If War Thunder's F-100D was historically accurate

- Originally built as a private venture by North American Aviation, the F-100 Super Sabre was a vastly redesigned and improved take on the F-86 Sabre. The F-100 was largely received well thanks to its high performance and ease of use, but operational service left stains on its reputation. The F-100 had an alarmingly high accident rate and saw multiple redesigns. Weaknesses with the wings, vertical stabilizer, and engine killed multiple pilots. Though it was originally designed as an air superiority fighter, it was quickly pressed into the fighter-bomber role. The F-100 would never get to prove its mettle against enemy aircraft, only confirmed to have shot down a single bogey during the Vietnam War, where it was relegated primarily to close air support and suppression of enemy air defense duties.

Something interesting about the F-100 is that my grandfather had to climb into the intake while the engine was running to do repairs. He had a rope tied around his leg to make sure he wasn’t sucked in.
That is certainly interesting...
F-100 confirmed as an unstopable SUCC machine
My grandfather had to do the same, but with a mig 19, and the engine was turned off
Was there a particular reason why the engine had to be on during the repairs? Would love to know :)
@@An0beseGiraffe he probably was checking the blades with the engine running at low rpm so it would turn
"total wing failure" Those are not a combination of words I want to see regarding an airplane.
What wing?
@@Rafael_Fuchs if there were any wings they sure as hell aren’t here now
Not like partial wing faliures are much better when flying mach.
Ah yes, a hole in your right wing
sounds like North Vietnamese SAMs were the least oft the pilot's problems
Gotta love "nuclear munition" and "relative accuracy" in one sentence
Don't forget the wonderful phrase "bomb toss".
Low yield against hardened bunkers? Direct hit will be needed, so yeah, even with nukes you need accuracy, as funny it might sound (the reason why ICBM's have dropped in yield is due to improvements in accuracy).
@@EasoLV lower fallout also means less cleanup
@@thebravegallade731 Usally lower yield equals more fallout.
@@Jonathan-fb1kj eh?
The low speed instability was so common that the ground crews gave it a nickname, the sabre dance
and it was only with the first version of the F-100
F-100D had it fixed, and pilots got trained how to avoid it, because the dance only happens when the plane gets into a stall at low speed
It was only with the a version, the d version had wing fences to prevent the sabre dance
If that was implemented it would only happen in sim, air RB planes have fly by wire
You forgot "all modules currently ingame should come stock, since in real life they dont send jets off to battle with grimy cannons, no G-suit, and no missiles"
And also, a pilot would have at least 50 crew levels but that’s something that should come with realism
@@fangsout305 that's a good point
"It allowed bomb toss of nuclear munitions with relative accuracy" O_o
.....and half-way decent chances of escape.....
Nukes, the only weapons where accuracy is a minor concern.....after all a near miss will kill you just as dead as a direct hit.
"Relative" works with physics and nuclear weapons. ^^
@@LupusAries Depends. Tanks can be surprisingly resistant to nuclear attack, and also offer decent radiation shielding to the crew. During testing, a British Centurion tank was placed 500 meters from a 9-kiloton tactical nuke in 1953. The blast threw the tank 5 feet and the sheer force would have killed the crew if they were present, but the tank itself was perfectly fine. It was actually placed back into service after being decontaminated. An entrenched tank of more modern design and greater mass would be even more resilient and offer greater protection to the crew.
That was the main purpose of the LABS system
@@Morrigi192 If sheer force of the blast or the concussion would have killed or liquified the crew of that previous tank there isn't much more that a modern design would be able to do in comparison, for all the wonders of improving tech there isn't much we can do to improve the human crew (yet).

