Like what you're seeing with the PTM7950 that's become popular. The fact that it's industrial and has a longer life than consumer TIM, yet has better thermal characteristics.
I found these way back in the day on many other electronics. Mostly on old gpus that all had multiple chips, Makes sense because there all different sizes.
Always love seeing you making more and more videos. Just as a suggestion you should make videos like once or twice a week to keep us entertained and for the 360 fans like me! Hope you’re doing well in college and still miss your shop back then!
Hey Josh, does this mean all GPU's that match this criteria are required to have the phase change material when refreshing or simply re-applying the heatsink? Or can newer heatsinks facilitate this change?
No, you CANNOT do that. The Waternoose and Loki CPUs are not pin compatible or even the size physical size. 28x28 BGA for Loki and 30x30 BGA for WN. Put a reliable Rhea on the Zephyr and you have a solid machine.
I've seen similar foil on some early pentium 4 heatsink, plus it had additional layer of thermal paste on it. Probably whoever assembled that PC decided to add it as always..
Hi there. A little off the thermal interface topic, but could you recommend a good source for some Elpis GPUs (X819195)? I have a couple of old xenons Jtagged, I'd like to remove their Y1s and get them reliable! haha
Hey Josh, I've had this Zephyr Test Kit kicking around for a while. Would you be interested in swapping the GPU out with a Kronos or Jasper era GPU? I might be able to supply the GPU from a dead motherboard. I am also unsure which revision of Zephyr it is as well, but as far as I know it should be possible (considering a Xenon can get a 65nm GPU, shouldn't a Zephyr?). I am wondering how much you would charge for both labour and potential parts. I ask this because I am certainly not skilled enough to do a GPU and or PCIe conversion. No pressure if you don't want to however :). Also great vid!
@@Josh.Davidson I am unsure of which of Zephyr series it is. As far as I remember, the last time I opened the console, it had a low profile GPU heatsink, which might mean it's a Zephyr_A variant. The MFR date is 2009-12-10. I might be able to provide some additional information if needed.
Hi Josh, sorry to keep bothering you, yet here I am. I have a blades xenon running 6717 factory Y1 gpu. I was wondering how simple would it be to swap the gpu out. Would it be easiest if I got an elpis gpu from a repaired xenon and just swapped the eplis gpu onto my blades xenon? or can I just swap any gpu from a falcon or jasper without needing any extra work? Thanks as always

Is there benefits using this stuff on a non xenon? Thanks for the priceless info Josh
Thanks Josh for the in-depth explanation.

Hey Josh, does this mean all GPU's that match this criteria are required to have the phase change material when refreshing or simply re-applying the heatsink? Or can newer heatsinks facilitate this change?
With modern thermal pastes it's not an issue. X360S has paste under thr IHS not a phase change pad.
Damn, an honest Josh W with all these uploads. Love to see it
Hey josh. What's the chance a Zephyr CPU could work on a jasper board? The CPU is pre nxe and able to be jtagged.

I have an HP laptop from 2004 that had the same thing.
I got a question. Y was there so many RROD on the 360? I got 3 and all got the RROD. Even the slim model...
Look up Bumpgate. Was defective manufacturing at TSMC/ASE. Not MSFT's fault.
To say it was a mistake is so ridiculous from a manufacturing point of view, like oops how’d that get in there. Another mystery solved

I do not install him usually. Install Y1 fixed. Elpis am move JTAG CPU over or something.
@@Josh.Davidsonoh so revised Y1 is easier to get ahold of? Idk why I figured Elpis was produced more. Where do you usually get fixed Y1 from?
AliExpress
this is rather interesting as i have worked on about 40 360s and never came across the "tin foil" it was always Thermal paste,
Only very early Xenons had this.

You cannot swap from Falcon or Jasper onto Xenon. I made a whole video on the Jasper situation which explain it.

Yes
@@Josh.Davidson Any fix? It's my childhood one and a lucky corona.

Did you ever find out why Slim consoles have been failing a lot from CGPU failures in the recent times?
No.

❤ Nice video. Well explained.
That TIM on the early heatsync looks very expensive.
It isn't.
When will the xenon library have a tutorial on installing Jasper gpu on xenon mobo?
Once a solution is available which is not sketchy. Not many people are capable of pulling off the rework I did correctly.

do you still do repairs?
Not now, sorry.
I’m only interested, this thing has better thermal conductivity than a regular thermal paste, or worse =\
According to Chomerics, the T557 and T558 phase change pad has a conductivity of 3W/mK. Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 that I use is 5.6 W/mK.
