to trace the actors face. I considered sharing these traced pieces of artwork but only because I was so happy with the shading I did, despite using the reference. I can't wait to continue down this path, and it's nice to have this video as a reminder that things are okay and progress is made! Also the advice with the little monster in shading absolutely perfect :D
Thanks for mentioning that about tracing. It is a good learning tool. I often trace my own art, especially to make small sketches into larger drawings. Digital artists do this as part of their process, I just print off my sketches and physically trace over my old work. It's almost the same idea as warping your drawing to move around the features. You can always put down a new layer and trace your work, fixing what you want to move around. I recommend it over warping, but I also warp my art when finalizing it.
Fandom has been the one thing to make me motivated enough to be fixated on progress and doing better. My art before i found fandom was slowly progressing and then i found fandom and it just...the motivation to learn and do my best was there like never before. Point is, draw whats fun and what you find joy in because that's the road that leads to progress. Regardless of what the topic is.
As a professional illustrator, sometimes you just gotta cling to whatever makes you create art. Especially now because I need to pay the bills with those illustrations 🙃 Take care of yourself, Dish! We're proud of you 💖
This actually makes me wanna draw more I used to make artworks but then took huge break because obviously felt not good enough but seeing all this process and thoughts about artwork kinda resonate at some places. Like instead of being a perfectionist just doing for the joy /fun while making imperfections overall makes everything perfect . Thank you for sharing your thoughts and views it actually inspires a lot to make more works 🤗
I don't think I've ever resonated so much with anything else ever than this video! I've been following almost the same process to encourage myself to create more frequently. Although, there still is quite a bit of fear there which hinders consistency but I'm trying not to bash myself for it. I'll keep coming back to this video not just to remember what I want to work towards but more so to mirror the kindness that you so patiently show to yourself. I'm getting misty-eyed just being grateful that you created this video. Thank you, dish.
After I had left my Roleplay phase as a 15 year old, I slowly stopped making art and I keep beating myself up for all the art I have made. I like to have purpose in my work, and this video actually makes me feel better. I'm now 19, been drawing since I was about 8 or 9. I think I just put too much pressure on myself to produce for "purpose" then to produce for "fun". It sucks, cause I naturally create, I do all kinds of things. I wanna try to get back into the gist of things, and like you did in this video, I have been learning that it helps a lot to consume media and just draw it. Definitely need to act on this advice!
Showing your progress and sharing your thoughts is rly helping me with working on something I am also passionate about (which has nothing to do with art somehow) You are making it rly educational and somehow even relatable feels like some kind of magic Thank you♥
I can’t express to you how much I adore your videos. It’s such a relief to see a beginner somewhat like myself going through the painstaking stages of trial and error that is beginning drawing. I’m currently trying to learn anatomy and I just kept disappointing myself. But when I found your video it brought me to tears, you’ve given me hope to pursue my practice again! You’re afraid to fail but you power through, and it makes me think I could power through too. Thank you so much. ❤
dish i hope u know your content is my comfort entertainment, like i had a TRASH day and i came to watch this vid while i ate cause mindless behavior but i actually feel so much better than i did before. thank you for being such a wonderful human, you’re the best miss dish
been burntout these past few weeks and havent drawn something new in like a month, this definitely motivated me to just try and draw smth and to not be fixed in all the barrier entries. ty so much dish :D
SO SO REAL!! for me, the best way to get rid of art block is to develop/rebirth a new interest!! every one of my sketchbooks so far are filled with fanart from. every fandom ive been in every since basically elementary school. its very fun hehe
dish! i've been rewatching your old vlogs and your art series recently and have been feeling really creatively inspired. your videos remind me that yes, i am a creative person too and i need to remember to live a creative life and make time to enrich this side of myself. i really appreciate how transparent you are about the slow steady process of growth in your videos and it makes me excited for you to see how great of a start this channel is having! anyway, randomly decided to learn how to crochet a few days ago. it's always been something i've wanted to learn how to do and i'm crocheting as i watch this. it really is never too late for anything. here's to the pursuit of learning! thanks for sharing :)
oh my god i need to say i just got to the part of your 30 minute painting of adam driver laying down and my jaw literally dropped when i saw it - IT'S SO GOOD DISH YES!!! I'm so amazed by how you push yourself and how rapidly you're improving!!
