When Mazda redesigned the CX-5 in 2017, they asked what people didn't like about the 1st gen models. The worst thing was the amount of road and cabin noise when driving. Mazda added 170lbs of sound deadening materials, including acoustic / audio glass ( double thick with an air chamber between) on front and both driver and passenger windows. Double door seals, rubber seals around the engine bay, and sound deadening materials in the headliner, and wheel wells. Many reviewers have noted that the CX-5 is super quiet when driving on the road. I have a 2018 GT model, and my 97 year old father has stated that this car is the only car he rides in where he can carry a conversation without shouting.
That's really good to know. I have a 2015 Akera and the road noise is becoming a increasing annoyance as I'm now forced back to work. Gosh, looking at that 2024 G35 Akera and wondering whether to trade-in...🤪
@@guest8102 Best example of how quiet the CX-5 has become happened when I pulled into a drive thru line. The vehicle in front was a pickup truck at the speaker. When he moved on, I took his place and when I rolled down my window, I was shocked to hear that the truck was a diesel clattering away, and almost instantly, I could smell the fumes off it as well. None of that was apparent until I rolled down my window, which tells me the sound deadening worked really well, and the cabin air filter also kept the fumes from coming into my car.
We bought the GT 2.5l non turbo. The next one down from this. $3500 cheaper. It saves $27 per tank compared to the turbo. Still has enough go too! The touchscreen can be turned on in the settings (at least the 2024 model can), not just for when you are parked either. You just have to agree to their warning. Wireless CarPlay and charging too.
I got the turbo akera.. Because 27 per tank is nothing compared to coming from my Holden V6 which had a bad drinking habit.. The engine uses 1/3 less fuel and because of the amazing torque the driving feel is comparable to throwing the commodore around. Very happy with it so far.

It's like they never read the comments. I've had my 22 Mazda 3 for a couple of years and I love the dial, I can get exacy where I need to, quickly, both with the Mazda system and Android Auto. I always see loads of comments making the same point. Sure, it's confusing if you're only spending a couple of hours with it, but within a week you'll be lightning quick.
Got the top spec turbo 2023. Everything works as it should and drives great. I have zero issues with the infotainment system and control dial. You can also use voice commands for Google maps and Apple Music.
The dial is so much better to navigate the infotainment rather than reaching over and trying to swipe. It’s less distracting and works just as fast. Reviews bang on about the dislike for the dial when we who actually bought the CX-5 love it. The screen size is just good enough. Don’t need a desktop-looking screen.
dials are better because of physical controls, they'll always be more reliable than a touch screen unless you're using a mobile phone, car touch screens have been dog crap since forever
As dated as this car and design may be...they are still class-winning. There is nothing else in this class that looks as nice as the Mazda...both inside and outside. It's just got a classic simple uncluttered look and feel to it. The others all get it wrong...to some degree or other. With that being the case, sensible tweaking makes a lot of sense as opposed to a radical redesign.
Thanks for the good review - I’ve owned several Subarus but stopped when they introduced the flawed CVT concept - because I would never buy anything unless it was Japanese my choices have diminished over the last ten years to only Mazda & Toyota (avoid Nissan (Renault) / Mitsubishi) - yes there’s the Toyota ‘tax’ but Mazda has always demonstrated high quality, reliability and great value for money as Subaru once did - if I was looking at a well-built medium SUV with a conventional automatic transmission and AWD the CX5 would be no1 for my driveway next to the Hilux.
It’s still timeless! I hope if ever Mazda would build a new CX 5, that they would still retain the great driving dynamics and engine of the vehicle and less on the over aesthetic look like modern cars have.
Towing hitch fitted with the exhaust manifold running across the rear of the. Vehicle. / extra cost ? I’m interested in the CX5 what is the drive away total cost ?
I just brought one.. managed to bargain down on unit sitting in the lot. Akera turbo with the mats and cargo tray, metallic pair option.. drive away 53k. I negotiate hard and prepare to walk away to another dealer further out of town. But phone ahead and see what they have at hand in the lot.
Digging into corners the car sends 60% of the power to the rear to slingshot you out of the corners , also when you accelerate quick from a stop it does NOT stay in front drive 60% power to the rear ....a little more research guys.
the only reason why you buy this car is for the engine and driving dynamics, the last remaining turbo petrol that is affordable (relativity - unless you count the nnn events Tiguan or Skoda rubbish).

My kids can’t sleep in a quiet car 🤷♂️.
They should increased the inside size if they really wanted to listen.
What’s the width of the backseat anyway?
Just ordered one. Picking it up next week. The value, handling and reliability put it at the top of my list.

The dial is easy to use live with it the reporter is incorrect

What happened to the full size spair wheel ? A real turn off for Australia
A full size wheel fits in it but it’s much heavier than the temp one that’s supplied.

Great review, my favourite motorist journalist... Sam when are we seeing a review on the manual transmission Hilux, ford offload....
It is touch screen for Apple car play and android auto but not when it is with Mazda connect system.

It’s as classy as fuck.
Can't make up my mind cx-5 or cx 30? I'm thinking cx-30 it's a little smaller. Getting the turbo though, i prefer some kind of power.
Solid vehicles, we have a 2016 2.5 and lovely to drive.
Don['t you find the cabin noise annoying? I have a 2015 Akera, mate I have to turn the stereo up to be able to hear it!!

Outside need to redesign!
I agree, looks dated. Need to also come up with better rear brake lights
@@christinecoco6792 i think the 2024 ones look way better with that new grill but the mouth piece shape is still ugly, that's the only change i'd make

What kind of drink was she served?😢😩
The best part no New type Transmission std t speed top point that as it’s a turn off with the new type that are not able to be repaired
