  • A family clashes to pay for dinner.
PRETTY DOESN'T HURT is used with permission from Jennifer Rau. Learn more at www.prettydoesnthurtfilm.com.
Mindy is fresh off a divorce when she goes on a trip with her 11-year-old daughter Julia and her single sister Jess. At the hotel, Mindy meets a musician named Steve, exchanging flirtatious glances in the hall. When her sister Jess collides with the pair in the hallway, Steve invites the whole family out to dinner, though it's not clear which sister could end up with Steve.
The dinner is fun, with Steve enjoying the company of both Mindy and Jess. But when Mindy and Jess make a bet about whether or not Steve will pay for dinner, the two sisters reveal fundamental differences in how they see the world, with Julia caught in the middle.
Directed by Jennifer Rau and written by Brooke Berman, this short drama takes the question of who will pay for dinner as its jumping-off point for a story that's equal part family drama and coming-of-age story. The action is primarily driven by Mindy and her sister Jess, whose perspectives on dating manners and mores differ, but young Julia is also taking everything in, learning about the unspoken rules about women and men in a painfully poignant way.
The film has a slice-of-life look and feel, with unadorned, naturalistic visuals and a simplicity in the visual storytelling that lets the characters, dialogue and relationships come to the fore. Mindy and Jess are very different women. Though they are sisters, they have underlying beliefs that shape their interactions and ways of seeing differently. The ways they interact with Steve show their different ways of operating around men and what they think men and women should do. Jess is more independent-minded and thinks traditional ideas about men and women don't really work or apply anymore. But Mindy is more traditionally feminine, with ideas of what women and men should be and do, whether that's turning on the charm in any interaction with a man or expecting men to be "gentlemen."
The sisters' differences carry over into their dinner later with Steve, whose motives and thoughts are not revealed, either to the sisters or to the audience. Actors Jenny Maguire and Jenna Krasowski play Mindy and Jess, respectively, conveying both the long-time connection and sometimes flinty familiarity of sisters with significant differences. These become more pointed when triangulated with Steve, played by actor Andy Lucien with a relaxed affability that could be read as both romantic interest but also innate warmth. Mindy makes a bet on whether or not Steve will pay for dinner, though the more independent-minded Jess thinks it's ridiculous.
Watching all this is Mindy's daughter Julia, played by young performer Keeley Karsten. The film shifts to the daughter's perspective as the climax and denouement play out between Mindy, Jess and Steve, in a painfully awkward scene. What resonates -- and what we take as PRETTY DOESN'T HURT winds to its conclusion -- is not just how loaded the question of paying for dinner has become, but also a sense of missed opportunity it creates in the story. Rigid roles and practices might ease anxiety and make things more clear in dating and life, but sometimes it comes at a cost. No doubt Julia will reflect on this as she gets older, as she decides who she wants to be and what kind of world she wants to live in.

The sister is angry because her prettier sister lives in a world of privilege due to her prettiness and not in the world of experience of not so pretty people. Because things didn't go her (pretty sister) way (him paying) and getting embarrassed for being outed by her daughter for being like that, she chose to leave and also passing her not so pretty sister off as a consolation prize. This disrespecting both her sister and the man.

Everything would have been perfectly fine if the kid was respectful enough to not manipulate the bet while putting an awkward pressure on the guy.
Also there's a high chance that she didn't even notice about the consolation prize thing she did because her intention was truly to make that guy like her sister since the beginning.

I was one of those kids. The little girl was just trying to show how grown up she was by participating in the conversation and didn't know that what was said shouldn't be repeated. In her defense, her mom and aunt didn't act like anything was wrong with making a bet about the guy. The adults learned nothing, but the little girl will never forget it.

That was a really crappy thing to do to the guy. Ruined his night, and probably left him mistrustful of "pretty" women for a long time. The fair thing to do would be 3 separate checks: 1 for the man, 1 for the woman and her kid, and 1 for the other woman.

Exactly. I don't mind them having preferences for the men paying and even betting on the situation, but to really expect the man to pay is prejudiced.
I was really happy for all adults until that happened. The ending really sucks, because of how unhappy the characters were, and how vague the message is. I think that there is a chance that film is criticizing men still.

I agree that Mindy’s self-entitled attitude is crap, but he did invite all three of them on a date. The sister made assumptions about his ability to pay, which is also crap. Gentlemen do pay for dates. However, ladies don’t go on a date with a man who she is not somewhat inclined to. In this case, the question of who will pay should have been resolved before the meal. The sisters should not have been making bets about it.

If you expect people to pay for everything, then you'll start seeing men walking away from even basic invitations for group events.
If you like your rules, then start inviting men out, even though they are strangers, and have no intentions of returning the hospitality. I don't think that you'd do it, though, because you probably want to design the rules around women receiving.

