If War Thunder's F3D was historically accurate

- Conceptualized in 1945, the F3D Skyknight was designed as an advanced night fighter that would make full use of the advancements made in aircraft radar technology. Though the F3D's performance was lackluster and it had some reliability issues, it would be gradually improved over time, and proved its effectiveness in combat during the Korean War. Eventually the F3D was used to test the installation of Sparrow radar guided missiles.

The harrier GR.1 had a windshield wiper animation during the dev build but wasn’t implemented into the release version

@@fraychiken honestly I don't understand people's argument against the F-4F getting Aim-9Js. Yes obviously west germany never had them in inventory, but the rails are the same (an Aim-9 is an Aim-9 is an Aim-9 all the way down the line until you reach the X which finally changed the basic form factor)and they exist at the same point in time. It just balances things better for amongst all the F-4s. Unless you really want them to give it the historically accurate Aim-9Ls, there is no reason for it not to have Js. It's already a leg down without Sparrows and while yes the UK Phantoms have been shafted with their Fox2 options, they have the best radars in the game currently after the last patch which makes up for it at least to some extent.

@@hunterjones225 but that's not the case, tho. While the F-4F was able to carry AIM-9Js, not every vehicle is compatible with them. In fact, modern AIM-9 platforms have enhanced capabilities that need some onboard computers to be used.

The F3D used to have a lead calculating sight with radar locks. Not sure why it was removed.
It was a wee bit overpowered cause 262s where already bad, and the guns on the F3D are easy enough to aim hence they removed the tracker
262 Bad? It's only bad ir you get the jump on one, the other way around You need distance to beat one in speed

The f3d-2 would’ve been a fun aircraft to fly with all of its improvements. Such a shame it wasn’t added, unlike the lesser d-1.

As good as these aircraft-centric videos are, they have a distinct lack of metallic thunks.

If I remember correctly, the F3D-1 had the lead radar for a short while but then they removed it for no reason.
Shame, it was very useful in sim battles

Yoo gajin, add radar guided missiles, they would be somewhat balanced due to the fact of radar takes a long time to lock and the fact it could be innacurate and flared, and definetly maneuverable

(Very) casual War Thunder player here. Two things I would love to see in WT - 1) A "Prototype" tag for certain aircraft, aircraft with this tag can only spawn in one per match. 2) Server settings that would allow the host to specify malfunctions ON/OFF, Freak Weather ON/OFF, Bird Strikes ON/OFF, etc, just like in DCS. I reckon it would be great to fly in to battle only find that your WEP doesn't work or your right engine starts with an oil leak, but that's probably just me.
While you probably wouldn't want random chance influencing modes with SL/RP rewards, it would be pretty nice to have more options for custom battles.
Gaijin: We're DUMB and can't do our homework PROPERLY but who cares since we're in Russia and nobody can do anything about it?

Might have been a little misleading to simply say that the F3D could carry Sparrows. The Sparrow I was a Beam Rider and not a SARH like the versions we use in game. Basically you’d have to keep the target in the center of your gunsight till impact. And even then the range was extremely short because of how quickly the guidance beam became too weak to register. So it might be effective on the same level as a Duck against non-maneuvering bombers.
To make things worse, the Sparrow-armed versions lost their cannons. I think I'd rather have four 20mm cannons than four Sparrow Is.
memes aside, things like engines used being dependant if you are up or down tier is a very neat idea
So many rare/prototype vehicles in War Thunder. Makes me sad to think the Ru 251 they only made 2 or maybe a few more.

In-game it is obvious the F3D-1 was never meant for 2000lb bombs because taking off with them originally made you use the entirety of a Modern Runway and if it was a ww2 runway you just had to hope it was positioned on a large hill so you could just drop off of it instead of ramping up another hill.

The F3D-1 was a junker only used for training. The F3D-2 actually was deployed for combat. Naturally Gaijoob only put in the junker for the US.

NGL, nobody would use the sparrow on the F3D, its max lock range is about 4km with the radar, and the sparrows minimum effective range (at least in 10.7 the only BR i play it in) seems to be 4.5km

Correct. Also, the F3D-2M (and I presume also the F3D-1M) removed the cannons along with adding AIM-7A capability. So you'd have to choose either guns or missiles before going into battle. Given that they're just beam-riding missiles, I'm pretty sure I'd opt for the cannons.

The swept-wing version (the F3D-3) never got past the blueprint stage.
Gaijin is too focused on getting to the MiG-29, F-16, etc. to add the F3D-2 or add anymore stores to the F3D-1. Or the rear radar. I'm finding the immediate post-war jets to be interesting.
Uninstalled last night due to toxic event. Might pick it up again in a couple years to see where it goes. Not optimistic

For internal equipment it is currently missing:
AIDA radar (it's a tracking AND search radar, the black nose on the Etendard isn't for show, the fin is also the radio guidence antenna for AS.20's and 30's, the AS.30L is laser guided)
SAAB bombing computer (paired with TacNav to provide rocketry and bombing guidence)
TACAN Uplink (no MFD in cockpit, lmao)
Radar guided Gyro Sight (The La-200 has it, why doesn't the Etendard which ALSO had it?)
Also the IVP production/modification (IV M's can be swapped between Recon and armed easily) should be an equipment option for Ground RB and Sim providing spotting mechanics if aircraft spotting ever got added.
