- Here we go again! Keeping our van in tip top shape is a full-time job. Lucky for us, where there is climbing, there is usually boondocking as well. We check out Land of the Lost near Arcata, California for some much needed rock climbing.

Our truck is a 2009 GMC Savana G3500 cut-away with a 12 ft box. We converted it into our tiny home on wheels and moved in May 2021 to travel North America for rock climbing, hiking, and outdoor adventures.

I (Moritz) gonna call home on Friday, the 24th, that's when Germans celebrate... and then Chiko and I are probably also gonna cook something nice that night.
It's nice to not have all the Christmas hectic for once. Although I think with the pandemic it's not as bad this year as well.

Yep, longer belt on the bigger Amp alternator.
I was able to use the smaller alternator's belt on my high amp Mechman alternator that has a smaller pulley. Even with the smaller pulley it was a tight fit.
When you get a chance, get your VIN etched into your catalytic converter, install a steel plate or cage around it, attach a steel cable from it to the frame and/or paint it with high-temperature fluorescent orange paint. You want to make it difficult and unique to deter thieves. It's worth it, especially as you drive around the US, and in Mexico.
P.S. : Dont go into Mexico.

Great to see your building new skills. 👍 FYI Overland expo west is in May. If you can find out which electric bike companies will be there you can ask them to sponsor your channel in exchange for a 4 month review of their bikes. Many times companies will lend equipment for a time as an extended review. Once your channel gets over 100k subs you'll be able to get companies to send you the bikes for free. Also find the heads of marketing on LinkedIn reach out and develop relationships. REI, Academy Sports, etc are also great options for your channel.
Even when you're not vanlifing and just have the van for family fun, it's constant tinkering. I did the alternator swap too, luckily without such troubles, but right after they stole the catalytic converter which left a 1m gap in the exhaust piping..that was fun to fix too. At least it teaches you skills 😜
Oh man I've heard about the cat being stolen! I'm actually afraid that could happen to us too. This truck has 3 of them, one for each bank of the engine and then a third one where the exhaust combines into the single exhaust pipe.
That Y-pipe is like $700 or so. It might also be all welded together, so we would have to find a shop.
@@RoadtoPitches yeah it's a nightmare here in Vancouver, all the repair shops that can fit my boxtruck are backed up with cat repairs for several months, that's how much they get stolen here, so I had to fix the pipe myself and I'm still on the fence if I get a new one. At least the insurance would cover it, otherwise it's way too expensive for the size of cat my 6.8 v10 needs.
Hope you don't get this problem, luckily if you live in the truck it's likely you'll notice someone cutting down there..
The upside I see is that insurance covers it, but yeah mechanics are always super busy. We basically took 2 weeks to get our parking breaks fixed (and the diff oil + axle seal changed).

Haha, yeah, probably it was really just worn out brushes and an other fix would've been to just switch them. But now I'm happy we have a bit more power and won't have to worry about the alternator anymore.

Yeah we watched Nomadland. The film was done really well but we struggled a bit with finding out what it wanted to tell us. There's a couple of themes in that movie but we couldn't really find a conclusion to them other than that it's just life.
@@RoadtoPitches Well, struggling to find meaning in a broken alternator is the human condition.
A suggestion: try shooting with a fisheye lens. Keep experimenting with your camera work.

It might have been, not quite sure though. Will have to take a closer look next time we encounter them.
Why didn't you just put the old alternator back in and used that into you get the belt you need for the new alternator you wouldn't be stuck .
