who else basically just went through all this stuff knowing that in the back of your mind that nothing ever works out in your life but you thought this would and it didn't
Yep, except now kotor crashes as soon as I load a saved game.
mine works...
yep. i got it working in 3440x1440 reso, but no HUD fix to match and i can't see the character dialogue options.
This reply's a little late but: I had the same issue, you need to disable frame buffer AND vertex buffer objects in the .ini
I had a similar situation. Things work out in my life to later break so I know what it's like to have something and lose it so I suffer more. So it worked for about 5 minutes for me and never again.
the most polite and well explained tutorial in my whole life
A fix for those of you who followed the steps to the T but the game somehow runs bigger than your monitor size:
Make sure your "Scale and Layout" setting (under display settings if you right click desktop) in windows is set to 100% and not anything bigger. I have a 2560x1440 monitor so I normally have mine set to 125%. That screws with the resolution and will make it larger than your screen for whatever reason.
Thanks
YES! Thank you! this was the last fix I needed for a perfect rez, please pin this!
Or if you want to keep your monitors scaling just Right Click the "swkotor.exe" and go to "Compatibility" and hit the "Change High DPI Settings" and check the box at the bottom that says "Override High DPI Scaling Behavior" and set it to Application and BOOM, NO MORE OFF SCREEN GAME! :D
Thank you, you are a top the Swanson Pyramid of Greatness for this
@Dusty Shackleford If it made 2/3rds of your screen black either your monitor is old as fuck or you didnt do something right. Honestly I wish they would just make a freaking remaster of this game. We wouldnt have to mess around with mods if theyd give the community what it wants.
Thanks, it worked perfectly. For anyone that wants to know, this is permanent, so you don't have to launch or change anything each time you want to play the game
1280x768 ? 4:03
Don't replace the executable. Just add ".BAK" to the extension and then drop the unencrypted exe in. Keep the original in case something goes wrong. Always good practice. Otherwise, the tutorial worked for me. Thanks!
Late comment by whatever... I like the fact that you design the tutorial so that people with zero computing knowledge can still catch up with that.
I got lost when I had to download the file in the description. I downloaded it and can't find it now
Thank you I’ve been trying to do this for ages, your guide was the only one that actually worked
Fun Fact: If, after following all of the steps to a T, your desired settings seem to overshoot your screen, check in your display settings that you do not have any scaling enabled. For some reason, that affects the KOTOR program and can over-enlarge the game after everything is patched.
Thank you! Spent over an hour trying to figure out why this wasnt working. Scaling was at 125 which was throwing it off.
Works fine, december 2019. Great thanks. There was one problem, but I solved it. If someone has problems with scaling after following all the instructions from this guide, check the scaling options in the display settings in Windows. It should be 100% (recommended), not 125%, etc. I had 125% and the entire game interface went beyond the screen. PS sorry for my english.
^^THIS - THANK YOU SO MUCH MY DUDE. Spent nearly 2 hours trying to figure out why the HUD is off center and this did it.
@@KingThorDeDe did that and still couldn't see the hud
THANK YOU!!! I couldnt get it working for hours.
Thank you so much!
Just wanted to thank you and the people who commented on this video. After dicking around for about two hours, trying to get this to work, following your advice and the comments in this video actually worked. Thank you.
Got it working on Windows 10 with the Steam version.
Still works to this day very nice video thank you even from 2023!
I can't get the UNIWS file to download, has anyone else had this problem?
Tried everything down to the letter, still can' t even see dialog options. Thanks anyway...
i wanted some nostalgia. and even 4 years after you made this it saved me so many headaches trying to mess with flawless wide screen. thanks so much
Thank you for the guide. Small addition - at the end of the process, if you still can't seem to get a proper full screen (it's still a bit "windowed"), if you have a monitor with a refresh rate above 60hz, go to the ini file and change the game's refresh rate to that of your monitor. On my end it worked and the game launched in proper fullscreen.
BEAUTIFUL!!! Everything was great but still "windowed".. All better now. THANK YOU for this Addition!
