Woodturning: The Cherry Canary!

- This piece was the product of a few days of staring at the woodpile and wondering which piece would fly onto the lathe and inspire me. In spite of the fact that nearly all of the sap wood was rotten and punky and insect-ridden, this piece of wild Maine black cherry eventually decided to sprout the most annoying wings ever sanded and then required a pedestal in order to sit upright. I'm fairly pleased that both the project and I came out of this one piece, respectively, without losing too many chunks of wood or knuckles. This is my 31st filmed project! On November 5, 2020 before sunrise, I was climbing a tree to my deer stand when I lost footing and fell about 25 feet to the ground. I woke up 20 minutes later thinking I had taken a nap under the tree for no apparent reason. I soon realized my back and right hand were broken, specifically my L1 vertebra burst fractured and my right index metacarpal broke in 5 pieces. I was able to walk about 100 yards out of the woods to my friend's waiting canoe and was taken to the hospital. God was very merciful. I could have become paralyzed or worse, but I am slowly getting back on my feet and hoping to make the best of 2021!

By far one of my favorite pieces all of your pieces are beautiful but this one stands out. Glad you’re healing from your injury two years ago my brother did the same broke his back and shoulder but there is an amazing God he is still with me and I couldn’t be more thankful. Such beautiful work and you make it so relaxing that it is addictive

I can't believe that I hit the like button when I first viewed this video & didn't comment. Ah well, that's old age for you. When you started turning & then stopped to rip all the 'crud' off of the piece I began to wonder if there would be anything left for you to turn. Fortunately there was & what a beautiful piece it turned out to be. The grain, the colour & the final form are stunning & a great finish to 'top it off'. Stunning! It is as if you and the blank are communicating with each other, to bring out the true beauty of each piece. This piece is the result of that 'conversation.' One of my summer-time pleasures is taking a day-trip up the Maine coast towards Acadia. I stop at places that catch my eye...pottery, basketry, woodworking...anything from local craftspeople. Seeing the output of true artists is inspiring (and humbling!) Maybe some day, I'll stumble upon your place!
