that's because the die is the same. The desktop 3070 consumes 70 watts(around 40%) more power than the laptop 3070 ti(they have exactly the same specs, same core count, memory etc) yet the laptop version is only 5-10% slower. Although both are important, difference in specs matters more than power consumption.
Most of the differences are because of the CPU and RAM config, not actually cuz of the RTX 4060.
More so at 1080p, yes I agree with you, but at the same time, it kind of is what it is. I did my best to match the CPU/RAM, so that's just a legit difference between the platforms. Even so, the FPS gap is WAY higher when commparing 4070/4080/4090 laptops and desktops.

@@bulletpunch9317 yeah I think mouse should be excluded from both, because both need it. The desktop needs speakers though, and that's a few more dollars at least, depending on how good laptop speakers are.

Great video. I just ordered a 4060 laptop and while I agree the prices for a 4060 laptop are a bit high right now, it makes sense if work demands it. You can't carry your desktop everywhere and if you're gaming on the move, a bit of compromise isn't bad.
What did you get and for how much?

Lenovo 4060 Laptop is $1400 CAD and a prebuilt desktop is $1400 CAD. It's actually the same price for me.

I would really like to see the gap between CPU performance lowered when doing these comparisons, while it's probably not possible to make the performance 1:1, the desktop chips can always be downtuned to approach the performance in the laptops. A couple of Single and Multicore benchmarks can verify these differences. That would make the comparisons so much more reasonable. I'm sure cyberpunk in this test performed better on the desktop just because the CPU was better(as it's a hugely CPU dependent game) we saw the performance gap narrow at 1440p because it was no longer CPU Bound there.
But you wouldn't want to use a 4060 1440p so point is mute I'd say.
moreover older gen cpus/chipsets....of which IMO these 300$ gpus are marketed towards ppl upgrading from "OLDER GEN" gpus.... meanwhile the bottleneck aspects of how zen2 and older non K intel chips perform with more modern GPU's esp when paired with something like 3200mhz ram. Or c18 ram. Equates to having a 4070 desktop yield 4060 fps....due to these bottlenekcs...or the only way end users are going to see the Frame yields of a 4060 with modern cpu/chipests....is if they buy/bottleneck a 4070 or 7700xt...the sad truth about waiting for future generations to justify a "GPU" upgrade....will just wind up being a 15-30% bottleneck.

given the difference in specs you mean, unlike higher class GPUs of this generation, 4060 laptop and desktop are speced exactly the same. Just an example laptop 2080 consumes 70 watts or so less than the desktop version, yet desktop 2080 is only 10-12% faster on average at 4k(where there is 100% GPU load).
4070M, 4080M and especially 4090M have drastically worse specifications compared to desktop versions, hence why the difference is huge. Basically, they should be named a tier lower to match desktop GPUs specifications like cuda cores, vram amounts and memory bus.

@@TabalugaDragon you have to look at the whole context here... 4090 is more than 70% faster than 3090, meanwhile 4060 is only 15% faster than 3060 and even loses in some cases, which is infuriating.

Sure the laptop 4090m is much faster, and it would be much closer to the real desktop 4080 it's based on if Nvidia kept naming honest. 20-25% difference to be precice. Naturally, the lower end ones like 4070 would be even closer. Could as well be 5-10%, easily.

So, at min 0:17 I can say about performance comparison: 4090 Mobile = 4070 TI desktop, 4080 Mobile = 4070 desktop, 4070 Mobile = 4060 TI desktop, 4060 Mobile = 4060 desktop, 4050 desktop versione isn't announced yet but 4050 Mobile is available (of course VRAM in some cases are different, cooling system is different and also electric Watt usage is quite relevant)

If Nvidia was honest with names and specs laptops and desktops would be MUCH closer together, like in case of this 4060.

