France occupied and exploited Vietnam for over 80 years before being defeated in 1954. Japan invaded and occupied Vietnam during WWII before being expelled in 1945. After the American war, Cambodia invaded Vietnam sparking another 10 year war. Then China invaded again in 1979. In 1966 Ho Chi Minh made the following quote in an interview that illustrates the Vietamese attitude toward war " If they (the Americans) want to make war for 20 years then we shall make war for 20 years. If they want to make peace, we shall make peace and invite them to tea afterwards." Vietnam has made peace with America and now it's "Tea Time" for Americans here in Vietnam.
As a Vietnamese American who left in 1975, I find most Vietnamese Americans still resent the new Socialist Government of VN, and only because of the past. It's like the Southerners resentment of the North after the Civil War. But as I am someone who has lived in VN for the past 12 years, I must say, people here are super kind. The people are very forgiving, just don't criticise any part of VN. They do not take condescndening jokes lightly, which was what I had to get used to as an immigrant in America now living here.
I would go out and have drinks after work in Vietnam. Just about every night someone would invite me over to their house for dinner. Hanoi is one of the most friendly places I have ever been. Work there for about 2 weeks and cannot wait to go back.
I used to walk around Japan playing a guitar. I did this in Mexico as well. People will wave you in to their shop and pay you to play a song. Many times a Japanese person gave me $100 for playing hotel California
I really appreciate this perspective. I'm a discarded 59 yo single dad from the USA doing an exploratory trip in Vietnam. Men in the USA are not only discarded by the corporate system, but by the culture, family court system, and women who mine resources until they have their $5k/month lifestyle assured without working. I came here based on Susan Cain's Book "Quiet," which discusses four countries where introverts are respected and heard, unlike the USA where they are treated like left handed children in Japan. I find the culture and people to be open, welcoming, generous, kind, and gracious but doubt I'll ever be able to get far with the language.

@@sbc4434When I was working there circa early 2000s at FTSE 100 company as a director in my early 40s there were plenty of 50s and 60 year olds still working. I left in 2007, a recent conversation with a friend in his 50s said thins changed after the GFC. In my 30 years in corporate USA 1977-2007 there was always work for mature workers who were seen as valuable for experience - not any more. Here in Oz basically you get 20 years post college/uni to work make a fortune to pay-off HECS/student loans, your mortgage (as if) and save for retirement...no bloody chance.

I’m currently going through the whole agism thing. People just ignore it for the most part because in the states it’s a dog eat dog culture. I’m 50 now with a degree from a top rated university PLUS a specialty certificate in the healthcare system and CANNOT find a good job! Women just forget you exist after 50 unless your loaded with money, then that’s all they want. I’m entirely DONE with western culture! I’ll probably retire early and when I do I will make all the younger people who use agism to their advantage pay 10 times the amount I paid for my house. I won’t give a western woman a penny of my retirement wealth either. The US has created a truly miserable place to live anymore!

I find everything about Vietnam to be a superior choice to the other countries nearby that western expats flock to primarily for companionship. My only concern has been the language issue. These girls are predators for the most part. They will like you as long as you have money. But, it's really no different in the west either. You can do the exact same in USA or Canada - the only difference is the amount of money it will take to be seen as "rich." So in Miami, you'll need a big mansion and a lambo - whereas in S.E.A., you'll only need social security and a condo. In both cases though, you're seen as a target - for being "rich." Just always remember that and you'll be fine.

