Dear all!! - This is quite an old build now and parts are currently impossible to find, but if you're looking for a good computer to run 3D CAD, you may then be interested to know that I have now developed and released the worlds most comprehensive FREE benchmarking test for Autodesk Inventor with a global online leaderboard. See the announcement video here ua-cam.com/video/Xck3lvuMRjM/v-deo.html and check out the leaderboard here invmark.cadac.com/#/ - you're sure to find some amazing info on my leaderboard with regards to which parts are performing best.
TFI - CAD & Technology For Industry
would you recomend the budget pc for a engenier student?
Jesus Christ is Lord
Hey! I loved your videos, they helped me a lot (I'm brazilian and all great national content about hardware is geared towards games).
Well, I work with Archicad (similar to Revit, then 3D modeling with a lot of polygons is my focus) and I'm looking for a VRAM. But money is a huge limiter and even a RX 580 - 8gb is expensive to me.
I have plans to change my VRAM in one year or less.
Do you think that a Rx 550 ddr5 - 4gb is "ok" or do I need at least a GTX 1650 DDR6, 4gb?
(price difference: $ 125 to $200 - and 1 dollar = 5 $BRL)
My spec.: Asus B550 prime, Ryzen 5 3600x, 2x8 3200Mhz RAM
3:15 did he just say “corona” 😶 *flashbacks begin
wish you'd remake this with both builds in 2021, because i can't even understand what to even make right now, and every time i look the budget explodes to $4,000
Great video man. And really impressive slayer. It puts alot into perspective.
Imma be honest this video actually helped quite a bit. I now understand what I should invest on more for my purpose instead of just dumping money on every components. Great job!! 👍👍👍
Ouch ... I put all the parts for the $650 system in my Amazon cart and it added up to $950 ... I think I need to move to the UK
Oof. Don't forget there's two versions of it, the Amazon links in this video are for the $800 version of the workstation slayer... the parts list for the $650 version is in the previous video! Not sure which one you added to your cart but just checking.
I put the links provided from the build in my cart, I got $1004.69 in us dollars, before tax. One year later, I would think the part should have come down in price. There is still an OS. and smaller bits to buy to complete the PC! No PC build video tutorials will ever have anything resembling accurate pricing!
@@tonymeers9960 since last year we have seen the prices of a number of computer system parts go up on price here in the US. .any have been hit by the 25% tariff on Chinese parts. In addition some parts just went up in price because they were bring used as price leaders when this system was put together.
When ever someone puts together a low cost computer system you need to use the component parts that are the best priced parts ... at that time. Regarding an operating system ... I've never seen a process for building a system that includes an operating system. The fact is that you can install Windows for free unless you activate it. The OS still works fine but you get a reminder to activate it each time you log onto the system. Also, there are a number of VERY inexpensive options for buying an activation key if you search on the internet for discount Windows activation keys.
Last November I finally did go ahead and buy a similarly configured system for $779 from a system configurator... Sky Tech Arch Angle. The only negative about the system was it had only a single 8GB stick of memory. I just recently replaced that with four 16 GB sticks of RGB memory for $260. That same memory today is almost $400 to give you an example about how vollital computer parts pricing can be.
I like this video and many others showing how to configure low cost systems because they helped me to understand how to balance parts in the system and how to judge relative pricing of the different parts.
Can you please help me out with measuring contour length of dxf for laser cutting for cost estimation in inventor of in inventor nesting hope you respond
Very nice video, I liked it. Would you recommend your Workstation Slayer for more engineering-oriented work? (CAD + finite element simulations like Dassault Abaqus being the heaviest workloads). My concern is the single-thread processor, it might be a bottleneck for the heavy math on the finite element simulations.
Wow... just wow!!!
This was very helpful. I'm getting ready to get into 3D rendering for doing my jewelry designs. I'll be going the CPU route rather than the absurd priced GPU cards.
I appreciate this so much! I need a PC to render and edit videos, and i keep over pricing myself
The low end stuffs are really Powerful these days...
Great music and very interesting to see for some use with blender could make a good 3D rendering machine at a budget
Can you please tell me what is the name of the software you used as Revit benchmark and where to download it from?
What other strengths would this PC have other than 3d rendering? Would it have any weak areas?
