This week I tried cling wrap! I woodturned a maple bowl, painted the outside and used cling wrap for a worn, marbles look.

First, I love your commentary as you work. So many of the wood-turning videos assume that we know what is being done and why. Second, I am surprised you often work with long sleeves. I was taught never to do that around tools like the lathe. Third, I appreciate that you are willing to take chances. So many of the other wood-turning videos are the same old thing: big piece of wood turned into a bowl. You're willing to try something different. Thanks for your efforts!

    • @PFWoodturning
      @PFWoodturning  3 роки тому

Thanks 👍Most of the time when I wear long sleeves is to protect my arms. Stuff coming off the piece can be sharp or hot (especially with resin). I just try to have sleeves that aren't puffy or dangling. Thanks for watching!

I got a wood lathe last year, and I have been watching all that UA-cam has to offer, but this is the first of your videos I have had the pleasure of watching.
You're also the only person I've subscribed to for woodworking.
I found this very easy to follow, and (nicely enough) very calming.
    Thank you for that.
I'm not sure if that style of painting is for me, but it turned out very well.
    Excellent video; thank you.

What a great technique with the iridescent paints. Will definitely be putting that down on the "need to try" list.
I've been looking at the Jo Sonja paints for a week or two as something to try so will be going there once I have mastered the Intrinsic colours.
Intriguing how a lot of the commentators wouldn't have coloured the outside of the bowl but I think you get the plenty of the grain showing on the inside and it's the contrast between the outside and inside that is the eye catcher here.

  • @thomashester739

Love the bowl .I know some like the wood and maple is awesome but the color was soft and was so easy on the eyes . The imagination could go wild with the colors you could use. Great bowl and ideas

Gosh, it must be the permafrost on my brain, I really think the marbling effect of the paint. Gives the bowl a look like it was carved out of deep blue glacial ice.
I really like that you color outside the lines. If you do not push the boundaries, you will eventually get stuck. In the immortal words of Samual Clemens 'Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.' Keep on swimming

Nice work Peggy, I have the one-way system and it does a great job. The Learning curve is not to steep and its a sturdy device. The biggest issue was getting the system delivered from one way. Mine has four knives and I wanted the system delivered as a complete package. At the time there was some issue in the production line. And it took months to get to me. ( hopefully you won't face that problem ) But once it arrived it was ready to go. Their accompanying video was strait forward and very helpful. I would suggest getting their little grinding jig for the cutters it makes sharpening them so much easier.

Peggy keep on experimenting! While in my decorative painting company days, I used to apply cling wrap to glaze over paint to achieve a very nice leather effect. I don't see why it won't work on wood. I would suggest using a water-base poly over water-base paints so that their curing time/processes will be in sync. Oil-based varnish over a water-base finish is another way to get a cracked/distressed leather effect. I wonder if the interference paint can be thinned enough to use it as a stain or dye to accent the tiger-striped grain.

I like your work very much. The bowl saver is a great idea. I have a One-Way and it is easier to sharpen and replace cutting tips. When I bought one, I found that selling the extra bowls paid for the system. I have friends who bought other systems and found that sharpening or replacing tips were more expensive and more difficult. I am glad I got the One-Way. Keep turning and have fun.

@@PFWoodturning May I ask a question of you? That carbide tool that you use. The one that has the round insert. Does that work "easier" or "better" than a bowl gouge in the radius of bowls? I have some hesitations when it comes to working in those radius's. I turned 2 bowls and a votive candle holder this weekend from scrap pine 4x6" blocks that we burn at work, and making that radius always makes me a bit skiddish... ;) Thanks for any information you can pass on to a newb in that area.

@@PFWoodturning oh, I should mention too, just start with the smallest knife set and then you can determine which others you want/need. When all is said and done its a pretty rare bowl blank that needs larger than the 11 inch. It'll make more sense once you start using it, but you can use different sets for the same diameter bowl, but the bigger the set the shallower the bowl blank will be, so I use the smallest set possible

Peggy, simply fantastic. I thought you were putting different colors on, guess I was wrong. Thanks.

Woodturners, like woodworkers in general, tend to love wood. We may have different judgements about what kind of wood, if any, should be colored, and about whether it enhances or obscures the beauty of the piece. But... if you want to sell the work you produce, it’s the customer, and not other turners whose preferences need to be considered. A lot of woodturners, and even more customers like color. Finding the balance between your own aesthetic intuition and your customer’s wishes is all that really matters. Good job for not just falling into the wood worshipping trap.

Just found your channel and I have to say that you certainly do beautiful work I subscribed immediately and definitely invest in the bowl saver it's definitely worth it especially for the nicer or finer pieces of wood like the figured maple. Keep up the good work I look forward to seeing more videos

Nice bowl Peggy. I use the Woodcut bowl saver, Packard tools sell here in US. I’m very happy with it. I had a 19” x10” deep roughed out piece of Cedar Elm ended up with 5 bowls using just 2 cutters. Takes a little adjusting to get that many, but can be done.

What a gorgeous piece! I thought I was the only who occasionally turns in heels 😂 btw I use the oneway after testing them all. They even sell it on Amazon. Have a great week Peggy!

Beautiful bowl, Peggy. It reminds me of the balloon bowl - kind of same but different.

If I had the tools I'd try this technique. You did a wonderful job on this.
