In this episode of Velocity Labs we buy a $350 Saturn, put new speakers in it, clean the EGR, pass emissions, new motor mount, fix the doors and a bunch of other DIY tutorial projects! This is a station wagon with 5 doors, aluminum wheels and a clean project. We also seafoam the car to make sure we pass emissions. We fixed the check engine lights for P0405 and P1404 - both were fixed by cleaning the EGR.
this is about making a daily driver that can handle snow, rain, hot weather and everything else. it needs to have working AC, good tires, lots of space for hauling cargo and do everything a daily driver needs to do. air conditioning, heat, 4 doors for dogs, people, etc.

I have a 2000 SW2 things a beast love saturns
Those who diss Saturns don't really know Saturns.
Great pick with the 5 speed DOHC antilock brakes and traction control.
I love that little engine. I like the tones it makes when you slowly rev it up. I'm a piano tuner so I really pick up on the harmonics.
thnx! I own a 96 SW2. My wonderful first car. That DOHC L4 is truly unbeatable. You could even say bulletproof. These engines don't die, ppl kill them.
I have a 96 sc2 with the pop ups. Glad to see someone else who likes Saturns.
That’s awesome, I’ve had a 1994 sc1 black, 1996 sc1 black and currently a 1995 sc1 black, my 1996 had 336,000 miles and ran perfect till it was in accident, my 1995 currently had 261500 miles, still runs great
I have a 2002 coup!!! It was my dream car i wish i new how to fix it up better
Let's start a $350 dollar beater car club. I am in the same situation here lol.
Bought my '99 Saturn SL2 automatic with 74,000 miles for $1,500.. now it's up to 95,100 miles took it out on a lot of long road trips love my Saturn ❤️
I have a 1998 wagon same colour but automatic. Paid 500 for it 398k of miles. Runs well still
Nice wagon pickup, looks like an easy car to work on and clearly reliable enough to 200k + miles ! Nice job cleaning that thing up!
Saturns are INSANELY easy to work on / repair. Everything is so simple!
I had a 1996 SW2 & I loved it so much..! Up till the day a dick head rear ended me causing both airbags to go off and because it was 2002 replacing the airbags alone cost more than the value of the car , I couldn’t get my insurance to fix it , never again have I had a car that was so much fun to drive… I love Saturns because if you took basic care of them you could have a car that looked brand new 14-15 years later not many cars of the same year could you ever say that.. thanks to the polymer body panels no dents no rust and thanks to the flex agent they put in the paint , that kept the paint shiny and new looking for all the years I had my car. My wife had a SC1 that was 14 years old and the day she was rear ended The car still looked brand new except for one little scratch on the front bumper and the rear end damage from the jerk that hitter
Once drove a 2001 SL sedan with a stick shift. High mileage and seen better days, but still ran like a champ. Can almost never go wrong with a beater that runs and drives right.
you got this wagon for an excellent price, luckily it didn't need too much work. always had a soft spot for Saturns, this one looks great!
Love my 2000 Saturn SW2. I bought it 10 years ago with 170,000. It's now almost 300,000. Rebuilt engine and a lot of new stuff over the years. I have a mechanic who was a Saturn technician for 15 year and he knows my car inside and out.
Just came across this video. Like others, appreciate the enthusiasm.
Jafro yesterday (via Patreon) and Velocity Labs today. Life is good.
I like the Saturn already. It's not cute like Bugford, or DSMazing, but it's a sub-$thousand working-class car which does the job that needs doing. Gotta respect that.
My 01 sc2 has been fantastic! I live up in Northern Alberta and have decent winter tires. Traction control isn't necessary but would be nice and I bet thats a rare option on a manual! Brass coolant temp sensor, blocked off my EGR and just plugged the connector in, deleted the cats with a few tricks of the trade and ported out the factory throttle body. No issues on premium fuel. Richpins vids are awesome! My Mrs. currently has a long commute for her work and we found a 1 of 1000 10th anniversary edition SL2 auto for 1100 bux for her that just needed my touch. Cleaned the throttle body, new plugs, wires, replaced a coil pack and ignition module, cleaned up the grounding connections too. Alot of people dont realize that the PCM's are designed to run off ground. The better the ground, the better the electronics perform. Minor oil consumption issue but rather than the seafoam route I decided to try zmax in the cylinders overnight. No more oil consumption issues. The SC2 has 310,000kms and is still going strong with no issues and the SL2 10th has 250,000 and just needs a new front bumper cover. 10 mins at pic n pull and done! Best commuter cars ever! Cheers.I have some vids of the SC2 but I'll post up a vid of both of them once the weather is a bit nicer here.
I found one of the 10th aniversary ones in a junk yard and got the head rests to put in my 01 SC2!
Mine is a 1997. I honestly got it half way home before I noticed the Trac button. Pretty cool. I have to do a little work to mine, but having kids these little wagons are super useful.
