    How much apple cider vinegar did you use and lye? I read that you have to use more lye when using apple cider vinegar like you would with citrus, is that true?

      That's awesome!! I've brewed kombucha, but never cider vinegar. I understand it's a similar process?

    • @JenSpice
      @JenSpice 5 років тому

      @@AmyWarden Yes! The process is very similar to brewing kombucha but it just takes longer. The smaller the amount of 'mother vinegar' in your batch the longer it takes. I've been growing mine for years so it is a lot larger than most (but teeny compared to kombucha). I'll be posting my method this next month if you are interested. :)Jen

    • @AmyWarden
      @AmyWarden  5 років тому +1

      Thank you, Mary! As far as I know it just neutralizes some of the lye to create a higher superfat, which does feel nice on the skin. I'm looking forward to testing it out later!

    I thought vinegar neutralises lye so how can it make soap.

    • @AmyWarden
      @AmyWarden  5 років тому +1

      The pH scale goes from 1-14, with 7 being neutral. Lye is a 13-14 on that scale so it's way stronger than the acid provided by the cider vinegar which is closer to 5.

    • @ecomamaadmin3328

      Does the acid make the soap milder? Also, what's the benefit of using the ACV?

    Amy, Im in love with this soap too. Im going to have to binge watch all your videos. LOL You are an amazing soaper. You truly inspire me to try different things I never thought I would. I have one question to ask? You didnt mention how this soap smelled if you did I missed it, Im curious cause of the vinegar it is such a strong smell. Did it stay in the soap at all or did your essential oils cover up the smell? I was always told that essential oils disappear in coldprocess soap and to use fragrances with some clays or arrowroot powder or natrasorb to bind your fragrance to your oils but I dont see you do that. Can you give me your opinion on that last statement, if essential oils hold up and do you think binding fragrances with those ingredients really works. Thank you for your amazing soaps and tutorials and thank you for always answering my questions. Keep soaping and God Bless you and your family.

    • @AmyWarden
      @AmyWarden  5 років тому

      There's no vinegar smell in the final soap. The essential oil blend sticks just fine, with the patchouli being the strongest that I can smell. You can definitely use essential oils in cold process soap if you anchor them with base notes such as patchouli. Quality fragrance oils shouldn't need clay, arrowroot powder or tapioca starch to hold them in cold process soap either. The best way to find out if a fragrance will hold is to test it!

    people says the temperature for oils and lye should be 120f to 130f but here it looks very less what is the temperature of your lye and oils? also i have noticed that this recipe not reached trace

    • @AmyWarden
      @AmyWarden  5 років тому +2

      That is a traditional recommendation for temperatures. Mine are usually closer to 90. It keeps the batter fluid longer. I also like to mix just until the oils and lye are emulsified. It takes some practice to recognize this pre-trace stage, but again gives more time to work with the soap and it will still set up! 😊
