Eisenhower always preferred his title as “General” rather than “Mr. President”. For him, earning five stars was more gratifying than being elected POTUS.
Especially since he was one of the few 5 star generals. 5 star generals are only around during times of war. When WW2 ended he was demoted back to a 4 star.

You can tell Kennedy was legitimately concerned about the situation and wanted Eisenhower's counsel about his course of action. It is so refreshing to hear Eisenhower offer his support while urging Kennedy to be cautious. The amount of respect here is something that the current American political landscape hasn't seen for quite some time.
It would be pretty shocking if a President was anything other than "legitimately concerned" about the imminent end of the human species. Although, Donald Trump probably would've waved it off like it's nothing. In fact I'm pretty sure he actually has done that in conversations about nuclear war.

But I think that NATO should have stopped expansion after the collapse of USSR. General of the Army Eisenhower had been reinstated to being listed as Active Service by President Kennedy by this time. I imagine it was done to make it easier to discuss classified and military matters with each other. This also means that President Kennedy is General Eisenhower’s Commander-in-Chief hence the “Sir”. Though it’s obvious both men held each other in such high regard that the rank was not a prerequisite for the respect given.
It’s actually really insane that we have such an important recording like this archived. I don’t know if many of you know, but this phone call was the deciding factor in the escalation towards a possible WW3.

First off, an amazing discourse between two national leaders. Blunt, respectful and concise. Any senior executive's time is concise. Literally to the minute. President Kennedy afforded his predecessor the appropriate courtesy, General. After office, George Washington insisted on being referred to as General Washington, vice Mr. President; after his term this was the custom for military office holders. Also, President Kennedy was asking advice from the former Commander of Allied Forces for the European Theater. All together, both men were gracious, respectful and gentlemanly. I pray our nation returns to this decorum, respect for opposing views.
JFK kept all three of the living former presidents up to speed on the Cuban Missile Crisis as it was happening but he clearly valued Ike's opinion very much, for obvious reasons.

But JFK was under no obligation to speak with him at all. The fact he did, and more than once! Showed how much he respected Ike, and valued his council. And JFK was a CMH recepient, Ike respected everyone who served during the War, but especially those who went above and beyond what was expected of them. It is safe to say they respected one another.

Both became the Commander in Chief and I’m beyond impressed with the wisdom and humility Kennedy possessed to draw upon the council of General Eisenhower. Eisenhower was magnificent providing Kennedy with a few extra considerations while supporting Kennedy’s course of action, and showed pure courtesy and respect to the sitting President. Duty and Service at the highest level is what we got to listen in on.
It's been a long time since we had a real veteran as President, unless you count Reagan's "service" in Hollywood during WWII and Bush II's "service" protecting Texas during the Vietnam War. I don't.

I don't think many Americans really know how little impact the USA had on a pure military scale regarding world war II in Europe. Sure they provided a lot of supplies to the UK, but they "only" lost about 49.000 troops in Europe, all of whom were military personnel. Compare that to the total death toll in Europe alone during that war, which was around 15-20 million people. So the USA's losses were "only" around 0.25%. And the foreign aid was mostly to the UK, who paid back all those loans. The USSR received almost nothing, despite popular belief.

So what I'm saying is that there wouldn't have been much difference if the USA wasn't directly involved in the European war. The impact from the USA came mostly in the pacific, and shortened the war with the landing in Normandy. But by 1944 the Germans wouldn't have been able to hold back the USSR and invasions/trade interdiction from the UK. One can not forget how much problems the UK had caused in Africa, which was already dominated by the allies, cutting off essential oil and rubber resources from the German war machine.

You can give credit to Beta males for watering down America, not to mention destroying the economy. When women are hired to work in, say, the lumber yard of a building supply, or in a sawmill, the prices of lumber will have to rise to cover the cost of the automation and machinery it takes for women to move heavy lumber. I was a 5 year old boy living in Tucson, Arizona when this phone call was happening!! Two great men, both had served in our military, so did my Dad and myself. this is how you learn to respect others more senior in rank, age and position!!
Also, don't forget that Kennedy was only 45 years old at the time. He was incredibly poised and thoughtful in his remarks, especially when speaking with a man of the experience of Eisenhower.

