  • Join me in the hold at SORIN, the IAF for RNAV/GNSS RW34 into Dublin (EIDW/DUB) as I talk you through how to fly an RNAV Approach using my companies operating procedures.
    This tutorial contains some basic information about RNAV/GNSS Approaches. I’ve provided a link to Eurocontrol where you can find a very handy two-page PDF factsheet explain some of the theory/legality behind these types of Approaches.
    www.eurocontrol.int/sites/def...
    As I always stress my tutorials contain one way of operating this brilliant aircraft. Some operators and tutorials might show you a different procedure or setup!
    Any questions feel free to ask!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    All guidance in my tutorials are based on operating procedures from a real operator, I have almost 4000 hours on the 737-800 (The real one) and I'm also a full-time Instructor working in a full motion Level D simulator.
    The aim of this channel is to provide realistic, informative and useful information to help you enhance your flight simulation experience by following me apply real world operating procedures in the PMDG NGX.

    I have recently returned to flight simming after a long hiatus. It's been quite an experience. I found your tutorials thorough, fast paced and reflective of the frenetic work that must go through the Captain's and F/O's mind during certain portions of the flight. I look forward to watching more of your content as I "get back up to snuff" on my flight simming skills. Thank you.

    After 4 months I am back to this excellent video. That are many UA-cam videos on RNAV approaches, but very few did it right. Of course, this is one of the maybe two or three videos did it professionally. I found in most RNAV videos, the pilots didn't check or set RNP, didn't set MCP altitude to DA and then with 300 feet of that bug it up to the missed approach altitude, and didn't cycle the FD buttons for guidance in case of going around. So, thumbs up once again to the caption flightdeck2sim!

    Your videos are absolutely amazing. I recently lost my medical and have always love flying so I was quite heartbroken when I realized I’d never get farther than a Cessna and my PPL. I’ve always enjoyed fsx but since my medical got pulled I’ve really started putting a lot of effort into it with learning procedures on my complex aircraft and even joined Southwest virtual.

    i love the way you say this. It's been one of my favourite mottos and feels like im addicted to it. I was training to become a real world pilot when my medical was not approved, so simming the 737 is the closest I'll get to flying the real thing. Excellent video - from a former Ryanair Capt, now with a UK 737 operator. One quick q - as it’s a precision approach, we don’t recycle the FD’s as they are continuing to provide accurate guidance below minima, same as an ILS, and will provide missed approach guidance once TOGA is pressed, but not sure of your current operators procedures now - if that has changed there? Good work, very informative for students coming through, or those looking to brush up.

  • @MrSqueeze737
    @MrSqueeze737 4 місяці тому

    Nice tutorial bud. At about 12:40 the reason why VNav gave out when you set missed approach is; because you need to be at least 1000ft above field elevation to set MAA or else it will level off. Your field elevation is 202 ft which means you should set MAA at 1202 ft but you set it at 1260 there about. The sim was actually spot on. To be on a safe side, just set MAA at 300 ft above MDA. Otherwise great job. I’m a 737 pilot.😊

    Hi.
    First of all - thanks for plenty of nice videoes.
    Why do you select SPD INTV (08:36) when in VNAV?
    Should'nt it keep the speed restrictions by itself, when in VNAV and the speed restrictions are in the FMC already?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 років тому +1

      Hi T.E.
      You're quite right, it will update but the A/T will only add thrust when below TGT speed. By selecting SPD INTV you have direct control over your target speed and the A/T will maintain exactly that speed.

    Am sure you keep "ARM" engaged in the real world? For TO/GA? Well in the PMDG FMC settings, go to simulation and I believe on the last page you can change the auto throttle over-ride system; from "NEVER" to "WHEN AUTO THROTTLE IS ARMED", this allows you to have full controls of throttles yet allow the system to still be in the "ARM" position. Hope that's a tip to help! But, for all I know they might un-arm it IRL, who knows, but you haha :P

    Amazing channel, congrats!!! Can you tell us how close the PMDG 737 is to its real life counterpart when it comes to landing? The technique, the speed, flare and touchdown?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому +3

      Hi Eduardo, thanks and welcome!
      The PMDG does feel a little "floaty" but the 737 does have a natural tendency to float if you're flying just a few knots above your target speed on final when initiating the Flare.
      If you start "checking" and your speed is VREF or less the real aircraft will land quite firmly. This will also be the case if you reduce thrust too early, especially landing with Flap 40 due to the significant increase in drag.
      Small inputs using a computer joystick would involve a far larger input using the control column so the tendency to flare using flight sim is greater. Both in real life and in the sim if you initiate the CHECK, CLOSE, HOLD correctly and the correct height/speed it will settle quite nicely within the touchdown zone.
      I don't know if you have seen but my "Landing Technique" tutorial goes into some detail!

