I agree, the square pegs are a pretty neat touch to the work! This channel is this first I've seen do it, so it's new to me!

Cool thanks! Something we used to do at the first Cabinet shop. I worked in back in the 80s… Wasn’t sure it would work with Oak but no problem and I think it’s a nice touch..

How nice: Two 'old friends' that Jon introduced me to on his channel perhaps 6 years ago: Waterlox (protected in its can by an inert gas after use) and WoolLube, used with some very fine steel wool. What a nice project.

I love the idea of using spray lacquer and the square pegs are a definite improvement over the round ones. Simple project with many good tips, thank you

I love just the color of amber shellac on woods like Douglas fir. It turns the wood a beautiful rich honey color.

Very nice project! The white paint "highlights" are pretty unique; neat touch. Also like the square pegs detail.

Very nice project Jon! I really like using natural de-waxed Shellac as a finish which can be reapplied down the road as needed.

Thanks Steve! I like shellac too … reminds me of when I first started Wood Working… A long long long time ago😂👍

Great work, Jon. Love the square peg action. Better than hammering in the fake ebony plugs. Thumbs up. Back to Iowa and my shop tomorrow. Talk to you soon.

Thanks Chuck! I’m sure Florida was nice but it’s always good to get back in the shop.
      Have a great weekend!

I also prefer the warmth that an oil-based finish brings to the wood - but often forgo it for a water-based finish for ease in building up coats and ease of clean-up. After years of this compromise - I have really come to like the Total Boat Halcyon -Amber as a good compromise. However, I may have to try the shellack/poly combo. BTW - in recommending your channel to a good friend of mine - not only did I describe all the things I have learned and the accessibility of your projects - I told him you have got to be the best-dressed woodworker on UA-cam.

Thanks! I like the halcyon too … good strong finish for interior work. I finished my wife’s White Oak desktop with the shellac Halcyon combination, and it turned out really good..

I use gloss spray lacquer, too, but you know what I use to knock down the nibs? Plain, brown paper from a paper bag. It knocks down the nibs and burnishes the surface to a nice, smooth finish.

I’ll have to try that, Jeff over at today’s craftsmen was just telling me the same thing👍

I’ve messed around w/ both water and oil based finishes. I prefer oil based. There’s something to the penetration and sheen to oil that just works better than water imo. Thanks for sharing, love playing around with oaks. 🤙

I agree, It’s really hard to get that deep warm color with the water base.

Finish turned out incredible, what size tip do you run when spraying lacquer on the turbine sprayer?

The bench looks great. What about using Zinsser Shellac based primer as that white coat. Then spray on the water-based varnish? Will that bubble too? Just a question. I prefer your spray lacquer solution of the three.

That’s a good idea! I didn’t think of it… and the bin primer is kind of a nice warm white color. Thanks ! 👍

Jon, what size needle did you use to spray that lacquer and what fan setting did you use....if you can remember. Thanks.

I’m using the Fucci Q5 system the fan set a little less than halfway with a 1.3 tip

Awesome job Jon, looks amazing. What was the reasoning behind using the primer just to give it a more weathered look? I asked the same question on today's craftsman but I guess you're the guy to ask...🤘🤘🤘

Thanks Dan! Just to highlight the imperfections in the wood… Kind of giving it that once painted refinished look.

1.500 USD seems a bit steep for a reclaimed wood bench