I rebuilt my DD Saturn SC2 motor 2 yrs ago with an Ebay rebuild kit and she just turned over 25k this week. Great little cars, just keep going and going. Mine has 286600 on her and I rebuilt the engine at 260500. Nice score on your end!
5:18 - Nice lawnmower bro!
Lol I got the same 98 coupe sc1 black. fixed it all up so easy to work on..it's my 6th Saturn. Richpin taught me everything I know too 👍
Without a doubt, the most reliable car I ever owned was a Saturn L300 wagon. I still regret trading it in. Miss those 'Enduraflex' body panels dearly!
I have owned a 2001 Saturn LW300 since new.
It is now semi-retired but served as a daily driver for 15 years and 390 K.
Never failed to start and the only breakdown was a faulty fuel pump relay.
The only thing that doesn't work is the C/D player.
I drive a Saturn Astra daily and it has 273k on it.
Yay bugford, even if only for a second!
I love my sw2
Wow didn't know a Saturn fanatic existed
This car has a cult following now. especially with the manual. Like to find one myself .96-00 are best years . Boss speakers are kind of crap tho . Roof rack is a must . Gas at $5 a gallon this desirable wagon
Build it break it garage is great for saturn how to videos also, he even works at the GM assembly plant.
I have a Saturn just like this but with no TC or ABS and FWIW I think the car is inherently good in the snow, even lake-effect stuff
My 96 has 191xxx. Man, i really want to start a club for the saturn owners that own the DOHC engines.
Nice saturn wagon bro I’m what some might call a Saturn guy lol I hope that things still goin I’m sure it is
I'm still daily driving it, it's the best!
Most beautiful wagon design, top of my list, my urban utility vehicle.
Watching from Australia bro! Thanks for the engine removal video of the subi, I have a 90 Liberty which is what they are called here! Keep up the videos mate
more people should be watching you dude. loving our content. super dope🙌🏽
Aye another Saturn fan
Which state are you in that has emissions testing?
I have a medium red 1996 Saturn SL2. Easy to work on, handles great in snow and 36 mpg.
Colorado! Yep, I love this car. It's my daily and it never lets me down.
Just saw you on road kill. Awesome congrats.
These type of videos are cool to watch very cool to watch
10:15... if it's got 220,000 thousand miles on it and it's still running great why would you even consider a Honda motor? The 1.9 liter in these cars will go 300,000 miles and more no problem... my '96 did and there are numerous '90s Saturn's with that kind of mileage on them.... it's actually a really good engine... I'm sure you were probably just kidding as everyone thinks Honda is the be-all end-all as far as reliability and engines go... But that Saturn engine will give them a run.....👈
easier to boost ;)
Velocity Labs easier to find Boost part specifically for the engine
My 02 Lancer had 231k on it when I sold it. And people always told me to stay away from Mitsubishis. And now they're all I buy
Got any links? I've looked for forged internals for an S-Series and haven't found anything even remotely reasonably priced, but I don't know where to look. Boosting a Saturn S-Series motor would be cool if I can get the parts cheap enough!
Velocity Labs there probably wouldn't be anything off the shelf... you would probably have to contact Wiseco for the Pistons and K1 rods and have them custom-made... I was talking about a universal turbo kit like grab a 20g..or a gt3071 Something.... Like that.. There are some posts on UA-cam of decent power S-Series's. .. (400-450hp).....
I really enjoyed your video, very entertaining!
great video! love cheap great cars!
Awesome. I just bought a sw2 from 2000 with 74.000 miles. It is a automatic, with cruise control and traction control. It drives fine, only when i go over a pothole it makes a lot of noise in the back like i am driving on the steel rims without tires. And the back of the car want to move to the right or left.
Great video, i enjoyed every minute watching
Bugford needs the 3 b's. Bigger Better Boxer
Yes please do a full beige to black interior transformation that would be and look awesome...haven't seen it on youtube either
New sub great content bro keep it up and keep pushing
Just headed out on a Saturnday Morning drive.
Barely didn't edit out the stall at 8:28 lol. But dang, I wouldn't mind a cheap beater to experiment with...
It actually didn't stall! I went back and watched the clip and it did something REALLY weird, it sounded like I hit a pot hole, then it dropped to 0 rpms then recovered.
Great car!!
Nice video
You probably know them saturn manuals LOVE to chuck the diff pin and then destroy the case. Also use rtv as a speaker gasket little easier to do
I've seen Richpin's Diff Pin inspection video, but I didn't know that's what it was for, thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely check mine and probably change the fluid as well.
Don't knock a Saturn, I have a 97 SW turbo with a decent build and I'll destroy a corvette or my cousins DSM
I love saturns! :D
you would "destroy" an awd dsm? please look up the red demon and tell me if your car is capable of running that down. I have two awd dsms a 1g and 2g and even factory these cars are no slouch. awd is and always will be > fwd.
love the videos. your enthusiasm is welcome. subd.