    Hey, new to the channel but I wanted to say these videos are immensely helpful. I'm really impressed how close PMDG got the aircraft coming from a professional pilot. I was wondering also if you could explain the difference between certain RNAV approaches that use X, Y, and Z variants. Is this just an American thing or is it also found in Europe? Thanks!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому

      Thanks ImagenNoReligion, glad you enjoy them and welcome to my channel 👍🏼 Yes for what is essentially an entertainment product it's a incredibly accurate rendition of the real aircraft. Good enough to accurately apply real world procedures.
      You can find different letters (X,Y, Z etc) assigned not just to RNAV approaches to the same runway but to NPA's and ILS's as well. It's usually when there are different approaches to establish onto the procedure and/or different missed approach procedures based on different navigational aids.

    I have a few questions. Firstly, you do not use APP in this RNAV approach (as it was commented already), maybe this is the reason why the FMC was not in "approach logic" and you was unable to set MAA? Secondly, I read somewhere that flaps should be set one notch at a time and you set it directly from 15 to 40. What is the best (real life) practice? Maybe "one notch" rule applies only for retracting, not for extending? And last thing, what is FD recycle you do before landing? I haven't seen such routine in any other tutorial.
    Your tutorials are really great! Thanks!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +5

      I admr0z!
      With regards to arming APP on an RNAV approach this is for aircraft fitted with the IAN (Integrated Approach Navigation) mode, our fleet are not fitted with this option and I've deselected it in the PMDG options.
      I believe in this case the PFD will annunciate G/P (glide path) instead of G/S (glide slope). Flying IAN requires proper equipment (also licensing supposedly). It allows you to use the LPV minimums on the chart.
      Approach logic is independent of IAN approaches and is a function of the FMC. It activates when you're within 2nm of the first waypoint on the approach or less than 2000ft above the airfield elevation.
      Secondly wherever you read that flaps should be set one notch at a time is not required. So long as you're below the max flap placard speed for each setting you can go straight to that flap setting. The same applies for retraction.
      In real life on approach we usually go F1 - F5 - Gear Down F15 - F30. Sometimes if you're landing with F40 and close to your max landing weight you will likely have to use F25 and/or F30 as an intermediate setting to help reduce your airspeed. All G/A's go straight to FLAP 15 or FLAP 1 if single engine.
      Recycling the F/D's on a NPA ensures you get the correct guidance when reaching the missed approach altitude in the event of a go around.
      Good luck!
      FD2S.

    Hello Captain .. What about "App" mode usage. What benifit it adds to Rnav .. What conditions compel the pilot to go for "IAN" Instead of RNAV?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому

      Hi Kk,
      With regards to IAN (Integrated Approach Navigation), our fleet are not fitted with this option and I've deselected it in the PMDG options and I know very little about it!
      I believe in this case the PFD will annunciate G/P (glide path) instead of G/S (glide slope) after arming APP. Flying IAN requires proper equipment and approval and allows you to use the LPV minimums on the chart.

      With regards to IAN (Integrated Approach Navigation), our fleet are not fitted with this option and I've deselected it in the PMDG options and I know very little about it!
      I believe in this case the PFD will annunciate G/P (glide path) instead of G/S (glide slope) after arming APP. Flying IAN requires additional equipment and approval and allows you to use the LPV minimums on the chart.

      RNAV Approach to LNAV/VNAV minima is classed as an approach with approved vertical guidance so the minima is a DA so no need to add 40ft

      Hi KEITHGEE1000,
      It is impossible to update the GP angle on a published approach, they should match the chart. If you were to fly an RNAV approach the tolerance is 0.1 degrees otherwise you'd have to fly something else (then report it!)

    @flightdeck2sim Is there any rule (I realize it might be operator dependent) about when you can set the altitude on the MCP to the down to the minimums? Is it after the IAF, or within a thousand feet of level off, or no rule but there are best practices? I learned for myself practicing, you definitely can't wait until the FAF or until you're in VNAV ALT or you'll be immediately high on profile when it doesn't descend.
    Must be gratifying to know this video helps so many, years on. I was in real trouble if ATC told me to fly anything other than an ILS before tutorials like these.

    • @flightdeck2sim

      The A/T and A/P disconnect switch respectively only needs to be pushed once to disconnect the system.
      A/P Disconnect - 1 push disengages A/P and sounds the A/P Disconnect Warning Horn and A/P P/RST red light to flash
      2nd Push cancels horn and flashing red light.
      A/T Disconnect - 1 push disengages A/T and A/T P/RST light will flash red. 2nd Push cancel flashing red light.

    Nice but what's the difference between r-nav approach and vor-loc approach?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +3

      Hi Mattia,
      VOR & LOC are both in itself two different types of Approaches.
      A VOR Approach uses just that, a VOR radial to fly towards the runway and then land.
      A LOC Approach using the Localiser off an ILS to fly to the runway and then land.
      These both rely on ground based navigational aids to be tuned and backed up to ensure we're descending on the correct profile (Even though on the 737 we use VNAV for both approaches which uses the Navigational Database to vertically fly the correct profile)
      An RNAV/GNSS approach does not rely on ANY Ground Based Navigational Aids, you just use the Navigational Database in the FMC and monitor this using GPS.
      Hope this helped answer your query!