What graphicd card is good enough for 3d modeling and sculpting models for 3d printing in 2022?(no rendering)
If you have a 4 monitor capable graphics card ( P2000) do you need more performance from your memory, versus a two monitor set-up?
Regarding my query about laptops, thank you for the fast response. It is much appreciated.
If one wanted to pump an extra 400 pounds into the budget, what parts would be worth upgrading????
Hello sir, my little brother just got accepted into an associate degree program in animation. He will use autodesk maya a lot, does this "$650 workstation killer" can perform as well (as the programs you benchmarked in the video) in autodesk maya?
thank you
Very good Neil & Very interesting. The new AMD CPUs really look impressive. Inventor using only the one core most of the time seems to work very well on them. I'm still thinking of upgrading my system but not sure yet which way to jump. So far it's looking like AMD CPU & Nvidia graphics but we'll see what's going on when I pluck up the courage to plunge in. . . Your videos are a great help. . . Once again I thank you. . . . Jim
Literally my second favorite video only to the slayer build. Love these new videos. If you were to upgrade the GPU on the slayer to something a little better, what would it be?
I would recommend a 2060 super. Anything below is meh or a 5700xt for a upgrade. You can be okay with a 2060 but I can't except anything under 8gb of vram.
I'm new to 3D modelling and rendering, I'm looking to model, animate and render in reasonable speeds in Blender and Cinema 4D on a budget, do you have any advice on a budget custom build? My current Laptop is mac 16gb ram 2012 unibody 2.9ghz but the graphics card is intel with it being the 13inch not the 15inch so I'm a bit stumped with me being in my final year of uni, it needs to be done on a budget
Seems like a fair entry point for someone to start on a good foot until you get the bucks for the Bigfoot ! Thanks !
Will Ryzen 3900X 12 core, Support Msi X570-A Pro MB, with 2080 Ti 11 Gb at Max Usage? Will it be Stable ?
Could you please recommend which motherboard+CPU is better to choose:
1. Аsrock z170 pro 4s with I7 7700
2. GigaByte GA-B450M S2H with Ryzen 3 3300X (plus DDR4 8GB 3200mhz and AMD Wraith cooler)
First option is about 25% higher in price.
All comparisons i've seen is only gaming perfomance. I don't know how good is Ryzen 3 3300X in Solidworks.
Mostly for modeling. Sometimes big assemblies with 200+ parts
Will the "$650" build work for cad simulations? What build will you suggest for large modeling (assemblies) and doing FEA?
Depends on Your Budget but Go for AMD Ryzen for the CPU
amd gpu for vray is pretty bad compared to nvidia right because of no cuda?
I've been running Fusion 360 on a 3100 for a few weeks. It's pretty good. Bogs down from time to time, but I've got a million things open as well. I'll upgrade when a deal comes around.
What graphic card are you using? I got confuse to choose between 3100 and 3300x
@@akbarmaulana936 8GB RX 580, but CAD software mostly bottlenecks on CPU, not GPU. Everything still works for me. If you're planning to do complex assemblies, I would suggest 3300x or better. It gets slow if I need to make changes to something early in the timeline since the whole model needs to recalculate. It's not a frequent problem though so I'm pretty happy with the 3100. Not even looking to replace it at this point. Most people say the 3300x is worth the small amount of money since the cores are co-located meaning less latency when coordinating.
@@brawndo8726 thanks for your quick reply dude. I will go with 3100 and 570 8gb bcs the price of 580 is skyrocket here
Im rendering a nebula in blender in the background and it automatically set the video to 4k. The Glitchy effects made me think my gpu was failing for a sec
Xeon Prosser is work on it?
My question, is would this build work well for programs like z brush and Autodesk Maya? Im a 3d artist and I know next to nothing about PC's but I want to build one for my work.
Hey did you end up building a pc for work because I’m studying 3D animation in University and I’m in the same boat because my mac sucks
Lemme know if you ever get am answer bro💪🏾
Hi! I've been following your channel and was wondering if you could make a budget-oriented hardware recommendation for general use 3D software and video editing (C4D, UE4, CAD, AE). This channel seems well versed on hardware way beyond your usual cinebench benchmark that other youtubers do. I also saw your video on the 2400G APU FOR 3D work so I wanted to ask for advice without breaking the bank.