Why newer than 1996, I’ve had 3 black sc1 saturns, a 1994,1995,1996, I love them
1996 and up use OBD-II to check engine codes. Up to 1995 was OBD-I 'standard', where every manufacturer had their own proprietary code readers.
Where is Velocity Labs??? Give us some updates!!! Please!!! :)
I have a sw2 and live in greeley lol
2000 SW2 in Fort Collins.
You got it in a nice color
Yeah, I lucked out there! I actually like how it looks.
Keep up the vids you doing great
Fill that motor mount with sikaflex my friend
I need an engine for my 99....it's for a big hole in the side of the block... Bought the car for 100 bucks
Nice beater brother. Please, what is 'C-foam'? I'm not familiar with that. Thank you!
At the end of the video you said put an intake on it, so did you pick up the blue intake you showed at the junkyard? Cheaper/quicker than ebay lol! Also I had an SC2 Saturn 5-speed i loved that little thing, it had some work done to it before I got it so it was loud and actually decently quick lol
That was for a 2000-2002 intake manifold, they're different than the 1997. ALTHOUGH, I could probably just chop it and make it work... That's a good idea, thanks! And yeah, I was surprised at how zippy that little red SC2 was, I loved it! I just needed something bigger.
Velocity Labs I’m in the same boat lol. I had my little two door before I had two kids
God i miss snow
RichPin is GREAT!! Your video is damn fine too, BTW.
Where is part 2?
Got excited to see a new notification but nothing about the dsm :/
I needed this car so I can change the clutch on the DSM!
Velocity Labs okay you’re right you’re right just givin ya a hard time! Keep up the great videos on the dsm man. I hope to see a clutch video soon :)
I wouldn't see foam. just any car.... It can clean some passageways and give you a really rough idle....
The ugliest car I've ever seen, I love it!!
Unless there is something seriously wrong with the car that u bought, that $350 will likely be a tremendously reliable car, even the automatic, the valve bodies usually go bad and some of the solenoids sometimes, but otherwise it's a solid transmission that's all gears, no junk bands, etc. But the manual transmissions in the S series will probably last 500,000+ miles...lol And the cars don't rust, they also are very light cars, that wagon is likely a couple hundred pounds lighter still than a stock civic...lol!! My 1995 SL2 is 2290-2280LBS with the Seibon hood and no spare ( the one in it was the wrong spare, don't ask, not sure what happened to it)...lol
yea, these cars are lighter than civics. My big bro had me and his son help him push his EG 4 door into his garage once. That civic fought us tooth and nail, and would roll back with all of its weight. I also had to push my mom's 02 saturn sl2 with the dohc 1.9L once, and in comparison, you can literally walk with the saturn. Not heavy at all. So technically speaking, your not gonna lose your stamina even if you do break down and have to push your saturn. Take your saturn on a walk!
@@mattdiesel2294 I ended up putting a 450HP Turbo Honda engine in mine with a upgraded cam and springs and retainers and ARP head studs with a 6 speed manual and LSD.
@@junechris Welp, there goes quality. Those L4 DOHC sure pack a punch on their own. Easy to maintain seeing as i now maintain two of these engines. My brother suggested that I put a honda engine in my sw2, but i said no. I like hondas to a certain degree, but that doesn't distinguish the fact that the dohc saturns run fine on their own. I would have to invest too much money into it which i already have. I intend to instead upgrade her with a 2002 model year dohc L4 with a manual transmission. It would technically be more cost efficient for me to buy a cheap SC2 with what i want, then just put my car's engine into that, while i put the transmission and motor from that car into mine. Then I could go from there, I already have a supercharger build idea set aside for it once i get another engine.
@@mattdiesel2294 To be honest I was sad and remorseful about wanting to build the LLO. It was very peppy and was a little lighter than the Honda 4 banger, weighing in a 220 LBS. It was just more cost effective for me to build the Honda instead. Any lets face it, Honda crack a can of whoop on most everything, when they are built.
I'm honestly not trying to be rude, but as an Australian I've never seen one of these cars in my life, just wondering, are they fast? Because that thing is not easy on the eyes.
They were American made and exported overseas. And there pretty slow but not too bad.
Bowie Call so it's just the old "cheap and reliable" popularity?
ConorCreature not fast, not quality and not good looking but it has the personality and charm of a car from a defunct company named after a planet!
Their marketing motto was, our cars are plastic and we have “dent resistant panels”, and for that reason, you cannot set expectations too high, for $350, you did well!
Saturn s series are great cars. It's quick ish,
will trade stock 5 speed mini truck for saturn wagon......
veiw #14
I'll give you $500 for it
U can't kill this car
There is a great mockumentary about the Winter Beater as an endangered species on UA-cam from a few years back. It crazy how much things have changed even from then to now and the guys interviewed in it are hilarious (though I don't think they were trying to be)! Anyways, check it out: ua-cam.com/video/UwlUeOP2OJo/v-deo.html