This voltage limit on the laptop version, is that something that can be updated in the future? When the tech is there?
I think the laptop 4060 has more L2 cache which can explain the Cp77 numbers, that game likes memory bandwidth.
Bought a zephyrus g16 with 4060, its so fast compared to my old 1060 omen. The portability of a laptop is the main reason why I got it. Even if for moving around the house and playing in the same room as my wife while she’s on her desktop. I dont know if at this stage I would ever go back to owning a tower.
It's crazy, I just watched a few of your videos to compare the 4060 desktop to the 4080, and 4090 max q laptops, and for a laptop to outperform a desktop is amazing imo. I know the specs are different and vary, but still very impressive. Thank you so much for your videos Jarrod 😊

I look at these and I think, they compliment each other. I would rather have two able systems rather than, to have one or the other, even if I could then, jump up a tier. My Desktop build would probably get a 3060ti or RX 6700 though.

If it's the HX CPUs, probably not.
Why you did not include the frames per watt graphs?
4060 Laptop has a bigger 32MB L2 cache, while desktop one has only 24MB.
This is actually means a lot for RTX 40 Series GPU, these lacks VRAM bandwidth.

Hey mate i think you should do another reveiw on the gp66hx 12ugs i just got mine as it was on sale and it rips. I7 12800hx, 2x8gb ddr5 rams, rtx 3070ti 8gb, Oled 240hz 15.6 screen, steel series rgb keyboard, the charger is a 330w brick, they also come with thunderbolt port aswell. tell ya what got a good bargain at $2200

Would have been nice to see the laptops 4060 memory overclocked to 17gbps for at least a few games, just to see if that would actually match the desktop chip's results. Just curious since my own 4060 laptop handles a 17gbps oc no problem.
the only big differences in this comparison were in games with huge amount of fps, meaning they were bottlenecked by the CPU. The other games were so close that I don't think overclocking memory would make a noticeable difference. Maybe a couple % tops.
Laptop bottlenecked by cpu brother. Thats why in 2k its not as big of a difference
yeah but most ppl IRL actually looking at 300$ gpus are probably upgrading from an older gen GPU...on an already oldergen/platform which will inhernetly bottleneck any higher tier gpu as it is. Its almost like marketing the budget/on sale 4060 laptop price segment towards these End users/older platform gamers. If you already own a mouse/keyboard and monitor IMO id rather go with a 4060 laptop bc in 2 years its going to sell for a better return than a MAJORLY dated zen2 or non k older intel desktop with a 300-400$ modern gpu which will also depreciate near 200$ by then...bc the newer "entry" range cards will no doubt dumpster the 4060 and 7600xt-7700xt as it is...to a point where ppl still arent buying these new GPU vs second hand ampere/big navi cards. Paired with the caveat of the inherent bottlneck older gen hardware already brings to the table/budget/diminishing returns. Theres really no reason to buy a newer/option if you have an older rig....much better off aiming for a TIER higher/older gen card to mitigate the bottleneck/fps yields as it is. During the paper launch 2020-2021 era a 5700xt was selling so high used....and gtx 1070ti were going for 400$....it only took 2 generations but now you can find that performance NEW for much cheaper than those cards were selling for used...and so on into future generations. AMD/NV did their homework on crushing owners of previous gen cards now that they both offer "cheaper" cards that lowered the price of the 2nd hand markets/options considerably. It forced me to sell my 3070 NOW while the 300$ 4060 is performing around its range...before it goes down even more on the 2nd hand market in the next months-coming year. Its just the shape of gaming landscape these days.

Is it possible that the CPU in the laptop is throttling?
The 13900K can use 125W (253W), the 13900HX only 55W (157W)! The 13900HX probably clocks lower, which would explain the big differences in some games.

RTX 3060 6 GB VRAM laptop and 12 GB VRAM desktop card had similar differences too.
The RTX 4060 laptop and desktop at 115W excluding dynamic boost makes sense why there was a small performance difference here.

Dear Jarrod or any other person, I really need help from someone because I am very worried. I just bought a brand new Legion 5i pro 3070 with i7 12700h. I struggled getting all windows 11 updates, but after some time I managed to do all windows 11 updates, bios or system updates thorugh lenovo vantage as well as getting the latest nvidia driver through geforce experience. My gpu working mode is on hybrid and I dont have issue with game performance. However, it happens quite frequently after running a game for 2 mins, for example queing for a PUBG match and dropping from a plane, the laptop freezes and then the legion shut downs and restarts. I dont see any performance or temperature issues, as also this happens in beginning of games as well. The laptop is brand new and as Ive said i have all the updates done. I really need help.

