A short folk horror story about the Scottish witch trials. You play the role of a witch finder. Speak to the locals and sort their truths from their lies. On the last morning a witch must hang, best you know who by then.
It says a lot about the tone of a game when your two options for interacting with people are "talk" and "torture" lol
Yeah this is not a light-hearted game to chill with while you have a hangover or anything, haha. Just to be clear as well this is intended as a condemnation of the witch hunts and organised religion in general. I'm not a supporter of either of those things!

I love games that look like this. Very unsettling looking but you can't take your eyes off it. The closest game I can compare it to is probably Silent Hill or something.

Style of that last scene is very Nightmare before Christmas or even Bump in the night (very old kids show)
It's art style reminds me of that other game trailer that came out a year ago called spirit of the samurai, interesting to see more stop motion type games.
Reminds me of an old Vincent Price film, "Witchfinder General", where he plays a historical witchfinder/inquisitor, Matthew Hopkins.
Well perceived, it's one of the strongest influences on this!

UA-cam randomly recommended the video, so I gave it a look and I've now added the game to my wishlist. As an Englishman that once visited Scotland, I expect it to be rather nostalgic... But seriously, Edinburgh was amazing, and walking past the castle at 2am was something to behold.

I'm a Darkwood fan and this game is a lot different from it, but all that grayness and the darkness, the woods, the villagers and the horrors that this witch hunter will dace, reminded me of that polish gem.

You're right, it's a completely different kind of game. This is more of a short visual novel/point and click. But I adore Darkwood, it's the holy grail of folk horror games and there's no doubt it has influenced my style. Thanks for your support!

Thanks Airdorf! Is that the Witcher song? I've seen a few people mention that and a song from Disciples 3 as well.. I think they just used the same vocal sample pack - Forgotten Voices: Barbary. It's one of the few Gaelic language sample instruments out there so everyone seems to use it.

I wonder if the text couldn’t use a texture or something to help it blend in with the art style. Or a font that looks more inky. Right now it stands out as being very digitally imposed on top of the more painterly art
I used a high-def font this time as people had complaints about the pixel font from the 20202 version. I've changed it since this trailer to a pixel based font again but it's more legible than the last one.

Oh I remember, I loved this game! Are you remaking it, adding new content etc or are you simply porting it on steam? In both cases I'm excited! I love this game, it's been on my mind since I played it a few years ago.
Thank you for your kind words! It's a complete remake in UE5 instead of Game Maker this time, and almost every feature is expanded in some way. It's still a very small game but far more complete than the original jam version was.

I can't wait to see it, piecing together the story was super fun, even if I haven't seen videos back then which "got it" you know, who understood the concept of the "Witch" ;), I think I understood what you were doing but I'm not spoiling that here, it was too fun to piece it all together myself. The ambiance, how you wrote the story were really cool and the art, my god, the pixel art, especially of those nightmares were absolutely amazing man, I really can't wait to see this new and improved version.

This looks fantastic, very excited to see where you're going with it! We need more stop motion horror, La Casa Lobo is one of my favorites.
I've still got to watch that! It's such a perfect medium for it but so time consuming to make. I've seen a big resurgence of it in short indie films at festivals I've been to this yearso hopefully we will see a similar trend in games too!

Practical effects, my beloved.
Technically it's all CGI, animated in Blender and rendered in UE5. But I'm following a lot of the same principles if it was practical like moving each part slightly per frame rather than rely on the computer interpreted frames.

A few people mentioned that in 2020 when I released the jam version of the game, but I'm not that familiar with the Witcher soundtrack. They also mentioned Disciples 3 as well. I think all 3 are just using the same vocal sample pack Forgotten Voices Barbary since it's one of the few Gaelic vocal packs out there.

The verses in the song are also used in 'Fields of Ard Skellig' from The Witcher 3. I still can't remember what the original song is called.
It's a mix of samples from a Gaelic vocal library pack. They are both based on the song Fear a' Bhàta (The Boatman).

Hopefully I can learn to port to Switch one day! It runs on a Steam Deck so the requirements should be pretty low. I was thinking about porting to android if you have an android phone or tablet.

There are quite a few other people mentioning this in the comments. It's sample from a Gaelic vocal pack called Forgotten Voices Barbary. So parts of the melody are from a traditional song called Fear a' Bhàta (The Boatman) along with other clips from that pack. My guess is either the Witcher song is using the same sample pack or it's also based on that folk song.
This kinda reminded me of Nosferatu. Terrifying. I like it

Although I like the artstyle and the detective - witch hunter aspect, as well as the information gathering method of attaining clues by interacting with residents, I'm a bit held back by the edgyness of the only second choice next to talk being torture. It seems too sadistically detailed for no apparent reason rather than shock factor, although I cannot judge its gameplay value, I would like to have a historical and/or contextual reason (rather than reinforcing the atmosphere which is already dark enough) for it being such a prominant element of the game.
I understand where you are coming from, and I have been very concerned that people might misread my intentions with this game. I'll make it clear from the start that this game is intended as a condemnation of witch trials and torture.
Without spoiling too much that's kind of the point of the game, that torture is sadistic and only leads to the victim telling them what they want to hear.
My dad was a tour guide across Scotland and I have had an interest in and researched our history for years. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable on 17th century Scotland and the height of the witch trials. The atmosphere and details in the game are heightened for artistic reasons but it is all heavily based in the actual practices and torture methods employed by these religious fanatics on innocent people.
If you are unsure about the game then you can check out the free version I created in 2020 for a game jam. It's on itchio and will give you an idea if this game will be for you or not.

Looks so nice! I heard about this game from Lucy of the Friends Per Second podcast. Also, I can't help but notice the similarity of the music with one of the OST from Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Does that mean both these tracks are taking the melody from an existing folk song or something? If so, I'd love to know what it is! Thanks!
Hey, thanks for letting me know! It's always fun to find out where the influx of new subscribers were coming from. Really cool she gave it a shout-out on the podcast! I'm not sure which of the tracks form the Valhalla OST you are referring to as I've not played that one, but people also said it was similar to Witcher 3 and Disciples 3 so maybe the samples have been used elsewhere. It's a mix of different vocal samples from Forgotten Voices: Barbary so not a specific folk song but lines from a few different ones.

Yes, the original was made in 2020 for a game jam in GameMaker. This is remade from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 and all parts of it expanded. It's still going to be a fairly small game but much more complete than the original.

You didn't notice all the other comments mentioning it and me explaining that we both just used the same vocal sample pack library? It's also in Disciples 3 and probably lots of other games/films that needed Gaelic language vocals as it's pretty much the only sample pack out there for it.
