How to Replace or Upgrade the 3rd Brake Light on a Nissan Frontier For Just $26 (DIY LED Install)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- My roof top tent was slightly impacting my third brake light, which was kind of busted up when I bought the truck, so I decided to upgrade and replace it. I went with a pretty inexpensive LED unit that is smoked and, I think, looks a lot nicer than the stock one.
In this video, I'll show you, step by step, exactly how to do this upgrade/replacement. I'll also give you some tips based on what I learned to help save you time and make the install as easy as possible.
So, if you're third brake light is out and you want to upgrade it at the same time as fixing it, check out the video! Post up in the comments below with any questions you run into and I'm happy to help! Hope you get value out of this video, and if you do, please click that like button and make sure to subscribe!

Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate the instructional video and the recommendation on the cheap light. God bless!
Glad it was helpful!
10-24 is a standard screw not a metric. It's a #10 screw (.191" diameter) with 24 threads per inch. Interesting, considering the part is so cheap, I assumed it to be China made. Great video bud thanks for all the information.
Good info! Yeah, I'm sure it's from China as well. It's still on my old truck and holding up fine though to this day. Glad it was helpful!
Can the cargo lights also work like day time running lights?
I’ve not really tried, but you definitely can switch them on with the cargo light switch inside the truck. They may turn themselves off after some period of time though. Also not sure if they come on while in drive or not.
Did you pay 26.00 bucks?!!
Sorry, I’m tipsy because we did shots every time you said “nut(s)”. 😂
Kidding…. Great video!!
There are multiple videos where I find myself repeating the same word over and over for some reason so feel free to do drinking games to any of them, lol.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Your reverse lights are actually cargo lights.
Guess they're both
So when you put your truck in reverse do the white lights in the new light you installed come on or only come on when you open the doors?
@@rayjimenez3265 They come on when you put it in reverse.
@@AllThingsOverlandingdoes it come on when u put the cargo lamp switch on?
@ yes
Hey man I have a 2013 king cab frontier and have been looking for some exterior mods, my truck is black so I was planning on matching that and buying smoked head/taillights and the 3rd TL. Besides that I’m looking for side rails (nerf bars preferred) and roof racks, any suggestions? I could use the extra opinion
Not sure on the nerf bars as I've only ever had sliders. Z1 has them I believe as does Victory 4x4 and those are good brands.
For smoked taillights, I have the non-smoked version of these and I like them. They're super reasonably priced too: amzn.to/46wXzvI
For roof racks, I've heard some mixed reviews on the Nismo but since it's basically OEM and no drill installation, that's kind of nice. Z1 sells it here: www.z1offroad.com/nismo/nismo/nismo-off-road-05-21-nissan-frontier-roof-rack-p-53893.html
Anyways, hope that helps!
@@AllThingsOverlanding thanks man I’ll look into that
Is it supposed to stay on while the headlights are on? After replacing it, they only go on when I hit the brakes.
The third brake light (stock and aftermarket) only turn on when you hit the brakes or put it in reverse or hit the unlock button on your remote while the truck isn’t moving.
My break light only comes on as well and after the install my cabin and cargo lights no longer work. Think I might have burnt out a fuse or am using to many amps? Let me know what you think. Thank you!
Hello,
I'm considering this light, have any of the led's burnt out yet?
TIA.
Nope. Still going strong.
After installing this, now the cargo and interior lights stay on all the time when the truck is running. When the ignition is off I can flip the cargo switch on them off and it will go off until I turn the ignition on again. If I unhook the cargo light, the interior lights go back to working Correctly. I hope you can help me out as I am a newby at trying to fix simple things like myself
That's weird. I'm assuming you installed them just using the harness (not hardwiring them), right? If so, I can't imagine you'd have weird side effects unless somehow your harness is wired differently than mine since it's fairly straight forward wiring wise. If you know anyone locally that is fairly electrically inclined, you may show them what you did and see if they can troubleshoot it as it's only 3 wires so hopefully it's not too bad. I guess maybe I just got lucky since mine was essentially plug and play.