It really does not matter. In the West you have to constantly prove yourself as a straight white male you are never enough. In Asia your status is immediately better, at least you can get the ladies and enjoy a less stressful life with fresh food and 100 times cheaper healthcare. As an adult male all I need is fresh from scratch food, affordable shelter and affordable healthcare.
I think the difference economically is that in the west the family court/social justice based hiring systems will seize on your peak earning years to redistribute your wealth and assets (job, house, etc) and after this point you will be discarded, so usually by age 55-60, while in the East there is enough left in your pocket for a decent lifestyle and someone to push your wheelchair into the great beyond (like you say, a condo and social security check). In the USA, men are being downsized into retirement while ex-wives refuse to downsize lifestyles after age 60. Socially, the difference is that families, due to social pressure often based on shame and rigidity, take care of family members who cannot work and people are not despised because of currently fashionable in-group out-group identifiers. The current pendulum swing against the sins of the past, requires western cultures to despise those of us who share identifiers with the oppressors, that is those of us afflicted with white maleism. I think in the inward-facing cultures where there is still some spiritual component like karma or mudita, there is less likely to be some ingroup and outgroup/scapegoat for ALL of society's ills and less of a tendency to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I think in the inward-facing cultures people are also more likley to accept something like "fate" or karma or cyclical states of being, which also creates a lot of issues that leave the pendulum swing pushing crowd angry and confused, (but then again every change or movement leaves them angry and confused.) As far as male-female relationships, they have always been based on economics and the oldest profession, in neoliberalism and in traditional cultures. The entire idea of marriage for "love" is a relatively recent western concept.
I would like to retire someplace like Vietnam, but I would also like to stay busy doing something that would generate a little income. I am trying to avoid getting stuck in a cubicle like I was in Hartford, CT. I am a former licensed stockbroker and financial advisor (7, 63, 65 and Insurance "miscast big time") I also have a USCG 100-ton captain's license and an BA in English from UCONN. I have traveled a bit around Southeast Asia in my younger days. Does anyone remember Double Sixes in Bali? I even dated a gynecologist from Yanhee Hospital. But he is rich… is very lucky is married ( has visa permanence) plus plenty of $$ ( income permanence) so very different than most who for sure have to struggle with visa if also not wealthy. A big hurdle for many Americans!
I didn't ask his net worth, but he moved there and was teaching English on a work visa. Does that sound rich to you? He married 2 years later after he found the right woman. He wasn't married when he arrived. There is usually a way to get things done in life when your glass is half full friend. Don't surrender your future out of fear. Keep your head up and look for a path forward that you love. Attitude is 90% in life.

Thinking savings, retirement, etc. Also stated he didn’t remember medical bill but just comparing to me with only SS & small IRA but I would definitely take the plunge as am 73 & have done 3 separate month long trips there in past 10 years & want desperately to get out of USA. It’s an interesting interview. In reality you don’t go from being invisible to George Clooney, they have their motives for why they do that in Southeast.. Many of the men go to foreign countries and treat the young girls so nicely, in a way they never would in America. I've never had a man ask me out on a date by buying flowers and lunch. If one did, I'd mostly accept too. That's very sweet. This is why I wish you would interview single women that love aboard too. Most men you interview talk about how nicely they treat their young gf's/wives but that's not how men treat women in the States, and that's why they get a different reaction. 🤷🏻♀️
No sorry cant agree with you on that one. After spending alot of time in S.E Asia you are treated differently by Asian women in general of all ages. They are way more feminine and courteous. How can two people communicate if either can speak a common language? This gentleman said his wife could not speak English and he only knew a few Vietnamese words.
You pick it up as you go, point at things a lot and wear out Google Translate on your phone. Made it just fine in Thailand for six months with a GF that barely spoke English. You both learn enough to get by in the beginning and then it expands. Tragedy to let a language barrier get in the way of a great adventure.

Thank you for watching. To answer your question, I’d like to tell you about my mother-in law, who is a veteran of the American War. She joined the Youth Brigade when she was 17 doing maintenance work on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and eventually became a nurse in the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). While she was serving in Laos, American bombers completely leveled her hometown of Thanh Hoa. This woman has every reason to hate me and everyone who looks like me and I wouldn’t blame her one bit if she did. However, her relationship with me is the exact opposite. No one was happier when my wife and I announced our engagement and she’s been super supportive of us during the 3 ½ years we’ve been married. I could not ask for a more loving and supportive mother-in law. She is typical of the people here in Vietnam. They have moved on from the war and they LOVE Americans.
Not every single Vietnamese loves America, esp in the north, but let's say practically all Vietnamese like foreigners - Europeans, Australians, Canadians, and Americans the best.
How do you ignore the fact that my wife has adult children who are the same age as my adult children and she is also a grandmother. Furthermore, she's a successful entrepreneur here in Vietnam who was doing just fine without me OR my money. There are men who come to SE Asia and marry much younger women but I'm not one of them. No, Currently Vietnam has no retirement visa. There is much talk about it but there is reluctance on the part of the Vietnamese government. I believe it's because they don't want to be in a positon in which Vietnam is supporting the retirees of other countries.