    So what’s the difference between LNAV/VNAV approaches such as this, LPV and RNP approaches. To me RNP approaches on charts (Quito or Paro are good examples) allow the aircraft to fly through mountains following curves and has to be extremely accurate where as LNAV/VNAV is bunch of straight lines. And I guess these still can’t beat ILS when it’s extremely foggy

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 років тому

      Hi Thomas,
      LNAV/VNAV are just roll and pitch modes the aircraft use to fly an approach in the FMC, the FMC is still able to generate curved lines and radius to fix tracks and is extremely accurate, We use it to fly RNAV, VOR, NPA approaches at my outfit and can be just as accurate as an ILS!

      I'll bet a bug. Bug detection is largely based on how much you use a system in any software. Since ILS is the vast vast majority of what people do in this kind of plane, either in real life or especially in sims, then even fairly competent and knowledgeable beta testers might not encounter the exact circumstances that would lead to this bug.
      RNAV logic probably has some hiccup in it in this particular PMDG plane.

    Great tutorial. The FMC was programmed to fly at 180kts for INTOP, but it seems the bug stayed at the flaps up speed, which is 20kts higher, so you had to use the speed intervene button and bug it down there. Did this happen because of the flaps operation?

    • @wesleyyin
      @wesleyyin 7 років тому

      Also, what'll happen if you push the APP button on the final approach?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +2

      Hi Wotao
      Had I been in VNAV PTH with the speed window closed the aircraft would've bugged the next flap placard speed automatically after extending flaps.
      With the Speed Window open it should revert to VNAV SPD but because, as you correctly pointed out, the flaps are extended it stays in VNAV PTH allowing you to directly set the placard speed. It's your job to make sure you bug the appropriate speed (and any speed restrictions) but the important thing is that VNAV PTH is still engaged and following the Vertical Path which is required for this Approach.

    • @wesleyyin
      @wesleyyin 7 років тому

      I just Googled it. Push APP on an RNAV approach will activate the IAN (Integrated Approach Navigation) mode, which a virtual ILS. The PFD will annunciate G/P (glide path) instead of G/S (glide slope). Flying IAN requires proper equipment (also licensing supposedly). It allows you to use the LPV minimums.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +2

      From what I understand this is something to do with IAN Approaches and VANP (Vertical Actual Navigational Performance) I believe then you can use the APP mode to fly an RNAV Approach.
      Our fleet are not fitted with this option (and I've deselected NPS scales within PMDG) so I can't really help you, we only use APP mode for an ILS Approach with my operator

      You're quite right, the last segment is fully visual. Looking at the chart for the existing RNAV procedure we would continue to the MAPt (Missed Approach Point which is D5.5 AZR) and continue the approach visually. We would to fly a track of 303 and descent to 1000ft (using V/S and HDG SEL) turn final and then disconnect A/P and A/T and recycle F/D's.

      I can tell you exactly thanks to my electronic log book!
      Over the last 5 years flying the -800 in Europe...
      Approximately 90% - Precision Approach
      686 ILS (Including CAT - 2/3) approaches and a total of just 2 Approaches with RNAV/GNSS with vertical guidance (Classed as a Precision Approach) like in this tutorial
      Approximately 8% - Non Precision Approach
      Includes VOR, NDB, LOC and RNAV to LNAV minima (Classed as a NPA)
      Approximately 2% - Visual Approach
      14 Visual Approaches and 6 Circle to Land
      This is a fair estimate of Europe. Had I been based at an airport that doesn't have an ILS the statistics would obviously vary but there are only a few airports which have no precision approach available. ILS is still very much the norm but RNAV/GNSS Approaches are/will become far more common in time.
      Hope you enjoyed the stats!

      Mmmm very interesting Must be difficult to keep familiar with such procedures if you dont do them often enough. So PMDG is good for you too :)

      Hi Oleg,
      It's a function seldom used which turns the 737 into an Airbus. You essentially fly the autopilot using the control column, you set an attitude and/or bank angle and it holds it nicely without trimming. Will explain its use in a tutorial at some point!

    Is this approach much different from an" RNAV (RNP)" approach? For instance this one for Oslo: avinor.no/globalassets/_microsite/ais-portal/aip-sup/en_sup_a_2016_021_en.pdf
    Also known as an RNAV Visual? (Yes I know the NGX doesn't do RF legs, but navigraph has interpolated the radiuses)

      RNAV RNP can be flown the same way, it's a operator approval requirement to fly RNP with the required equipment (we only have GNSS)

      Hi Doesn’t Exist.
      You can find a lot of information online which you can reference, I’m using our OPS Manual which contains all the PANS OPS criteria regarding RNP.
