What also might be interesting information: Iloilo City has a retirement home with mostly international retirees who cant care for themselves anymore. Also Cebu has one of those. This might be an interesting topic for another video.. Not everyone is so fit and physically and mentally healthy as you, Dan :)
You’re right nearly all claim to be disabled vets on VA or low income Social Security. Not many of us are upper middle class at $6000 month.
I would guess the care is much better - more compassionate in the Phillipines. Nursing homes in the West are like a living cemetery ...
@@jamescalifornia2964 ..and many of the people working there hate their job and only did it because thats what they could get as a job..
..with the common exception of a filipina elder care worker, as usual. Which are almost overqualified, all on the level of a hospital nurse in skills and education.
So, yes. Both in compassion and skills, in comparison for what you get in the usual elder care centre in the west
Do you have their contact information?
Great video again guys! This Chris and Alma we met you guys briefly on the beach in Boracay. We are up in Baler, Aurora take care!
Yay! Thanks for featuring Iloilo, my home town. Hope you 2 are enjoying/enjoyed your stay there.
Thanks for this. Awesome video! I will be flying into cebu mid February 2024. Your videos have been very helpful. This will be my first of many scouting trips. Unlike most ex-pats, looking for love I’m actually there for the beaches. Lol.
Are you leaning towards any particular city. Beaches are my interest as well. Especially ones with good coral reefs.
Thanks Dan and Chung for this detailed yet simple report on Iloilo city. Definitely shortlisted for my visit to the Philippines 🙏🏻 Mucho gracias.
Thanks for visiting/vlogging! Never gave Iloilo a second thought thought before.
Great video Dan! Jenna and I are going to Iloilo week after next 😉
I've been hoping to hear your take on Iloilo City - great report per usual - it looks like a nice option for a long term visit or even retirement. Very clean and orderly, reasonable costs too (not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either). Been to Manila for a week, there's just "too much happening" for my taste, much prefer Cebu instead as I've spent nearly a month there. Next visit I hope to see Iloilo for at least a week if not longer. Limited vaca time from work holds me back from extended stays :-(
Hi guys greetings from Brazil! Keep it UP!
Hi Dan, my research has brought me to the place of Puerto Princesa. It has gained the distinction of being a model city and an ecotourism haven. It has set the standard for environmental awareness and has the countries most acclaimed local government. Generally speaking Palawan is the cleanest and greenest place in the Philippines. Have a great day 😊
Hi Alan, I am very interested in Puerto Princesa. I will be there over Christmas and plan to check it out. Would love to hear more about the place.
Thanks for your Message. There’s lots of videos available for you to watch giving you all the information you need. Check out the Balabac island, that is truly beautiful.
@@alanbarnes3569yes I have watched a lot about the tourism. I would like to find out more about retiring there and the expat community
I have a friend who owns a restaurant in Iloilo (in Jaro, pronounced "Harrow") called WAWA. The other one is Punot on the Esplanade. Both are very good. Also Bourbon Street (Smallville) is good. It reminds me more of an American restaurant. The food and the view are very good there.
As always a great tour and breakdown of costs.
Do you have plans coming up to travel southern Europe?
Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Albania, Turkey, etc? 🤔 Bulgaria?
Would love to see an updated boots on the ground. 👍
Good info Dan, I need to figure out logistics for taking my truck to a few of the southern islands and start driving and exploring when we get back
I’ve been watching for 3-4 years don’t comment often but If you guys are slow traveling north, I hope y’all stop on Tablas Island and the rest of the Romblon province. Great beach’s great diving and snorkeling it’s worth the visit few tourists. Binicot beach, Looc fish sanctuary, Turtle cove, the Blue Hole, BonBon Beach. I could go on and on but trust me lots to do great restaurants affordable prices for food and lodging and 40 min or less pump boat ride to Boracay. Same sand cleaner water and few tourists. If you have time stop and visit. 8 hours from IloIlo by bus and ferry.
What area have you visited where I could be in cooler weather most of the time and then hit the beach areas every couple of months. Access to healthcare too. Thanks
This couple is so adorable. Incredibly positive energy. Thanks for all the awesome content you share.
The boat museum looks interesting 👍
Thank u for being here in iloilo sir!🙏❤️💪🇸🇽
Is Ilo Ilo near the water at all? I would love to see the nature around there...:) I would also love to know what your annual slow travel airplane costs are --- and/or overall costs moving from one city to another?
Yes Iloilo is surrounded by water and we have beautiful beaches. We also have a lot of greeneries outside of the city that you can explore.
Yes the territory HAS be charted, and now appears on maps.
Yes
Great report guys! Iloilo City looksk very livable. I would also like to know what else Panay has to offer. Hope tp run into you guys in the Phils one day. You two are my favourite couple to follow abroad :)
I hope so too!
I'm in love with Iloilo, and I haven't even been there. ;-) You made me even more sure.
You will fall in love with Iloilo because it’s also known as the city of love❤
Jaro plaza is the first millionaires row in asia, and we also have the oldest golf course in Sta. Barbara.
I live in Nuvali, not sure if that classifies as a city. But certainly very clean, no air pollution and close to all you need.
Nuvali is in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna. It's a private development enclave.
@ernestdmenace3200 my address actually is in Calamba. But yes a private area.
Superb content …thank u
Can you do a comparison between living in Philippines vs Mexico? Gracias!
Thanks for the idea!
Very nice video thanks 😅
Have been traveling around the world (60 countries). Speak 4 languages. I am thinking of moving out of Canada with my Japanese partner. The challenge is that I cannot stand hot and humid temperatures and the beach is not my thing. Looking to find a place with 4 distinct seasons. Yes, love my white Christmas ;-). Anglo-Saxon countries are the first countries off the list. Exciting times ahead!
I brought 3000 in cash for one month in Iloilo and we lived really good. I spent a little extra on my card but had cash left over. We went to the malls every day and some beach resorts.
Is that really 3000 or 30,000 pesos? or that is in dollars?

