I don't know if anyone will see this, but an additional option to add some security to keep the camera attached and protect the camera are "cages" made by companies like SmallRig. These are exactly what they sound like - a milled aluminum cage that securely holds the camera inside and protects it from bumps on the outside. They generally provide multiple mounting points and offer some additional points to attach a safety tether or to attach the camera in a different orientation. Reasonably priced also! I'm also a fan of purple lower-strength Loctite when I want some insurance that a threaded connection won't wiggle loose, but also won't require heating or crazy torque to get it to release.
Paul, I want you to know, even though it only shows up as one "like", I liked this video three times. SUPER useful. I'll look forward very much to the audio cable and ND filter information!
I purchased the mount from "mypilotpro". I will try it out soon. In NE and weather not so good lately. It does seem sturdy and I plan to connect it to my tiedown eye. I plan to use a gimbal inside my cockpit with many different mounts I have. I use Gopro's and my latest is a Session5 it's really small, love it. Alos purchased a cable for inside mic sounds, looking forward to using that. Thanks for all your vids. Awesome.
As one of the members of the world's largest Cessna fleet operator, (think 550+ red/white/blue airplanes), we tried the double sided tape method to support the Garmin Virb. This camera incorporates coordinates into the picture, so the camera must see the GPS constellation (read: wing leading edge) . After losing a few, we gave up on the tape and are awaiting a new, 'official' solution. To be fair, the VIRB, in its case, has more than 6 sq in of surface area. If you go this route, be sure to have a return address inside the case.
"After losing a few, "?? WTF?? Do your FAA contract employers know THAT? Anyway, why would you want a return address on a cheap camera that falls off an airplane and kills someone or dents a fancy car? Maybe don't attach a camera PERIOD unless its foolproof or has a backup cable Mr BFD 550+.
Hi Paul. Thank you for the video. I just bought a jobi mount. I think an interesting video would you interviewing the popular aviation youtubers like SteveKinevo (Miami), Flight Chops, CaptainMoonbeam, JerryW, GaryWing, Premier1Driver, to name a few. Some ride longs with interviews would be interesting. Thank you again for your informative videos.
The part of this video where you use the scale at 6:02 has been instrumental for me. Today I successfully mounted a gopro onto a belly of a q400 and flew across the ocean from Vancouver to Victoria and back. I didn't climb higher than 4000 feet and my speed didn't exceed 240 knots or so and I use the sticky mount straight onto the paint and later peeled it off with a credit card. My question is, after I've peeled it off, how sticky is the mount and can it be used again? I'm hesitant to use it on an exterior surface for fear of losing my camera but perhaps a lower risk position?
I thought I was the tape everything master. I was mistaken. The painter's tape under the gaffer's tape is definitely going to be useful. Now I just need an airplane.
I really enjoy (and learn from) your videos. Question? What does the FAA think of these cameras? Removing/replacing screws or suction mounts to attach (external) camera mounts? Liability if a camera falling off (considering the camera itself provides video proof) including injuring someone on the ground? What did you consider to be the cameras pressure at 100? 150? Etc... I know that we just can't toss something from an aircraft without FAA approval. External mounted cameras seems to be a grey area for me.
Thanks for this video. I bought the mypilot ones. Cant aait to try them out. Do you have a video on favorite angles to shoot? I know you said one was boring just curious if you have any tips on better angles
@@BaronPilot I ordered the thing straight away. when you messaged me my heart sank i was like damn i bought the wrong thing. after looking at the site, i don't own my own aircraft right now and i don't think id be able willing to pay to put that on someone elses plane. the mypilot one looks good as i know there are tie downs on all the rentals. Thank you for getting back to me. When i get my own plane one day. I will Def get something like that.
Max Sperlich no no no I didn’t mean you ordered the wrong thing. You ordered a good mount. Just letting you know the alternatives and additional mounts available. Don’t worry you will be happy.
Probably been mentioned but remember that an aerodynamic antenna generally needs a doubler to beef up the foot print, so be very careful where you connect your camera, especially the ones that have a longer arm. Don't be surprised if your camera has gone along with a section of skin that has opened up like a bean can when you land- just saying. :)
I mount cameras external with screws. No way I trust an adhesive solution. Also, my interior suction cup mounts keep falling off. The best thing is to spread a little clear silicon caulk on the cup, but its a pain to get off again. I have continuing issues with both camera shudder and displays that roll to black. Anyone else with these issues? Whats the solution?
The problem with outside mounts is making sure they are on a solid surface that has no give on it. Otherwise you get that jello effect. That's the key.
Hi Paul. Well if it sux to be you, that's OK! Maybe I can be you, if, well, you want some time off or something! I'm used to doing it the hard way, hanging out of a plane or helicopter with a 60,000 dollar, 26 lb. camera! Your videos are great and I plan on retirement soon. Soooooo, if you do want help......👍
Just wondering if somebody checked the maths. Is it really just 2lbs of force the mount has to withstand? I found a reddit discussion and plugging in 150mph (for a GA Single Engine) gets me closer to a bit over 9 lbs. Any thoughts? Here the link www.reddit.com/r/aerodynamics/comments/hcwe7h/calculating_wind_force_on_a_gopro_max_mounted_on/
In Europe, if you mount something to a plane, it has to be certified. If you don't do that and you have an incident, you'll not be insured because the airplane was not airworthy. Also you might get a fine from the aviation autorities when they find your footage online. Having sayed that, almost everybody just does it. But I work for a large historical flight foundation (25 planes, 250 volunteers) and the aviation pro's within our club who know the law strongly advice us never to mount a camera on the outside. Is this different in the USA or is it a grey area?
Well, the way you mount cameras does not take the airflow into consideration. No one cares about the speed, but the rudder efficiency is a critical point. I would not mount the camera anywhere in front of the control surface.
Imo This is the most comprehensive mounting video on UA-cam. Thanks!
Great video. Have been searching everywhere for these answers and you just answered them all for me 10 minutes! Thank you!
My Pilot Pro mounts are great!! They are the only exterior mounts I use on my airplane. Rock solid even at 200kts!
Saw this comment. Ordered.
The Tie down one is just a brilliant idea !
Thanks for the tips. Mounted my gopro and took it up 12,000 feet yesterday over Nashville for the total eclipse!

