Leslie Phillips was a brilliant comic actor. His Biography, was both moving and funny. what a great man? Leslie, along with Terry-Thomas were the best.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and I agree about Terry Thomas! Thank you for watching! xxxx
He was my crush way back in the 50’s and it was no secret that I always burned a candle for him. My eldest son took me to the National exhibition Centre in Birmingham to meet Lesley Phillips in about 2010. I think it would’ve been when he was signing autographs at a convention for people dealing with movie, props and things like that, he was an absolute darling and I still treasure his autograph to this day after fancying him for over 50 years
What a delightful story! It's so lovely to hear about your long-lasting admiration for Leslie Phillips. Meeting a childhood crush after so many years must have been an incredibly special moment for you. It's wonderful that he lived up to your expectations and left you with a cherished memory and autograph. Thank you for sharing this lovely experience with us! xxxx
Wow! When he first signed up as a soldier he was deemed A for health. He quickly was downgraded to a C then an E. Yet he lived till he was 98... A great actor, thanks for this upload.
Leslie Phillips certainly had quite a journey. I'm glad you enjoyed the video - thank you so much for watching - it's very appreciated xxxx
Great video

to this day whenever i park the car i say "ship parked" im a 90s kid but i grew up listening to many navy lark tapes and watching all the old leslie phillips movies on sunday afternoon tv and have huge affection for the man. What a gent.
That's so lovely! Leslie Phillips certainly left his mark with his iconic catchphrases and memorable performances. It's wonderful to hear how his work has resonated with you, even as a 90s kid. His talent and charm seem to transcend generations, leaving a lasting legacy of laughter and affection. Thank you for sharing your memories and for watching the video - it's truly appreciated! xxxx

It's truly my pleasure! Thank you so much Jill xxxx
Hi Did you ever meet Leslie?
@jillwarsop8988 sadly not xxxx
My grandmother is buried at that cemetery, I've been there twice and I live in New Zealand 🇳🇿
It's touching to hear about your connection to the cemetery, especially from all the way in New Zealand. Thank you for sharing! xxxx
Memorials are made by the descendents. Looks like his children never forgave him. Hence, no one bothered to make one for him. Very sad. He gave so much happiness to others. RiP. Thank you for posting. He was part of my childhood in that i grew up watching his films
It's a difficult one - his children might not have any say over his memorial as iI am guessing that his wife would have been next of kin and then it would be down to her to decide on a memorial - I do also wonder if it's all in hand and it's just a question of the time it takes for the earth to settle etc - it might be a simple as that - lets hope so! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video - it's always appreciated, thank you! xxxx
If achieving the rank of OBE means anything it should at least mark his life in the chapel at St Paul’s.
Fascinating. Disgusting he has no headstone.
Bet his family were very happy to have his money and home after he died but not the respect to give him a headstone. They should be ashamed of themselves
@@cazzawazza9553 you are so right. I tried contacting his children but there are to many phillips on social media. To have meant so much to this country and have no headstone is disgusting
A very Cool Gentleman loved his films. and charm. Barney Glasgow 😊
Me too Barney! He was brilliant! xxxx
He was a Charmer.
He most certainly was! xxxx
Thank you for this video as for your questioning shell-shock those who were to young to join at the start of the war but we're later called-up suffered shell-shock from the bombings & anti-aircraft guns

I'm now 69 and such as Leslie Phillips mark my time and what to me were the most wonderful days of Britain. So many have now gone and with them such a time of warmth.

Wonderful; God Bless
I hope so too!!! and I agree, it's wonderful that he is buried with his beloved parents xxxx

Many happy years spent watching Leslie Phillips in a variety of roles. The roles may have varied, yet his presence remains constant 🙏
Very much for me too! I can't even remember the first time I saw Leslie in a film - I think I must have been so young - he was just always there and often watched and enjoyed! xxxx
He turned in a wonderful performance in the third radio series of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, playing a disillusioned computer.
Oh I didn't hear that! I did watch the TV series though! xxxx
@BeautifulBadandBizarre It's not my favourite of the radio series, but I do listen to it sometimes just to hear his performance

Leslie Phillips should have been given a knighthood for his contribution to film, theatre and radio. The Navy Lark on the radio on Sunday afternoons used to have me in stitches..
I completely agree! Leslie Phillips made such a remarkable contribution across film, theatre, and radio, and his work on The Navy Lark was truly legendary. His comedic timing and charm brought so much joy to audiences. It’s a bit surprising he didn’t receive a knighthood for his exceptional career! XXXXX
Wonderful.