It's easier for performance to be closer to each other at the low end because the desktop die is smaller and it's easier to approach that size for laptop.
The good news is that for 1080p gaming laptops are more than capable of excellent performance without needing a crazy amount of power consumption. The NEXT gen, or current gen using AMD CPUs the CPU power consumption will be low for gaming so the GPU will get a generous amount of power and you won't need a monster laptop.
The 1% lows will be better for next gen also, or even current gen laptops using AMD/4060 combo might also have better 1% lows once again because the CPU doesn't need as much power.
But, what is this July and there's a lack of AMD laptops?

Hi jarod. I have a problem with my legion slim 5 which uses rtx 4060 but i cannot use the graphics in ultra setting. If i use it, it will randomly crashed from the game. Is it common for the 4060 or is it the games that dosen’t support the rtx??😅
most likely a heating issue...of the heating system often at times in slim builds...shared heatpipes...and an issue managing thermals as well as pumping wattage to the cpu+gpu respectively depending on the game/engine/load. Any time you need a slight "sip" more of wattage be it 5w-15w to cpu...you drop that envelope offered to your GPU...which already leads to spiking/ and 1% low aspects. Add things like v droop, or menu fps/wattage vs in game...and you can easily YIELD crashing/reboot/voltage/over voltage scenarios due to how these systems inherently operate/run modern gaming loads. SLIM builds often have these inherent issues among bigger problems like soldered ram in the case of asus zephyrus builds per ex...or even worse shoddy liquid metal application from factory bricking your system XD. If that slim has liquid metal...this could also be a potential reason your crashing...bc its seeping out onto your main board/gpu vram and this has been widely regarded as a problem in this landcape.
It’s not heating issue, I have the same laptop. That’s probably a hardware problem and he needs to get it replaced. The Lenovo slim 5 may have “SLIM” in its name but it is not actually slim. It’s a beefy thick chassis laptop. It’s even thicker than the Asus ROG G16 (2023). My legion slim 5 has never overheated or experienced any cpu thermo throttling. Again pick one up, it’s a big 16in 5lb laptop. It’s not one of those slim MacBook style laptops. It’s a full powered TGP 140W 4060 GPU. Two upgradable ram slots and SSDs.
This reminds me of the Desktop 1060 6gb vs a fully powered Laptop 1060 6gb as it was closer in performance than you might think and it boiled down to CPU horse power at the end of the day back during the hay day of the GTX 1060.
the issue I have is that both the laptop and the desktop can play any game at high settings at 1080p with mostly above 60fps, how much more power do you need is the question? Like if you really want to maximize performance you can lower the settings to get better fps, and the laptop's mobility can not be understated, if you ever need to game anywhere other than your specific room at your house you will need a laptop, plus your laptop can act as your pc as well. it is just so much more versatile
Honestly the biggest problem with laptops has always been heat dissipation. We still just get too dang hot to pull the power draws consistently to perform. Idk if liquid cooling is the answer or we just have to wait for lower tpd components that can offer high performance. Not that far off I think

I own acer nitro 16 rtx4060 Ryzen 7840hs after basic undervolt and overhaul I know u can't get better than that with a monitor. My laptop has a QuadHd display 500+ nits it is one of the best displays I have ever seen among laptops can you get something close in that price range? I don't think so.
So should I buy another 40 series laptop I have a acer nitro 5 and has had issues with it already I had a gigabyte 3070 previously that model had no issues compared to the new 40 series

When I was in highschool I grew up in a poor family where all I had was a mini laptop provided by the school I ran ps2 games at 5-15 fps. Honestly to me 1440p is overkill so I'm okay with resolutions under 1080 with medium to low settings. 4060 sounds perfect since it's not too cheap but also not to expensive.
Need test 4070 laptop vs 4060Ti desktop.
It’s obvious from the architecture that the lower end nvidia parts are designed for low power usage, but this kills the performance as a desktop GPU as it means it doesn’t scale up, especially to higher resolutions.
while still pushing a bottleneck to anyone on older cpu/chipset platforms now feeling coerced to jump towards a new platform....or a new kit of ram on top of their "GPU" upgrade budget. When ppl have to buy a 4070 or 7700xt to get 4060/7600xt frame yields with their older gen hardware...to me it has to come as a STING to those end users.

nope. desktop 3060 has twice the vram. So in years it'll get way better than the laptop one for ultra quality textures. It already is in some games.

