In the months following Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy conducted operations at sea, threatening British Royal Navy dominance in the area.
The most dangerous moment of the war, and the one which caused me the greatest alarm, was when the Japanese fleet was heading for Ceylon and the naval base there. The capture of Ceylon, the consequent control of the Indian Ocean, and the possibility at the same time of a German conquest of Egypt would have closed the ring and the future would have been black.

March 31, 1942, Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, her forces had overrun Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and Burma. Now the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army were heating up for an assault on India, the jewel in the British imperial crown.

Interesting detail, the troopship we see at 25:49 and which Wolfpack sinks at 31:58 is actually the one of a kind amphibious assault ship Shinshū Maru. One of the first large dedicated amphibious warfare ships in the world. It had a well deck to launch boats like the Daihatsu class landing craft we can see on her deck. Very nice to see it represented in the game!
I did not expect they have modeled the 大発動艇 (landing craft). Nice detail.

My only real experience with dodging enemy air attacks comes from _Battlestations: Pacific_ (so maybe I'm not completely on point here) but your "zig zag" maneuver during the Val attack only made you more vulnerable. If you had continued the left turn, you would have started moving parallel and towards the diving bombers, giving them a much more difficult shot. Instead, you reversed the turn and presented your broadside.
Yeah, zig-zagging is something you do against subs, not aircraft.
The AA is so frustratingly inconsistent in this game. Sometimes it rips to shreds any plane for miles around, and sometimes a full flight of planes can go passed a wall of AA without any harm.

thats how WW2 aa worked, you literally threw up as much bullets as possible and hoped you'd hit something
I’m sure staying in tight formation would help number of birds downed, don’t know if the number of swimming seamen will be helped though.
@@spiritdon2206 Japanese did, the US and British had a *somewhat* more sophisticated method of actually aiming at the targets instead of just volley firing into their general direction a la musket line.
But then again, this is 1942, and the US had just started to bolt on as many AA guns and AA directors as possible onto their ships, courtesy of one Admiral Willis "Ching" Lee, so the British and Japanese AA aren't too different. Some Japanese ships might still even have some 40mm Pom Poms on them!

That light cruiser at the end is the luckiest ship ever, eating 9 torpedos, 2 of which were duds, and then recovering afterwards.

LOL. Can you imagine if the Swordfish heading for Taranto had to RTB when the sun went down or didn't take off at all. No Taranto and, if the IJN hadn't studied that attack, maybe no Pearl Harbour or a delayed Pearl Harbour and US entry into WWII.

Do not want to be zig-zagging a ship under aerial attack. Full speed, full turn of the wheel and go in a circle. If you zig zag against plane you're likely to end up presenting an easy target as you kill your momentum, speed and when you shift to the other side on the rudder you'll at some point in the turn, be pointing straight ahead for a while. Which is of course the most likely time a plane will come in on an attack run.
i love the anti air in this game. your whole fleet stuggles with the bettys and the vals meanwhile that one old samurai with his yumi bow snipes a hurricane out of the sky xD. gg wp
Royal Navy Carrier design came in clutch at the end, the armoured flight deck shrugged off most of the Val bombs and the enclosed hanger space should have helped with fighting the fires.
It’s the best looking model for an aircraft carrier in game at least it just looks so clean

My guy you need to use the aircraft waypoint system to set up proper search sectors around your fleet. You're fighting a much stronger enemy force and you're doomed if your carriers keep getting ambushed like this.
CAP is your first line of defence, not the last: vector them onto contacts as soon as they're detected and before they're directly overhead, for which you need a thorough search cordon.
The one down side of the British armoured carrier was smaller airgroups. That armour isn't free, HMS Indomitable carried about 50 aircraft and displaced almost as much as a Yorktown class, that could carry 90.
Wolfpack, I think that the surface raider that you sunk was the one that sunk the HMAS Sydney IRL, so you just saved Australia's most popular ship from a terrible fate. Why do I think that was the surface raider? Because it was flying a a dutch flag which was the case with the surface raider that sunk the HMAS Sydney