In the universal widescreen program once i select the swkotor folder, the new resolution numbers dont appear?! Can anyone tell me why or how i can get them to appear?
did you ever figure it out
I am also wondering this
Same happened to me, im stuck on it. Any tips?
i followed your instructions to the letter but my hud is still broken
Edit: i fixed and it was due to it not running as an admin. i suggest you add that as an annotation or comment for anyone that has this problem in the future
Thanks, this fixed my issues aswell!
run what?
ryan roalf I think you have to run the swkotor.exe file as an administrator
This also worked for me. I believe it was because I had the steam version running from an alternative source point. Happy May 4th.
IF YOU ARE ZOOMED TO TOP LEFT CORNER AFTER THIS GUIDE
just open swkotor.exe properties and in compatibility tab check "turn off fullscreen optimalization" and open "change DPI settings", check bottom box and leave "application" in scroll menu, that finally worked for me
for those dummies like me who followed the instructions perfectly but having a 1440p monitor and ended up with the bottom menus being off screen, check the description, this bloody amazing lad included the fix for us so don't get the 2560x1600 one, in description is "2560x1440 HUD FILES" get the file from there!
thanks, I would've missed it.
I can't download the exe file
4:04 error not found... do you mean 1024x768? I don't see an option for 1280x768
i cant find the option either
Yes, he does mean 1280x768
I know this is late, but you should choose the resolution which you selected in the config file.
7 years later and this worked on my Steam Deck! Thank you so much.
tried to do the same but the game crashes after applying the widescreen mod. only on the adjusted resolution.
For anyone who did this an is still having issues, try going into "change display settings," go to "change the size of text, apps, and other items," and change it to 100%
This helped me at least, I hope it helps anyone else having issues.
This worked for me. Thank you!
I have a problem whit the text (cant see the answer ) how i can find the display settings ?
THANK YOU!!! it was seriously that simple, lmaoo.
@@fucktheusapeace5954 on the desktop, just right click on the desktop, dropdown menu should come up. Click on Display Settings, from there you should be able to see option to change size of text.
Mate you rock thanks I was getting a headache
subtitles don't appear on my 1366x768 monitor
For once, someone with a clear voice narrating a video that I need to get an amazing game working. You're detailed walkthrough was almost perfect, how ever, you suggested the wrong starting resolution, it should be 1024x768 in the Uniwis, otherwise the Hud Correction won't work.
He actually said 1280x768 instead of 1024 :P but he selected the right one so i guess it's ok? XD
so far it seems it is working perfectly. thanks a lot
uniws gets flagged as a trojan on virusTotal by 2/60 sources is it still safe to use. From the same link btw.
Thank you so much! Tip for all: Don't forget to check the box that says "override high dpi scaling behavior" under compatibility settings! otherwise your screen will be zoomed in and offset!
Thanks!
Thank you, it works perfectly now!
Problem is - it doesn't effing work, no matter which setting or combination of settings I use.
Nice thanks man.
thank you so much.
There's something wrong with the 2560x1440 files. When I follow the instructions and use them, the menus are surrounded by black bars on all 4 sides, like they're too small. But if I do the exact same thing for 1920x1080 and use the files from the WSGF forums, they fill the entire screen. I've gone back and forth doing the instructions 4 times, 2 for each resolution, and I only have this issue with 2560x1440.
Your post is four years old, so maybe the links have changed, but there is no file for that resolution now. There is one for 2560x1600 though, which I unfortunately used, despite my monitor being 2560x1440, and now the lower HUD is gone. Edit: Derp, this video is obsolete. People, look at the description, and watch the new video. It worked fine on my PC, and it looks a LOT better than vanilla.
Worked like a charm! Thank you so much! 1920x1080 and the game actually still looks rather nice, after all these years!
did the 1920x1080 hud fix work for you? for some reason, it doesn't for me
You might want to provide a new link as the exe you linked to is no longer safe.
Using the swconfig, I can't see the resolution. Its empty so I can't choose anything. What can I do?
Hello! I had a similar problem. What i did was this:
Delete Kotor, all related programs and reinstall afterwards.
Follow this guide again, also in the swkotor.ini file, change refresh rate so it matches that of your monitor. My computer has a refresh rate of 120 so i changed the ini file to the same. I can now play the game with full screen.