@@Michael15_25 could be the desire to try something new. For the GOP at least, Bush from 2001 to 2008, was considered a bit of a failure following Iraq, Afghanistan, and the economy. Then the Obama years occurred and many who were or leaned to the Republicans sought a change. And why not a change as a outsider such as Trump? They believed it would be a good thing having a outsider come to the white house,one not afraid to make controversy and speak his mind. Of course, Trump himself has only been a business man, unlike Obama and a number of other presidents who have served in the arm forces. Not to mention those who had a education in politics and affairs of state. The system in place worked, ultimately, and that was allowing such a man to become a nominee despite what most people thought about him. Matters are made worse when you have such a figure spouting off strong and harsh words at the state of things, and a population who are desperate enough for change and lack the understanding of the greater state of things, you end up with a outsider like Trump winning.
@@PhoenixFires Eisenhower did not grow up in wealth, far from it. Ike's "wealth" would have come from post-war positions on boards, or actual jobs. His Army retirement would not be enough to be considered "wealth". Kennedy was quite different, he was wealthy by any standard.
I've been told that Eisenhower/Nixon ran their campaign of contest under the slogan "Let's elect some real figures". I can't find the exact quote, but I believe Kennedy &co. paraphrased it for theirs.
I literally just said the same thing to myself. "These are REAL men." Willing to honestly, put the people first and do what was right for the nation, political parties and insider pressure be damned. You can go back from FDR through Nixon and find that these men were all cut from the same cloth, regardless of what you think of their politics......they put their country and countrymen first, and it shows. It is also a large part of why our nation did so well during their times.

@@cdr861532 Nixon was a paranoid, mentally ill person who spied on everyone including himself and sent people to break into the rival party's office just to figure out their campaign tactics. All while he was winning by a landslide in all the polls prior to Watergate, further entrenching just how needlessly paranoid the man was. JFK was a party animal, adulterer, and well-known elite. Johnson was a petty womanizer, used intimidation to win votes, and needlessly escalated Vietnam then placed arbitrary limits on it making the war 200x worse than it needed to be for everyone involved. Presidents aren't patriots or monsters. They're humans. They're nothing to look up to, as power tends to corrupt and emphasize further just how depraved and inept someone is.
General Eisenhower had a lot to offer the President in this brief conversation and both men understood it's importance. The General kept his answers brief, but thorough, and President Kennedy gave him time to articulate his points without interruption. The General knew all to well the enormous pressure President Kennedy was under and did not wish to waste his time. It's incredible to have this part of our history archived and publicly available.

I feel privileged to even hear this recording, regardless of if the matters spoken about are in the past, and the ramifications have already been established, completed and hashed out. This is a beautiful part of yt, it acts as an archive for political history, and is much better accessible than say, the library of Congress.

Fascinating. I got the impression of mutual respect from each man in the way they address each other as Mr. President and General. Eisenhower was obviously older yet still called the president Mr. President and the president still called Eisenhower General despite him having been retired for many years.
I was in the middle of the missile crisis in 1962. I was in the Navy and the captain of the ship (I hate calling it that because it was a reconditioned pre WWII tanker) I was on volunteered us to go to the Caribbean even though we were not scheduled to go. In fact, we were pretty much last on the list. But the captain was striking for Rear Admiral and didn't care about the effect his choice has on a pretty much green crew. We had just gotten back from a shakedown cruise at Gitmo several months before and still didn't have the routine quite set in. So, when we left we found out in the middle of floating around the Caribbean that no one knew where we were. We were not assigned to a convoy but on our own and really didn't do much to refuel many ships. To us, it was pretty much a 45 day vacation. But when Kennedy found out that we weren't even supposed to be there (due to a letter written to him by the girlfriend of one of the men on board) he contacted the captain directly and really reamed him out. It wasn't long after that the captain was replaced. Kennedy showed that he truly was the "Commander in Chief" with that.

Eisenhower would have invaded Cuba if he were president and the Soviet Union would have fired their tactical nukes that we didn’t know about. JFK was able to push back the war mongers.

I know Ike preferred “general”, but something about the interaction feels like that title makes it clear the sitting president is asking for a double check of his strategy from a military general point of view and not so much POTUS point of view. Fascinating piece of history.

