- In June of 2003, five game developers came together to build something new. Hear the story of how Obsidian Entertainment began from four of its founders and get an insightful look into the development process of the studio's first games in part one of this multi-part series.

I know i'm a weirdo, but i realy enjoyed alpha protocol, i dont care if a game is ruff around the edges as long as it has soul. Thank you for the great games you guys have done the last 20 years.
Yeah it's janky but it's an amazing game, I hope that one day they revisit it.

It really is an underrated diamond in the rough. To me, the fact that you can't purchase it anymore on digital storefronts really is a crime. More people need to experience this wonderfully janky game.

Black Isle/Obsidian - I can honestly say that you ALL shaped my childhood and young adulthood by my experiences playing your games. In my mind, they are legendary and STILL to this day, they are what I compare new experiences to. Surprisingly, not many modern games can even come close to the entertainment and joy your titles brought me. You are legends and you are appreciated!

He left Obsidian on June 9, 2015 (Twitter) to pursue his personal projects in the video game industry as an independent writer and designer.
And is currently working in various video games companies
But a huge part of the history of Obsidian...
I'm 40, I've been playing videogames for as long as I can remember, what I always gets me in games is the storytelling and the rpg elements. Over my life I got a few favorite game developer companies, but there's something about Obsidian that always feels that you are kind of "closer" to my heart (like I feel that if in another dimension I would be doing videogames, I would definitely would be on an "Obsidian type of company"). There's something so special about the way you treat the narrative, the love for RPGs, the respect for the player's choices, the art, the storytelling and specially the humor! that really feels unique to me.
My deepest and sincere gratitude, respect, congratulations and best wishes to everyone at Obsidian. If I could, I would invite you all to my house to eat some typical Chilean foods and talk nerdy stuff! :D
For 20 more years of unforgettable role playing experiences!!!!
I really loved Pentiment, wish you guys do more games like that in the future. Maybe in other time periods with its respective painting styles!! Imagine something Aztec, or Greek, or Chinese, or Egyptian! Man i would love to see something like that!

Man, Alpha Protocol had such an insane choice/consequence options, I really should maybe replay it for the Nth time, because I've undoubtedly missed some weird choices leading to something I didn't expect.
Man, I absolutely LOVED Alpha Protocol! That game does not get enough credit for how great it was. Such a great game. One of the best spy/action titles to ever appear on consoles.
Strange to see the story of Obsidian without a word about Chris Avellone. I understand why they're not talking about him. But he was such an important part of what made Obsidian successful!
Here's to 20 years more!, congrats Obsidian, you beautiful people.

@@jungen1093 I don't remember the details nor do I any idea who's really in the right there. But some years back, Avellone was saying some real negative things about Obsidian and specifically the owners there. So most of the people appearing in this video. So I can only imagine there's a lot of bad blood there.

Such an amazing look into the history of Obsidian and the thought process and insight into the various projects. I have been a fan of the group since IWD black isle days and you guys never disappoint and put a lot of heart into the games. I did a kickstart around the time of PoE and your support was incredible, such amazing games and amazing people at Obsidian!
This video is such a conflicting watch, it's almost some sort of alt-history retelling of obsidians story where they tried to wipe Chris Avellone off the map, very sad. Chris played a massive part in making most of obsidians cult classics, being lead designer and writer on many of them, such as Kotor 2, NWN 2, Alpha Protocol and Fallout new Vegas. He may no longer be a part of the company, but he should always be remembered as part of your history, the good and the bad.

@@xBINARYGODx his impacts are credited so there’s no “false belief” about it and the guy is literally one of the founders of Obsidian… it shouldn’t take a lot of brain power to see that his input would’ve been valuable in the same way all the other founders inputs have been valuable in this
I'm proud to have played all your games, you have made me so happy and filled my inspiration for stories beyond anything I would've thought before.
Alpha Protocol is one of my favorites among all your games. I really wish you could revisit it at some point.

This brought tears to my eyes. All my best memories playing games came from Obsidian and Bethesda. Obsidian Deserves the Fallout and KOTOR licenses. They made the best versions of those games.