I agree about the ending b/c the way the girl picked up the lipstick as if excitedly and inexplicably choosing her mother's way of life while still confused and saddened. I disagree the girl was 'running her mouth'. Ouch. she was just trying to learn the subtext like kids are supposed to but adults so often gaslight.
Asking if the dad was in the picture is just a way of seeing if she's available. A lot of single moms are treated invisible cuz a lot of guys of dating age don't want to be burdened with someone else's kid. This guy could've been a jewel b/c he showed he was okay with it.
Asking how to split the bill is awkward b/c it's about finding a person's intentions. "Let's go Dutch" or splitting the bill implies either 'thanks, but not interested' or 'maybe, but not ready to decide whether to go further or how far yet'. It basically sends the message of "I don't want to feel 'under obligation'." Letting him pay suggests you want to pursue it.
It's so awkward b/c nobody wrote these rules and everybody plays by their own. The mom showed she was just trying to use the guy as a sugar daddy when he asked about the bill but she was accidentally outed for it by her daughter's reaction. She basically implied to the guy, 'I got no use for your broke ass. Here, you can have my sister'.

I found the subject matter of this short film disturbing. Here we are in 2024 and some women think a complete male stranger should pay for your family’s meal. It is very generous and kind whenever someone treats you. No character judgement should be made if a man does not offer to pay for the meal if you are not on a romantic date. The young girl should be learning that no one needs to pay for her. If you don’t have money to go out then you stay home. Depending upon the financial state of some men it doesn’t matter how pretty you are. They might need to be blessed with a free meal due to limited finances.
I would appreciate seeing people work harder for themselves and not expect others to foot their bills.
Romantic relationships are different because someone is trying to impress you by being kind and generous.
When you don’t expect anything from someone you don’t have to worry about them feeling you need to return the favor sexually.😊

He was definitely interested in her flirting with him, he wanted to impress her - otherwise he would not suggest to a group of ANY strangers to dine together and would not have asked if she was single or not. He did not offer to dine together because he was bored killing time alone in his room, then the situation would be entirely different, - he was hoping for more. That is why he should pay, not because he is a male. Basically, he wanted to attract her by giving a good impression and he was paying for her time with the meal.

I agree. "Coffee, means 'low-key, casual, buy your own, no obligations, just figure out if your both interested in pursuing'. It's so much simpler. Dinner means "My treat."
This one was awkward b/c he asked what he thought was a single woman to have dinner, then finds out she's the mom, two more people invite themselves because they're a unit, they gotta go out and eat anyway so he's not sure if it's a date or if he's just suggested they eat where he's going to be eating and playing anyway.

If someone already knows they are willing to pay, they would mention it while asking, and not leaving it to the imagination.
If the person doesn't say that they intend to pay it simply means that they don't. So the person who is asked can answer depending on that, if they're okay with probably paying themselves or not.
There can always be a surprise at the end of the meal, but a person who accepts to come when paying was not mentioned should be ready to pay. That's very simple for me.

I get a couple of things from this. First, the girl (as children often do) serves as a metaphor for "what is said in darkness will come to light." People are often willing to think these things and reason around these things, but they will never communicate these things. The other thing I get is a lot of empathy for this girl. Between her mother and her aunt, she is given all of this conflicting information about how to enter the adult world, and she's still just a child. I don't really see this as a remark on traditional versus progressive values; I see it more as a remark on how adults arguing over these things and wrapping their children up in it creates a really confusing environment for kids where the rules just don't feel so clear, anymore.
The way all of this plays out is so painfully awkward, and I think a lot of that seems to be directed by the mother who is engaging in flirting gestures one moment and trying to wrap her sister up in the whole situation, the next, so that it's not even clear who is on this "date." (Which shouldn't even involve children!) I'd have put more blame on him for asking out a whole family, but it doesn't feel like he was trying to do that so much as awkwardly trying to continue the moment that was happening before Aunt and Daughter showed up. Mom comes off like a con artist trying to get a free meal for her and the girls for the night, so she is definitely the antagonist here.

Much more than that, I would lay out payment expectations and options (group of four, maybe I would suggest that I pay for everyone, and they pay the tip) (group of five or more, I would say "you wanna grab a bite with me? Everyone pays for themselves?") before the event. I certainly wouldn't wait until the bill came before clarifying who pays!!

In my opinion, this is not a matter of gender but who invites whom. If a woman invites a man to a dinner she should pay. But in many cultures women taking initiative are frowned upon, so it is not common at all. If the person who invites others expects that everyone pays for themselves this should be made clear at the moment of invitation.
He was hoping to spend time with the woman he liked, that is why he invited them. And he did have a good time by the looks of it. So, he was not paying for the dinner but for the time with her he enjoyed. She, clearly, was not that interested, even though she made it look as if she was. Misleading him into thinking he had a chance with her was very wrong of her. But this is what many pretty and charming people of both genders do, so, in a way, is to be expected. He took his chances and lost.

One: he foolishly invited them all without clarifying the payment situation up front, either when he made the invite (best) or before they all ordered at the burger joint. Very, very naive on his part. Two: the sister with the kid took full advantage without cautioning her daughter to keep her yap shut. The girl who made the bet was a simpleton and got exactly what she deserved. The little girl had no business spilling the beans regardless of the mother's failure to warn her. The guy should have thrown down cash for his own share and immediately split; he treated them far more kindly than they had any reason to expect.