@@AllThingsOverlanding I wired it like you advised, I just unplugged the wires to the cargo light for now. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.
How were you able to wire the harness wires to the led light wires? It seems like they are both male connectors.
They plugged right in. It did come with 2 different plugs, so I had to figure out which one was the correct one for my application, but once I figured that out, it just plugged right in.
How did you end up getting that wiring harness disconnected? I can’t get in there
Nevermind, I finally watched until the end where you explain it
No problem! Hopefully it helped. That was probably the biggest pain in the whole thing.
Yup, worked like a charm. Now If only I had the right harness connection…
@@idontcit1 Ugh...
Always fun surprises when buying used vehicles. 🤣
Haha, sometimes! :D
What size deep socket wrench did you use?
I believe it was an 8mm socket.
I got the same ones and when I connected them my dome and cargo lights went out like completely out they worked before but now not at all
Huh, that's weird. Did you check your fuses?
you ever figure out what caused it?
Thank god the bolts are just behind the clips. I thought i was going to have to remove the headliner.
Definitely not as bad as I expected!
Did you have any issues installing the wheels on your decked?
I actually bought the truck with the decked already installed. I have had a slight leak I’ve been fighting but other than that, it’s been good.
Do u remember what size nuts u used?
I mention what I bought in the video but they weren’t quite right so honestly, I would take you truck to the hardware store and buy some that look close and test fit them and return the ones that don’t work.
Do they sell one for A 2003 Nissan truck
Looks like they do and this one has decent reviews: amzn.to/3BDUONT
I also got the clear tail lights. Completely changes the look of the truck
Nice!
If mine has white that goes white to white right?
That’s what I would guess but it may take some trial and error if that doesn’t work.
@@AllThingsOverlanding do you mind if I get your contact info so that I can send you pictures of what I’m having problems with? Because I need help lol I replaced fuses and still nothing lol obviously I have a green wire on the stock light my light came with white wires so im just super confused

So, I haven't taken mine off yet; was going to 'LED' only the cargo lights. But the idea of replacing the entire unit does seem more sensible. I noticed one thing straightaway in the instructions here. He said he went to a hardware store and bought 10-24 nuts. Those are #10 by 24 threads per inch (tpi). That is an SAE thread, that is, American. SAE is Society of American Engineers. Some Metrics are nearly identical to SAE and are able to thread down about the thickness of a nut, then stop dead. This vehicle certainly would be ALL METRIC. So while he might be able to force the nylon SAE nut onto a metric thread, it certainly is NOT the best way to do the job. He chided the previous owner for not having any nuts; I am chiding this guy for trying to force an SAE nut onto Metric. All hardware stores nowadays have both SAE and Metric
There wasn’t any forcing so it must have been close enough that it worked just fine.
Do you happen to know if this will fit a 2022 Frontier? The whole truck comes with LED lighting except for the 3rd brake light. I don't understand why manufacturers keep doing this lol. They go all LED except for one set of lights, usually the rear turn signals or in the Frontier's case, just the 3rd brake light.
Haha, yeah, it’s crazy. I’ve heard they’re similar but not sure. Since it’s through Amazon though, you could always order it and test fit it and return it if it doesn’t fit!
My screws go in from theback
Cool
Installed black to black red to red green to white, only brake lights work no reverse or cargo lights. cargo and dome lights don't work, truck wont honk or light up when locking it. (still locks the truck) this shitty product is gonna end up costing me time and money don't recommend well edit when i figure this mess out. . .
Not sure what the problem is. Worked fine for me. Also not sure how a third brake light would impact your interior lights or locking functionality but maybe you touched something live and blew a fuse?
Did you figure this out?
Yes! I took it to the shop and they found out my interior fuse box went bad because of this product. Use it at your own risk. @@alejandrovilleda7290