Love watching him in the navy lark film, a great british icon
My aunt was in a couple of stage productions with Phillips in the 50s. In her later years, I used to weave him into the conversation at some point each time I saw her with the inevitable and predictable result. The whole family including her `very` twin sister was in on this, but for some reason she never caught on. `Young Lesley` must have made quite an impression. Mind you any mention of Kenneth Williams and one or two others tended to have the same effect, but Phillips was the favourite.
Not too sure what she would have thought about the cat food tho`....
That's such a delightful story! It sounds like "Young Leslie" certainly did leave a lasting impression, becoming a staple in your family's conversations. It's amusing how certain names can evoke such strong reactions! As for the cat food mention, well, that might have been an unexpected twist in the tale (tail)! Thank you for your comment and for watching the video - much appreciated xxxx
Always remember Leslie in the Navy Lark on the Radio as well. It was part of my childhood along with the Clifferoe Kid. Leslie was always great in the Carry On films.

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Shar, I’ve just finished watching a re-run of an episode of “Midsomer Murders”, here in Australia. I had a feeling that one of the characters was Leslie Phillips, which the credits confirmed! How coincidental is that? Of course, he was the suave gent, with an eye for the ladies, appreciating one’s “magnificent ankles”! 😂 I was waiting for him to say, “Ding-dong”…😆 He played the part really well and, as you highlighted, he was an outstanding actor.♥️

How exciting that you had the chance to spot Leslie Phillips in Guildford! I'd have loved to have seen him! Guildford does seem to have its fair share of celebrity sightings, doesn't it? On a personal note, I once had the pleasure of attending a book signing with Nigella Lawson there a few years back. Hello Shar🙋♀️ What a detailed and wonderful tribute to Leslie Phillips in his Centenary year. One film 🎥 I remember seeing at the cinema was “Scandal” where Leslie Phillips played the part of Lord Aster. Another interesting video 📹💐
Oh YESSSSS! Scandal!!!! Hi Alison! Thank you as ever for your lovely comment - it's always appreciated! and Scandal is one of my favourite 'modern' films! Leslie did so much in his life time, and he was so versatile, I think people sometimes forget that - from stage, to comedy to drama - a true professional! xxxx I hope all is good with you and that you're enoying the weekend xxxx
That was a kind and affectionate tribute Shar, thank you and well done. I didn't know anything about his humble origins and that voice training certainly made him sound like no one else from Chingford I've ever known. The missed funeral thing seemed totally out of character and clearly he later regretted it very much. But he didn't deserve the tragedies that befell him later on and made a positive impact throughout his life, ensuring he was much loved in every sense.
Thank you so much Michael - I literally grew up loving Leslie and thoroughly enjoying his screen presence - and as a frequent visitor to Chingford, I have to admit I don't know anyone who sounds quite like he did lol I think as far as the funeral was concerned - we all make mistakes and sometimes they are big ones - I don't know if you know, but Diana Dors didn't go to her fathers funeral and she said she always regretted it - she was in America when he died xxxx
I absolutely loved Leslie Phillips, especially his "ding dong" moments 😂. I watched a serious crime drama film yesterday where he played a detective . He was brilliant and just as believable as in his comedy roles. What a brilliant actor.
Me too!!!! He was a great acted - very professional and so talented - both in comedy and drama ❤❤❤
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I'm going to be saying ding dong for the next week, you realise 😂