Your realization around tracing is very true and very grown up. Hell, as an illustrator, we learned very quickly that if we wanted to upscale our project, just photocopy it enlarged and then trace it on the light table. There's a reason those tools exist!
The amount I improved in just 3 or 4 months after finding an indie Vtuber that makes me feel included and appreciated and shelling out fanart of her and other similar smaller streamers. I feel myself improving way more now than when I was occasionally drawing someone or something different every now and then. This is very true. Obsession/passion drives growth.
Love this video. I’ve been trying to get better at drawing. I’ve been struggling with just drawing from imagination vs doing what I want, which is to draw what I’m hyper fixated on. I feel you I spent a big part of my teens and early twenties (and honestly still now) trying to keep my hyper fixations at bay but I’m slowly starting to learn to use them to get things done instead of fighting against them.
this video gave me so much inspiration and reason to keep improving my art and practicing more (i’m basically a beginner just like you, in digital art), thank you
ive been drawing for 10 years and doing digital art for a little under half and tracing is so incredibly helpful and people dont understand that usually because they dont understand tracing is not something you do for anything BUT practice. tracing is only harmful when you try and profit or claim otherwise. YOURE DOING AMAZIGN DISHヾ(≧▽≦*)o
I'm really excited to see this journey for yourself. I remember when you started to express interest into drawing, I was extremely stoked. Wherever you go with this, you have your fans' support! Can't wait to see what you do with this series
Your art videos always make me so emotional, cause i relate to them so much. Especially this theme about obsession art - i come back into my biggest one again after some time resting in genshin and all what i have now is endless desire to draw and do everything to transfer my thoughts to art. Also love your art, was very happy to see it in twt🫶🫶
Dish, you progressed so much, it's amazing! That 30 minute painting was honestly incredible! Im glad you finally found the solution, from one artist to another, I wish you all the best in achieving your dream of becoming an artist!
I also tried blocking out colours as a method today and I made a piece that I really liked and it took me like way less time to draw than I usually take. Also I love this vid, it makes me want to draw even more, I feel so motivated!!
Good job dish ! The paintings are so pretty~ I've definitely found out through experience that drawing your obsessions is very helpful to keep you motivated and interested in your art.
thank you for watching!!!!! I hope you feel encouraged and enriched having spent your time with me. see u soon ❤
You remind me so much of myself at times. Love your channel. Also that Zhongli edit I have seen it and my god.
This gave me a lot of inspo to draw some of my favorite fandoms (my Heaven officials blessing drawings are back lmao) thank youuu
You deserve it it's always refreshing seeing new artists grow . Very motivating for us beginner Aswell ❤❤
i am now encouraged
I feel VERY encouraged!!
As someone whos been making art for 10+ years I've slowly been losing my passion for it in the last few years due to feeling discouraged and feeling like what I make isn't good enough or skilled enough for how long i've been doing it. Watching dish grow so much and seeing her learn and have fun with her art honestly brings back my passion for it and makes me want to go draw right now. it's so encouraging.
that’s what I like to hear!!
this is literally what I'm struggling with now. "I'm a professional working artist. My work should never look bad". I can't shake this mindset.
mate, i dont know where you are on drawing skills, but, if you draw for a long time, just go a long time on the same piece , you'll see the difference, cause the time one ONE piece make all the diff, i draw all day quick sketches and allmost all of them look cranky for me , but, with my trained eye now, i know that's they all can go perfect if i just put the effort to transform my quick sketch idea into a 10h drawing that look like a master piece , ;)
I'm want to become a freelance artist and losing my passion is one of the things that scares me the most, I'm glad that you've found inspiration again
Fr tho
Samee!
Yeah I love gorillaz and it’s all I think about
Genshin absolutely improved my art especially because you have to look at the details
Amazing quote from SamDoesArt: "You need to learn the rules, before you break them." Honestly art is one of the most difficult things to learn, because it is different for everyone, but you're doing AMAZING so far!!!!!!
