@@rachelmambachart807, unfortunately the pain in my knee forced me stop training. Great video for us old farts lol. I started at 40 as well and fast forward 3 years I’m a recently promoted blue. I’m under no illusions I’ll ever get to black, with the whole work, kids, life thing, but I still enjoy it so who knows. But it really is nice to see one of us old farts reach that level. Good job amigo!
Started last year at 57. About a year to go to blue belt. Still give the twenty somethings a run for their money. Surviving 5 minutes now with the blue and odd purple belts. Think I’ll be this choked up when I get the blue. Congratulations on the black. Massive achievement at any age. I highly recommend BJJ for older guys, great for mobility and the band of brothers and sisters.
Congratulations! I will be 60 in a few days, started about 8 years ago and became a brown belt 5 months ago. Last week I decided I was going to quit. I felt like I couldn't keep up with the 20 -30 year olds and if I did well it wasn't from years of rolling it was because they were going easy on me - a 'pity party', which I don't want. I could not accept my limitations. However, I do love Jiu Jitsu. I told my Coach about quitting. He definitely was not pleased. He has encouraged me for many years- (whenever I have doubts like now). He once again convinced me not to quit. BUT - I still am very sad about my age etc and it's always in my mind that if I just quit I would not have to think about it.
Just think, Cynthia, how much worse you'd have it if you wering training. Maybe allow yourself to take a vacation, relax and do nothing, and then come back with renewed energy. osss
@@deifor Hi, good, sensible advice- I have thought about taking a break, but I kind of work like that saying 'an object in motion will stay I motion..etc'. I have taken a break 2× - once for rotator cuff surgery- about 4.5 months- the other, Covid shutdown. Aside from those pretty much train 4-6×/week. I get paranoid that others will get 'ahead' of me. So either I'm in or I'm out (yes, not necessarily sensible)
An aging body can definitely make things more challenging. On the other hand you have to ask yourself what made you want to take the BJJ journey in the first place ? If it is no longer rewarding then there is no harm in devoting your resources to another activity. On the other hand if you still feel like you can get a lot from BJJ, maybe you just need to reduce your training frequency a bit to prevent burnout. 4-6x / week is quite a lot. It's probably a mistake to try and compare yourself to others too much. Sometimes I feel like there is too much focus on the competitive nature of BJJ as opposed to each person focusing on their own personal growth.
I started a week after my 40th….5 years in & I’m still a blue belt. Trained consistently for the first 4 years but no where near as much as I would’ve liked the last year because of Covid lockdowns/birth of my 2nd child & now a torn medial meniscus. Looking to start going minimum 3 times a week next year. Can’t wait to push myself again in this beautiful art that is BJJ. Congrats to the gentleman in this video…..must be an incredible feeling receiving that black belt. ☺️👊🏼🥋
Such an inspiration. It’s the path I feel I am walking now. Started 2 years ago just before turning 40 and as a blue belt, I cant get enough, but I train consistently 3x per week every week. The idea in my head was to hit black belt by the time I turn 50…. This just shows again that staying the course can make that a reality. Love seeing stuff like this. ❤
Very inspirational. I too started at 40 (currently 42 y.o. Blue Belt), so it’s nice to know there’s hope for Black Belt even for those of us starting later.
Awesome!! I started at 34 and was thinking I may never make it to black belt and this def gave me the push and inspiration to keep showing up and keep working!
This honestly made me tear up. I started three years ago, at age 49, just got my blue belt (after losing 9 months to a lower back injury and a torn ACL, still going at 52, but can only roll twice a week due to family commitments. But I am in it to the very end, until my body fully breaks down later due to old age. Hoping to get my black belt somewhere around 62-64 yrs old, barring any more brutal injuries. ✌🏼
I'm 37. I started 4 months back. I've been doing 4 days a week. This is inspiring. Especially the fact that at 40+ years old he trained 6-7 times a week.

I have enough time to be at the academy as much as 8 times per week. My goal is to make it to Black Belt in 8 years. I’m not gonna beat myself up if I don’t get there in that time frame, this is just a goal I have set for myself. I’ll grow as fast as my Professors see fit. But I’m in shape, I’m athletic, I eat right and take care of my body and learn really fast. So I think it’s attainable.

I think the reason a lot of people are starting BJJ so late in life is because when they were younger, most of them didn't know much about it. I think the awareness of BJJ came in 4 distinct waves: 1. Televised UFC/MMA matches 2. The rise in violent crime prompting you to learn self defense 3. Tired of the same old fitness routines and wanting something different 4. The enormous amount of UA-cam videos that espouse the benefits of the sport If it weren't for YT videos, I think many still wouldn't try bjj.