Recently I've been checking Ryzen 5 2600 reviews as it is much cheaper than the 3600 and seems like a good deal.
Would a Ryzen 5 2600 be enough in terms of performance? I'm getting started on 3D and VFX so I'm no professional and could handle render times, but would like smooth performance (scrubbing, effects, preview of the project, modeling) I currently have a AMD A9-9420 laptop with radeon R5 integrated graphics with 4GB of RAM, it gets sluggish with Blender and sometimes even Photoshop. Here's what I'm planning to buy.
MID-RANGER WORKSTATION:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2600
GPU - AMD Sapphire Radeon RX 580 8GB / 4GB
RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2x8gb) DDR4-3000 Mhz CL16
MOBO - ASRock B450M Pro4
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM
SSD - Kingston A1000 240GB NVMe SSD
PSU - Cooler Master V2 650W 80+Plus Bronze PSU
CASE - Deciding currently between Eclipse P400S and other white/silver cases, however the Enthoo Evolv is still the best case I've seen aesthetically speaking and would love to have one.
The RX 580 is a lot cheaper than the 1060 6GB in my country, I know NVIDIA's cards are better for my use case but a new RX 580 is roughly the same price as a used 1060. I might even get a 1050 ti. Might upgrade in the future to the 3rd gen, but nothing guarantees that I work on this computer in particular or in an office which already has one. That's the main reason I'm not overspending.
Any advice is appreciated!
im in the very same position as yours and i don't know where to go lol
@@jrkabeel7790 Dude I ended up buying a second hand system with a quad core i7 in it (i7 4770) and have seen no issues. For a beginner system it's quite good. I got 8gb of ram and will Buy 8 more to get 16gb. I will upgrade once I notice slow downs. I still don't use C4D but Adobe and UE works nicely
@@Luis444Felipe congratulations dude! def should go for 16gb it will smooth your work for sure, i'll try my best in building my machine soon, hopefully lol
@@jrkabeel7790 Yeah, consider older i7's and even quad core's like the Ryzen 5 2400G/3400G if you are on an extreme budget. Clock speed is still good.
What's that autodesk thing
hi, in our company we have a workstation for VR which is used with vred, it has 2 gtx 1080 in sli. When we use it doesn't reach the 90 fps that the vive is capable of but the gpus are both around 70%, there's a way to use all the botential of both the gpus? thanks
Wow that question has a BIG answer, it all depends on your Vred scene tbh. I've got Vred scenes which are barely capable of 10fps in VR with these PCs... the scenes need to be optimised as in some cases there's just far too much data being handled by Vred to maintain a good frame rate, and that can be a CPU Bottleneck which means your powerful GPUs aren't able to stretch their legs. Also, I've found that having even just one extra scene light (i.e. rectangular light) causes massive performance loss in VR, so turn all extra lights off in VR and try to just use the HDRI lighting and exposure value of that.
I've just discovered that Vred is reporting half the fps in the viewport when VR is enabled, but I think it actually is pushing out 90fps, I think that's just the display reporting the wrong fps
I am pretty sure that you cannot benefit 2 gpu's in VR use. It causes harm more than benefits. In rare cases you could get a few fps more.
Would u mind sellin those budget rig 🙏🏻💰
I literally opened this video after seeing one from LTT, big up
It was my T-shirt, UA-cam has gotten that smart!
Someone PLZ help!!!
Can someone tell me if I have a good budget setup? I have:

Gpu: Geforce gtx 1660
Motherboard: Asus prime x570-p
Ram: g skill rip jaws v series 16 gb (2x8gb)
Storage: western digital 500 gb and seagate barracuda 2tb
Power supply: evga 220 g-3

Will a rtx 2080 be okay to use for design for 3d printing? I'm new to printing dont judge 😅
Depends what CAD program you're using for the design but yea it'll probably be more than okay, I'm still using a 2080Ti for everything!
can i get all these from AMAZONE. i am a 3d render i use LUMION to do my animations
Hello there, did you build it? My uses are the same.. I was wondering if i should go w the r5 3600
Great video, keep 'em coming. Your channel is amazing for a college engineering student such as myself.
Your cinematography is top notch, scripts are on point. You deserve so many more subs. I'll head on over to patreon and subscribe now.
