    I've always thought Yukiko Horiguchi's work on the series is some of the best out there. Her designs have a malleable quality that lends them really well to the expressive animation K-On's known for. One thing the staff at KyoAni gets is the meaning of adaptation. Yamada said this about the changes they made to Koe no Katachi: "If you use the same phrasing in the movie, and just copy over it frame-by-frame, then you have nothing but an ordinary digest of what happens in the manga. If you do that, then it’s useless to make it into a film."

    • @BT405
      @BT405 7 років тому +2

      Well, there wouldn't particularly be any reason to assume that the video would be "gushing" about K-On without clicking on it or knowing that it's Digi's favorite anime. You would know that the author of the video thinks it's a great adaptation from the complete ass manga, but that doesn't automatically mean it's gonna be swarming with fans looking for opinion validation.

    K-ON! is the kind of anime cultured, seasoned, anime veterans can enjoy. It's no surprise then, that newbies, normies, and weeaboos don't like this series as much.
    Edit: Coming back to this comment after 3 years, I cringed in embarrassment. There is a tiny bit of fanservice, but there is not really a male gaze, it never takes a step back to treat its characters like eye candy, K-ON actually respects its character's and their world and they feel incredibly human and relatable to me

    15:57 - THANK YOU!!! I have had this exact same mindset about adaptions for quite a white now, and ever since, have gradually lost my ability to understand why so many people want to argue that an adaption needs to stay as close to the original material as humanly possible.
    You're changing the medium through which the work is being presented, and there are dozens of storytelling techniques that simply can't make that kind of transition. There are things you can do in writing that someone would never be able to properly express in a visual medium, and vis versa.
    I can understand wanting to see your favorite book's world and characters come to life on the big screen, but I have almost completely lost sense for why you would just want the *exact same product* in a different format rather than as something fresh and exciting that still embodies the same things that you loved about the original.

    • @Kriss_ch.
      @Kriss_ch. 7 років тому

      I mean, if you want to understand the opposite view, I can explain why I like adaptations to be faithful. In the case of most anime adaptations I've seen, for instance, the opposite of K-On! happens. They adapt some/lots of it faithfully and then they make up their own fanfiction for the rest of it(Fullmetal Alchemist, Welcome to the NHK), they skip over large parts of the shows they adapt(Kids on the Slope, Genshiken, Berserk) or they add tons of filler(One Piece, Naruto). There's also no guarantee that the animation is any good, so manga like Fairy Tail have amazing art while the anime looks quite bad in comparison(That's also the case for say, One Piece). K-On! is a rare case because it's a dull, shallow manga with relatively little material and detail that an amazing technical studio full of great animators filled out into a whole show. It's only gonna work when the animators and writers involved are even more competent than the original author, and dedicated to improving it. It's not _impossible_(Nomu VS All Might, the best scene in all of My Hero Academia, was almost entirely the anime studio being great), but it's not normal. I watch a lot more anime than I read manga because it's something you can do with friends, but there are very few shows I also read the manga of and liked the anime _better_ than the manga afterwards.

    When "Is the order a rabbit?" aired for the first time, I watched the first episode and found myself got bored by it. A friend asked me about the stuff
    Friend: "I see. So you don't like Moe slice of life anime, huh"
    Me: "I dunno. This feels boring to me."
    F: "Wait, you watched K-On!, right? That's also moe slice of life anime."

    F: "Then, why don't you like this?"

Somehow, I stumbled upon K-On while it's still airing and fell in love with it. Very hard. Mushi-Shi is an incredible example of your adaptation philosophy. The standalone chapters were pretty great as manga, and the anime is shot-for shot the same thing. But they make it look and sound BEAUTIFUL by animating the mushi creatures, incredibly elaborate background art, plus exploring unique music scores and color palettes for every single episode.
    So the manga had the story already, but I truly believe the anime was a great addition because of how it expanded on the MOOD and ATMOSPHERE, which could not be portrayed on silent, black-and-white, pace-sensitive manga panels.