Once, in my abdacom playthrough, i sent torpedo bombers after what i thought was an AMC. It was a fishing junk. I was like “welp, im already here…” and proceeded to ram 3 fish into it lol

I have a suggestion:
To fix the issue of Hermes and indomitable needing repairs and you have like 23 command points you could get an escort carrier to temporarily take indomitable place. Or a BB.
Yeah, one problem with that, Escort carriers were built to escort merchant convoys, using merchant hulls. Their top speed is under 20 knots. Attaching one to a cruiser squadron is going to leave it limping along at 16-18 knots at best, probably less as the carrier probably can't spend the entire voyage at its maximum speed.

Not sure if it would be available in this mod but the best light cruiser that the UK had in the Pacific was hms Belfast, a 12 gun cruiser (4x3 setup). Would be a good addition to one of the fleets if it is available.
HMS Belfast only went to the pacific in 1945. At the time this campaign is set she was laid up in Rosyth dockyard for major repairs after hitting a mine and breaking her keel.
Thank goodness indomitable lives up to her name. I think her fleet needs a lil reinforcing to increase the volume of AA fire, maybe another cruiser and destroyer would help at the very least. Ideally I’d add another carrier like indomitable to the force, but that’s prolly too much to afford right now as it is
For a stationary target and albacores, why not just aim the nose as the target, manual release and turn away much earlier than the auto attack feature? Keeps them out of guns range for longer, the torpedos have the legs...

Big fan of this series and all of the previous iterations. Narrations really make this great.
I'm glad the aerial combat is not the best in this game... The Betties were equipped with a 20mm autocannon in the tail turret. If it were the case in the game, poor hurricanes flying in a straight line would be cut to pieces before getting in effective range of their 7,7mm plinkers.
And those Hurricanes have not zeroed their guns, the tracers go all over the place Not a single stream converges with another. It even seems like some of the guns are pointing slightly up or down.
My headcanon states that these are all reject pilots who failed gunnery, so their mechanics give them maximum spread so they'll at least hit *something*.

This is obviously your best series. A really good game, w/really good commendary is hard to beat!! Good job bro.
It’s quite risky, but strafing runs will absolutely finish off a crippled merchant or destroyer if it just needs that little extra bit of persuasion. Also the slower your aircraft are moving, the more damage the strafing runs will do. I have actually sunk transports with nothing but strafing when I had 20 fighters that I didn’t care about getting shot down, hehe.
I think you need to manage your damage control parties more. When the carrier was hit, you had two groups working on damage that had no fires and no flooding, while two fires were left unattended, one of them close to the hangar.
The non burning compartments will not take more damage the fire however will spread. You should have focused on firefighting first, and take care of the rest afterwards to minimize damage.
Also wait longer before leaving the engagement area, many of the ships sink on their own, but their damage is somewhat repaired after leaving, also their movement speed on the campaign map is not reduced by damage
Also, the Fulmar is goddamn useless as a dogfighter, I use them purely for patrolling and dragging flak. Husband your Sea Hurricanes and save them for fleet defence, since fighters can be launched without incurring a cooldown, and scramble them all when an incoming strike is detected.
I'd get that CV repaired. You still haven't found the IJN carrier that attacked yours. Another attack like that one, and you lose half your carrier force. I know Wolf doesn't like subs, but it may be time to invest in 1 or 2 and go CV hunting.
Im surprised the AI toughens up the enemy ships. According to Drachinafel, the Japanese navy wasn't well known for its prowess in damage control.
I get the in-game reasoning, but I think it's kind of funny you'd set up an torpedo run on a ship and consider it hostile if it opens fire on you
If only your ships were as resilient as that light cruiser lol.