Yes. Hanoi is one of the most pollutted cities in the world and I find myself coughing on days when the air quality is exceptionally bad. However, I find that a small price to pay for living in such an amazing city. The government is aggressively dealing with this problem and I expect things will continue to improve.

I didn't like Ho Chi min city, too big to busy and polluted, Hanoi is more interesting for sure but quite polluted as well, in fact I liked the south on the Mekong , Canto is a cool city. Spend much time in Mui Ne for Kitesurfing but mostly tourist there and the beach is littered with plastic. I was not impressed by the women in Vietnam I was expecting to see more beauties but not really, now I didnt necessarily looked for that as i was already with my gf but it seems that there were more cute girls in Thailand, maybe I am biased.
You won't understand how beautiful Vietnamese woman are until nighttime. They dress conservatively in the day. The Thai women put there best foot forward 24 hours day. Almost no professionals in Vietnam compared to Thailand.

@formica. If you are a victim of or worried about petty theft, you're probably not in the safe area and you're not upper middle class. I've lived an upper middle class lifestyle my whole life (15+ cities) and never had to worry about petty theft.
@@Re3iRtH Sure I agree. My home is in Saigon inner city D8. All petty criminals are poor and won't be seen hanging around posh areas. However, even if you live in an upscale area, there will be many times you will have to leave your enclave to go where 95% of Vietnamese live, and must keep your guard up. There is a reason for motorbike guards outside every shop in Saigon (I don't see so many in Da Nang, Nha Trang). Also an example: I mentored a Korean teenager who lived in Thao Dien - family with big house, car, driver - and one day 2 dirtballs on a motorbike snatched their dog from his sister while being walked. They wanted a big ransom, police wouldn't help, I never found out how that resolved.
@@nigel4776 The only thing that changed for me was my environment. I was still the same middle aged guy on a bicycle in Vietnam that I was in America. I came to Vietnam assuming women would ignore me the same way they did in America so I was focused on figuring out how I was going to cover over 1000 miles of unfamiliar terrain on a bicycle without getting lost in the jungle, running out of battery power and getting attacked by a tiger. Meeting women was the last thing on my mind. My wife, who's a practicing Buddhist, believes the universe brough us together.This is the best explanation I have.
How is it different from American marriages? If you are lucky that family could also help out with kids, cleaning and repairs around the house. But even if he has to provide a few hundred dollars monthly, it is still a cheap price to pay for a comfortable life with a wom3n that you like.

I came here based on Susan Cain's Book "Quiet," which discusses four countries where introverts are respected and heard, unlike the USA where they are treated like left handed children in Japan. I find the culture and people to be open, welcoming, generous, kind, and gracious but doubt I'll ever be able to get far with the language.

@@sbc4434When I was working there circa early 2000s at FTSE 100 company as a director in my early 40s there were plenty of 50s and 60 year olds still working. I left in 2007, a recent conversation with a friend in his 50s said thins changed after the GFC. In my 30 years in corporate USA 1977-2007 there was always work for mature workers who were seen as valuable for experience - not any more. Here in Oz basically you get 20 years post college/uni to work make a fortune to pay-off HECS/student loans, your mortgage (as if) and save for retirement...no bloody chance.

I’m currently going through the whole agism thing. People just ignore it for the most part because in the states it’s a dog eat dog culture. I’m 50 now with a degree from a top rated university PLUS a specialty certificate in the healthcare system and CANNOT find a good job!

I find everything about Vietnam to be a superior choice to the other countries nearby that western expats flock to primarily for companionship. My only concern has been the language issue. If you are in shape, looks ok, tall and have money, women are interested in Vietnam. Mainly if you're white they prefer.
The older men we met there all had age gap gfs but not 30-40 years like in Philippines.
Just talk to Vietnamese women to find out. Also, old, fat, wrinkled and disgusting is not cool, but old and on your game is great.
His gf/wife has two kids. Women with no kids are often more desired. However, he did say he felt like George Clooney, being able to ask out, or being asked out, by plenty of women. So, maybe this wasn't a factor in Christopher's case. His wife is very attractive. Good for him .. and good for both of them in finding a loving relationship.