In my research phase for the Philippines:
I'm torn among these three at the moment:
1. Dumaguete
2. Iloilo
3. Baguio
No idea how I will decide. Haven't visited any of them yet, so I guess that's what I need to do over the next 4 years. Already saw Samar, Leyte and Manilla. Samar and Leyte are beautiful but too provincial. Manila great but probably too expensive.
I think weather will be the deciding factor
if you're into nature and mountain and hiking, then Baguio is the place for you. its a diverse city, educ town since majority of population here are college students but most of all; it's the weather that keeps people coming back here. aberage temp all year round is 19-21 degrees celcius. at night, it would fall to 14 degrees celcius and Baguio is a walkable city. you cam their Baguio series as well. But id youre into Beach, then Dumaguete is the rifht place for you.
You must be moving from India or something if Manila is too expensive.
@@gangstagummybear3432 I presume he is referring to Makati or BGC Manila, and not gritty Manila.
@@formica. Some of yal are heavily out of the loop, and misinformed if you think BGC and Makati are the only areas like that in Manila.
I'm more interested in living in a province, in a semi-modern house.
Maybe a little bit isolated.
Where I live in Virginia (USA), the closest town has a population of 3,000, and I live in the countryside about 10 miles away from that town.
It's where I do my grocery shopping and get everything else I need.
It does have a Walmart, so it is handy.
where I live it is dirty, smokey all the time with the burning rubbish. This is in san Juan batangas. but 2 bedroom houses rent for 4000 pesos a month
That sounds awful
Have you thought of moving?
@@VagabondAwake of course we moved to puerto Galera, but having a hard time selling our house. The problem with PG brownouts daily
Yes but what's the food like? Can you get meals that are not LOADED with salt, sugar and carbs? Can you get iced tea that's not an additional dump truck of sugar? Can you get a meal with veggies that a goat would not have a hard time chewing? I can tell you with 100% certainty, you will skip meals looking.
We cooked 70%+ of the time when we were in the Philippines.
Hey Dan! I have heard several expat vloggers lately having a different outlook then what they had before. Few of them are even at the point of returning to America. Is it getting dangerous in Phillipines again? That's what I'm getting out of all their vlogs. One was on Mindanao and I might be able to understand him, but he has totally changed his outlook on Phillipines. Maybe you could give your outlook? Thanks and great videos!!
And who were the vloggers? Dan adjusts well wherever he goes. And he’s not bound by one single location. If he has the need to move to a different city, he will. I’m curious to know what your vloggers reasons might be?
@@seamike55 I don't want to start a big issue. So I won't mention names. It's just a few I've been following for about four yrs. The main one lives on Mindanao and said something about security issues, all of the sudden.
I've visited Mindanao twice and always wondered about the safety. Now for sure.
Just getting different people's advice about the way Phillipines is is different spots . 👍
I have been to Davao, Cagayan De Oro, and Camlann Island in the State of Mindanao. No Issues at all. The US State Department does not generally recommend southern parts of the Philippines. I have never been a victim of any crime anywhere in the Philippines.
I was only in Iloilo city once during their festival! It was amazing but so festive it would be impossible to accurately grade it at that time.
My biggest problem is my wife being from Laguna and she only wants to live there! Rather selfish don’t you think?
I also would love to see Davao as videos I’ve seen are impressive to me.
Selfish indeed, Tip: get her away from her family!
Maybe it is just me but from photos of apartments and pricing the Philippines is actually very high priced relative to other se Asian countries. I look at the beds, furniture bathrooms and kitchens and everything is super cheap and very uncomfortable looking unless you are a backpacker. I just wish there were better options. The few decent places I found had rents around 1500-2000 dollars. I have lived all over in se Asia and this is a real shortcoming in my mind. I hope that I am wrong. In other se Asian countries comfortable modern units are around 700-1200 dollars. I find the Philippines as a trap. Easy to get a retirement visa but not really a great place to live and not really at a great price.
I have never stayed in an apartment anywhere in SE Asia that rents for $1500 month. People do, but that is not my world. No offense intended.
What is the best way to get to that city? from traveling to Philippines from outside
Most likely you will be arriving in Manila or maybe Cebu if you are coming from another country. From Manila or Cebu, you can take a domestic flight to Iloilo. Hope that helps.
From Manila or Cebu there will be direct flights to Iloilo
You Need to visit Other Philippine Mountain Towns Not So Crowded And Touristy As Baguio. Try Malaybalay Bukidnon Mindanao !!! Hint !!!
Any of these have temps as cool as Bagiou City ? We hate hot weather.
Better research the terrorist risk around Mindanao before travelling there. It varies up and down by regions and gov't efforts. One of my best friends is a native there, and Muslim, and it is she that warned me you need to know where the risky areas are, and she recommends as a general rule to just don't go into the rural areas at all.
@@therehastobesomethingmoore many of the bigger islands have high elevation areas where you can either rent or buy. We live so n the mountains between Dauin and Zamboanguita and our normal temperature is around 75°f during the day and 62°f at night.
Upside extremely beautiful area to live surrounded by mountains with a beautiful view of a 40 plus meter waterfall and small stream that lulls us to sleep every night. We are also blessed with a great ocean view of Apo island and Mindanao. Quiet and secluded.
Downside, 11 kilometers to the highway mostly with grade 😂 and only about 2/3 of the road is paved. Almost any truck 2 or 4 wheel drive is fine and my xrm125 has no problem with both of us (we are both in good shape). Long way to medical / eating out 😢. Other than those two drawbacks it is heaven on earth. Point is to take your time looking for a place and don't settle for less than you desire, also applies to looking for a mate 😉.