To be fair, IRL, Japanese damage control apparently varied GREATLY from ship to ship, with some ships sinking after seemingly-minor damage, but conversely, some ships pulling off... well, what that light cruiser did for a while there 😕

The rapid switching between camera angles and screens make it really hard to follow the action.
The odd-looking 'troop transport' is actually a landing craft depot ship named Shinshu Maru. She had an eventful life, sinking TWICE. Her first sinking was during the Battle of the Sunda Strait on 27 February 1942, when she was inadvertently hit by torpedoes fired from Mogami. She sank in shallow water, forcing the Commander of 16th Army (LTG Imamura Hitoshi) to take a swim. She was refloated in September 1942 and was under repair until November 1943. Her second sinking was after being torpedoed by submarine USS Aspro (SS-309) and then finished off by aircraft from Task Force 38.

Yeah, British Fleet carriers are really tough cookies, but being bombed is never pretty so it was definitely more damage than I suspected. Still, HMS Indomitable resisted those 250 & 60 kg bombs very well.
if you hit ships from both sides, you can cause counter flooding. always attack one side

Great show! I actually froz with a forkful of food halfway to my mouth when your carrier was under attack.
Would it be better to have the escort ships sail TOWARDS incoming aircraft while the carrier sails away? My main thinking is one, getting to the aircraft before they get to the carrier, but also if ships can fire anti-air for I dunno, say two miles radius, then if they're close to the carriers (within that 2-mile radius) then the enemy aircraft don't have to fly through as much AA to reach the carrier. So I think it'd be better to make the aircraft fly through the entire AA defense instead of only opening fire once they're already within a couple miles of the carrier. Start shooting at them from further out.
Loving these videos, they're great. When I switch from Mac to a regular laptop this Summer, I'll be buying this game.
The only think I find slightly frustrating is that the AI doesn't take evasive action when torpedoes are dropped. Even small fast destroyers keep sailing in a straight line and get hit! Feels a bit unrealistic.
I'm surprised you didn't let the crew finish the repairs on Indomitable before leaving combat. I was under the impression that the module health wouldn't go up unless it was repaired before leaving combat?
This guy some how makes this game look entertaining and engaging... which is an achievement in a good way honestly.

To be fair, loosing your only active carrier in theater is a fairly MAJOR setback. Basically going to be on the back foot until one of those carriers comes back into service.

There were actually quite a few German freighter and auxiliary cruisers in Japanese waters wich got sold to the IJN since they really couldn't get home anymore since the war broke out

I do love this mod and this game. But it always breaks my immersion when the AI ships don’t even try to turn to dodge torpedos/ bombs.
Didn’t the prince of wales dodge something like 15 bombs before she sunk with Repulse? I wish they could code it so ships would zigzag or try and form up in a tighter formation during air attack
Not gonna lie. I am playing this on the hardest difficulty. I had to start 4 times over to understand that logistics is needed badly. And you really need to consolidatie in the beginning.

It’s better to lose Indomitable for 30 days than permanently, I say… but honestly, I know how much you love surface combat and feel the subs are OP, but you should still have a couple scouting out behind the enemy’s lines, especially if you end up perma-losing a carrier… even if you cap yourself to only use them when they are attacked by ASW.
The amount of carriers they have is astonishing
this is before the Battle of Midway so they have 6 fleet carriers, 2 of which were sunk during this campaign

Why don't you have your screening vessels and aircraft carrier all lay smoke as aircraft are getting close to start their attack? Laying smoke and having entire task force change course would make bombing more difficult for the enemy. Same when torpedo aircraft attack.
never under estimate a british aircraft carrier especially with their armoured flight deck, the can literally take a kamikaze direct to flight deck and be launching again within 10 to 20 minutes shit some even take part in ship vs ship engagement and even coastal bombardment

Yep, he been saying that even on his previous series on War on the Sea. The sub are just too op if controlled by human in this game.
@@robertfernandez9135 yeah you can pretty much just fire 1 or 2 salvos and leave combat even if the whole enemy fleet is going for you
not sure if its in game but the top experienced early war japanese Betty Crews could drop a 800kg Bomb, compared to the 250kg of a Val or * normal* Betty payload. They could penetrate even BB Decks while the 250kg bombs could not, even the Decks of the British CV (however could the deck of US CV).
Would love to buy the game if they simplified the MOD install process and cleaned it up some. Love the series..