I'll use your amazon link, I'm wanting to do a itx build with the 3600, but with the gtx 1660ti for the GPU since i like to do a bit of gaming.
Thanks for the content.
Wow thanks Bryan, I got the email ping from Patreon too so thanks very much for that! I know I can do a hell of a lot better with things like the cinematography - I have the gear for creating videos the same quality as many of the top UA-camrs, I just don't have the space or the time, my fatal flaw is that I try to create videos at the same level as the major UA-camrs without the time that they have or the staff that they have, which is really an almost impossible task! So at the moment a few of my videos have gone back to me just being on webcam as I don't have the time to rig up the camera gear and get the composition right, but thanks and hopefully in the future I'll be able to keep on improving.
Could you possibly look at suitable laptops for engineering students, so something around the £700 mark? The market is changing rapidly and so there may be something out there that gives good performance when running Inventor.
I've tried to reach out to the laptop makers but they're just not interested, they'd much prefer to send all their laptops out to the guys who are mostly qualified to just play games on them and run Winzip tests. So unfortunately I just can't get my hands on them to review them for 3D CAD.
@@Neil3D To bad! That would be wery interting to find a laptop with great value for it´s money. We now use HP ZBooks and they are crasy expensive. What we need is to have the ability to have two 4k monitors via a dock, and atleast 32Gb of ram. If someone has sugestions please let me know :D
Can you ad Canadian links please?

What makes a PC good at rendering? Is it the RAM, Storage, CPU or GPU?

Money
what does the term "money no object" mean?
maybe it's a saying in the UK or the USA, in Italy it means nothing. Can you tell me what that means? Because I did not understand the meaning of the video .... :(
It means that the money are not a problem so basically this pc is the best of the best for the thing he is using it.
Neil will you be making any videos about "the beast" when you use it?
I'd love to, the challenge is how to format that into something meaningful and interesting/informative! Did you have anything in mind?
@@Neil3D benchmarks are always usefull, in video format or not :D im not seeing much cpu benchmarks for cad. Then again maybe i'm looking at the wrong places.
@@Neil3D BTW could you tell me the name of that jimi hendrix remix?
Can the workstation slayer support vr?
Yes. I used it as a VR gaming box in the living room for quite a while after it was built. It's not the best at it but it worked. Although I'd probably go for something better than a RX 580 today, VR has moved on a lot since then and that build is a couple years old now which in computer years is a lifetime.
I actually tried running blender on intel uhd 600
I would have liked all those rgbs, if they displayed local temp. For me rgbs are distraction, they have no function for me as while i am looking on screen why i would want to look at all those childish leds.
I think you have made a little mistake, let me correct you - gay leds.
3/15/2021 new egg price 2080Ti-$2049 will stick with AMD 3400G that is still in my price range.
Think i'm gonna buy a couple of killers for our new employees :)
Yes! The Amazon links are in the description nudge nudge wink wink haha
FLEXING HIS LTT T-SHIRT
Jimi ....all the wayyyy!!!
FML and here I am trying to earn a living from my 520m Cuda card.... **Cringe** Great comparison though! When I'm able to afford it I'll certainly consider your suggested components (the ones in your build vid for 650 one that is)
6:06 you can overclock it a a bit by 5% .
Jimi hendrix ⚡
...but did you peel it, mate??
yup you did...
These components are at a 1200$ pc now
Gahdamn this build is 1k now
Not 650$ anymore haha, the gpu alone is $649 and this microchip shortage is not helping either
Update for 2020 dude..
a certain someone by the name of jimi is rolling in his grave
Is it worth to upgrade the rx580 to quadro p2000? For primarly autocad 2d detailing steel eg. gcds.carterfamily.ca/sample-drawings/steel-detailing
The RX580 is going to be slightly more powerful than the P2000 but for AutoCAD steel detailing it probs won't be noticeable at all, I think the P2000 is cheap but in proportion to the build cost its quite a big jump up. Yea I'd say it was worth it if you only plan on using AutoCAD and you're in an office setting, if you're working from home and its your own money then probably not, stick with the RX 580.
6 times the price but not 6 times more performance
Your $650 pc actually costs $1,187.04
This no way this equipment is only $650. This is false advertisement.
possible several months ago then. then coronavirus
found a 580 8gb for 150CAD on ebay
650$ build? this is more like a 1,650$ build