It was fascinating to hear both men speaking on the Cuban Missile Crisis of the time. It must have been a very scary time for people right across the world especially as the Americans had already used the bomb twice before to tear Japan to pieces during the ending of WW2.. There's only one word: fascinating. I was born in '58, and IMO these were the two greatest presidents in my lifetime. So, as a conscious , self-aware human being, I have never seen leadership even close to either one of these guys. And if you go back 15, 20 years from this date, you had FDR or Truman. Am not an American but I read so many books from ww1 ,ww2,and up until Eisenhower last term and In my opinion he is by far the greatest general and leader in American history ofcourse I won't count the founding fathers... He is an absolutely an incredible person very wise calm and understanding and by far he is one of my favorite characters of all time his leadership and how he handle crisis is incredible

Ike was a great man and leader! He was perhaps the most underrated President we had. JFK was a visionary and very charismatic. Notice how civil and respectful they are of each other. Traits that are completely lost in politics today.
JFK was as presidential as it gets. One thing he did that I love him for is open up public school gyms during the summer for local youth. Our school had a beautiful wooden floor gym and as a teenager I was addicted to basketball. I spent the whole summer in that gym. It was a Heaven on Earth for me.
the fact we have these recordings is next to unbelievable .. so much history is lost or murky in the unknown .. this type of historical context cuts right through so much of that. we're very lucky.

Eisenhower always preferred his title as “General” rather than “Mr. President”. For him, earning five stars was more gratifying than being elected POTUS.

Especially since he was one of the few 5 star generals. 5 star generals are only around during times of war. When WW2 ended he was demoted back to a 4 star.

You can tell Kennedy was legitimately concerned about the situation and wanted Eisenhower's counsel about his course of action. It is so refreshing to hear Eisenhower offer his support while urging Kennedy to be cautious. The amount of respect here is something that the current American political landscape hasn't seen for quite some time.

General Eisenhower preferred to be addressed as so instead of being referred to as "President Eisenhower" which is surprising since he is a former Commander in Chief of all Armed Forces.

General of the Army Eisenhower had been reinstated to being listed as Active Service by President Kennedy by this time. I imagine it was done to make it easier to discuss classified and military matters with each other. This also means that President Kennedy is General Eisenhower’s Commander-in-Chief hence the “Sir”. Though it’s obvious both men held each other in such high regard that the rank was not a prerequisite for the respect given.

First off, an amazing discourse between two national leaders. Blunt, respectful and concise. Any senior executive's time is concise. Literally to the minute. President Kennedy afforded his predecessor the appropriate courtesy, General. After office, George Washington insisted on being referred to as General Washington, vice Mr. President; after his term this was the custom for military office holders. Also, President Kennedy was asking advice from the former Commander of Allied Forces for the European Theater. All together, both men were gracious, respectful and gentlemanly. I pray our nation returns to this decorum, respect for opposing views.

Eisenhower nearly went to war with the USSR in 1956 over the Suez canal. So he knew too well what JFK was going through.
JFK kept all three of the living former presidents up to speed on the Cuban Missile Crisis as it was happening but he clearly valued Ike's opinion very much, for obvious reasons.

In truth, JFK had tremendous respect for General/President Eisenhower. Yes, Ike preferred to be called by rank, once out of the White House. But JFK was under no obligation to speak with him at all. The fact he did, and more than once! Showed how much he respected Ike, and valued his council. The fact Ike was quick to help showed he was still serving the country he loved. And JFK was a CMH recepient, Ike respected everyone who served during the War, but especially those who went above and beyond what was expected of them.
It is safe to say they respected one another.

It’s an amazing contrast of two leaders. 20 years before this, Kennedy was a young 1st Lt. in the US Navy, and 5 Star General of the Army Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander against Germany. Both became the Commander in Chief and I’m beyond impressed with the wisdom and humility Kennedy possessed to draw upon the council of General Eisenhower. Eisenhower was magnificent providing Kennedy with a few extra considerations while supporting Kennedy’s course of action, and showed pure courtesy and respect to the sitting President. Duty and Service at the highest level is what we got to listen in on.