I also changed these
Anisotropy=0
Frame Buffer=0
Anti Aliasing=0
Soft Shadows=0
Disable Movies=1
You can change them back on when you are in game. Lastly i also run as Windows Service Pack 3 and as an Admin. I Know how frustrating this can be, so i sincerely hope it can help you.
Edit: The last problem i encountered was, that 90% of my screen turned black after ANY cutscene, big or small. What did was this
1: Hit the windows homekey
2: Changed my screen resolution to 1024x768
3: Went back into the game
4: Hit alt+enter and then rezised the game in the upper right corner
I would have to do this at the start of every cutscene and after every cutscene.
@@seanconneryvsapplesauce52 I love you, this is exactly what I needed to do. Changed the refresh rate and immediately went full screen. Thanks! Been trying for hours
@@I_am_a_cat_ You are most welcome. The struggle to play this damn game.
@@seanconneryvsapplesauce52 Holy frick thank you.
This still works 2019 thank you so much I was about to give up
What version doe you use? I just installed the steam version and tried this 2 times, but everytime the resolution does not go to 1920. It goes offcenter, it is zoomed to one corner
@@JudgeYuri the steam version. yes it did that to me you need to put it in windowed mode and put it back to fullscreen that resets it I think because that's how I got it to work
@@JudgeYuri also you have to do what the guy in this video did
Thank you SO MUCH this game now works after so many tries with other videos, but non of them worked except this one!
Mine is 2560x1440 but on the Mod Website its only 2560x1600 :(
It doesn't work. I followed the steps, launched the game, and proceeded to select my resolution. It stretched the screen so much that it cropped the rest of the game.
Edit: I found the issue. Unlike modern games that resize your display, this game does not. I had my display at 150% due to how small my text would be at 4K. When I reverted the display size to 100%, the game worked flawlessly.
You are a saint
Thanks M8, windows is crap
wsfg site is completely down
The hud fix didn't work for me unti I went back into the swconfig.exe and changed the resolution to 800x600 to match the files in teh override folder. Then it worked perfectly. Hopefully someone will find this useful.
Awesome! Thanks so much. Works likes a charm. Just testing the game for over an hour now--swapping characters, traveling to different planets, closing and reopening the game--all seems to be in order.
Several other tutorials I hadn't any luck with, so thank you for posting a concise guide on this method! :)
I cannot download the exe. All the mirrors on the site you linked are full of viruses and malware. Help?
what do i do
lol everybody here from the steam sale
When i did this my HUD becomes worst,Subtitles won't show up and i can't see the dialogue options
Same

One of the easiest to follow tutorials I've ever followed. Well done sir
Hopefully this works! Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Been stuck not able to play KotOR for such a long time!
Didn't work for me, I assume it's due to the (mess of) mods I previously downloaded. Deleted all the stuff, reinstalling the game and then I'll try this again. Will update further depending on the result.
What happened: Launch screens (Bioware, Malaks big fat head etc) were unusually/wrongly stretched to too much. Actual game still had the weird border along with a bad resolution. Character creation worked but as soon as it was launched - "... has stopped working".
Again, I assume it's from the mods installed. Hopefully this'll help someone as computer literate as me depending on the results.
Redid everything by the books; uninstalled, deleted remaining files, reinstalled; followed the steps given to the letter, still no luck.
Same overall problem occurs. Weirdly stretched Malak, Lucasarts, Bioware intro; followed by a re-bordered interface. Figured it'd be fine so created a character and continued. Crash on loading.
Thought it could be a compatibility issue, tried service pack 2, no luck. Tried turning it onto windowed (fullscreen=0 in the .ini), still no luck.
Sad days.
@@dylanbaker6358 wonder if you ever got this to work. havent had any luck so far either
I did everything like instructed in the video, I got widescreen to work and downloaded the HUD fix. However, the HUD fix put the icons back where they belong but the ones from the inferior left corner (where you can change the active character, turn solo mode on and off, pause the game, and activate your stealth field generator [if you have one equipped]) are partially out of the screen, so I can use everything in there except switching your active character, which I believe is the most important thing in there... Does anybody know how to fix that?
i stuck at the same place too. i cant change the charecter thus im not able to progress the game. did anyone find a fix?. i tryed other hud options on the website but didnt work.
no hud fix for 1440p :(
Fixed a problem with not being able to change the resolution when launching the WSFG file... As stupid as it sounds I forgot to install the Kotor EXE file, then I have made the resolutions match exactly to what this person shows and finally anything that I launched was using "Run as Admin" command. All works now, thank you!