4060 have dlss3, so in about 2-3 years, when 3070 will have ~30-40 fps in AAA game, 4060 will have about 50-60, cuz of frame generation. P.s. that's my opinion, I might be wrong

If you're buying brand new, 4060 is the way. However, you can find 3070 laptop for really cheap used.
@@brokenjessssssssusnot that simple... The experience of input lag will be that of 30-40fps and there's many settings to play with (DLSS2, rt) to get an acceptable experience and 8gb VRam will be a limiter to both.
DLSS3 is not real frames!
3070/Ti can be had really cheap new as well.
Go with whatever has the better deal IMO.
I place subjective higher value on the original price point of a laptop too, quality of materials and engineering is why I will never again touch anything in the budget segment.

Depends on what kind of settings you demand, most laptops these days have custom fan curves so you can tweak them to not be 100% duty cycle
I got a cheap Aorus 15 and it can run the 130W 3070Ti on less than max fans keeping it

he explains it in the video. 4060 laptop and desktop are basically the same GPU. While the laptop 4070 uses a GPU the same as the desktop 4060 ti(which is FAR worse than the desktop 4070). So it's basically because Nvidia is greedy and scammy.
Finally they are back to being as close like they did with 10 series GPUs
only the 4060... the ones above are a scam and are named 1 tier above their desktop counterparts

In my country Rdna2 cards are still overpriced. 4070 is still cheaper than 6800 non xt. So 4070 is way better choice in my case. ✌️

depends on a laptop. If it's a Legion 5 pro with a 3070 ti vs something like TUF A15 with a 4070 then definitely the first option. Depends on your personal needs, really.
I prefer not needing any of that AI tech that not every game supports than being up-to-date on the latest and greatest AI tech. If nVIDIA could give us “essentials” versions of cards that just has DLSS and G-Sync support at most that would be great. AMD exists but I heard that they haven’t been doing so well either.
Imma wait for 50 series and praying that it’s better at the consumer-grade end or get a 30 series card. The 4080s and 4090s marks the place where bang for your buck matters the LEAST.

An excellent video, we appreciate that you tested so many games. RTX 4060 Laptop is really good. I say that if anyone wants a better graphics card than that, they should buy a desktop and not a laptop. But RTX 4060 laptops are a good deal now.

I think the best device this year could have been the ryzen 7940hs and rtx 4080 laptop.
Basically a steam deck and desktop pc with rtx 4070 for $2000.
The few options we have with amds integrated igpu is annoying.

laptop 4080 = desktop 4070

laptop 4060 = desktop 4060
@@jipeh laptop 4090 is literally a desktop 4080 with slower vRAM and half the power consumption. It can't possibly have desktop 4080 performance. Jarrod's tech compared them and the laptop version is arouns 25% slower, so around 4070 ti level. But has 16GB of vRAM like desktop 4080.
@TRC_WA Matter of preference. I don't use desktops anymore and felt the rtx 4090 laptop both in performance and extra vram was worth it. Probably won't be a laptop 50% faster for 4 years.
But my main point is not having rdn3 integrated GPU in all laptops is annoying because you could literally convert any laptop into having huge battery life instantly.
Plus if you go with the 4060 laptop you can also overclock it and make up most of that difference in performance

Not possible, all the fps benefits are from CPU clockspeed so, you cant boost that much in laptop.
@@vmafarah9473 what? in a gpu bound scenario the frame rate is depedant on the gpu. i do it on my laptop all the time and consistently get a 10-15% increase in performance. im talking about overclocking the gpu not the cpu
