I started at the same time at 48 going on 49. Got the "cured" diagnosis from my oncologist/surgeon in October and decided I couldn't wait any longer to get after it. Loved every minute of it. The belt is still white but the bruises are blue......and black and yellow and purple. Love every minute of it. Changed my life
@@MikeB-rd5ci good for you. I’m on the other side of the public saftey realm. You will get smashed every day but it’s worth it. I can turn off the job and all the other life stuff for an hour or more and decompress! Stay with it as long as you can!!!!
I’m a 21 purple belt. And you might not read this, but for the people that are, this is a great example that is never too late. I used to lift weights 5x a week. I got into MMA or BJJ in specific because I also needed that extra challenge. I felt like weights wasn’t enough for me. Hopefully people take consideration that my guy right here is a great example that the best way of living is to NOT be in uour comfort zone. Oss my friends🤙🏻
Hey kid, just don’t stop. I started Judo at 58, BJJ at 59, now 64 and going strong. Brown belt in Judo blue, like you in BJJ. My goal black belt in both, hopefully my body holds out. Plus I’m a long haul truck driver, if I can do it anyone can. Roll on my friend.
First off, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You are absolutely right that it means something. The largest dropout rate in Jiu Jitsu is at White belt. The hours, pain, sweat, and constantly being the nail is a lot to go through, and you did it with flying colors. Second, I'll be 50 in a few months, and thankfully still rolling along (pun intended!). I completely agree with your assessment regarding age and starting something new. I can't imagine Jiu Jitsu would be at the top of the list to try hah. Thank you for encouraging the middle age folks out there to get after it. Again, congratulations!!!! Keep up the great work!!!!
I am a driven person, and am exhausted daily from multiple projects my wife and I tackle to better our position. Whenever I feel defeated, you (your channel) helps to keep pushing me further past my limit I’d normally stop at. Congrats on your achievement, much respect.
Great video. I’ve been watching for awhile. Your motivate me Nick. I started doing jiu jitsu back in January at 37 after a 10 year break. It’s rough. The AC joint, meniscus, arthritis in the back. They slow you down, humble you, and make you change your game. I just got out after 20 years and moved to Wrangell, AK where there was no jiu jitsu. I hooked up with the parks and rec and volunteered to start something. A 3 stripe white belt teaching jiu jitsu is crazy but I love it and I want to get that blue belt. It is a big deal getting that belt. Keep that content coming out man. You influence a lot more people then you’ll ever know. In weird corners of the World people are watching you and getting motivated to improve themselves and make the World better. Love ya brother.
Congrats Nick! I’ve enjoyed watching your journey! The 30 days video inspired me to to start getting committed and dragging myself to the mats when I really didn’t feel it! BJJ has had a tremendous impact on my mental game, depression, etc. keep grinding and making rad videos!
Super happy and proud for you! I'm on that same journey, prior Army door kicker in my early 40s, getting after it on the mats. Close to that 🟦 belt. It's a grind, but the journey has been awesome. Congrats brother.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssss! Congrats brother! Well deserved!! I have been eagerly waiting to hear that you got your blue belt after watching your 30 days series. Blue is a very big deal, and it feels good after all that sweat and pain - and then you go through it again on a different level. Just keep plugging away. Even bad days in Jiu Jitsu are good days all things considered. I'm more bummed if I miss a session even if my Jiu Jitsu sucked - and it sucks often. Great job, man!!
Awesome brother!!! I got my bjj black at 39 and began at 15! had to stop for over a decade but it was more satisfying than my harvard masters degree for sure!!! Congratulations!!!!
I started training BJJ when I was 15. Got my blue belt at 17 and my purple at 20. Now I'm 23 and have three stripes on the purple belt. Loved every second of it and if I could do it all over again I absolutely would 10,000 times over. I'll be training jiujitsu for life until the day I expire. I'm in this grind for the long haul and I have the up most respect for anyone who's willing to put in the work and train their ass off no matter what their age. Congrats Nick and keep it up. No regrets whatsoever.
Got into Jiu-jitsu the beginning of this month! Glad I did , wish I would have trained while I was in the army which I did but not seriously like I am now to get back in shape. Congratulations! Que Viva
Damn bro. Just found your channel. I’m a former Army Infantry dude. 37. Just started my journey last September. Loving the BJJ life. Great community indeed.
I started at 40 years old. That was almost 13 years ago. My advice is to realize you won't lose skill by taking more time between training. Your gut tells you to train every day, or even twice a day. It's actually counter-productive. Let yourself heal up between sessions. Train no more than a few days per week. The skill/technique will come just as fast, or faster.
I started at 34 as well. In 40 now and still going hard at it. Whatever you do stick with it, you will be a different person by the end of it I promise.
I’m 38 and a 0 stripe white belt, that’s trained for 6 months so far. I’ve already had 3 injuries so far, including one I’m recovering from as we speak. I definitely understand why people at this age or older don’t start new/difficult things. I’m healed enough to train lightly, but can’t roll again yet. Needless to say, I’ve changed gyms, but am continuing to train. Hoping to be able to avoid major injuries and be able to do this long term. The injuries have made me rethink this journey though. 🤕😔
Tap early, tap often. Injuries will happen but many can be avoided if you leave your ego at the door. Just tap and reset. I just earned my blue belt a couple of weeks before my 47th bday. Also don’t roll with anyone who doesn’t give a crap about your well being. Position before submission! You should be able to tap multiple times in a 20 minute session and walk away mostly intact to roll the next day or day after if you have good partners.
45 year old white belt, started 2 months ago. I too am trying to learn the skill of staying healthy. I hope you can find a better training environment than before and are able to resume your training with enthusiasm!
@@okorion75 So far so good at the new gym. A lot more focus on fundamentals, technique instead of strength, and safety. I’m still too injured to roll, but I’ll continue taking the classes until I’m healed enough to roll.
I started at the age of 39. I’m am an emergency room nurse and not in shape at all. it has been beyond tough. I am still day by day just trying to survive.
Good deal man. Bravo! Don't get the blue belt blues. It's a real thing. Blue is one of the best belts. You really learn what you will do through your whole Jitsu career, and how your body wants to move. Everyone is different and no one's Jitsu ever looks the same. Blue is where you will discover *your Jitsu. Purple is where you will grow your skills. Brown is where you will learn to perfect those skills and learn to teach them. And black, we'll that is where you discover that you're just beginning 😂. It becomes a lifestyle if you can make it past blue and keep going. Don't get discouraged. Keep going!
You have my name on your chest my Greek brother! I’m at Scarborough SPG and lost 50 pounds from training jujitsu. I’m almost 50 now. Love training. Keep up the good work.
- What does it take to get a black belt? - Lex Fridman - Very little, you just have to show up each class - John Danaher Even though you got smashed by a lot of kids, I’m sure they look up at you with respect and a thought “I wish to be like him when I’m 40”. Congrats brother and keep up the good work!
there is something I was curious about from watching your other videos.... can you still join recon or marsoc if you wear glasses or get any other corrective eye surgery, like lasik or prk, prior to joining the marines? Idk if you’ll read this, but thanks for reading my question if you do, and thanks for satisfying my curiosity if you answer!
I've been a blue belt for over 3 years now.. Kinda ironic because I haven't been able to train because of covid and then because I joined the Marine Corps last year. But I hit the fleet in 2 weeks. You bet I'll be on the mats on leave and then very quickly in SC.