No folder download for the EXE.
What to do with the interface on a 2560x1440 monitor?
The UI Scaling fix doesn't work.
Same problem, no response to it either. It's fucking annoying.
Thank you bunches, game looks 10x better especially with a nice reshade mod and this together. Instructions couldn't have been more clear, if I were a newb to modding I feel like this would be a breath of fresh air.
Amazing tutorial. Still works.
I've got it all to work except the dialogue options don't show up :(
same here. did you ever fix it?
Downloading that patch felt like I was defusing a bomb
To those who cant see the games list instead of creating a new folder open the .exe in the .zip file. Worked for me
This guide is 4 years old and yet still works. Thanks a ton bro!
Tried this on a 4k monitor. I simply cant play the game. Everything is messed up. The game goes either over 3 monitors, but only the upper half, or the options in the game are missing totally
windows display settings set to 100% might fix your problem
What res do u use?
@@cumminsturbo98 That works for me but there's one problem... EVERYTHING is extremely tiny lol
probably because this mod is for 1080p and not 4k. big brain
@@Kanightley Selling a game that cannot be played properly. "big brain". What if i tell you that the size of a brain does neither correlate to that beings intelligence nor its knowledge.
thanks for the help mate watched another video b4 this wasn't as clear as your instructions thanks now i can play KOTOR in sweet 1080p
Thanks. I am surprised anyone else even has a video on this topic that is even remotely up to date
New Obi-Wan show got me wanting another run in kotor. Thanks for the guide to get it lookin better!
This worked for me. If you're unable to download UNIWS then simply copy the link into a new window and download it that way. It won't open directly from UA-cam or let you even download it via the UA-cam window.
Sick this worked, thanks.
Great vid!
but when i try to open the game it shows me the first lucasarts logo and after that it just minimalizes the game and takes me back to the desktop. The game is still running but i cant open it up...
Open swkotor.ini and type AllowWindowedMode=1 into the Line beneath FullScreen=1. Then press alt+enter during the intro videos and again to get fullscreen in main menu.

This happened to me, have you played the game beforehand?
Okay not sure what happened two years ago but all the links work just fine and I got the game to run in 1080p now. So thanks, Video-Creator!
I was on the verge of collapse until I found your video. I spend hours looking for a tutorial, but none of them worked but you saved my ass! Thank you VERY much!
I dont write comments that often. Very good Tutorial.Nice and calm Voice and a good Video Quality. Keep going ;)
okay so ive done the patch and everything you said, but the game isnt displaying properly the games ratio is much larger than my screens, even though my screen is 1080p and i used the 1080p options, please help!
I managed to fix this issue (in Windows). Find your modified version of swkotor.exe, right-click and select Properties. Compatibility tab. Tick "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".
Note: this didn't work if I enabled compatibility mode for Windows XP - I left everything else on the Compatibility tab un-ticked to get it to work.
Yes! This worked. The actual gameplay now works the way it should.Thank you! Now I just need to figure out how to get the movies to actually play.
Akiata YOU ARE THE BEST! Thank you for your comment, your step was the one I needed to solve my issues as well. Boss!
Glad to hear it's working! Happy Kotor'ing! :)
For those running on Windows 10, tick "Disable fullscreen optimizations".
Followed your steps exactly as you described and it all worked the very first time I fired up the game after patching. Thanks for the tutorial!

Hey Xuul, the link to the WSGF in your description is not correct, here is the true link: (Might wanna edit your description link to this)
www.wsgf.org/article/star-wars-knights-old-republic
Thank you so much, this has been the only guide that has worked for me. Very straightforward and simple, thank you again! Now I get to enjoy this star wars classic in glorious HD :)
Fantastic video my friend, everything is explained perfectly. Worked like a charm for the 2560x1440 size.
Hey I'm trying to do the same. Which HUD file did you use? There wasn't one for 2560x1440, there was only the 2560x1600 for the HUD. Did you use that and get it to work?