I don't think many Americans really know how little impact the USA had on a pure military scale regarding world war II in Europe. Sure they provided a lot of supplies to the UK, but they "only" lost about 49.000 troops in Europe, all of whom were military personnel.
Compare that to the total death toll in Europe alone during that war, which was around 15-20 million people. So the USA's losses were "only" around 0.25%.
And the foreign aid was mostly to the UK, who paid back all those loans. The USSR received almost nothing, despite popular belief.

Now despite popular belief, the USSR actually produced the overwhelming majority of their war equipment themselves. Depending on the year, it's anywhere from 99-95% produced by themselves.

I never said the USSR would've destroyed Germany on their own, but with Britain involved they probably would, like I said America didn't have a major impact in the European war.
Mind you, lend-lease does not count as a direct impact, that's just an investment. The UK paid all their world war 2 loans back, I think they made their last payment in 2004.
Now this is important to distinguish, because Germany wouldn't have been able to produce what they did without the trade with other nations like Spain, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Sweden, ...
Not to mention that Spain had multiple divisions as "volunteers" in the eastern front, despite being "neutral". And Romania, hungary and Italy were all also fighting on the eastern front.
So what I'm saying is that there wouldn't have been much difference if the USA wasn't directly involved in the European war. The impact from the USA came mostly in the pacific, and shortened the war with the landing in Normandy. But by 1944 the Germans wouldn't have been able to hold back the USSR and invasions/trade interdiction from the UK.
One can not forget how much problems the UK had caused in Africa, which was already dominated by the allies, cutting off essential oil and rubber resources from the German war machine.
I am genuinely surprised how calm and composed both of these men are in one of the worst crisis n human history. I guess that’s why they are the men that they are.

When women are hired to work in, say, the lumber yard of a building supply, or in a sawmill, the prices of lumber will have to rise to cover the cost of the automation and machinery it takes for women to move heavy lumber. I was a 5 year old boy living in Tucson, Arizona when this phone call was happening!! Two great men, both had served in our military, so did my Dad and myself. this is how you learn to respect others more senior in rank, age and position!!
Also, don't forget that Kennedy was only 45 years old at the time. He was incredibly poised and thoughtful in his remarks, especially when speaking with a man of the experience of Eisenhower.

Then the Obama years occurred and many who were or leaned to the Republicans sought a change. And why not a change as a outsider such as Trump? They believed it would be a good thing having a outsider come to the white house,one not afraid to make controversy and speak his mind.
Of course, Trump himself has only been a business man, unlike Obama and a number of other presidents who have served in the arm forces. Not to mention those who had a education in politics and affairs of state.
The system in place worked, ultimately, and that was allowing such a man to become a nominee despite what most people thought about him. Matters are made worse when you have such a figure spouting off strong and harsh words at the state of things, and a population who are desperate enough for change and lack the understanding of the greater state of things, you end up with a outsider like Trump winning.

All while he was winning by a landslide in all the polls prior to Watergate, further entrenching just how needlessly paranoid the man was. JFK was a party animal, adulterer, and well-known elite. Johnson was a petty womanizer, used intimidation to win votes, and needlessly escalated Vietnam then placed arbitrary limits on it making the war 200x worse than it needed to be for everyone involved. Presidents aren't patriots or monsters. They're humans. They're nothing to look up to, as power tends to corrupt and emphasize further just how depraved and inept someone is.

General Eisenhower had a lot to offer the President in this brief conversation and both men understood it's importance. The General kept his answers brief, but thorough, and President Kennedy gave him time to articulate his points without interruption. The General knew all to well the enormous pressure President Kennedy was under and did not wish to waste his time. It's incredible to have this part of our history archived and publicly available.

The level of respect he has for Ike is something else. He barely beat Ike’s VP to win the presidency. This was an era of decorum and statesmanship. I feel privileged to even hear this recording, regardless of if the matters spoken about are in the past, and the ramifications have already been established, completed and hashed out. This is a beautiful part of yt, it acts as an archive for political history, and is much better accessible than say, the library of Congress.

JFK should have sought Ike's counsel before he (Kennedy) went ahead with the Bay of Pigs invasion, just 3 months upon entering the Oval Office. That's what got him (and the world) into the mess.

