I have been familiar with the original version for about forty years, but this is the first time i think I have actually “heard” it. I may well prefer this version to the original. 🙂
Watching the guilt and shame of her decisions well up inside her... honestly a great scene. props to Jlaw. Excellent selection of the song, including the naivety of the boy not understanding the meaning behind the lyrics and it's relevance.
@@breakshot7451 Yes. There's a bit too much goofiness in the movie. The thing is, is that it could have been so much better if they restrained the silliness.
As wonderful as his performance is, Jennifer’s face conveys a thousand feelings throughout this scene. I think that I’ve seen every one of her films (including her academy award performance) and I feel her performance during this song is her strongest one yet; she truly moves me with her expressions.
@@avbeast that's the point - he's naive, he doesn't understand the lyrics or the subtext - he simply just wanted her to hear the song that was on the radio when they first met
Can’t watch this without crying - it’s just soooo brutally good; the whole scene, how Andrew gets better and better, what Jennifer does with her face - it’s just epic!
the original was all brash. this brings out the hidden heart behind it as mirrored in the depth of her dumbstruck reaction. Embarrassed to say how many times I've come back to this scene.
I am not a touchy feely emotional type of man but this cover always hits me with a brass knuckle full of the feels and leaves me on the verge of tears every time.
her acting in a (on the very first sight) average role is EXCEPTIONAL! It shows even in that tiny clip. Eye movement, smile, little hand gestures and the eyes. Not to speak about the musical performance here. Highly underrated movie and very funny too
The kid Tore down all the walls she'd ever built in an instant and made her confront herself, for a moment she was just like a young girl again, dreaming of a fairytale love story with a fabulous prince, In that time he lodged a piece of himself into her exposed heart, and even when she was able to put her walls back up later on that little shard of him hadn't gone anywhere, and it only grew. She tried to stop it, tried to deny it, and yet there came a point when she couldn't even do that, she didn't want to. She had fallen for him totally. This was the major turning point in the movie for me no doubt, after this i was so much more interested in what would happen next. I hope they make a second one, and it involves his college schooling, a deepening of their relationship, some nice fluff and romance bits, maybe a scene were he gets bullied by some dumbass Jocks, they call him the typical virgin nerd shit. She casually pulls up in a supercar, steps out like a sexy model in a tight cocktail dress, full makeup and looking spicy, and says something like "Hey honey, i came to get you" while leaning against the hood of the car all sensual looking. She, or maybe him, then walk forward and yank him/her into a fiery kiss right then and there, in front of everyone. Would be even funnier if she tells the assholes off over his shoulder with her scary wild woman vibes. Could even have an obsessed female classmate who absolutely refuses to believe he's dating someone when he tells her, "Because he's a nerd", and then she sees that kiss, causing her to lose her mind even worse then before. Then our gals gotta defend her man from the crazy stalker girl, and later whoop her ass in a catfight to make her go away for good. Then there's a cute wedding at the end or something like that. Would legitimately be an emmy award winner if they did that shit.
Saw him on Broadway a few years ago take over the lead in Dear Evan Hanson as a seventeen year old who’d never performed professionally previously, it was his first night and he was terrific.
Like everyone else is saying JL face as the song is played is out of this world, top notch acting, great in the moment character her face really makes you think that she believes she is this person, and I am sure that is not an easy thing to do.
That little smile at 3:44. So hard to get a perfect read on it, but it's like, "there I did!" or "Yep, nailed it." I'm not sure, but it's really sweet.
I've seen that look before. It happen in front of a crowd but at the same time it's a quite, private thing, as if, in the performer's mind, they've stepped off stage already.
Nothing is more ironic than putting a subtle slap in the form of art, even without the lyrics what he was playing was very modulating which was nice to hear, hats off to both the actors for pulling this through👍
I like how interested and pleased the older couple to his right appears. Their definitely apart of this song's original generation, so the appeal is immediately recognized.
Never saw the movie. Her reactions are amazing. The dude in the background photo bombing as he bobs his head clearly enjoying it. At the end when the song is over the grin that appears when he is pleased with himself for having done well and we later find out he "just learned it" is priceless in its innocence. As for the song its perfect! I wish i could download it or by it and add to my Playlist! Well done all around! Think I'll watch the movie just for fun.....
When I say I'm head over heels for this damn boy. I cant even. One of my favorite actors now and he's so cute an talented. I love his version of the song and it is my favorite. Gosh I'm in love. This scene made me cry so bad. I wish he could know how much I LOVE HIM
That’s the difference between spontaneous and heart felt as a posed to overproduced in a million dollar studio…. Sometimes you need to focus on your listening skills to find what really reaches you.👌
I watched this movie (No Hard Feelings for the multitudes of clueless below) based on this scene. I have rewatched this scene several times and I must say, this version of this song is far superior to the original. All respect to the writers, the Hall and Oates studio version totally misses. This song was meant to be played by a single voice on a single instrument. Either piano or guitar. Leave out all the studio production. Great lyric. I would love to hear Diana Krall do a jazzy version of this. Or Joss Stone.
Never was a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, but damn this movie made me like her. I understand it’s a character and she’s an actress, but it was a good movie IMO. Extremely beautiful, talented, and funny as hell.

100% crazy when you revisit these songs from your childhood and you're like... I DIDNT KNOW THOSE WERE THE LYRICS! =) amazing
lol, exactly what I was thinking regarding the lyrics and the song. simplified and clear.
You all need to hear the Aloe Blacc live with Darryl. Soooooo much better than this
Same here. That was a really good cover.
Watching the guilt and shame of her decisions well up inside her... honestly a great scene. props to Jlaw. Excellent selection of the song, including the naivety of the boy not understanding the meaning behind the lyrics and it's relevance.
This scene had ZERO business being as good as it was in a movie like this. Just a grand slam by both performers
so it seems i have to watch the movie again. tried it and canceld it after 20 min. or is that scene the best of it

@Oof-DahReviews-bf4hv well good forbid something should be fun, can't have too much of that. Gross.

I totally agree with you
Yeah it's honestly a whole world of shame, guilt, adoration fighting against each other in her face right here. V well done
I guess I don't get it. I can't imagine that anyone would think it's complimentary towards any woman that he's with at that restaurant.

As usual, a song I’ve heard thousands of times, but for the first time I’ve heard all the words 😂
Me too. Elocution is so important.
who dreamed up this version of the song---how brilliant! Jennifer plays the role to perfection
It's a perfect song for the movie🤷♂️ you see how she takes the song kinda personal. Make her reflect on herself for a min.
apparently Andrew did!
This is the scene that stole our hearts 💕
That boy has the voice of an angel
Not so much an angel but different in a good way
@stevareno6995 agreed. I think it's actually the weird cracks and off note keys he hits that makes this as great as it is!

The original is about show business in new york city, not a literal woman.
Love Andrew ❤ he's super talented guy, his betsy performance was iconic