When I click on the swkotor file within Universal Widescreen Patcher it doesnt let me fill out the screen width and height. Any idea why?
same :/
same
and I see still no response...
Fyzzy I tried it again a few times. Have you made sure you are using the cracked exe?
yes
Hey Xuul, I copied your instructions exactly, and the game is still not working properly. About one quarter of the screen is showing, the rest is black. My PC is not able to exit out of the game and the only way I can get rid of it is to sign out of my computer. I also tried your flawless widescreen with the exact same issue occurring. I do have the UI fix installed so its not that. Please help, I would love to play this game again! My laptop runs on Windows 10 64bit
since its a laptop you probably set the wrong resolution if you copied every instruction exactly
1920x1080...
I know that it has been a year since you posted this mate, but to fix this go into your ini file under Graphics and change "Fullscreen=1" to "Fullscreen=0". This will set your game to windowed mod and then all you have to do after launching the game is alt-tab out of it and double click the window of the game (to enlarge it).
Still relevant and works like a dream in July of 2021. Thanks so much for the additional link for the 2560x1440 HUD correction files. That's the aspect ratio that works best for my 4k monitor knocking it down to normal HD video. It took some experimentation with different resolutions to find the best one, but your explanation was so clear and steps so well defined it was simple to backtrack and try again with a new resolution.
I've got a 2560x1440 monitor as well, but for some reason my game is running at half the scale it should be and then crashes on loading, even though I followed the video to the letter. Did you do anything different?
This was very straightforward and easy to follow. The dl link for uniws is broken for some reason but it's also in the widescreen forums link that is in the description for anyone wondering.
What do I click for the Kotor executable file? The one to download the (fds-sk13 file)
yeah im a bit confused here too, im surprised no ones answerred this yet
ahh i think i figured it out, when you click the link the thread you want should be at the top. look for the floppy disk at the top left of the post and click that
Open Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization. Now, click on Folder Options or File Explorer Option, as it is now called > View tab. In this tab, under Advanced Settings, you will see the option Hide extensions for known file types. Uncheck this option and click on Apply and OK.
@@abiscan00 when i download it all i get is a readme.txt and swkotor.exe theres no fds-sk13 file even when i have the hidden things shown etc. :/ any ideas why?
setting extensions to be visible takes like 1.5 seconds... Yeah there is entire video how to do that .. -_- -_- -_-
Just did this, worked like a charm. Thanks a ton.
Also the link for the Universal Widescreen in the description didn't work for me, but the download is on the same page as the Widescreen Forums link so you can just find it there anyway.
thank you so much dude been trying to figure this out for so long your video was really well done and clearly understood finally got kotor running in 1440p thanks so much man
Hey so the link to the executable is just an ad-spam, I click it and it brings up a pop up window that just says mirror 1 and mirror 2. When I click either of those I just get spammed with ads, can anyone help?
was this ever resolved? having the same problem.
Just google SWKOTOR.EXE and find a site that isn't spam. I just did it before even coming here (been modding KOTOR 1&2 for years, always go for the cracked .exe before doing anything as Steam exe's are always fubar lol)
can you use both this patch and the 1920x1080 movies fix?
no no,this only for game yo,movie is already it is.u cant change it
Anyone experiencing HUD/UI problems listen up, this may help. I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate, but I suspect this may be an issue for any version of Windows. I tried installing the game last year and used the Flawless Widescreen method. I never got it working correctly without the game crashing and all manner of other problems. I ended up just uninstalling the game, but left Flawless Widescreen (and apparently) its "fixes" installed. Today, I decided to purchase the Steam version of KOTOR, since I noticed it was on sale for like $2 on the IsThereAnyDeal website, in the hopes that it might be a little more agreeable to widescreen resolutions.