Obsidian handcrafted my childhood love of RPGs starting with KOTOR 2, and have been my favorite developer ever since. You guys rock, Obsidian! Can't wait for Avowed!
I played kotor 2 as a kid, that game will forever stick with me, i just bought recently PoE 1&2, looking forward for more info about Avowed, keep it going for another 20 years guys, you are one of my favorite developers, especially among the CRPG makers such as owlcat games and the beloved Larian Studios, hope you guys find big success with your next projects

I like 1 & 2 equally for different reasons, but 2 had the biggest impact on me in terms of writing.

I think Obsidian has, and always will be, one of the most memorable game developers to me. I remember their logo of what was then Black Isle on the game that began my love for PC gaming in the inro of Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader. Fallout: New Vegas was one of the first videogames I purchased myself for my brother's birthday. And KOTOR2, while not having the same initial impact as the first one, is still in my library of recently played. Pillars of Eternity is absolutely top notch. The Outer Worlds was quirky, fun madness. I can't wait to see what will become of Avowed.
Never go away Obsidian. I've yet to see a studio stick so firmly to their ethos and yet be imaginative enough to venture out of their comfort zone.
A remaster nwn2 is at the top of my buying list whenever that becomes a thing, love that game, the mods, and engine.

Obsidian is a great studio filled with talent, and Josh Sawyer especially is carving out a tremendous legacy in gaming. Always look forward to seeing what you all do next!
I love seeing these docs on the beginnings of game companies. It's wild to see these small devs grow into big devs. It all starts with a few guys who just wanna make fun games and it grows into something magical but seems like more often then not, big company culture takes over and everything falls apart.

Pillars of the Eternity 1 and 2 are one of the greatest RPGs of all time (IMO) so thank you for that!

I love Obsidian games. There is always a strong emphasis on the story and this is something that I admire a lot. My favourite to this day is Kotor 2 and I would love to see it redone by Obsidian one day and hopefully with all the content that didn't get into final product because of the time crunch. Still I am pretty hyped for the Avowed and i'm hoping that one day you guys will have your own full fledged TTRPG set in Eora. Good luck to everyone at Obsidian.

My favorite Obsidian titles would have to be Fallout: New Vegas & Grounded. I’m not a big RPG guy but those 2 hooked me!
Obsidian is by far the most underrated company in gaming. I just hope Microsoft doesn't mess with them. I hope they continue to make more games in Eora
MS let’s them do what they want. That should be obvious with a game like Pentiment and Grounded being made lol. There’s no way those games would exist without the MS purchase.

kotor 2, nwn2 and new vegas are some of my favourite videogame experiences.
this company has always been putting real passion into the games they make and that has unfortunately become rare these days.

I'd love to see an Alpha Protocol sequel or a Nevewinter Nights 3. Obsidian honestly has made amazing games, they are really under rated. Their story writing and choice based games are another level.
Another shout-out for some Alpha Protocol love, sure there were a few issues but it was a great game, definitely one that needs a remake or spiritual successor.
For me, Obsidian are one of the few creators (of any media) that get an immediate, no-questions asked "oh, a new thing? that's on the list to check out" alongside Larian, the Jim Henson company, Aardman & Pixar plus a few others.

good on Obsidian for not glossing over too much the difficult times and layoffs. I feel like most studios making a documentary about themselves absolutely would skip that and not be honest.
Nice documentary, gives me goosebumps and kicking me back to the time I used to work in the games industry and I can totally relate, especially the thought process of publishers, which leads to lay offs....

I really hope you guys do D&D games again. It's a shame we never got to see the BG Black Hound, but Icewind Dale, BG Dark Alliance and NWN2 are still among my favourite games ever. And it's so clear you guys are passionate about the setting of Forgotten Realms. Hopefully the success of BG3 by Larian will push WotC to try to work with you again!

Love these guys and most of their games. For the next video, only expect a self-criticism about how they killed the Dungeon Siege franchise with its change of genre, surely due to being forced to put them on consoles.

Sounds like a KOTOR II remaster needs to happen. I had no idea that was their first game as a studio, remember really liking it back on the Xbox as it felt so dark and brooding compared to the first one. Tonally, just awesome. It would be great to see their vision realized for that story.

Was looking at Obsidian recent PC game sales via Steam (From VG Insights)
- Pillars of Eternity : $86 million
- Tyranny : $16 million
- Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire: $26 milllion
- The Outer Worlds : $23 million
- Grounded : $50 million
- Pentiment: $2 million
Despite such critically well reviewed games and having stellar experienced game devs, financially the games dont do well compared to other larger studios.
Lets hope with XBOX marketing things change.
