You video really helped me get my dryer going! I had all the wires, but an incorrect range outlet for some reason, which didn't work. I bought a four prong dryer outlet and just needed to know how to wire it so I could do some laundry. Thank you very much!
I bought a metal box does the ground have to be ground screwed to the box and then plugged into the new 4 prong my wire is short so can I just plug it straight into the 4 prong

4 wire is better but honestly it depends how your dryer is wired. You can always change the wiring on the appliance to accommodate how your receptacle is wired too
As always, such a precise video about the type of outlet. We are required in most areas with a 4 prog outlet unless an existing one is a 3 prong and if course matching up with the unit installed. I was told that some units require 4 prong depending on the features etc. Always check with the seller of the dryer unit and the codes for sure. Thank you again Josh. 👍🏻👍🏻
Good point David. If it already exist in the house then 3 prong is good to go. I have never used a three prong cord so I’m not sure if they are universal. Thanks a lot for stopping by!
@@TheExcellentLaborer that's why I let people know to ask the sales person what the unit calls for. It gets delivered then to find out it won't work. I had a customer tell me to just install the 4 prong on a 3 wire circuit and I won't take the responsibility. I've run a new line before for a unit in a basement that was all exposed which is okay with the right breaker as well. That's why I suggest the simple questions for people to ask if I can't be there to help. Take care Josh
My house currently is a four prong but my other house that I used to live in was a three prong. Because houses built before 1996 were three prong my old house was 1994, the one I'm in now is 1998. We had to swap the Dryer cord when we moved because we brought the Washer and Dryer with us.
the same 3 vs 4 prong 240 outlet issue holds true with electric ranges. Only differences are the breaker is usually 50 amps, 6-3 with ground Romex wire is used and the L shaped neutral plug moves to a straight one.
Because you asked us to I am commenting as to my remodel having a 4 terminal outlet because I wanted the most up to date outlet available for the dryer receptacle. We will find out once my Family coming to move into the 2 bedroom as to whether or not their Dryer is also a 4 prong plug in and if not will be up grading that as well. Laterz Leland
Perfect! Thank you! Do you have an opinion on the adapters for the newer 4 prong dryer cord (female side) to 3 prong (male) that plugs into the existing older style nema 10 outlet? I purchased the adapter to use temporarily, I am interested in your opinion on whether or not my new samsung front load set (dryer) will be protected enough with the adapter cord? I have to see if the home owner will be willing to allow me to make the change to a new 4 prong receptacle and if the wiring is 10-2 or 10-3 as you also mentioned.
Excellent video. I Might add if some dont know. The gold/brass terminals are always for the hot wires even on regular outlets. Brass does not expand and contract like other metals so it is used for the hot wires. The neutral wire Always goes to the silver terminal. this is an easy way to verify the correct terminal for hots. NOTE. this is important for polarity on 110 outlets also. On the front of the 110 outlet the brass will be the smallest slit the plug goes into. I believe this is done to save money since brass is more expensive then the silver
Thank you Josh. Very informative. Question: are the colors you mentioned for the wiring of this, standard throughout electrical installation? Curious. Love and Light.
First time viewer. Great video. I am working on finishing my basement and stumbled upon your channel. Our dryer is 4 prong, house was built in 2019 in Wisconsin. Cheers!
It's actually because some newer 220 appliances have features, like led display, which use 120v. The traditional 220 doesn't have a NUETRAL so it is only usable as 220. It does have a ground
Bro great video quick and precise! My daughter just had a house built in Texas and the ground is on bottom of the 4 prong outlet with the neutral on top. Which I think NFPA 70 started recommending ground on bottom in case the cord came partially out due to something falling on it, the ground would stay in? The way hers is positioned with ground on bottom it puts the dryer cord in a awkward position? Have they started making dryer cords to confirm to this position?
A bit late I know, but I have one small detail. For future reference, even though the wires are dead, keep the neutral away from the hot leads when connecting. Safety. 🙂
I have a cir 1978 house with 3 prong outlets in the dryer and oven. The neutral is only required for 120v service. The true difference between a neutral and a ground is which bar they are landed on in the breaker box. Since they are bonded together they are electrically identical. The installation details for the dryer 3 wire plug installation calls for the third wire, the neutral on the plug to be connected to the ground on the outlet. I am not comfortable if the dryer is using the ground to create 120v service instead of an internal 240/120 transformer. I have checked my old oven and the power supply did use a 240/120 transformer for the oven light. The circuit board was powered by a 240v to DC circuit.
I have a 3 prong house bought the 4 prong same one in this video but now realized the house doesn’t have a green ground wire. Only has 3 wires to put into a 4 prong. My solution I’m thinking is buy an extra wire and jump it from the white wire neutral to the green ground. Because currently have no power out of the 4 prong with the 3 wires hooked into it
Unfortunately, my outlet didn’t have color coded screws. They were all the same colour. Silver. But I followed the diagram on the box which showed which color wire goes where. Thanks. 😊

How do you know which wires go where? I just bought the plug to replace on the dryer (by recommendation from the home depot employee) but I figured the outlet would be easier for me to change instead so I'm going to go swap out for the outlet instead.
Good video. You don't need a Robertson (square drive) screwdriver, but it makes it easier because unlike a Philips bit or a straight bit, this bit won't cam out when torque is applied. It makes it easier to apply the correct torque.

There are prong adapters sold on Amazon. Mine works great. Dryer was a 3 prong and the outlet was 4. Very simple fix no rewiring!
Modern code wants 4 wire so there is access to 110v for the control electronics, without sending power down the ground.