Good advice but I am pretty sure he didn't make this quote. That's like the oldest quote in the art community lol
@@valeriaaraujo9962 just the first person i heard the quote from, thought it was neat :)
i just watched his video and i remember him saying that lol i love him lmaoo
I like his "don't run from responsibilities" whenever he talks about drawing difficult parts. Actually, this is exactly what drives me to draw hands on my characters instead of hiding them. I just tell myself "don't run from responsibilities" and I force myself to draw them even if it's painful.
Yeah he was totally the one that came up with that quote 🙄 lol. that's been said for years
Omg guys she found her way to DRAW :,) I’m so fricking proud of you Dish! You’re developing so fast!
Aw you're so adorable but we're all proud of any artists deciding to show to ideas to the world ❤❤❤
Bob Ross said it best:
"Talent is a pursued interest. In other words, anything that you're willing to practice, you can do!" :D
Once you get it, then you REALLY get it.
painting definitely made me better at drawing. I miss it a lot.
my decision to stop worrying about whether my art "counted as art" just because it was majorly fanart was a HUGE blessing to me art-wise.
Thank you for deciding to post your art journey again, it's so fun to see how much you have improved in such a short time
YESSS!!! YOU UNDERSTOOD!!
just splosh the colors in and refine it from there!!
A fundamental for traditional art.
The true beauty of art making.
honestly as someone else learning art from scratch as well, i also realised that i struggle with a fear of failure which creates a big barrier of entry. this one video taught me so much about the importance of mindset and finding the right technique! super proud of ur progress and thank u so much for sharing this with us! you've inspired me so so much already and i can't wait to see ur further progress :D
dish discovering the beauty of digital painting is so relatable.
sketching is of course foundational, but being able too see the larger formations from just putting colors/shapes on the canvas is a better visual than trying to figure out the shape through sketching it.
edit: i like to call this process carving. since you put down a shape n slowly erase away to get the proper shape.
so far am loving this series!
But the moment when my art suddenly started to improve quickly was when I was 12 and watched this anime called "Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan"
Omg, there hasn't been a sketchbook I've owned past that day that didn't have Nura fanart inside.
THE SHELLSHOCKED EXPRESSION WITH THE ZHONGLI SOUND IN THE BACKGROUND LMAOOO 2:09
I've never felt more seen with my fixations 😂 "universe that i wanna live in but i cant" describes it the best
ALSO THOSE KYLOS THOOO OMG😭👌
The way you improved so fast, I'm both jealous and impressed, good job fam
obsession with kpop during uni days helped me get back to drawing ... the concept photos of this one kpop group were so pretty and creative and colorful that inspired me to do fanart of, and since then even tho my obsession with the group faded the drawing inspo still remained :3
Dish you improved so much. You made me want to draw along with you. Can't wait to see your drawing journey further!
OMGGG THE PAINTING ONE TURNED OUT SO WELL!!! I've always wanted to try the painting style of art. Maybe this will inspire me to try it :DD
Idk why I feel like crying, I'm so proud of you! I'm also on my art journey, but haven't been able to crack my brain lol, the struggle is real. (your last work is actually the style that I would love to master, I love how the colours look)
The struggle is real 🖤
I felt that.
I absolutely love your umbreon light in the back!! So cute
This is so true! Obsession over jojo and genshin motivated me to draw and is tbh the only reason i've gotten decent at art. It is such a motivator to keep drawing things you love and look over that improvement. ALSO OMG THE LAST DRAWING LOOKS SO STUNNING GREAT JOB!!!
ive never spiritually connected to a dish video more in my entire life
The hyperfixation thing is so true, I’m sure many can relate but I’ve had this one OC I made in my freshmen year of high school, and I’m now a senior in college and I still draw him almost everyday, and I love to look at my years of art and my improvement and evolution through my drawings of him
I'm actually sooo happy with how you were able to crack the unspoken code of hyperfixation to your art subject AHAHAHAHA.