We got uhh, Friday night got a message from Khrushchev which uhh, said that he would uhh, withdraw these missiles and technicians and so on providing we did not plan to invade Cuba. We then got a message, uh, a public one, in which he said he would do that if we withdrew our missiles from Turkey. We then, as you know, issued a statement that we couldn't get into that deal. So uhh, we then got this message this morning, so we now have to wait to see how it unfolds, and there's a good deal of complexities to it, uhh if the uhh, withdraw of these missiles, technicians, and the cessation of subversive activity by them, well we just have to set up satisfactory procedures to determine whether these actions will be carried out. So I think that if we can do that, we may find our interests advanced, even though it may be only more one chapter in a rather long story, as far as Cuba's concerned.

K: No uhh, except that we're not going to invade Cuba.

E: Yeah, as I said before Mr. President, these people do not equate Berlin with [unintelligible] with anywhere else. They take any spot in the world, it's just the question is, are you in such a place you either can't or won't resist, so we've just got to [defend?] We couldn't even reach it, so [unintelligible] so they get to, and they probe when you can't do anything, then if they get another place where they think you just won't for some reason rather, why then they go ahead. I think you're doing exactly right on this one, go ahead, but just let them know that you won't be the aggressor, then you've always got the right to determine whether the other guy's [unintelligible].

Fascinating. I got the impression of mutual respect from each man in the way they address each other as Mr. President and General. Eisenhower was obviously older yet still called the president Mr. President and the president still called Eisenhower General despite him having been retired for many years.

I was in the middle of the missile crisis in 1962. I was in the Navy and the captain of the ship (I hate calling it that because it was a reconditioned pre WWII tanker) I was on volunteered us to go to the Caribbean even though we were not scheduled to go. In fact, we were pretty much last on the list. But the captain was striking for Rear Admiral and didn't care about the effect his choice has on a pretty much green crew. We had just gotten back from a shakedown cruise at Gitmo several months before and still didn't have the routine quite set in. So, when we left we found out in the middle of floating around the Caribbean that no one knew where we were. We were not assigned to a convoy but on our own and really didn't do much to refuel many ships. To us, it was pretty much a 45 day vacation. But when Kennedy found out that we weren't even supposed to be there (due to a letter written to him by the girlfriend of one of the men on board) he contacted the captain directly and really reamed him out. It wasn't long after that the captain was replaced. Kennedy showed that he truly was the "Commander in Chief" with that.

Eisenhower built the u.s. interstate system..one of the single most important accomplishments of a president.still has a massive impact down to this day
I think it's very powerful we have presidents working together like this, with all their specialized and worldly experience.

Two war heroes who experienced the the terror of combat and fought against an existential threat to humanity. They were brothers in arms. As a Canadian I respected and admire them both. I weep at the calibre of leadership in the US today.

Jfk was a young officer during the war. He was showing respect and I believe a mindset. I'm glad he was around to give confidence and guidance during the Cuban missile crisis.
I know Ike preferred “general”, but something about the interaction feels like that title makes it clear the sitting president is asking for a double check of his strategy from a military general point of view and not so much POTUS point of view. Fascinating piece of history.

It was fascinating to hear both men speaking on the Cuban Missile Crisis of the time. It must have been a very scary time for people right across the world especially as the Americans had already used the bomb twice before to tear Japan to pieces during the ending of WW2.. There's only one word: fascinating. I was born in '58, and IMO these were the two greatest presidents in my lifetime. So, as a conscious , self-aware human being, I have never seen leadership even close to either one of these guys. And if you go back 15, 20 years from this date, you had FDR or Truman. Where is the leadership now?

Am not an American but I read so many books from ww1 ,ww2,and up until Eisenhower last term and In my opinion he is by far the greatest general and leader in American history ofcourse I won't count the founding fathers...
He is an absolutely an incredible person very wise calm and understanding and by far he is one of my favorite characters of all time his leadership and how he handle crisis is incredible

Ike was a great man and leader! He was perhaps the most underrated President we had. JFK was a visionary and very charismatic. Notice how civil and respectful they are of each other. Traits that are completely lost in politics today.

JFK was as presidential as it gets. One thing he did that I love him for is open up public school gyms during the summer for local youth. Our school had a beautiful wooden floor gym and as a teenager I was addicted to basketball. I spent the whole summer in that gym. It was a Heaven on Earth for me.
And for founding THE PEACE CORPS. There will never be another JFK.
