You seriously have fun with your 'testing', to be sure. I may have to try this, if only to see if I can duplicate your shivers, shakes, and grin! I mentioned this wine to a buddy of mine who tells me in the 1950's, a liquor store his dad worked at made stuff like this to sell to the winos for a $1 a quart. Sold out of the back door of the store, it was called Alley Wine, and if the hobos brought their own jug, it would cost them just 75 cents a fill. During the winters there in Billings, Montana, if the hobos would shovel the sidewalk they got a quart free.

Sugar, water and yeast. You're making an unflavored vodka base before distillation. Perhaps 16% alcohol instead of 40.

I can't believe you never made cool aid wine. Used to make that in my closet when I was 14 until a balloon blew off and my mom smelled it.

I was discussing wine at Christmas and someone asked how to make wine.
I just blurted out. 1 cup. 1 Quart. 1/4 teaspoon.
It’s a habit. Thanks Paw Paw. Been making wine for years now since I watched your first wine making videos. Most of my family is from the Appalachian mountains. It feels good to be closer to self sufficient like they are. Cheers.

I just stumbled across your videos today and Paw Paw you are an amazing person! Your cheerful attitude and positive demeanor are infectious. Anyways i just got into "home brew" about 3 weeks ago and made my first 5 1gallon batches of mead with different flavors, just waiting for them to get done so i can age them for the holidays.
Surprisingly before finding your videos, i made some of this, what i am calling, sugar wine. I had 1 extra pack of wine yeast from the mead so i took the 2 left over half gallon jugs of what used to be honey, then mixed an unknown amount (alot) of sugar and some fruit that was over ripe. one of the half gallons has about 4 over ripe, almost mushy bananas, and the other one has some white grapes that were well past their prime. So far it smells great, i hope it turns out well, well see in 3-6 weeks.
I wanted to pass along what i found this sugar wine is called. I found that there is a Finnish drink called Kilju (pronounced kill-you, go figure) which is just this. Sugar, water, yeast. Some people also call it college wine or one guy i saw call it "drunk juice" haha. If my hydrometer readings are correct, i put enough sugar to get 18-20% abv if im lucky. I dont think im going to drink my sugar wine straight, i might try and barrel age it in small oak barrels. Oh, also im trying to find out how to make my own oak barrels in the workshop... my wife loves my hobbies (sarcasm)
You keep being the best damn Paw Paw you can be! Stay happy and healthy, have a good one!

Hey Paw Paw this here is GrumPaw. Just revisiting this vid because I could not remember if you added the kool aid when making the wine or after. My Apple pie wine was a hit. I served it last Christmas like a root beer float. I am going to start early this year (for me anyway) and brew up some different ones. I am even going to try a Cherry pie wine using half white sugar and half brown sugar. If you ever decide to try brown sugar just be sure that you pack the brown sugar. I guess by volume it isnt the same. Anyway it has been awhile since I checked in. Hope you are having a "Great day and a better tomorrow!" ❤

Hey Paw Paw; that gives me an idea to use some of the unusual flavors that I usually use for breath mints, ice cream and baking. There's a website (NaturesFlavors) that carries a huge amount of unusual flavors, natural and organic, in several different forms (extracts, concentrates, essential oils, powders, etc.). So far I have Violet, Chocolate Mint, Caramel, Peppermint, Rum Raisin, and Quinine but after seeing your "peculiar wine" I'm going to get some exotic fruit ones, plus maybe the Boston Cream Pie, Cafe Latte, etc. This is so much fun; thank you for all your videos!

I've been making my own homemade hooch for years - * if you want to boost the alcohol content, just freeze it overnight . . . pour the contents into a fresh bottle; double the %'age ! . . . Next step is to distill :)

    • @DoingItCheap
      @DoingItCheap  7 років тому

George, a lot of folks talk about freeze distilling. My point is, I like the taste of it just the way it is. Most folks that drink a higher proof mix it anyway. Too much work for me. If I want liquor, I buy it. One glass of this and it is nap time. 16 to 20% alcohol as is according to my viewers that have measured it with a hydrometer when they made it.

hahahah , love the lemon tree, i grew one myself, indoors, had family and friends over to dinner for thanksgiving, one of the kids, a pretty little girl, picked all the lemons off the tree. I was horrified! It took me years to get fruit. Oh well, i love your videos!! Thanks pawpaw

Paw Paw your videos are highly informative and super helpful when trying to refine this method..I have always "grown" my own because I like to know what I am putting into my body...now I can add this to my bag of tricks

Ew, I gotta try this!!! Sounds so good! And, hay. I smell like a wine-o all the time. Keeps people away. Anti-peaple spray. Ha-Ha! Whoop my ass, too! So I did the other wine more carefully and put a full 2 cups, well one and 7/8 cup sugar and made sure only one half teaspoon yeast and then wait it out, real good! And, YUP. It sure tastes good. Hum-Dinger. I loves it! Ha-Ha! Santa comes to my house everyday. Hee-Hee.

should i use bottled water or would tap water be ok. my water is treated and not well water. PS i got apple and grape bubbling away right now (4 days)

Rick, that is entirely up to you. I doubt if your "city" water has enough chemicals in it to affect the wine in any way, unless you find your tap water to taste offensive. Purely up to you.

You can also do what we used to do as a kid when we needed water for the aquarium. Just let it sit for 24 hours, seems the chlorine dissipates overnight.