These girls are predators for the most part. They will like you as long as you have money. But, it's really no different in the west either. You can do the exact same in USA or Canada - the only difference is the amount of money it will take to be seen as "rich." So in Miami, you'll need a big mansion and a lambo - whereas in S.E.A., you'll only need social security and a condo. In both cases though, you're seen as a target - for being "rich." Just always remember that and you'll be fine.
You don't even need the condo. Just rent and you have a better life. People more salt of the earth.

@@chrishamlin5863 I've lived in SEA for over 5 years. 3 years continuously in Philippines. But also in Malaysia, Thailand , and Singapore. Haven't been to Vietnam. Don't really have plans to go until I hit Indonesia and Spain.
It really does not matter. In the West you have to constantly prove yourself as a straight white male you are never enough. In Asia your status is immediately better, at least you can get the ladies and enjoy a less stressful life with fresh food and 100 times cheaper healthcare. As an adult male all I need is fresh from scratch food, affordable shelter and affordable healthcare.
I think the difference economically is that in the west the family court/social justice based hiring systems will seize on your peak earning years to redistribute your wealth and assets (job, house, etc) and after this point you will be discarded, so usually by age 55-60, while in the East there is enough left in your pocket for a decent lifestyle and someone to push your wheelchair into the great beyond (like you say, a condo and social security check). In the USA, men are being downsized into retirement while ex-wives refuse to downsize lifestyles after age 60. Socially, the difference is that families, due to social pressure often based on shame and rigidity, take care of family members who cannot work and people are not despised because of currently fashionable in-group out-group identifiers. The current pendulum swing against the sins of the past, requires western cultures to despise those of us who share identifiers with the oppressors, that is those of us afflicted with white maleism. I think in the inward-facing cultures where there is still some spiritual component like karma or mudita, there is less likely to be some ingroup and outgroup/scapegoat for ALL of society's ills and less of a tendency to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I think in the inward-facing cultures people are also more likley to accept something like "fate" or karma or cyclical states of being, which also creates a lot of issues that leave the pendulum swing pushing crowd angry and confused, (but then again every change or movement leaves them angry and confused.) As far as male-female relationships, they have always been based on economics and the oldest profession, in neoliberalism and in traditional cultures. The entire idea of marriage for "love" is a relatively recent western concept.

I would like to retire someplace like Vietnam, but I would also like to stay busy doing something that would generate a little income. I am trying to avoid getting stuck in a cubicle like I was in Hartford, CT. I am a former licensed stockbroker and financial advisor (7, 63, 65 and Insurance "miscast big time") I also have a USCG 100-ton captain's license and an BA in English from UCONN. I have traveled a bit around Southeast Asia in my younger days. Does anyone remember Double Sixes in Bali? I even dated a gynecologist from Yanhee Hospital. But he is rich… is very lucky is married ( has visa permanence) plus plenty of $$ ( income permanence) so very different than most who for sure have to struggle with visa if also not wealthy. A big hurdle for many Americans!
I didn't ask his net worth, but he moved there and was teaching English on a work visa. Does that sound rich to you? He married 2 years later after he found the right woman. He wasn't married when he arrived. There is usually a way to get things done in life when your glass is half full friend. Don't surrender your future out of fear. Keep your head up and look for a path forward that you love. Attitude is 90% in life.
English teachers can make ~ $1500 a month, and most people can live for a bit less than that in your own apartment.

