    JFK consulting and seeking advice from Eisenhower is so humbling, you can hear it in JFK's voice the respect he has for this great man, it's like Luke Skywalker seeking wisdom from Jedi master Yoda.

    Two men who loved America and are working together to prevent a nuclear war. Both of these men were WW2 veterans and know the ugly face of war and its aftermath. Sure wish things were like this today! Just imagine what we could solve and get done as a country. They are showing us there is no "I" in teamwork!

      That was also in a time of American history when MOST elected officials in both parties differed only by name, degrees in ideology and key issues of the day. It was a time when government was about 1/2 the size that it is now and their fingers weren’t stuck in so many pies.

    JFK was very lucky to have had the wisdom of Eisenhower at his disposal at that point in time. Nobody knew the Soviet warfare psyche than Eisenhower, having navigated through it in WWII as an ally, and again as an adversary as POTUS.
    Eisenhower knew which buttons to push and which ones to avoid. You could hear the relief in Kennedy’s voice at the end of the first phone conversation after Eisenhower talked down the potential threat of Soviet retaliation in Berlin. The fact of the matter is that, for all of the sabre rattling, and rhetoric, there wasn’t much taste in the Kremlin for another large military confrontation in Europe. The Soviets had lost between 7-10 million troops over the course of the war less than 20 years prior to the Cuban Missile Crisis, and most of it was at the hands of the Wehrmacht. Imagine the loss they’d have incurred by going up against NATO.

      If the US attacked that site in Cuba I honestly doubt the Soviet Union would have used any nukes because they would be going all out and sacrificing their motherland for a small site, however they would have had to retaliate in some way to meet the equal amount of force that we displayed and so I do believe that they would have attacked at least one of our positions in Berlin and tension would have risen a lot from that but ultimately everything would have subsided
      Honestly I’m glad the blockade worked, no one had to die and everything was fixed

    IDK how long this has been up on YT but there should be millions of plays and thousands of comments. JFK asking Ike if the General thinks that the Russians will “fire these things off” and the calm response “oh…I don’t think they will” from the 5 Star General who led the invasion and liberation of Western Europe in WW2 is a breathtaking and very human moment during the crisis that could’ve started WW3 and ended civilization as we know it.

    "We have a chance to avoid nuclear war, but we better run it past the General first in case it's a bunch of baloney."
    Better times. As terrifying as Cuba was (my 80 year-old father tells me that they really thought it was the end, for a week or so) today could be even more dangerous, something which I'm still finding very hard to believe, but there it is.
    We're back to square one, in other words - only this time no one is talking to each other any more. We're just hurling abuse and shouting each other down.
    How did the poem go? "This is how the world ends: not with a bang, but a whimper"? Well, Mr Elliot's chilling words need to be altered slightly for this damn generation: "This is how the world ends: with a lot of nihilistic self-loathing followed by the biggest bang of them all."

After he left the presidency, Eisenhower was restored to his rank as General of the Army and President Kennedy signed that into law on March 23, 1961.

      Every President who assumes office is inexperienced. Qualification comes with age and natural citizenship, a fairly low bar to hurdle.
      Some were born for the job, some were thrust into greatness and a few didn’t have a clue. A President is only as good as his advisers and his ability to take the best advice and act on it.

I always feel it best to present new history or history from a new perspective with what I'd call "clinical reverence". just present it, as is, wait for the history itself to decide whether it's a big deal. that's just my thinking, though. good job!

    In reality. the Soviet commander in Cuba had his hand on the trigger to fire tactical nuclear weapons as soon as there were signs of a US Invasion of Cuba. Also the Soviet sub commander had nuclear-armed torpedoes. It just goes to show that even great military commanders like Eisenhower can miscalculate and make the wrong threat assessment.

    • @BoldWittyName
      @BoldWittyName 4 роки тому +5

      Tactical nukes against an invasion is very different from full-scale nuclear war, which is what I believe the presidents were referring to. That nuclear sub choose to surface and submit to the USA didn't it? Or was there another sub you are referring to?

    • @jinzhang8241
      @jinzhang8241 4 роки тому +1

      BoldWittyName Tactical nukes will lead to strategic nukes since JFK’s position was any nuke strike will trigger a “full” strategic retaliatory response on the then Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact states. Yes the sub did hold off - but it was very close

    • @cmt6997
      @cmt6997 4 роки тому +3

      In reality, it's not certain what they would have done. If the US had invaded Cuba, would the Soviet Union have risked nuclear annihilation just to save face and triple down on what was already an aggressive overreach in Cuba? Personally I doubt it, Cuba simply wasn't worth it to them.

    • @jinzhang8241
      @jinzhang8241 4 роки тому

      c t I am not sure too. Soviet tactical doctrine in Europe then was to employ tactical nuclear bombs to shape the battlefield. Clearly Cuba was different but it is possible they would have had no qualms using those tactical nukes in Cuba

    • @Bitchslapper316
      @Bitchslapper316 3 роки тому +5

      He was still right. Forget the commander on the ground for a minute, massive invasion forces don't materialize overnight so the chances that commander would pull that trigger were not very high. His orders were given to him by Khrushchev. When the soviet intelligence confirmed the U.S was mobilizing a massive invasion force and were planning to use it Khrushchev retracted that order and stood down instead of starting a nuclear war over an island that did nothing for them. His whole plan was to get a stronghold near the U.S like the U.S had in Turkey and fortify it before the U.S could react. It failed.
      Keep in mind this happened right on the heels of Eisenhower's presidency and the U.S military doctrine set by Eisenhower up until this time was "massive retaliation" and the nuclear missile sites in Turkey were there just for that purpose.
      "Once we become involved in a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union, we could not stop until we had finished off the enemy." There was no point to talking about "negotiating a settlement in the midst of the war," no alternative, therefore, to hitting "the Russians as hard as we could."
      - Dwight D Eisenhower
      JFK later changed this policy.