WITH TRACING and I don't care what people say.
you've inspired me as an artist to keep on drawing and practicing. keep on going dish, we love you 💖
I absolutely agree, drawing what you like the most is the best way to improve and I really love how your art style is kinda showing up already in the star wars portrait!!
this is actually true! a few months (years?) back, i had this HUGE obsession with jet from atla because i mainly had a crush on him, and i drew him almost EVERY DAY on my laptop until i kind of took a break from drawing. but i still do have an obsession with jet, but its just not that huge back in the day.
This was so, so delightful to watch! Your paintings are awesome, especially for a beginner!
This took me out of the dark and just. . . Woke me up. So thanks.
Producing something you’re proud of is so exhilarating! ❤ so happy for you!
wow dish, i’m honestly amazed. i’m so proud of you, your progress is astonishing! the artwork you’re creating is really starting to form into your own and i’m loving that for you, i’m so happy you’re finding art enjoyable again, you’re a huge inspiration so thank you for sharing your art with us❤
and regarding art block- it can be a pain and if you come across it again, don’t worry it will pass! don’t stress yourself when it does! just take some time and naturally come back when you feel inspired to draw again, that’s the best way i’ve found to work around it, rather then pushing through it and burning out.
anyway, once again i’m so proud and happy for you, keep up your amazing work i can’t wait to see more!
It was inspiring and encouraging
as a graphic design student in her junior year, this video is making me feel SEEN hahhaha I was stuck in an art slump but ❤ thank you dish for the boost of encouragement 🥺
you're doing such a great job!! i have been following you since the start of your art journey and lemme say I am so freaking proud of you!! not only for the amazing art you have been putting out (that last drawing??? omg I'm obsessed) but also for not giving up and going through all the harsh fases. this art series have given me a lot of inspiration for keeping on drawing as well. thank you miss dish
this was the most helpful video i’ve ever seen. i’ve been trying to get myself to learn drawing portraits for my entire life and i’ve always started, gotten insecure, and then given up all before i ever even made a dent. but this video finally made it click in my brain that i just need to DO IT and i won’t fail as long as i keep trying my best. thank you so much for sharing your journey and for helping others get over the hurdle of simply starting ❤
ive learned that hyperfixations always helps with art! glad to see you found something that really works for you!! :)
bro this is so true, i found a really cool girl with this cool outfit from pinterest (it was a cover artwork from a comic book) and i just couldnt get it out of my head for days, like i had the urge to draw it, and so i did and i really really liked the outcome, it also helped me improve in female anatomy!!
Louder for the people in the back, TRACING IS INVALUABLE!!
Thank you for sharing!
These are great examples of an early artist in the making.
Most people wouldn't dare show this step.
Showing your progress and sharing your thoughts is rly helping me with working on something I am also passionate about (which has nothing to do with art somehow)
You are making it rly educational and somehow even relatable feels like some kind of magic
Thank you♥
I do sketching on book but now I’m learning to draw on iPad which is a bit hard. LOVE YOUR ART❤❤
some people draw characters so good that I get obsessed with their OCs. 😭it makes me wanna draw as well and I love that!💞
I can’t express to you how much I adore your videos.
Go dish!!!! Its really nice hearing you talk through the positive and negative thought processes you have throughout the process
Your realization around tracing is very true and very grown up. Hell, as an illustrator, we learned very quickly that if we wanted to upscale our project, just photocopy it enlarged and then trace it on the light table. There's a reason those tools exist!
I LOVE THE OMORI SWEATSHIRT😭💗
Your sincerity is refreshing, especially when worrying if I’m the only one sketching the same way you do. Cheers.
BEST DISH CONTENT EVER! so inspiring and so passionate. Just dont feel pressure to post on this channel bcs of the burnout hits really hard
this video gave me so much inspiration and reason to keep improving my art and practicing more (i’m basically a beginner just like you, in digital art), thank you
ive been drawing for 10 years and doing digital art for a little under half and tracing is so incredibly helpful and people dont understand that usually because they dont understand tracing is not something you do for anything BUT practice. tracing is only harmful when you try and profit or claim otherwise.
Planning on starting an art journey myself at the age 25, thank you for the inspiration.
The paintings are so pretty~
I've definitely found out through experience that drawing your obsessions is very helpful to keep you motivated and interested in your art.
Coming up with a comfortable pipeline, and then just following and refining it is the key! :3