After downloading, installing and loading up the game, I quickly noticed that it wasn't. I ended up following this video to set up a resolution of 1920x1080 in the game. It worked perfectly with no crashes, yet my HUD/UI seemed to be in 800x600 or an x768 resolution, with HUD elements literally in the middle of the screen and covering character models. After messing with it and researching online for at least 2 or 3 hours, I had no idea what could be wrong. I had discovered Flawless Widescreen was still installed at that point and began messing around in it, but immediately noticed that KOTOR was already installed in its list of patches. I remembered seeing a warning when installing UniWS saying not to have patches from any other widescreen fixes installed. I found that simply loading up Flawless Widescreen and uninstalling the fixes it apparently still had installed for KOTOR a year ago seemed to fix the problem entirely. Just to be safe, before loading the game after that change, I DID go back into UniWS, find my KOTOR installation and repatched it in the way it describes in the video above. I've had the game up and running for over an hour now. It's running perfectly, smoothly, in 1920x1080 resolution with a HUD resolution to match and not a single crash or bug. The cutscene videos are even uprendered to 1920x1080, although they do look a little rough because it's still basically showing an 800x600. Still pretty passable for how old the game is and how amazing the rest of the game runs.
I spent hours scratching my head as to why even after doing UNIWIS and dropping the GUI files into override, I was still getting that HUD issue. Found this video, followed these steps exactly, and problem solved. Thank you!
Great video! Subbed. I only got one problem: The HUD is overall a bit too small for my taste. It could easily be like 20% bigger.
yeah there is another mod called High Resolution Menus that fixes that
Seem to be getting an issue where the mouse doesnt point where it should, it seems to be about 4 or 5 inches off below what i try to click, any ideas? Followed the video exactly and using the steam version on windows 10. Resolution 1920x1080
Cracked it! On windows 10 go to swkotor.exe properties and in the compatability tab tick 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' works perfectly now. Thanks for the guide, liked and subscribed! :)
yes this was it thank you!!!!!
i wish this was what it took for me
The patch works but I'm having a problem anytime I transition from an in engine cutscene or a prerendered cutscene 9/10ths of the screen goes black. Audio and keyboard functions still work but I can't see anything except for a corner of the screen.
Oh my god, I love you so much right now. I tried so many different methods of getting my game to 1080p but this is the only one that worked for me. And flawless too. *-* Thanks!
I cant seem to download the executable. I downloaded 7zip but on the website i cant get it to download.
TheSootsPlays don't use 7zip use winrar
Did this, but now when I load my game, it crashes?
If your still having this issue. Try unchecking Frame buffering and soft shadows in the graphics options.
Dropping a note to say I just did this for my new playthrough, working like a charm thank you!
Nice job keeping this guide so simple. If a simpleton like me can follow it, you did it right.
How do you get the movies to work? all it shows is black screens for me when trying to play.
Same, all I get is sound with a black screen.
Scroll down to the trouble shooting section here www.wsgf.org/article/star-wars-knights-old-republic
Hey there! Awesome video! I have one minor issue. When I open the game, the lucasarts/main menu/and the character creation are all very small/mini and become normaly again once in game. Is this normal or is there a fix?
Did you find a way to fix it after 4 years?
Great fix! I've been trying to get flawless widescreen to work for hours now and this worked first try with all your steps! You just got a subscriber :)
One thing to add - and I hope you sticky this - is to disable dpi scaling options of the Application on the executable in Windows 10, otherwise the screen will get cut off if the person is using DPI scaling (which I gotta think most people are if they have a 1440 or 4k monitor).
Thank you so much, I had this exact problem and didn't know what was wrong. I agree, this should be stickied or at least put into the video description.
TO THOSE GETTING A BLACK SCREEN AFTER CHARACTER CREATION. THIS SUPPOSEDLY ONLY HAPPENS TWICE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE GAME! THE FIX IS TO CLICK THE WINDOWS KEY AND THEN CLICK THE GAME ON THE TASKBAR. THE GAME WILL NOW SHOW THE VIDEO ALONG WITH RESTARTING THE VIDEO THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY BLACKSCREEN. ENJOY.
On the Website where I can download the swkotor.exe is written, that it is in english. I'm german and have a question: will it also work in german???!!!
I don't think so.
My game is in French and the dialogue doesn't show up
Via a lot of trial and error - and a smarter little brother - an old gamer can now play Knights of the Old Republic.
If your game crashes without loading, you need to set your scale to 100% (and not 150% or 125%). To do so, go to settings - display - scaling & layout - set to 100% and then launch the game. Should work for you!