That was absolutely brilliant to watch.
I've read his autobiography and, as you say, it's excellent.
Also, how kind to also lay flowers on his parents grave. Very touching.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! What a wonderful autobiography - it kept me totally engaged from beginning to end! ❤
It was a pleasure to leave flowers for his parents - he was such an amazing entertainer who brought so much happiness with his performances! ❤❤❤
I thought Carry on Teacher was Leslie's best of the carry ons...and the way he handled pronouncing the Teachers name Mrs Alcock and "getting one over" the censor,"I just flattened it and used my facial expression...he(the censor) he did us a favor" RIP Leslie Auckland New Zealand 2024
Absolutely, "Carry On Teacher" is indeed a classic in the series, and Leslie Phillips' performance as the smooth-talking Mr. Alistair Grigg is iconic. His clever handling of the name Mrs. Alcock, along with his witty facial expressions! Joan Sims was absolutely brilliant and I loved the glimpses of a young Carol White! Thank you for sharing your memories from Auckland, New Zealand! xxxxx

I've not seen your chanel for some time, and I've missed not watching as your videos are lovely. This video is no exception, and I'm happy to say I saw Leslie Phillips at the Bridgewater hall in Manchester, when he compared a musical evening, it was really good, he constantly made jokes about the conductor! My Mum asked to read his book after me, but I wouldn't let her, it was far too racey!!!

Such a lovely video, having watched Leslie in so many films over my life time I was sad when I heard he had passed away, and the loss of such a wonderfully talented man. RIP Leslie Philips 💐
Thank you so much! Yes!!!! That's how I felt, I've watched him in flims for longer than I can remember and I've always enjoyed his performances - and I'm an avid re-watcher and every time I enjoy them more!!! xxxxx
what wonderful story of one of our true greats. a true legend missed but immortalized on screen to be revisited whenever needed.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - I agree, Leslie has left us such a wonderful legacy of work on the screen and in writing! xx
Nicely done my dear, so glad you didn't use one of those robot narators :)
Oh my goodness! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your comment - having recently received one that complained about my pronunciation 😅 you have brought joy to my evening! I'm glad you enjoyed the video - thank you on every level! xxxx
I really enjoyed this. Leslie Phillips is a favourite actor of mine.
When his autobiography, "Hello" was published in 2007, he was interviewed on stage at the National Theatre and signed copies of his book afterwards. I was there and still have my signed copy. In person, he was everything you would expect him to be. Immaculately blazered, the first thing he did when he walked out on stage was lean forward towards the audience, whilst stroking his moustache and say "well hello".
Leslie Phillips should have received a knighthood. There have been less deserving acting recipients. He went unrewarded, too, for his role in "Venus" (2008) with Peter O'Toole. O'Toole got more of the plaudits, but Leslie Phillips's was the finer performance.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience meeting Leslie Phillips and your thoughts on his incredible talent - I wish I'd been there! I would have loved to have met Leslie. It sounds like a memorable event, and I completely agree about his deserving a knighthood. His performances, especially in 'Venus,' are truly outstanding. Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching!!! xxxxx
I'm from Chingford but none of Leslie's charm rubbed off on me. Brilliant video as always, thoughtful, charming and well presented. Thank you....
Ah! I am reasonably familiar with Chingfords as I have friends that lived there - and would visit often - have enjoyed some great nights out in the local restaurants! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it's much appreciated and I would say you are very charming! xxxx
Greetings from Australia! I’m a New subscriber! I came across your tribute to Charles Hawtrey and really love your narration style and well written and researched scripts. I’m looking forward to watching your other videos! ❤
Thank you so much for your kind words and for subscribing! 😊 Greetings from the UK to Australia! I'm really glad you enjoyed the tribute to Charles Hawtrey, and it means a lot to hear that you appreciate the narration and research. I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos as well-there's plenty more to come! Thanks again for your support! ❤ xxxx
Unbelievable that this wonderfully talented man, liked and known by so many does not have a headstone for his grave. Is there an actors guild that could organise something or even his family have one erected. Thank you for such another lovely tribute.❤
Leslie Phillips was indeed a beloved figure, and it's understandable to hope for a proper memorial. While I can't speak to the specifics of his grave, I share your appreciation for his talent and impact. It's heartening to see the love and respect for him. Thank you for watching and for your kind words about the video. ❤️ xxxx
Another fine British actor that enlightened many a comedy film especially in the 60s, thanks Shar.
He was superb I agree - I enjoy his films as much today as ever I did! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! It's very appreciated xxxxx