    I literally wrote an entire essay gushing about Natsume yuujinchou, but realized that I had completely forgotten why I was writing that essay, then I forgot what video I had been watching, so here is a fragment of what I originally wrote that is relevant to the video... (I really like Natsume Yuujinchou and i think this sort of displays that fact in a very open and intense way)
    The manga of Natsume Yuujinchou has a very specific aesthetic. It's gentle, wispy, almost dream-like in structure, with a lot of it's narrative told through flashbacks of Natsume's childhood, memories featuring his grandmother, or dreams that deal with Natsume's fears and emotions. The anime, somehow, manages to maintain all of this storytelling through a very close and accurate adaptation. Both Brain's Base and Studio Shuka manage to create episodes that are nearly 1 for 1 from their source material without making the show seem slow paced, or like theyre clawing for more story. I really think it's one of the best adaptations of a Manga to an Anime, with the only really huge, noticeable changes being Natsume's hair and eye color (which are only seen on the manga covers or extra art anyways), and the decrease of Natsume's salt level. It's a tight adaptation, but it still maintains the same feeling that the manga presents.
    Also, I really love how NatsuYuu does the Monster of the Week thing really well, with each story fairly self contained, and each episode a complete narrative arc that rewards the viewer at the end by having no episodes that seem out of place, or that the show would be better without. It's a really good show please watch it there are 5 seasons out with a 6th one coming in April. The first 4 seasons were created by Brain's Base, and the 5th and 6th seasons made by Studio Shuka. The only thing that changes over the course of the seasons is animation quality. Season 2 compared to season 1 is so much prettier in animation, and season 5, after the 5 year hiatus, is absolutely gorgeous in a super subtly and gentle way, with scenes that aren't necessarily breathtaking, but very relaxing and lovely. Anyways, i love it go watch it...

    I didn't know all this stuff about the manga, and it makes me appreciate one of my favorite shows even more. K-On is amazing, and these adaptations and additions really were some of the best parts of the show. I really appreciate how they made a show about a bunch of girls and made it not really fan-servicey, and I'm glad the director and writer took it that direction despite what the manga contains.

    I consume light novels, manga and anime… and i have ti agree with you… just love it when they start improving the story and just like k-on it became a classic… i mean its like a trope now for those who say “but in the manga” bs… dont get me wrong there are really vad adaptations; however, theres also shows that has been adapted well…

    I think that us animators often try out best to achieve the energy that imitates life in our work, but some manga artists do kill it and are very good at doing these things as well. you have artists like One who are great at writing and have crude but fun drawings, it depends on the artists, their execution, and sensibilities.

    This video perfectly sums up why Kyoto Animation is by far my favourite animation studio. They just have so much attention detail; from the eyes, to the backgrounds, to the casting. For instance: in the first episode, you can see the entire main cast in the first minute in the background. If you were to watch it for the first time, you would never notice, but it's as if they new it was so good they knew people would watch it multiple times. Not only this, but when they add things to the anime that weren't present in the manga it's almost always better. Sorry if I'm going off, I took adderall before I wrote this comment.

    It's astonishing that such a simple generic yonkoma with barely any substance at all can be turned into something bursting at the seems with character, overflowing with emotion and personality, one beautiful scene lovingly crafted after the other with a cast of unforgettable characters in an unforgettable world, KyoAni can really just touch anything and make it pure gold

    THANK YOU!!!! K-On! is my favorite anime too! But so many people think it's only a crappy anime about "cute girls doing cute things". ...Well... it technically is... but it does it JUST right. It really touches my heart! It reminds me of all the silly and sweet situations I've experienced with my own friends throughout my life. It shows me how even the smallest and simplest moments in life are just enough to keep me enjoying it and want to make the most of it. I watched episodes once in a while when I wanted to feel at peace with difficult situations in my life.
    I'm so going to subscribe to you now!
    Also, I watched this anime before I even knew what "moe" and "cute girls doing cute things" was. XD In fact, I can say this is the first anime I've ever completely finished watching. Others weren't engaging enough I guess.

