I have no idea what she sounds like now, but I'd be willing to put money down that it's pretty much exactly the same; whereas most singers push their voices or hit certain high notes or whatever, her style of singing seems like it would require the least amount of effort and she could do it that way for the rest of her life.
@@mattrhodes3982 I'm sorry, sir, we're all out of Lennox, but please check later with us. Or, wait, were you offering me some Lennox? If you were, I'm fine - I've already had some. But thanks...
It's interesting. When this came out, I was a teenage boy and did not get it at all. Booooring! I literally had to grow up to be able to realize and appreciate her talent and beauty.
Sometimes I forget how much I love this song. I was 16 in '86. It was an extraordinary year for me, musically. I was discovering a lot of amazing stuff.
I was 18. It seemed like most of the songs in the early to mid eighties were able to describe things I was going through in a way I couldn't express myself.
The 80's whenever I look for lost gems that I might have forgotten about or didn't know existed , I'm always able to dig in and be amazed of what that decade had to offer. This includes movies as well. The 80's was definitely the last decade awesome pop culture. I didn't realize how good things were back then and I miss it tremendously.👍
Was pulled over on I-195 in NJ in 1998, clocked at 133 MPH, listening to this song. Left of the center lane. Left without a license. Mr. Joe Jackson on piano here.
My friend could really relate to this beautiful song. She was inspired by it, and felt a sense of belonging when she listened to it, and felt empowered to be herself. She died aged 23 last week due to a diabetic shock, and while mourning her, this song brings back memories and experiences. I hope others are inspired by this song as she was.
I've always liked her, but for some reason I didn't hear this song until 2019. I'm thankful I did, as it's a masterpiece! A very clean, very pure sound, stripped down, almost like a free-form jazz ensemble.
Suzanne Vega is a truly gifted singer/song writer who masterfully captured all of the depth, alternative spaces, and freedom of spirit & expression that existed for so many of us that were teens in the 1980s. And her music has stood the test of time ❤
My best friend and I scrimp and saved ever last dollar to see Suzanne at the Auckland town hall when we were 15, so that's like 96, it was the last gig on her world tour, we hitched hiked there, lol , she was so amazing, and the band was just awesome, same guys in the video I'm pretty sure, were both musos, although my mate Lyle isn't with us today, :( but thank you Suzanne for the amazing music
She’s great, but in my opinion Karen Carpenter, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Maria Callas, Dolly Parton, Bessie Smith and Emmylou Harris may be better.
Her music has it all, nice jazzy feel you can dance to, her lyrics are pure poetry, and her completely unique voice that glides along on top of the song.
One of the best in the 80's from the motion picture Pretty in Pink. wow! this song is so awesome for me. one of my playlist until now 2014. Suzanne Vega songs never dies.
I think this was the first song I ever heard by Suzanne Vega on the radio way back in 1986. I loved her vocals, and have been a fan of hers ever since. I've even seen her Live twice. Once in 2005 and again in 2010. Both great evenings.
Such a simple song but it got stuck in my mind, and it took me years to realise what she meant, not just to the left but also having been left, and not just of center but also off center. It's poetic, and I guess you've to live through it to get it.
This song stands the test of time for sure. After 30 years, it looks as fresh as when it came out. Suzanne Vega and Joe Jackson created a masterpiece together.

Ah, the old days. I walked into Sam the Record Man, and the clerk said, ‘you’ll like this’, and handed me the album. He was right, of course.
She is in her 60s now. I'm 59. Still haven't encountered an artist or woman quite like Suzanne Vega. Singular. Eerie voice. The 80s encapsulated.
Agreed still one of my favorite❤🎉
Seen her live las year, small venue just accompanied by one dude on guitar. sublime!

Eerie? That’s one way of putting it
My favorite thing about Suzanne is how effortless her singing is.
@Da Co can you just sing only one song of her? she is not talking" she is singing in her own style.
Yes, like Paul Simon she always sounds like a child singing...
Totally

One of the most beautiful female voices in popular music.
That's why she was the first MP3.

I find your claim difficult to argue with. Her voice is most soothing
Such perfection for the ears. What a forgotten treasure she and her songs are.
I'm a metal-head (thrash and death metal) and I still think she kicks ass. I miss being a kid in the 80s. Such a special time.
4 mates i knew over my life who liked heavy metal would also listen to classic music.
Same. I love this song so much. I can never hear it without feeling 16 again. I'm 54 now. Feeling nostalgic lately.
Grind core head, here, yeah ... Suzanne
Just shows that we metal heads like talent rather than fashion!! Good is good.
Suzanne is delightfully peculiar. i love how she turns moments into full and detailed stories, set to music.
Not really peculiar. Just her writing style.

Suzanne Vega is so pretty, such a natural beauty and a remarkable talent for song writing and singing.
Suzanne's lyrics are definitely out of the ordinary. I also like the strong drum lines.
just a great song, just exactly what you feel when you're not "part of the crowd"

If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip
When they ask me
"What are you looking at?"
I always answer
"Nothing much" (not much)
I think they know that
I'm looking at them
I think they think
I must be out of touch
But I'm only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you
I think that somehow
Somewhere inside of us
We must be similar
If not the same
So I continue
To be wanting you
Left of center
Against the grain
If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip
When they ask me
"What are you looking at?"
I always answer
"Nothing much" (not much)
I think they know that
I'm looking at them
I think they think
I must be out of touch
But I'm only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you
Wondering about you
Life on the outskirts,in the fringes, left of centre is good.