Lots of new products since 2016 ... maybe time for a new version of this video?
I've been wanting to see solid mounting options for months! Thanks!

I've been contemplating on mounting a GoPro on the outside of the plane. This video just helped my decision thanks :)

For the joke with the driller and dry wall screws you definitely get a thumbs up :-). Great video!

great job! looking forward to setting up cams in a C172 and begin to document my flights!!

Well done. 👍 Last time I took just a suction mount. And it did really fine.

very nice informative video, thanks.
Thanks for the video! Is there a way I can find out if it’s approved to use in the UK?
Mount recommendations rocked and the useful tips!
Superb video Paul. Thank you! From one of your old students :-)
outstanding video and content....forever there are always people asking how they can mount a camera to the planes they fly..
Great video!
Always learning from your videos, thanks! PLEASE, the audio to camera solutions soon !
Dental floss gets those mounts of no problem. Gets those sicky wall hooks off the wall too if the tab rips.
found this video really helpful!!!
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you. Well done.
Do you guys know up to what speed these kinds of mounts can hold onto the plane?
Very nice..Thank you. Fly safe always..Happy Holiday to you...
Looking forward to the audio recording video,
I'd like to be able to have intercom on Facebook live stream.
Great review, thanks!
Thanks Paul!
Very useful video. What are your thoughts w.r.t. incorporating Safety wire on the RAM Mount knobs and locks?
Safety wire is not a bad idea, because those thumb nuts will come lose. It's just as easy to wrap them in gaffer tape, though.
Thanx Mr Bert o' Rally

Max this was three years ago. Checkout the mounts I now have on baronpilotshop.

Max Sperlich I used that one on my tail which is somewhat protected from the wind, but with a metal camera case it’s not going anywhere.

I love this guy!!!
Great video. but audio needs a volume level boost.
what brand of aluminum foil tape do you use?
Thanks.
Do any of those mounts have an STC?
Can we place gopro on the outside of light jet, let say learjet 31a
How many pound it can be resist? And knots ?
What about the FAA/FAR rules on these sort of mounts? No one wants a ramp check...but just wondering

Ha, ha, I thought you were serious with the drill 🙂

gopros come on a plate that can be taped to a wing

I don't think the use of a screw to mount the camera would be considered legal as it then would be considered a permanent addition to the aircraft.
Watching this video with having a plane
Gaffers' tape. a.k.a hundred-mile-an-hour-tape.
7:12
It's damn annoying having a super aerodynamic glider, sure ain't no struts to clamp onto!

You would think the FAA would want STCs on this. Pilots taping stuff to wings is bad.
10 minutes and not a word about safety (of the public down below)?

I know I like to get pluncked in the head by a falling camera off an airplane whilst walking my cat.
More unnecessary junk!