Thinking savings, retirement, etc. Also stated he didn’t remember medical bill but just comparing to me with only SS & small IRA but I would definitely take the plunge as am 73 & have done 3 separate month long trips there in past 10 years & want desperately to get out of USA. Many of the men go to foreign countries and treat the young girls so nicely, in a way they never would in America. I've never had a man ask me out on a date by buying flowers and lunch. If one did, I'd mostly accept too. That's very sweet. This is why I wish you would interview single women that love aboard too. No sorry cant agree with you on that one. After spending alot of time in S.E Asia you are treated differently by Asian women in general of all ages. They are way more feminine and courteous. I hate to bust your bubble, sweetheart, but, while Vietnamese women are very interested in American men, Vietnamese men have ZERO interest in American women. And you have no one to blame but yourselves. If I had tried that line at a bank in America I would have been angrily rejected and usherd from the premises by Security. The ugly truth is that men in America are afraid to approach women. Several decades of radical feminism in America, and the legal changes brought about by it, has created a society that punishes men for being men. If you want to change the way men react to you then you need to take it up with your sisters in crime.

How can two people communicate if either can speak a common language? This gentleman said his wife could not speak English and he only knew a few Vietnamese words.
You pick it up as you go, point at things a lot and wear out Google Translate on your phone. Made it just fine in Thailand for six months with a GF that barely spoke English. You both learn enough to get by in the beginning and then it expands. Tragedy to let a language barrier get in the way of a great adventure.

Thank you for watching. To answer your question, I’d like to tell you about my mother-in law, who is a veteran of the American War. She joined the Youth Brigade when she was 17 doing maintenance work on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and eventually became a nurse in the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). While she was serving in Laos, American bombers completely leveled her hometown of Thanh Hoa. This woman has every reason to hate me and everyone who looks like me and I wouldn’t blame her one bit if she did. However, her relationship with me is the exact opposite. No one was happier when my wife and I announced our engagement and she’s been super supportive of us during the 3 ½ years we’ve been married. I could not ask for a more loving and supportive mother-in law. She is typical of the people here in Vietnam. They have moved on from the war and they LOVE Americans.

No, Currently Vietnam has no retirement visa. There is much talk about it but there is reluctance on the part of the Vietnamese government. I believe it's because they don't want to be in a positon in which Vietnam is supporting the retirees of other countries.
They don't have a retirement visa period. But I meet people skinning the cat many others ways.

Yes. Hanoi is one of the most pollutted cities in the world and I find myself coughing on days when the air quality is exceptionally bad. However, I find that a small price to pay for living in such an amazing city. The government is aggressively dealing with this problem and I expect things will continue to improve.

I didn't like Ho Chi min city, too big to busy and polluted, Hanoi is more interesting for sure but quite polluted as well, in fact I liked the south on the Mekong , Canto is a cool city. Spend much time in Mui Ne for Kitesurfing but mostly tourist there and the beach is littered with plastic. I was not impressed by the women in Vietnam I was expecting to see more beauties but not really, now I didnt necessarily looked for that as i was already with my gf but it seems that there were more cute girls in Thailand, maybe I am biased.
You won't understand how beautiful Vietnamese woman are until nighttime. They dress conservatively in the day. The Thai women put there best foot forward 24 hours day. Almost no professionals in Vietnam compared to Thailand.

@formica. If you are a victim of or worried about petty theft, you're probably not in the safe area and you're not upper middle class. I've lived an upper middle class lifestyle my whole life (15+ cities) and never had to worry about petty theft.
@@Re3iRtH Sure I agree. My home is in Saigon inner city D8. All petty criminals are poor and won't be seen hanging around posh areas. However, even if you live in an upscale area, there will be many times you will have to leave your enclave to go where 95% of Vietnamese live, and must keep your guard up. There is a reason for motorbike guards outside every shop in Saigon (I don't see so many in Da Nang, Nha Trang).

@@nigel4776 The only thing that changed for me was my environment. I was still the same middle aged guy on a bicycle in Vietnam that I was in America. I came to Vietnam assuming women would ignore me the same way they did in America so I was focused on figuring out how I was going to cover over 1000 miles of unfamiliar terrain on a bicycle without getting lost in the jungle, running out of battery power and getting attacked by a tiger. Meeting women was the last thing on my mind. My wife, who's a practicing Buddhist, believes the universe brough us together.This is the best explanation I have.

How is it different from American marriages? If you are lucky that family could also help out with kids, cleaning and repairs around the house. But even if he has to provide a few hundred dollars monthly, it is still a cheap price to pay for a comfortable life with a wom3n that you like.