      What the [expletive] did you just [expletive] say about Digi, you [pejorative epithet]? I’ll have you know that Digi has done the most for this industry, he's been involved in numerous statistical analysis of anime trends, and has been confirmed as the reason SAO is dead. He is trained in shot composition and he's the top script doctor in the entire UA-cam land. You are nothing to him but just another [pejorative] [derogatory epithet]. He could wipe you the [expletive] out with lyrical prose the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my [expletive] words. You think you can get away with saying that [feces] about Digi over the Internet? Think again, [pejorative epithet]. As we speak now, I am contacting a secret network of hackers across the USA, who coincidentally also love K-On and only disagree about who is best girl, and your IP is being back-traced right now. So you better prepare for a(n) [expletive] storm, [epithet]. A storm that wipes out the [pejorative] [size adjective] thing you call your life. You’re [expletive] dead (figuratively), kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you (figuratively) in over seven-hundred (700) ways, but that’s only with my dick beaters. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of grown men who watch children's shows in their mother's basements, and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your [pejorative] [anatomical reference to posterior] off the face of the continent, you [derogatory epithet]. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your [expletive] tongue. But you dun goofed, and now you’re going to pay the price, you [deity] condemned [epithet]. I will [excrete fecal matter[ furiously all over you and you will drown in it. *Naruto voice* Believe it!

      Depends on how you go into it. If you go into expecting moe trash, you'll be pleasantly surprised. But if you go into with over expectations, it could be a turn off. My advice, it having a blank slate. Minimum expectations to be fair to the show. You'll find it so much better to just see it for what it is and the meaning and symbolism it conveys.

      In many of the K-On! episodes, the characters themselves pronounced "K-On" like Digibro is pronouncing it in this video. The romaji spelling in some episodes and the subtitles would be "keion" when the characters were talking exactly about the club (not about the creative anime title).

    I'm from a family of musicians, and I do love K-On! so much. It's not really about musicians or a story about to become one. It's more Slice of Life and comedy, and friendship. I really like how Yamada Naoko and her staff crafted that boring manga into one of the most memorable series of all time. KyoAni, at its finest, I should say.

    Great vid, Digi.
    I always used K-On(anime) as an example of an adaptation that exceeds the original work, because it doesnt try to go for the same thing as the original, it uses the concept but goes more far than it. for me this is what an anime adaptation should be about, not the spit image of the original content, but an individual piece of work.

    At first I was a bit upset because it doesn't focus on the music aspect too much, and yet somehow I couldn't stop watching. It's cute, sure, but there's just so much detail to enjoy in things like gestures, expressions, emotions... And the jokes are all pleasant.
    What little plot k-on has is replaced with so much emotion, characterization, brilliant interactions, and of course kyoto animation's quality presentation. To this day I'm still blown away by the little rushed walk Ritsu did in season 2's opening sequence. I mean, it's just a walk. A repeated small number of still drawings. And yet I could immediately think, "of course that's how Ritsu would walk!"

    There aren't many anime I can name that have better character designs than the manga but K-On definitely is the biggest example. The cast just pops out and look so damn adorable, whereas the manga... all of the girls look kind of plain in comparison. They aren't ugly, just lacking in what needs to be considered alluring to viewers' eyes.

    I really don't like K-On, but I can totally understand why people like it. I can appreciate it as a work of art. I think a lot of people just believe their subjective lack of enjoyment of it, means that it's over-rated and not good.

    • @Person01234
      @Person01234 7 років тому

      Yes, exactly. Most of the people who attack it are in one of two camps: 1. Never watched it but "hurr durr moe trash" and 2. "I didn't like it which means it's objectively trash".
      I have no problem with people who can recognise that it is a well made, competently put together and damn finely executed show, but just didn't like it because lsice of life isn't their thing, or whatever. But no-one can tell me that K-On is a "bad anime". There's quite a difference between "I didn't like it" and "it's bad".
