Absolutely. If it's store-bought, it's more "woody" because it's grown longer... especially if sold by weight. We have a 15-yo asparagus garden. We do not let it over-mature. It melts in your mouth and makes awesome asparagus soup.

I was amazed the first time eating it fresh from the farmers fields, there is no comparison to mass produced vegetables.

I snap off a spear from the garden and eat it on the spot! You're right--nothing compares to fresh asparagus.