Yeah we don't wanna give gaijin any ideas...
My grandpa was an f100 pilot at RAF Lakenheath and in 1964 he put his plane into an unrecoverable flat spin. He ejected but because he was in a spin he went through the canopy and injured his legs. He recovered and went on to qualify top gun for the f-4 and fly CAP in Vietnam. Cool that you made this video.
"To prevent entering unrecoverable spins at high angle of attack, high use of the rudder was needed for steering" should have been in there too. Great video otherwise, lad!
Aw hell yeah! I love the 'if they were historically accurate' videos especially the plane ones.
I am a big fan now that I’ve gon through the different war thunder UA-camrs
Edit: nice video
Shit when I heard that radar warning noise I could almost hear Jester screaming "Missle Missle Missle!"
Thank you Spookston for making those vids for Planes!
Was looking forward to it, theres alot of interesting planes in WT
cool to see you getting into aircraft
If Strv 103 was historically accurate pls btw love this series
Would love to see more planes in these vids, nice work!
I talked to an old vet who worked on just about every aircraft we flew from Korea to Vietnam. He said he never had engine problems with the Super Sabers
My parents never had a car-accident, so car-accidents don't happen?
That was really informative and good, thank you Spookston.
I like how you shed a light on aircrafts now too. Maybe we can get a historically accurate F-104 one day? In Germany, we named them Widowmaker, "Witwenmacher", because the plane had a surprisingly high crash rate. Most of it was wrong use by the West German army and bad trained pilots in the beginning of the program.
I’m so glad you did this Spook. I love the F100
Keep it going! This is a great video, one day Gaijin and a big part of War Thunder will watch your videos.
You should really make more of these plane videos they are awesome
So heres a fun fact! When Gaijin first introduced the F-100A for China in the dev server it would have its outer wing stall issue resulting in the infamous "sabre dance" when landing, I thought it was really cool but it was removed in the live server.
My grandfather served as an AP during this planes heyday. He had an incident where the engine on one stalled out mid takeoff, the plane was already 10 feet off the deck and he was at the end of the runway watching this thing coming at him. He needed a change of shorts after it bellied out, bounced, and then crashed behind him
Only a SLIGHT chance to completely disintigrate
The nasty ground loop on take off (and landing? can’t remember) was called the “Saber Dance”.
If (HUGE if) I’m remembering correctly it was caused by the CG being too far back when the Hun was heavily loaded and/or at max fuel. The Dance started when the nose would pitch up to a higher AoA than the pilot wanted or thought he would achieve. He’d then try and correct even though the speed was too low to give him decent elevator authority. All the while the plane was fighting to pitch up. There were multiple fatal crashes before they realized the pilot’s natural instinct to go to full afterburner only made it worse. The fight between pilot and plane set off a really nasty oscillation that lead to a stall while only a few dozen feet above the runway. There are several really scary videos of it here on UA-cam where the F-100 basically tries to balance on the thrust before tipping over and exploding.
I just got back into halo and played combat evolved for the first time and now I can only think of if vehicles were historically accurate
I'd like to see more Aircraft videos from this series!
You mentioned it later on, but the low speed handling and sudden pitching on takeoff was rectified by the time the D came into service. It was mostly do do with the wing shape, and only the A and B really suffered from it.
And here I am still grinding for the P-51D
0:09 In F-100A, yes. But F-100C, and D relatively didn't bothered by this issue since they had extended wing with flaps added(F-100A had flaperon on F-100C/D's flap position, F-100C/D's flaperon pulled out to the further side of its main wing.
At last, I can rest in peace knowing that my suggestion has become a video...
As far as I'm aware, as Matra Magics were developed to be side winder rail compatible. The French F-100D should be capable of spawning with Magic 1's (Developed in 1975) with the last French unit using F-100D/F's until 1978.
Actually finding a source of Magic 1's mounted on an F-100 however is going to be damn difficult.
The French F-100D in game is stuck with fucking Aim-9B's or Mighty mouse rockets as it's only payload options.
The F100S would have never mounted the r550s. It was being replaced and phased out of service in the 70s because it was being replaced by the jaguar. The last f100s were scrapped in 77
@@jbeverley67 What I'm really saying is that I don't see it impossible that they looked at mounting Magic 1's on the last serving F-100D's. As it is in game the French F-100D is the worst one in game simply due to it's lack of payload options, lacking even bombs, it's stuck with only AIM-9Bs as is any other French jet but the Jaguar A and Mirage 3.
Gaijin has made less realistic equipment options a thing in the past and a lot of French aircraft are facing jets with Aim-9J's, G's etc. while being stuck with Aim-9 "Roll and they miss" B's.
I would really love to see Spookston do a "If War Thunder's Leclerc was historically accurate"
Leclerc next please with things like ' resist it's own most powerful ammo from the front at any range after test by the army"
I like to guess when the video will end based on the song, i don't know why but it's such a fun lil game
Pretty sure the F-100D got wing fences to help prevent Sabre Dance.
imagine seeing so many complaints to make the Tiger BR go down for historical accuracy, you had to make a whole series of videos explaining if they had been historical accurate
nice job tricking me into learning real stuff by dressing it up as a videogame video
Some corrections:
0:05 the bad low speed handling was only with F-100A and C
the D model had that fixed
0:15 only later D models that got upgraded as part of "Operation High Wire"
0:25 None of the manuals confirm this, they even go against it by saying the max possible limit on the strongest station is 1500lbs
also none of the pylons from the F-100 use a 30" hook spacing required for the M118
1:05 yes, again only late F-100D models
Could you do if warthunder’s OS2u king fisher was historically accurate
I dont even play this game anymore i just watch your videos
please keep on doing more of this video wt aircraft series, its so fkin awesome! and please think off adding a helicopter series too, good work furry m8!
I think we should add that performing a deadstick landing in the F-100 has a possibility of you running into a hangar wall
F-100A (like the one in chinese tt or french one) do indeed suffer from pitch increases, but not the F-100D, as it has been modified with leading-edge slats on its wings in order to help it with its unsafe charactaristic.
Please do more historically accurate for planes
Moving on to planes I see
If f100 was historically accurate:

More vídeos of aircraft cuz its very Nice
From a dedicated WT pilot: Nice vid 👍🏻
You should do more planes!
Gotta say, with the easy wing structural failures you can already experience with the F-100D in-game, it's feeling pretty historically accurate! As for directional stability, I'm sure Gaijin would love to give F-100As the Corsair treatment and make the rudder worthless...
also bad combustion chamber alignment is just not having researched any of the engine upgrades
I’m glad he’s doing aircraft’s aswell as tanks makes the content better than it already is
1:13 i like how the face is just like :0
Yes do more planes! As they not being historically accurate is much more important....
“Historical accuracy? What’s that?” - *Gaijin*
This occurred on a lot of planes that were built, There are always a lot of problems on complicated fighter planes sometimes problems are never resolved in the Air Force and navy just learn to deal with them. that's why the F35 being perceived as a "failure" simply because it's under a media microscope is ridiculous.
The F-100s had an insane amount of problems and technical issues. It was also dangerous to fly due to the aforementioned instability at low speeds.
can we have if the spitfire series was historically accurate
Good video overall, but why was a stability issue from the smaller vert stab on the F-100A included in a video about the F-100D?
Well, ehm. The Chinese F-100As are F-100As updated to F-100D standards, except for the wings.
That's about as close as I could get, but I'm guessing Spookston is trying to prevent comments with obvious mistakes of other variants.
I love the music!
The instability issues at low speeds were corrected in the D model by adding the structures on the wings, due to the amount of deaths by the so called “saber dance” in the previous iterations of the F100
Sounds kinda hard to solve considering that the Sabre dance is more or less a consequence of the outer wing stalling before the inner wing due to the nature of highly swept wings.
@@martijn9568 The so called "Saber Dance" was caused by airflow from the wing sweep like you said . They resolved this by increasing the wingspan and adding the fins(not sure of the technical term) on the wings, as well as changing the rudder slightly. The problem still existed, however the speed margins improved drastically.
It's strange that it didn't has transimission problems
Video idea: all you need is a L3/33
F100D in this game gave me the best jet experience i ever had. I only want my jet to be strong in at least one thing to keep my alive and being the fastest bird did just that. That was before though. Before the Dark Times, Before the BR changes.

Surprised not to see anything regarding the French having the F-100D or its payload options. Would think that a French F-100D would have some native weapon systems mounted to it or at least the same weaponry as the American one.
O i love the vacuum on the f100s nose

Please, Don't make Gaijin increase silver lion costs. I'm just short of declaring bankruptcy as it is

0:13 R.I.P. Mr. Pilot
Mig-21s next pls
The F100 can be sent into an uncontrollable spin while flying at low speeds with full fuel. Kind of like oh i dunno any plane ever.
And don't forget. It never even shot down a single plane during its service, giving it higher SL and RP gain :)
You know I’ve always wondered what Napalm would to do a tank I doubt it would kill the crew right off the bat but it would be able to destroy the engine and eventually cook the people inside maybe. Anyone have any ideas
if the f-100d had half of the features proposed here, maybe it wouldn't suck as much in-game compared to other contemporaries