At 55 and 61 we are healthy but as we age we probably want to be close to a decent hospital.
Glad you found such a beautiful place. We will be traveling and looking for many years to come hopefully
How's the internet speed there Dan? Can you get as fast internet there as you can in Manila for Cebu, say 200 mbit per second or more?
Internet reliability is no problem in ILOILO city...5G speeds on 5G enabled devices
I'm in the provincial area in Iloilo, 35km outside the city. My internet speed at home is from 250-300 Mbps.
No problem at all.
Banking. Which bank in Iloilo could a US expat set up an account -- transfer money in/out, set up savings ?
You can never go wrong with big banks like BPI, BDO or metrobank. Talk to a bank officer/manager and they will gladly assist you. Bring your passport, ACR and other IDs you may have. In that area(megaworld), there are 2 BPI branches. The one I go to most of the time is BPI outside of the festive mall. THE STAFF there is one of the kindest, most helpful I've ever encountered so far

How much tax or VAT on alcohol? Any tax on groceries?
Grocery prices is inclusive of tax already, so no extra charges upon checkout. As for restaurants, some do charge vat/sales tax(12%) but it won't cost an arm and a leg. Lastly, tipping in the PHILIPPINES is optional unlike in the US, if only looks could kill😂😂😂 literally HAHAHA..
We really didn't need a close up to start this video woof

I'd like to see most of the expats go '''there''' - or continue in Cebu or Dumaguete and forget all about Tagaytay so it will keep the costs down where I would rather be. -?- The weather is much more comfortable to me with all the humidity in the Philippines. > Expats drive up the prices wherever they migrate to. --- I'm frugal and prefer cheap ! --- They have done a very good job improving and developing the infrastructure in Ilo Ilo and it will attract many.
I am really sorry, but ... we are actually planning to move to Tagaytay after our house in Germany is sold. :-)
Good tip. I want to move there. Don't worry though, I live cheap and only pay local prices.

No health or travel insurance?
Great question @Will67267, Not at the time. I have since bought some. I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance, and a third report sharing which one I decided to finally buy.
What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
Here is the Health Insurance I bought (and scams to avoid): ua-cam.com/video/0leF_BCLVKw/v-deo.html
By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan
The safest and cleanest city in the Philippines is hands down BGC.
BGC is not a real city. It is small bubble inside Taguig City.
Air pollution ...
Baguio is the safest and cleanest city in the Philippines. Been to Iloilo and yes it's also clean but its only clean in some business areas and not the whole illilo city whereas when i stayed in Baguio, its very clean esp in residential areas. its like some villages in Korea or in Japan. Thats the very firet thing i noticed in Baguio; its their clranliness its not very common in some cities in the philippines.
@@iamedyboy This talk of "bubbles" is retarded, the most upscale developments like that are always going to be a smaller carve out of a larger area, and yes, it is cleaner.
Are you kidding me? I was just in Iloilo city a week ago and it is a ghetto. Congested and poverty stricken with urban blight. I couldn't live there,no way
